A solid four star establishment! I wanted to take my wife to a recent discovery, a Chinese restaurant in Tucson, but I found out they are closed on Tuesdays. So I searched Yelp and I found this gem, Jun Dynasty. We traveled an hour and forty minutes from Maricopa to try this place. I could've traveled to other Chinese restaurants in half the time in and around Phoenix and Scottsdale, but something just intrigues me about Tucson. Jun is located in an older part of Tucson and its location can be misleading. But trust me, you want to try this place. We were immediately greeted and seated after we entered the establishment. We were handed menus and asked what we'd like to drink and I ordered Oolong tea and water. The menu included several authentic dishes not found at other Chinese restaurants. I kept it simple though and ordered Walnut Shrimp for my wife, Steamed Dumplings in Peppercorn sauce, Salt & Pepper Fried Fish, and Bok Choy. Steamed dumplings were the first dish brought out. I ordered this because my wife can't eat anything spicy. Well this had a kick to it even I wasn't expecting. It was numbing, literally! Some restaurants will even list this type of dish as cooked in numbing oil. Soon after swallowing the dumpling, a numbing sensation enveloped our tongues. Sorry honey; I thought I ordered a mild dish. I ended up eating all of them. It was hard tasting the other dishes because of the numbing effect. The walnut shrimp came out next and I have to say, they were probably the best I had; even better than Fat's in Sacramento who set the bar back in the day. My wife devoured them. Bok choy was brought out next and she also loved them. They were served with I think a garlic sauce and it was very tasty. The Salt & Pepper fried fish were delivered last and they were also good. However, my wife preferred the walnut shrimp. I did have better S & P fish elsewhere, but these were still good. I can't speak enough about the staff. This was our first time here and the food was good. The restaurant was full which is always a good sign. We really enjoyed the scallion pancake as an appetizer- it was crispy and delicious. The chili oil dumplings weren't spicy, but flavorful. The spicy hot pot was also not spicy, but good in depth of flavor and had a lot of protein. I would have given 5 stars if the spice was there. Maybe next time we can ask for extra extra spicy. Service was really attentive and our waitress was very thoughtful. I don't come to Jun Dynasty as often as I should. Every time I visit, I'm reminded of how consistently good the food is. Their takeout is always reliable, the portions are generous, and the quality never seems to waver. Recently, my family gathered here for dinner, and everything was delicious. We ordered the Ma Po Tofu, Beef Chow Fun, Salt and Pepper Fish Fillet, and, of course, the Peking Pork Strips, which are an all-time favorite and a must-order for us. Located in a random shopping center but once inside, you forget about outside lol. In my opinion, it looks nice inside and you're greeted. The staff is very friendly, seems like they all could be family. We started with pan fried pork dumplings and crab puffs. The pork dumplings were really good. The crab puffs are so far, thee best crab puffs my wife and I have had! They look like any other crab puffs you can get other places but once you try them, you'll understand once that flavor hits. We ordered Mongolian shrimp, beef noodles, sesame chicken. The shrimp and noodles have a spice kick, but the flavor was delicious! The Mongolian shrimp did have a lot more veggies and little shrimp but it was okay. The sesame chicken was great too. The beef noodles were also good. Have a fresh garlic taste to them too. We were on the hunt for a new family dinner spot and craving great Chinese food with solid vegan options for us adults with dietary restrictions. Enter Jun Dynasty. We pulled up to a completely full parking lot and a crowd of people waiting out front, which is always a promising sign. When we asked for a table, we were quoted a pretty long wait. To be fair, we did not make a reservation, so that one is on us. Normally I am not the type to wait that long, but the restaurant smelled absolutely amazing. That aroma alone convinced us to stick it out, and I am so glad it did. Once we were seated, our drink orders were taken and delivered quickly. The menu had a wide variety of dishes, including several vegetarian and vegan options, which we really appreciated. It would have been helpful to have more detailed descriptions on the menu, but our server was happy to answer questions and walk us through everything. We ordered the ma po tofu, braised tofu with vegetables, and vegetable chow fun noodles. My daughter went with the orange chicken and wonton soup. About ten minutes later, the noodles and soup arrived. The bowl of soup was big enough for the entire table, which made my daughter very happy. The noodles were delicious, and shortly after we started eating, the rest of the dishes came out. The braised tofu was loaded with large chunks of bell peppers and flavorful black mushrooms. The ma po tofu came in a vibrant red chili sauce topped with Szechuan peppercorn and brought just the right amount of heat. Everything was absolutely delicious. Fenomenal menu here. Pork dumplings in red chili oil were fantastic. Spicy and sour Napa cabbage is very good in combination with pretty much any protein on the menu. Sautéed green beans are very flavorful, however these are incredibly spicy. Milk tea is yummy. I don't understand their hot and sour soup though so will not be ordering it in the future. Just wanted/needed takeout. So ordered the broccoli chicken and the green onion beef on line. By the time I got there the food was done and bagged and Ives's in and out in 10 sec. I was happy they put everything inside these impenetrable plastic containers because the ride home on our city streets was plenty bumpy. I finally got the containers opened and was oh so underwhelmed with the taste. There was plenty of broccoli but the sauce was bland brown uninspired and watery even if they had dumped in an extra helping of garlic. The beef dish wasn't any better. There were some green in it along with probably an entire sliced yellow onion with the same poor excuse for a sauce as the chicken. These were not cooked by a Chinese chef. Nothing in this order was elevated to best in town flavor , no taste that goes with being made in a wok. Say something nice. I Did. The order was ready when I got there. Even on a bad day I can make a better Chinese stir fry sauce. I won't pickup here again. read more

I love that their menu has so many gluten friendly options and that it is clearly labeled. The best thing I ate were the garlic green beans. They were so good I had to go back for a birthday lunch so family could also try them. They can get busy so it's nice they have a dedicated parking lot so that you can always find parking easily. Ok, so I was never a " crave Chinese food" person. Let me tell you that this place has made me that person! My husband and I have gone back every weekend since we discovered this place 1 month ago. Every time we go back we try a new dish. No disappointments yet and I don't think we will ever be disappointed. My favorite is the vegetable hot pot. The texture of all the delicious vegetables and different forms of tofu are amazing! The service was amazing the first time, I should say super friendly but since then we've had a server who is quick but not friendly so maybe that's a slight complaint, she's walking right in the line of being rude. Lots of variety and made fresh to order. High quality meats and other ingredients. Loaded with flavors. Table loved the fried buns, which were like little pockets of sweet and fluffy donut. The wontons/dumplings were also a highlight. The brisket noodle soup was very flavorful and loaded with noodles, but there were several pieces of meat that had a lot of rubbery skin attached. The food was good and the server was super attentive. The prices were certainly reasonable, lunch menu from $11-$18. The restaurant was much smaller than I expected, and quite outdated. Servings were generous. The veggie egg roll was tiny, and not as good as a nearby local hamburger place that serves egg rolls. The hot and sour soup was awesome, and very spicy. I had my favorite, sweet and sour pork, which was good, but average, like one might expect at a Chinese buffet. The large mound of fried rice was below what I was expecting--no egg, no bits of meat, just a few peas and carrots, and very little flavor. Hubby had orange chicken, which tasted very close to the sweet and sour pork. Glowing reviews of long waits to be serveed and every table filled, were over enthusiastic. Only 4 tables had customers. Plenty of parking. The cooking area, which can be seen from the dining tables, could use an upgrade. The scent of irresistible food cooking was absent. Maybe because it was an early lunch on a Wednesday? We enjoyed our meal, but left wishing we had gone to our favorite Chinese buffet. Sadly, the buffet doesn't serve sweet and sour pork. It's one of my two very favorite places in Tucson for authentic non Americanized Chinese dishes (the other is Jewel's Noodle house- a must try too, see my review!). At Jun Dynasty I love the Stir Fried Hot & Sour shredded potatoes (they reduced the spice level, I recommend asking for spicy if you eat spicy) , the Jalapeno W/ Dried Tofu sheet noodles, and the Yu Xiang Eggplant. I now have a favorite Chinese (Szechuan to be exact) restaurant in Tucson! Everything was perfection-from the pork dumplings with chili oil (one of their signature appetizers according to our fine server) to the vegetable hot pot, complete with a flame underneath to keep the broth simmering the multitude of veggies like mushrooms, cabbage, peppers, and tofu to name a few - and two kinds (that I counted) of flavorful noodles: one had a long, thin soft texture and the other was broad and flat. Our waitress was at our table within seconds of my arrival. I met my friend there about 4:15 so it was deceptively quiet inside - fast forward to 6 pm as we left a bustling, packed restaurant. She was already seated a few minutes earlier enjoying her Arnold Palmer (chocked full of fresh lemon slices and ice). I wasn't sure if the iced milk tea would be too sweet so I asked for a sample and she brought it, fast. It was a definite yes, as it had that delicate balance between sweet and bold black tea flavor. I wanted to try other options from the vast menu but settled on my old stand by, Kung Pao chicken. The thin, juicy slices of chicken, carrots and red and green pepper had just enough peanuts sprinkled throughout a spicy yet delicate sauce the Sichuan region is known for. According to a quick search, Sichuan cuisine relies heavily on ingredients like garlic, dried chilies, and Sichuan peppercorns to create its signature "mala" (numbing and spicy) sensation, whereas "Chinese food" can encompass many other regional styles that are often less spicy. I experienced this fun numbing effect while sampling her vegetable hot pot - and my chili oil dressed, tender pork dumplings. I'll go back for the Xinjiang Beef she mentioned was a speciality. They also have a meat version of the Spicy Hot Pot that has everything from beef to seafood to pork belly. I'm already looking forward to it. read more

What a delightful surprise! I came here for lunch today with my son. Neither of us had been here before, but we are so glad we gave it a try. We both had lunch specials. Mine was the hot and sour soup, sesame chicken with white rice and a vegetarian eggroll. It was the best hot and sour soup either of us ever had! The eggroll was hot, crispy and delicious. Truly abysmal dining experience. We came toward the end of a rush so we understood that it would take a ut longer. However, after 3 tables that came on after us, got their food, ate, paid their bill and left before our meal came out, we were pretty upset. No one came to check in on us. We had to hunt down our waitress for the check because she was just not available after 20min from finishing. After 45min before our wood even came out, the waitress informed us they were out of fried rice, which would have been nice to know while ordering. The food? Overall mediocre. The Dan Dan noodles and iced tea were great. However the Yu Xiang pork and Sweet and Sour soup wasn't and can best be described as "sugary," which is not a word I would have ever thought I'd use to describe Chinese food. The items listed as spicy were mild at best which was very disappointing and misleading. It's abundantly clear that they do not know how to handle a crowd and are not equipped for it. The only reason we came here was because Chef Wang was closed, which is a restaurant that actually is equipped for handling crowds. Honestly? Just go there?
