We ordered from Sushi Koshi for the first time for our 17 year old's birthday dinner. We placed the order through Seamless. After waiting over 45 minutes, we checked the Seamless order tracking and it showed that the driver delivered it already however it was not. We called Seamless and Sushi Koshi to figure it out and ultimately we received a refund from Seamless and re-ordered from Sushi Koshi. Once we arrived at Sushi Koshi to pick our order up this time, the manager on duty ( I didn't get his name) was adamant that he wasn't going to charge us due to the Seamless error. The order was roughly $110 and I stated that it was the Seamless driver who basically disappeared and it wasn't the restaurant's fault. The manager still wanted to not charge me for the order but I was insistent for him to charge me. The manager reluctantly charged me however gave me a 50% discount. Not too many businesses run like this one these days, sometimes it seams as if businesses pride in taking care of the customer no longer matters. I felt the exact opposite leaving this restaurant. Not only we were treated like life long friends/customers, the sushi was delicious also. Sushi Koshi has customers for life now after our experience with them. read more

My husband and I were craving sushi. I yelped some places because our usual place was closed. We saw this place had good reviews and a high rating. We looked at the menu and saw they had a good lunch specials so we decided to give it a try. We were very disappointed. I'm not sure if it's because we ordered take out or if the quarantine affect the quality but the sushi was not good. They also forgot two of our rolls. The spicy tuna, you could taste the fish wasn't fresh even with the fish being smothered in spicy mayo. The California and crab roll also didn't taste fresh. The imitation crab taste off. The only roll we enjoyed was the spicy salmon. Maybe we will try again once the quarantine is over but for now, we won't be going back. read more

Eh. Pretty mediocre sushi rolls. Portion sizes were smaller than I was expecting, for the price. The sashimi platter also came out partly frozen- some of the fish pieces had ice crystals still on them, and it wasn't a pleasant mouthfeel. Some of the pieces also tasted overly fishy. The decor was pretty cute, though! And the owners were super nice. Other than those positives, I don't think I will be back. read more

This place is truly exquisite. I ordered the lunch special bibimbap with grilled chicken instead of beef. It was the best bibimbap I've ever experienced; it was so fresh and flavorful. The lunch special included miso soup, salad, a crunchy appetizer, and hot green tea. They even brought out a sushi roll for me to try, the sushi was excellent. I got all this food for a total of $11.74, an amazing deal. I am so pleased and I will certainly be returning soon! read more

What an unexpected surprise! This is the best sushi I have had since moving from Manhattan. The tuna was excellent, and melted in your mouth. The yellow tail was excellent as well. My guy and I popped in here for a quick lunch - we only had 20 minutes until we had to meet our lawyer to sign papers for our first house (yay!). - the staff was extremely kind and friendly, and they were extremely quick to bring us waters, salad and soup (with lunch meal) and ensure that everything was to our liking. Solid sushi. We came here for lunch and really enjoyed ourselves with the sushi platter. That's right, nigiri all the way. Fresh, succulent morsels of melt-in-your-mouth salmon, tuna, yellowtail... drooling yet? What was really interesting was the "mixed rice" in the sushi. Since our waitress proffered it to go with our sushi, we thought, why not. It's black rice--Google it if you're unfamiliar--and, if you're into brown rice, you might like the slightly nutty texture and flavor. Purists and white rice lovers would probably be better off sticking to white rice. The fish-to-rice ratio was quite generous, too. The prices are quite reasonable. We paid about $10 each for a sushi platter which comes with 5 pieces of sushi, a choice of a California roll or a tuna roll, salad, and miso soup. Other rolls range between about $5 to $13. Of course, the more you pay, the more epic and complex your sushi roll becomes. They've also got a typical selection of Japanese dishes like teriyaki, tempura, udon, yakisoba, and a few "house specials," Korean dishes like Jop-Chae, Bulgogi, and Bibimbop. I'd definitely recommend this place to others for a solid, casual Japanese experience. read more

Black rice? Yes, please! What really stands out here is their option to make your sushi with black rice (which is apparently more nutritious for you), mixed with white rice, or just white rice. The fish and other ingredients were fresh and played their parts well in the melody that is sushi/maki rolls/hand rolls (whatever your preference). I had everything made with the black rice. Interesting. Texture and flavor was like a cross between brown and white rice. Slightly nutty like brown rice with a bit of the satisfying carby-richness of white rice. Ordered a couple of specialty rolls, none that were memorably bad or good. I also ordered my usual Salmon Skin hand roll. Automatic favorite. The salmon skin was SO crispy and mix that with the black rice and nori wrap around the outside, I was in love... up until I had my mom try it. It was never to be seen/tasted again. I ordered two more. Last words: BYOB! And there's a liquor store next door. I noticed the staff was speaking Korean to each other so when I go back, I might want to split one of their Korean dishes. I hate giving negative reviews. We have been coming here for years, numerous times a week. I like spicy tuna rolls without spicy mayonnaise and asked them to put Sriracha on instead and was told they wouldn't do it. I said why and was told the owner doesn't want to change the way they serve it. I asked if they would not put cucumber in and they said yes, but THAT is not how they serve it yet they were willing to change that recipe but the Sriracha was too much of an ask. I said there are many sushi restaurants in Montclair and said I should go to them. The ego of this owner is not the way to treat customers and their asks. He assumes that his spicy mayonnaise is different than other sushi restaurants? Nope, THEY ALL make it with spicy mayonnaise so why be so protective of his supposedly secret spicy tuna recipe. I met with two of my friends last night for dinner and one of them suggested this place based on the Yelp reviews. Let me just say, THE REVIEWS ARE RIGHT! This little hole-in-the-wall is a GEM to say the least. The staff couldn't be any friendlier. They make you feel like you're part of the family as soon as you walk through the door. We started with the shrimp dumplings as well as an order of the vegetable gyoza and the avocado salad. Both dumplings were outstanding and the avocado in the salad was extremely fresh and delicious. After that I ordered the House Roll and the Lobster Tail Roll. I've had sushi in many of the top restaurants around the country and this ranked right at the top. Next time I will try their mixed rice instead of the traditional white rice to compare the difference. All in all, I couldn't have been happier with my experience here and I highly recommend that you try it for yourself. read more

It's off the beaten path, compared to the busier restaurants on the main street. Take it from a sushi lover / traveling foodie, this place delivers. The sashimi was fresh, served on black rice was very unique isn't seen often at sushi restaurants. The black rice added a unique hint of sweet flavor. Just go for the sashimi combo dish, you can't go wrong there. The best thing is, a liquor store is right next door and they have Sapporo beers. You can easily pay 3x as much eating at the sushi places on the busier streets of Montclair. Save the extra cash for Sapporo beer. read more

The lunch specials are legit (Saturdays too!). 3 rolls plus soup and salad for ~$12 is a steal. Sushi and sashimi lunch special is $15, as is the chirashi bowl (which we didn't try). The blended black/brown rice is interesting, and doesn't change the taste of the sushi much. It wasn't the most delicious or fancy sushi ever, but for the price it's a perfectly serviceable place to get your sushi fix. I have my favorite sushi spots in New York but, could not get to them to satisfy my craving as I was stuck in my hometown of Montclair, NJ. My favorite thing about this place was they offer black rice to use in your roll. The black (purple) rice is wonderful. This place is great place to eat. First time coming in here and very impressed. The food is very tasty and have enough every order. The price is very good compare to other Japanese restaurant around Montclair and Bloomfield. We ordered Ramen soup, Spider roll, Shrimp tempura, California roll and Chicken teriyaki, which all order is prepared good and fast! They gave complimentary appetizer and it was amazing being you don't know what it is and it taste good because you dont expect what will it taste. I took an older friend here who is sushi resistant. He thoroughly enjoyed the two rolls we ordered, the Star roll and a Spider roll. The black rice used was visually pleasing and had more taste and texture than the usual white. Yakitori prepared right and edamame fresh, hot and salted just right. Waitress was personable, when my friend asked for a fork, she brought one, but also took the opportunity to present my friend with a pair of training chopsticks to practice with during the salad course, next time no fork for him. I had a very good BiBimBop serve in a hot stone bowl and my friend enjoyed his Boolgogi. Nice to have a few Korean options to enjoy after a few goods sushi rolls. Price point was reasonable. The positives: The sushi rolls with black rice is pretty good. The restaurant also gives a complimentary appetizer (some kind of spring roll) which was tasty. I also enjoyed the shrimp tempura as well. Place is BYOB and there was a liquor store right next door. Perfectly convenient. Though I liked the sushi, I really didn't care for the chicken teriyaki. It was not prepared like the bento boxes in standard Japanese restaurants. It looks and taste like a Chinese dish with onions and peppers. I was going to give this restaurant 4 stars but had to lower to 3 due to the lack of freshness of the dessert. They only serve ice cream 3 different ways for dessert (scoop of ice cream, fried ice cream or Mochi ice cream). We ordered a scoop of green tea and vanilla ice cream as well as mango Mochi. They all had freezer burn. I love dessert and Mochi ice cream, but the dough part was so hard and old that it ruined my joy. Guess diners here rarely order dessert? The sushi and sashimi here is AMAZING. I am a snob when it comes to fresh salmon, and this place is the best when I have ever had! Compared to other sushi restaurants around the area, this is definitely number one! Try the mixed rice ....you are missing out if you don't at least try it with one of your rolls. I ate dinner here tonight. Small resturant with very nice owners. The meal was quite good and the establishment is BYOB with a liquor store just next door. My only complaint is the service was quite slow but we didn't mind as we were among friends. I ordered two special rolls #50 and #51 Spider Rolls and Hot Green Rolls. Both rolls were quite tasty and I highly recommend the Hot Green Roll as my friend also agreed. read more
