I hate giving negative reviews. We have been coming here for years, numerous times a week. I like spicy tuna rolls without spicy mayonnaise and asked them to put Sriracha on instead and was told they wouldn't do it. I said why and was told the owner doesn't want to change the way they serve it. I asked if they would not put cucumber in and they said yes, but THAT is not how they serve it yet they were willing to change that recipe but the Sriracha was too much of an ask. I said there are many sushi restaurants in Montclair and said I should go to them. The ego of this owner is not the way to treat customers and their asks. He assumes that his spicy mayonnaise is different than other sushi restaurants? Nope, THEY ALL make it with spicy mayonnaise so why be so protective of his supposedly secret spicy tuna recipe. They were rude to me and disrespectful. I won't go there again even though it's located around the corner. The owner is quite rude. read more

The positives: The sushi rolls with black rice is pretty good. The restaurant also gives a complimentary appetizer (some kind of spring roll) which was tasty. I also enjoyed the shrimp tempura as well. Place is BYOB and there was a liquor store right next door. Perfectly convenient. Though I liked the sushi, I really didn't care for the chicken teriyaki. It was not prepared like the bento boxes in standard Japanese restaurants. It looks and taste like a Chinese dish with onions and peppers. I was going to give this restaurant 4 stars but had to lower to 3 due to the lack of freshness of the dessert. They only serve ice cream 3 different ways for dessert (scoop of ice cream, fried ice cream or Mochi ice cream). We ordered a scoop of green tea and vanilla ice cream as well as mango Mochi. They all had freezer burn. I love dessert and Mochi ice cream, but the dough part was so hard and old that it ruined my joy. Guess diners here rarely order dessert? I ate dinner here tonight. Small resturant with very nice owners. The meal was quite good and the establishment is BYOB with a liquor store just next door. My only complaint is the service was quite slow but we didn't mind as we were among friends. I ordered two special rolls #50 and #51 Spider Rolls and Hot Green Rolls. Both rolls were quite tasty and I highly recommend the Hot Green Roll as my friend also agreed. read more

Excellent service and great sushi! Small place in a strip of other food joints, but easily this one of the leader of the pack. Decently sized menu of sushi and other specials, and usually comes with free soup before your sushi gets there. Reasonably priced and the workers are always walking around with a smile on their face which you don't usually find at other sushi joints. read more

By far the best Sushi we've had so far in Montclair. It's a unique and traditional setting. Very clean, quiet and the the music in the background sets the mood for mind sitting and great food tasting. This is the best sushi place in the Montclair area...as close to 'Japanese' food you can get Much better than Dai Kichi Montclair (Dai kichi is good but they use A LOT of salt and other seasoning to favor their rice and food-always swollen after eating here) and miles above Nori (ok, I understand the owners and wait staff are Chinese but their food borders on being more Chinese than actually Japanese...at least at Dai kichi, even though they are Chinese, they stick to making close to the touristy Japanese food)...Dai kichi is ok, and nori is way too Chinese touristy Japanese food It's very difficult to find a good Japanese restaurant...last one on the jersey side closed a few years ago when Matsushima's owner passed away...near what use to be yaohan's, now mitsuwa In Edgewater ...but...when I invited friends to experience true Japanese cuisine and sushi at Matsushima's, they couldn't handle it nor did they enjoy it...although they say they were true Japanese food lovers To be honest, bc the owner was a patient, whenever we went, we never ordered off the menu...we got the true Japanese experience...dishes kept coming til we tell them 'no more!' but they do have their course, each small meal 'appetizer sized portioned just right, teasing us with favors I've never experienced anywhere, each dish its own kingdom, and he served us whatever was fresh that evening and also items that were not on the menu... I wish I could give this place 10 stars. I discovered it about 4 years ago after typing "cute sushi Montclair" in Google and am forever grateful. Quaint little restaurant, BYOB, cozy, delicious food and excellent service. I believe the place now has new owners, however they had honored the previous menu when I went (some special rolls the previous owners had as specials). They also gave us appetizers on the house. So many times you visit a restaurant and they charge you $1 dollar for sauces, etc. but I truly appreciate it when they send something on the house and value you for being a repeat customer. We'll travel 40 minutes to come here for a date or for my future mom's birthday dinner or to celebrate Mother's Day as this is now her favorite place too :) Absolutely love this place and highly recommend! read more

i'm a teenager and my whole family is friendly with the owners and workers there from the cooks, to the waiter. we would come pretty frequently so they got to know us and our orders. they are so so friendly and put a lot into caring for their customers. it's a very clean place as well. not only that, but everything they make is very nicely put together and so delicious! this is BY FAR the best restaurant in montclair. super fast orders too. i just really love this place and i would recommend it to anyone that like sushi. i've never gotten bored of this place i could eat it every single day. if i had to chose one restaurant to eats food off of for the rest of my life it would be sushi koshi. some orders i would recommend are the avocado cucumber mango roll and also the teriyaki salmon! i would give it 10 stars if i could. read more

Went there today with a friend and had the best time! Everyone there was very nice and polite. The food was not only delicious but the portions were absolutely perfect! It was very much worth the price we had paid. In the end they gave us a free desert which was lovely. It wasn't too sweet and it was perfect for us. I am a sushi lover who has had ALL kinds of sushi, from VERY expensive sushi to very cheap sushi. I like to think with that said I have a really diverse palette for how sushi should taste regardless of the price. Owners seemed so sweet but I won't be back. I ordered very basic rolls (a california, shrimp and salmon) and there was barely anything in them, like the crab meat in the California was beyond lacking and the salmon was by far the worst I've seen, it looked super fatty and honestly just disgusting. I have lived in Montclair for 2 years and have been looking for a sushi place that could compare to my favorite place from back home before I moved here. I finally found it at sushi Koshi! The sushi is always so fresh and their yakisoba noodles are my favorite the staff is also so friendly. They even gave me a couple of things on the house to try :-) it was such a nice experience in the Watchung area of Montclair. Not too much outdoor dining for covid but the little tables they have are available to sit if you get takeout. Ok, my husband and I come here ALOT. Even when they've changed the name or the ownership a couple times, we still came. One thing that we love when we come is that as soon as you open the door and step into the restaurant, everybody who works there greets you at the same time with the same enthusiasm "HELLO!!!!!!" We always crack up. The last time we were there, they made accommodations for us by turning off the AC because we were sitting right underneath it. They also cater to my picky needs by switching out the seafood soup broth with miso broth. Always great service. Always great food. Always great cool cinnamon tea. This sushi restaurant is my favorite one in town! The sashimi was fresh and the spicy tuna was just as fresh! I've tasted the spicy tuna at a handful of places and you can see that those places have premade spicy tuna because it is super orange and mushy. However, here you can tell the tuna is mixed with spicy sauce making the fresh fish deliciously spicy. They also have extremely cool looking rice. Black brown and white rice together ?? Fantastic sushi! DEFINITELY the best in Montclair; hands down winner. Much better than Yoshi (restaurant that it replaced). Absolutely fantastic food, just a classic, no nonsense great sushi restaurant. Service was wonderful - the staff was accommodating, friendly and attentive. I asked for one of my rolls with no avocado, and our waiter informed us that he wouldn't charge us as much, as he was concerned that the roll wouldn't be as big without the avocado. In addition, we weren't charged for our miso soups, and at the end of the meal, were provided with a complimentary beverage - a delicious cinnamon spice cold tea. Absolutely delightful! I want you to remember... You're in NJ. The fish will not be jumping out of the water onto your tray, but this sushi is pretty darn fresh. A lot of reviewers forget this when going to a sushi/seafood restaurant not near the water. That being said, it's my go to spot for sushi in the area. Typically, my girlfriend and I get a drink at the liquor store next door (it's BYOB). We frequent this spot (once a month) and get a roll or three each. Also, they got this phenomenal soundtrack that sets the mood and gets my belly ready for sushi. If you're in the area, it's the best spot and it's not crazy expensive. I always try a new roll too, to keep it fresh (like the sushi) Enjoy. PRO TIP: Low sodium soy sauce available upon request and they give you some free crab taco thats... quite delightful. read more

My wife and I stopped in for a quick lunch. This was the worst sushi experience I've ever had. Not sure if they were having a bad day, but I will never go back here. The edamame was stale and we actually sent it back. The sushi was just tasteless and the rice was actually not cooked. The sushi was not edible and we actually did not finish our meals. The only decent thing was the soup hence the 1 star. Total lack of effort and the overall experience was horrible. I would not recommend eating here. read more
