China Pasta House has been a favorite spot for a decade ( if not longer). The parking lot, dining room, and outside are shabby, but the food is delicious. I purchased all my favorites for under $20: four tea eggs, two pork steamed buns, and spicy shrimp rice cake noodles. There is a variety of soups, noodle dishes, and appetizers to choose from on the menu. Located across from the University of Arizona campus, I usually see the place filled with students. Today I stopped by on a Saturday, and it was empty inside. My order was placed and my rice cake dish quickly prepared. In the past I have dined in but today I ordered to go. I really was looking forward to eating here again. I had previously visited this restaurant about 10 years ago and from what I can remember, it was amazing. Fast forward to 3 days ago.......This place is filthy. I had to use the restroom and nearly threw up. There were bugs everywhere. The toilet had been taken over by some kind mite infestation. This is the worst food I've ever eaten in a restaurant. The same for my friend. I realize that China is huge so there are many variations of food from China. But the quantity that is served cannot make up for the lack of quality. We asked for water. It came without ice so we asked for ice. The server took our styrofoam cups to the back and added huge chunks of ice. There is an ice machine in the dining area that I looked inside of and it was apparently not working as there was no ice in it. We ordered steamed dumplings; they were ok. The Spinach egg soup (served in styrofoam quart cup) was hot water with one torn up piece of spinach and 1/2 of an egg. The soup was hot water slightly flavored with cilantro. We each had one spoonful and set it aside. We had the specials - spicy beef and spicy chicken, served in styrofoam containers. There was no spice in either dish. The beef was small pieces of beef attached to tripe or intestines. One piece of beef, the size of an extra large egg, had two large arteries/veins sticking out of it. I gave it to the really nice server (who barely spoke English), and tried to explain that this was "no good". She took it back to the kitchen and the cook started yelling. The tomatoes were unripe and hard. The chicken had vegetables that we were unable to tell what they were. The chicken was cut into pieces that were the size of a blueberry. After finding the questionable piece of beef, I was wondering where the pieces of chicken came from. Lots of cut up potatoes and cilantro in both the chicken and beef dishes. Everything was served in styrofoam. There were no plates; we had to tear a to-go container in half to use as plates. We were each given a plastic spoon and had to ask for a plastic fork to try and eat the food. The sticky rice was okay. Friend kept saying it was awful and I agreed. We finally gave up and left 2/3 of the food. The server came over to bag up the food and we told her not to bother. We will definitely not be going back. This was my friend's birthday lunch. Decent Chinese food with a much different scope than most places. There's aren't really a lot of American faves. Nothing fried and nothing sugary on the menu, but rather a lot of traditional noodles and an extensive selection of soup dumplings. The restaurant felt very bare bones in terms of atmosphere. Like neither the inside nor outside has had significant aesthetic changes since the 20th century. I find that to be an encouraging sign! Here's what I had: Kung Pao Chicken--Good flavor, and I liked how the chicken and celery were finely diced. Very generous portion--I only finished half. It just didn't really taste fresh. Like they had chicken prepped from earlier in the day and just reheated it. Pork Belly--seems to be the most popular dish on the menu, and I see why! Quite savory, and made even better with a tiny splash of chili oil. I would get this again for sure. And again, portion was definitely enough for two. What a chance find near the University. My experience with most Chinese places near a university is that they cater to students with Americanized Chinese food, but this little restaurant actually has some really tasty, authentic Chinese dishes. Everything is made fresh and the dish I ordered reminded me of my mother's cooking. It's a very unassuming dish (stewed beef with tomatoes over rice). The beef was flavorful and the tomatoes were not too sweet and not too tangy. It really hit the spot since it's a comfort food for me and it's hard to find in Chinese restaurants. They make their own dumplings and buns and I also got them to go as snacks. So good and flavorful. I will probably be back tomorrow for lunch since it is right across the street from where my conference is being held. Delicious! read more

Since I ordered delivery, I cannot remark on service or ambiance within the restaurant. I hope to rectify that one day. For now, I can tell you about food and show you some, unfortunately,low quality images. The deciding factor for me as to if to order from China Pasta House was the dish of Shredded Potatoes and Rice which included a modicum of shredded pork and enough jalapeno to give it good flavor, without being overly spicy. Of course,I did not know there wouldn't be more pork or jalapeno, at the time, and that would have been okay. Be aware, there is very little of either. Much potato and rice. It is a very tasty dish and if you like the thinking of Dr. McDougall, this is a dish that would sit fairly well within his ideas. He said if everyone ate a traditional Chinese diet the whole world would be healthy except if injured, or something like that. I believe China Pasta House is the closest I have ever come to traditional Chinese food in my entire life, based on what he has said, the writings of Pearl S. Buck and the book Why The Chinese Do Not Count Calories. That it sounded likely is why, after reading that particular dish description, I jumped in with both feet. This is healthy food, not full of oil or sugary sauces. Now, when Isay this is close as I got, I am not trying to imply that this is only close but no cigar. I've never been to China, I've never had a Chinese person invite me over and give me food, then say "Now, this is what it should be like!" I can only guess, based on things I have read and heard. I am pretty sure this is it! I got a tea-cooked egg, which was very reasonably priced and delicious. Never had it before. It's a little weird looking, but I have seen tea-cooked other things before so I got past that pretty easy. The egg, once peeled, has a beautiful marbled effect, in shades of brown, of course. The porked steamed buns are delicious and also differently shaped than any form of bun or dumpling I had before. They seem to be kind of in-between. Lastly, I ordered some soup. The soup is mild and pleasant. I got no variety of cabbage or pork, though, as you will see in the photo. So, in this I am disappointed. Not disappointed enough to demand a refund or harangue anyone. But definitely disappointed I might not order the soup again. As I was preparing to upload photos, I drank some of the soup and realized that even though it had looked clear and I thought I saw all the way to the bottom of the container, there were wonderful things below. The smell of bao buns steaming fills the interior of China Pasta House's tiny seating area. The buns are filling, and a whole meal on their own, but we came for dumplings. For a quick, filling but not overwhelming lunch, we split 15 cabbage and pork dumplings and 10 soup dumplings ("pork steamed buns" on menu). They come with a rice vinegar and soy sauce dipping sauce, and condiments like Sriracha and house made chili crisp are on the table. I also tried one of their many unique sodas from the refrigerator. I can't explain how amazing soup dumplings are. Per the internet, soup dumplings "have delicate skins that encase a pork-based filling and a gelatinized meat broth. During steaming, the broth liquefies, poaching the pork in a rich, savory soup." Basically, it's a very intense little umami bomb. How many people are at the restaurant will determine how fast the dumplings come out. It was just us and another table today so they came out quick. If it's jam packed during the school year, it can be a 10-15 min wait. Total was $26, which is good for two people in this economy. I love China Pasta House read more

The menu here is authentic mix if various chinese food. My son and I ordered the mushroom/spinach bun which came out as a huge large steaming bun that was both soft and delicious. I had the chicken/shrimp/scallop noodle soup. I was extremely surprised in a pleasant way at just how good the broth tasted. it hit me with a wallop. It was perfectly balanced in terms of seasoning and water to chicken fat ratio. really really good. the noodles are served separately and you add as much or as little at a time as you want. My son has the spicy beef soup. He loved it. It was Sichuan style with the tongue numbing pepper that he loved. The soups above were served in gigantic portions! We also ordered the veggie dumplings. You get 15 for $7.50!! We were too full and took them back to our hotel room. Great snack if your hotel room has a fridge. here too the dough was on the thicker side but done right. Dumpling mostly cabbage but super delicious. What i didn't like about this place is that it's ok to be a divey chinese restaurant, been to plenty back home, but in Tucson you should have ample AC. It was hot inside and not pleasant. Also they serve their dishes in styrofoam take out containers even when you eat in. Not a great eating experience. I assume this is a 99.9% take out place. This place has some pretty good food! My SO and I ordered fried noodles (comes with pork and veggies), beef stew noodle soup, shrimp dumplings, stirfry rice cakes, and xiao long bao (soup dumplings). The fried noodles dish consists of thin noodles stir-fried with pork and beansprouts and a ton of soy sauce. That's what makes this dish so great! All the soy sauce adds flavor and it was definitely cooked in a high heat wok which intensified the soy sauce flavor in the noodles. The beef stew noodle soup consisted of beef pieces, bokchoy, and noodles in a clear broth. It was a solid dish-tasty and great portions. This dish is a delight if/when you're craving broth and some noodles. I found it to be especially yummy when you add chili oil to it! The shrimp dumplings are a good size with a tasty filling, but I thought the wrappers were a bit too thick. The filling consisted of shrimp and maybe something else that I can't quite pinpoint. FYI-the menus here lack description. If you have any food allergies, you should probably ask and let them know when you're ordering dishes. The xiao long bao, aka soup dumplings, were decent here. There wasn't enough "soup" inside the dumpling. The "soup" is gelatinous pork/pork fat that's been refrigerated into clumps. It's cut up and put inside every dumpling along with the pork filling. Definitely hard to master the folding of these tiny soup dumplings, but delicious if you do it right! I digress, but the soup dumpling at China Pasta House aren't bad! I didn't find the xiao long bao on the menu and just asked the lady taking my order about it. I have no idea what the price is for this so I can't tell you whether it was worth the price or not. Last and also least, the stir-fry rice cakes came with shrimp and mushrooms. This dish is priced at $12.00, which makes it the most expensive dish out of all my dishes. I'm not a huge fan of rice cakes and this was made with soy sauce and a smaller portion than I expected with little shrimp. When I come back to China Pasta House, I probably won't get this and try some other things. Also, I like the drink (non-alcoholic) selection here. My SO got a green tea from the fridge and I got my mango drink. Delicious and refreshing mango drink! In terms of parking, there's parking behind/next to the place. A lot of food for just two people. All of our food came out fresh, piping hot and delicious! The Pork and Cabbage Dumplings are tender with perfect filling. The homemade noodles in the fried noodle dish are also wonderful. The noodles taste so fresh, melt in your mouth. The jalapeño in the dish infuses the noodles for a great low heat that builds the more you eat. This spot is the definition of a hole in the wall, which makes me love it even more. If slightly dingy hole in wall places aren't your jam, then steer clear. Service wasn't incredible, but it wasn't bad either, it was just.... steady. Great food. Good but a total hole in the wall. I arrived on a Sunday around noon and was the only customer in the place for about 30 minutes. There was a definitely a language barrier. I found this place looking for Dim Sum and this is not a Dim Sum joint. The lady looked at me like a spaceman when I asked about Dim Sum. I had a pork bun which was excellent and ran about $2 which is a great price for a snack. I then ordered the pork and leek dumplings for 15 pieces the price was $7.50 for a pretty generous portion. The pork belly dish was amazing. The flavors were excellent, but I added some chili oil to kick it up a notch. This place is a hole in the wall near campus.
