Dim sum in Tucson...at a sushi place?! Sure, why not? A surprising find in Tucson that satisfies the cravings of someone who grew up eating dim sum at variousChinese restaurants. This place has a lot of solid dishes and a few not-so-perfect traditional dim sum dishes. What is dim sum? Think of it as a Chinese version of tapas. Various dishes are steamed and served in small metal or wooden baskets or plates. People in Hong Kong love to eat dim sum and drink tea as their version of brunch. Traditional dishes include pork spareribs, chicken feet, turnip cake, ha gow (shrimp in a translucent wrapper), and shu mai (pork and shrimp in a wonton wrapper), plus various dishes that are pushed around in a cart for customers to pick to their delight. Although Sushi Lounge does not have a cart full of dim sum being pushed around and requires placing an order from a menu, there is a large amount of dishes to choose from. Chicken feet were flavorful and tasted authentic. Not a lot of people enjoy the cartilage and lack of actual meat on the chicken feet, so choose wisely or be bold and try this dish out. It's marinated chicken feet with black beans and tastes sweet. The turnip cake had a bitter taste to it which is normal for radish; however, overripe or radish going bad may also have produced such bitterness (also slightly burnt food may create this as well). It was a decent dish. The ha gow (shrimp) was served with 4 per dish. Great shrimp filling with flavor, but the wrapper was a bit thick compared to the filling inside. Decent, but could use some work. The shu mai was seasoned perfectly with pork and wrapped in a wonton wrapper. Definitely one of the better dishes. Egg tarts were deliciously filled with custard and a semi-flaky crust that could have been more flaky. Other dishes not mentioned specifically were decent at best but probably will not be ordered again, including shrimp cheung fun, barbecue pork, and trip. Best new dim sum in Tucson! This restaurant has existed awhile as a sushi spot, but recently started serving dim sum on the weekends. This was such a good call on the owner's part because it is easily the best dim sum in Southern Arizona. Since they just started out, they don't do it a la carte yet. However, that means all the dim sum items are made to order and super hot and fresh. The reason I enjoy it more than other dim sum places is because of the quality of the dumpling and bao (steamed buns). The dumplings aren't too chewy and literally melt in your mouth. The bao is perfectly soft and fluffy, and has a hint of sweetness. Dumplings and buns aside, there seriously was not a single dish I did not love. If you go you have to order the salted egg custard bun and quail egg shumai. I also recommend ordering a lot at once, because the wait can be a bit in between orders and let's face it -- you'll want to eat everything you order because it's just that good. read more

The food here is delicious and I absolutely love that you can get *some* dim-sum options at any time. Most places only do dim sum not the weekends, so I love that! I dined on a Thursday night and was able to get a lot of my dim sum faves. I was a little worried at first about eating at a place that's doing both sushi (Japanese) and dim-sum (Chinese). Typically you're either good at one or the other, but not both. However, I had a little bit of both and I have no complaints! I will definitely be coming back on a weekend to try more of the dim sum options. My only complaint is that this place could be cleaner. My table was a little sticky, as was the condiment rack and the condiment containers themselves. I know a lot of people will probably not be a fan of the less-than-attentive service as well, but I'm used to it and have no problems with taking a more "aggressive" approach aka asking or more of what I need ahead of time. The pork belly won us over! The meat and fat were nice and juicy and the skin was cooked to a crisp! Not burnt but like a chicharron! Great wonton soup as well! Not just dumplings and broth. All I can say is Wow! This hidden gem in South Tucson does Dim Sum right. No carts with lukewarm food. Everything is made fresh and HOT! With that said, I didn't try the sushi this trip, but this is one meal that I will soon not forget. I'm already making plans to go next weekend so I can try additional items and get a repeat of others, like the egg tart. We ordered these a second time. The pastry is impeccably flaky and buttery. The custard has a tinge of sweetness, so it passed as a main instead of dessert, probably my favorite dish here - so far. Taro pockets and turnip cakes were also exceptional. Other dishes were shrimp with green pepper, deep-fried shrimp balls, and BBQ pork pastry (least favorite of the bunch, wished it had more filling and less pastry). I forgot to snap the menu for reference, so I'm leaving off a couple of things I can't recall, but promise an update as soon as I return. Busy at 1:00 on a Sunday with about a 20 minute wait. Service by Victor was outstanding, although the dishes weren't named when came out, so we referred to the picture menu. You order your dim sum like you order sushi, on a piece of printed paper and you fill in the amounts you want to order. I've eaten here a few times and the food is great. The place could be cleaner and the service more attentive, but the place strikes me as a family ran business. The dim sum here is good because it's cooked to order. I know there's appeal to seeing the carts being pushed around and actually seeing what you're getting, but Tucson isn't the right market for fresh dim sum to be kept in rotation. I've had a lot of their offerings and they're all well prepared. I've eaten here with people who grew up with dim sum and they say this place can compete with dim sum of larger markets. Was really craving some dim sum so I decided to look around. I know most dim sum places only open on weekends but I was happy to know that there was a place that offered limited dim sum dishes. Everything's made as you order so they ask you to have a 20 minute wait time which I didn't mind. The turnip cake came out soft, chewy, and slightly crunchy on the outside which I loved. The beef tripe portion was a lot smaller than I'd liked but I didn't mind too much because the taste was delicious. Well seasoned! I didn't get a picture but the quail egg dish was amazing as well. This was the second Sunday in a row wife and I went for Dim Sum here. Excellent food. I particularly enjoyed the BBQ Pork, Pork Spareribs (small bits of cooked meat with very small bones attached. Delicious.), a noodle dish the name I cannot remember, and some wonderful pineapple buns for desert. One quirk in this restaurant is they use paper plates and Styrofoam cups. I want to make it abundantly clear that I am not a picky eater whatsoever, and I find something to enjoy in basically every restaurant I'm at. And I enjoy giving positive reviews to as much as I possibly can to local businesses - sadly, the only good part of my experience here was our waiter. I just wish we didn't order so much because sadly a lot of it went to waste because of how bad it was. I was very excited to try a dim sum place and I was also in the mood to have Japanese food so this seemed like the perfect choice! Sadly, I have basically nothing positive to say about any of the food. I ordered a bento box so I could get a lot of variety. The salmon teriyaki was super small and very much over cooked, the fried rice under it was flavorless. The tempura was extremely greasy, the sweet and sour chicken was dry, the yakisoba was bland, and the miso soup tasted like hot water with no flavor. I also got 2 dim sum items, the bbq pork buns and sausage buns; they were ok but there was way more breading than meat which made it difficult to finish from how much bread there was. I'm just grateful that I decided against getting sushi, because my friends ordered it and started feeling sick shortly after, and it's obvious why because all the nigiri/sushi looked old and dry; I added a picture of my friend's salmon nigiri you can see the side starting to turn gray (I made sure she didn't eat them it was food poisoning waiting to happen). I was also put off by how extensive the menu was; there were 5 different menu pages all listing different things and and it very confusing and overwhelming. The food was also very expensive considering how poor the quality was. I am just very disappointed by this experience. My recommendation to the owners/managers of this restaurant would be to downsize the menu considerably, and maybe stick to dim sum and improve the quality of the dim sum items since there isn't a lot of competition there. IN-FREAKING-CREDIBLE!!! Legit, the freshest dimsum i have ever had!!! Luckily i wasnt starving too bad because it was a bit of a wait for everything i ordered. But once i got it, i learned quickly why and that it was worth the wait!! Luckily too i had the lotus tea stick rice that was readily avaolable more so i enjpyed that while i waited for the rest. It was good but could have used more flavor to the rice and meat filling. The shrimp rice noodles not only tasted amazing with generously sized shrimp, but the rice noodles were so fresh, they kept slipping off my chopsticks. It was prolly the only time i dont mind them that slimy lol. And the har cao shrimp was superb as expect! Customer service was good, but we were not fans of the food. The ambiance was casual. When we arrived there was not many people, we sat where we please which was nice. There was multiple menus to choose from. Unfortunately, the sushi which is what we specially came for was not it. For the hand rolls specifically the California roll it was the whole piece of crab not the mushed thing. Maybe that's just what I was expecting, but the other sushi we got had not much flavor. It may be called "Sushi Lounge", but the selling point of this restaurant is not its sushi, but the Chinese Dim Sum. COVID-19 edition: take-out only; dining room is closed. Restaurant closed M-W, open Th-Su. Orders take a minimum of 30 minutes to prepare. When you arrive for pick-up, call using the same phone you used to order, and they bring the food to your car. Menu is large and complex -- look to the restaurant website for PDF versions of its picture menu. We had a large and somewhat complex order. Even though the restaurant was quite busy, our order was complete, correct, fresh, and on-time. We spent about $35 a person ordering a mix of Chinese Dim Sum and a few sushi rolls. I don't recommend the sushi rolls -- there are other restaurants in Tucson that offer a far superior Japanese culinary experience. The Dim Sum, however, seemed pretty authentic, and to my surprise, survived the 30-minute trip back home pretty well. We transferred the food to fancy plates and had a small party, because ... well. Dim Sum is party food. I look forward to being able to eat in the dining room. If you don't know, Dim Sum might be summarized as the art of Chinese steamed buns served a la carte -- savory or sweet, with pork or with shrimp, filled with soup, with egg -- plus a few culinary outliers -- chicken feet, egg tarts, BBQ pork ribs, sticky rice. I'm sorry to report I don't quite have the culinary cojones to order chicken feet, but we tried quite a few of the all the other available dishes on the Dim Sum menu, plus some of the standard Chinese offerings (fried rice, sweet and sour). I'm not a huge fan of Chinese food (my wife is), but I thought all of the various Dim Sum and other Chinese dishes we ordered were pretty good -- even the pork fried rice was far better than my usual experience. Unless you're already familiar with Dim Sum, you're going to want to visit the restaurant web site and download the PDF versions of its picture menus. We did. I think we took longer to look over the menu, deciding what to order, then we did eating the food. This restaurant is located across the street from the Tucson Rodeo Grounds. Their DIM SUM is offered only on Saturdays and Sundays. For Me, it was a long drive BUT WORTH IT! For sure GREAT Dim Sum. I've had Dim Sum in other, more popular locations and town and the quality is just as comparable. I've also had it IN Hong Kong if my opinion has any weight to it. The one thing is, is Dim Sum is an experience other then just the food aspect. Traditional Dim Sum comes out in carts and you select and grab as they come by. While some locations in town provide this to their service, sadly Sushi Lounge doesn't. They are made to order, which DOES guarantee freshness but takes away from the cart experience of what contributes to the Dim Sum experience. Don't get me wrong. I will gladly come back. Your experience with textures will vary! Don't forget to order a pot of tea for the table. Every single order was steaming hot. I love how everything is made to order. A recent Tucson Foodie article talks about how the owner is from Hong Kong and his daughter specializes in pastry. While the location is unexpected, you should expect delicious food. Hopped on Yelp and Sushi Lounge was the first to show up while also being relatively close my hotel. I can't recall the name of the last sushi restaurant that was located at this address, but this one is a tremendous step up. On my first visit, the dining hall was sparse -- only two tables occupied. It may have been bad timing. Right away, I noticed that the place is very clean and comfortable. It has a nice mellow feel. The photos of the dining hall posted here don't do the place justice. It's quite casual, though -- but I wonder what the ambiance might be after hours. There are three television sets. Two were tuned to food-related shows and the third to basketball. The music was relatively low -- and they were playing all these late 80s, early 90s music that was popular with the high school kids at the time. Weird. It would be the modern day equivalent of Bieber playing at a sushi bar. Strange. But, alas, it was not too-too distracting. The menu is quite comprehensive. Thank goodness! And with decent selections that are reasonably priced. My gauge for good sushi in Tucson is Shogun Sushi and Sushi Cho. I would rank this place as being somewhat comparable, though the other two joints in town have a better quality of fish. Still, I was very pleased with my selection. The server swiftly brought the miso and a very small salad -- which turned out to be the perfect size because of my order. But, boo! The miso was just warm. I went for the Poki salad and the chirashi bowl. Yes! They have chirashi! They also have other types of donburi and also sushi boats. The entrees include teriyaki chicken, katsu, sesame chicken, kung pao and a bunch of other Chinese dishes. All are under $10 for those. They also serve teppanyaki. As for my food -- very good. The Poki was very nicely flavored, and it was a heaping serving for a salad. Nice, large crispy cucumbers, delicious seaweed and a ton of different types of fish and shellfish. It needed only a bit more spice, but the wasabi took care of that (be sure to ask for it in advance if you want it -- it does not come with the salad). The chirashi was gorgeous! Beautiful display. The tuna and white fish, unfortunately, were not at all flavorful. But the salmon, eel, salmon roe and crab were excellent. I was surprised with the crab. Usually I steer clear of the stuff, but it had a nice gentle sweet flavor to it that made all the difference. So why not five stars? Couple of things: There was mad confusion about parking. There was a sign that said you had to pay $5 for three hours or $5 for two hours if you were dining in. I asked the attendant if you had to pay to eat there and she called out the owner who explained that, yes, they did charge their customers $5 because of the Rodeo Day events, but that it would be reimbursed at the end of the meal. *crickets chirping* Folks, I almost turned on my heels and left at that very moment. But he was apologetic about the confusion and never did charge the $5. And he did check in later to ask if I was enjoying my meal. Also, the server spilled some water from my cup into my lap when she went to put it down on the table. But she was overly apologetic, which was cool. And the owner and servers always came to check in at the wrong times -- the exact moment I took a bite into my sushi not once, but twice, and nearly 10 minutes after I had finished my meal. Also, they never cleared the appetizer plates from the table, which I found to be strange. Now you may be asking, so why not two or three stars? Because, in all, it was a very good experience. Also, this is by far -- I'm talking way far right field -- the better of the sushi joints on this side of town. And for you sushi lovers who like it raw, they have the standards, but also Hokki clam, tilapia, sweet shrimp, sea urchin. And they also have a wide variety of sushi rolls. All told, the prices for those generally run between $4 and $7 or so. So, yes -- quite the menu. Very nice and unexpected. I have driven by this place many times when heading back and forth to work near the airport. IT is not in the best part of the town. The building from the outside does not cause you go to go "Wow I should check them out". But, after reading several very positive Yelp reviews. I have to say, you should check it out. I sat at the sushi bar and ordered tuna, salmon, and white tuna sushi along with a Rainbow roll. The tuna and white tuna were amazing. I really loved it. The salmon was pretty good, but didn't seem as fresh as the amazing tuna. The Rainbow roll pretty good. Also, Monday-Thursday 3:00-6:00 is Happy Hour. It is $1 off sushi and sushi rolls.
