The sushi rice was dry, the eel in the Rock & Roll was bits of fatty leftovers and skin (I took most of it out), and there was barely any shrimp tempura in the San Francisco roll. I did let the server know. I might expect this quality from a supermarket, but not a restaurant. Disappointing. My wife had a chicken katsu bowl, which was a simple combination of breaded chicken, rice, and sauce with miso soup: simple, but the ingredients were great and it tasted delicious. Watch out, sushi in Calistoga ahead! Staying in town and wanted a low key place to eat. Sushi sounded nice and light, exactly what we were looking for We showed up at 6, and were able to sit at the bar. Very quickly the place filled up with a primary local crowd. Just what we were looking for, a place to relax and it really did feel like we were back home at our local sushi joint. Ordered the sashimi, as that is our normal benchmark for sushi places. The fish was pretty good and cut very generous. Next we tried the gyoza and those puppies were spot on. We had to try a roll, so gave the diablo roll a try. It was a baked roll, something we do not normally order, but it was really good! Prices were a little lower thank other restaurants in the area. Kinda what one would expect. The nigiri was a bit pricey, more so than one would expect. We decided against trying it as it did not seem worth the price. Overall it is worth a stop, to relax and enjoy the bustle of a busy sushi shop. The staff did get overwhelmed and we did not receive a dish. This may be a city with one sushi restaurant vs. 50 sushi restaurants thing, but I thought that the food was super overpriced and really not very good. I'm breaking my moratorium on negative reviews for restaurants during the pandemic because this place is doing extremely well. It is at best a 2 out of 5 (the sweet spaghetti in the kids meal was completely disgusting, the sushi reminded me of grocery store caliber), but it's priced for 3-4 out of 5 sushi. I was exited to try this place in my visit to Calistoga. However it was disappointing. Walking in the host told me the waiting period and I said that it was fine and he just stared at me. I had to tell him to add me to the waiting list. He seemed annoyed by my request . The wait for food is a long one! Our sushi had more rice than filling. Our sashimi okay. The same host that put me on the waitlist was our server. There was definitely a different treatment towards my table versus the surrounding ones. To the other tables, which I must add were all occupied by individuals with light skin color, were constantly visited. He stopped to socialize, make small talk and constantly checked on. Great little restaurant with really good sushi. We come to Calistoga at least once a year but have never tried this place. So glad we did because it will become a regular in our dinner rotation, on our annual visits. It's quite small so I'm glad we made a reservation in advance. We saw multiple groups get turned away because they were full. All three rolls were delicious and fresh. The captain crunch was our favorite. Happy to have found this little gem. read more

First time here, did take out. Mark my word, I am going to become a regular! All the workers were friendly and nice. Sushi Mambo has the best menu item names, definitely made my night reading them! Most importantly, great quality fresh fish, large portion sizes and reasonable prices. I have celiacs disease so I was excited when I found out they have gluten free soy sauce. The dining room and deck can fill up fast -- it's a nice place to eat! -- so you might want to make a reservation or order take out. Living in Calistoga, I've eaten here many times over the past several years, sometimes by myself or with different family members and friends. Sushi Mambo has a fairly standard Japanese restaurant menu with some unusual Mexican influenced dishes, too. I tend to have specific expectations so I often order the same thing. I always enjoy their hot tea, miso soup, seaweed salads, agedashi tofu, tempura dishes, potstickers and simple maki rolls. My husband likes more variety and usually orders one of the special rolls. He's tried many of them over the years and has enjoyed them all. I like the cozy comfort of this restaurant, the tasty food, pleasant staff and the kind service. I recommend it! read more

Large portions! Friendly staff. We ordered a $50 dinner special of sashimi, spicy tuna, and California roll through the "Dinner for 2". It was ginormous and can feed 3-4 people. We devoured it easily. Bar seating is pretty great. We were attended to frequently, despite it being really crowded. Great quality food, at a reasonable price (especially by the standards of sushi and Napa Valley, neither of which are cheap.) We usually do carry-out for convenience, but the inside seating is cozy and nice atmosphere, as well. We don't eat out often, but have had at least 4 or 5 meals and never been disappointed. I have never written a review on any restaurants before .However, this restaurant just amazes me sooooooo much that I would definitely recommend you to go there. We visited Sterling vineyards yesterday. Since My husband is a huge " eel lover" , and my kids love udon, we decided to have Japanese cuisine for lunch! Thus, we asked one of the staff working in the vineyard and he suggested us to go to Sushi Mambo. He said that it is the most famous Japanese restaurant in town. You know what? He is totally right. We are so glad we went there. First, The food portion is huge comparing to other Japanese restaurants I have been to. With my two kids( 5&2), we ordered one eel don, one teriyaki chicken bento and one tempera udon. I am not a good photographer, but I assure you that the size of the eel is Huge!!! And The eel tastes so yummy!!!For the tempera udon, look how many temperas in the basket. We did not even finish it. My daughters love their teriyaki chicken in the bento box so much, and the cold noodle comes with the bento is super good as well. Second, the price is so fair. Since I am a tourist to Napa Valley, I don't want to eat fast food nor pay for the food that is not worth the money. Last but not least, I forgot my diaper bag in the restaurant, and I did not realize it until I arrived home( we live 2 hrs away). ( it is a big size longchamp bag, you know how big it is! My husband thought I took the bag with me and I thought he did) anyway, I called the restaurant and the owner immediately agreed to mail the bag to my condo, and she even offered to take care of the shipping charge!!! I am super impressed by their hospitality and warm hearts. Thus, if you are in Napa Valley, you should go there to grab a yummy bite. UPDATE: I highly recommend to Go Read the actual health inspection, they are out of compliance on at LEAST 4 issues and were cited for 4 corrective actions!!! including on the Fryer, which big surprise, cooked the food that made me ill. My daughter and I were in the area and decided to stop for Sushi before heading out on our long drive home. When we walked in we were seated immediately. There was only one other family eating at the time. No one took our order for about 20-30 minutes. The food didn't come out for another 20-30 minutes. The whole time we were waiting there were several other people coming in and out. I noticed two tables come in, eat, pay, and leave before we even had our food. When it came time to pay the bill so we could head out that even took forever. We were there for almost two hours. The food wasn't as good as expected based on the long wait time, rice was not fresh on the sushi rolls, there was way more rice on the roll than fish and the hot tea was Luke warm. When I asked him again he then poured the water spilled it all over my napkin and the table and never said he was sorry or tried to clean it up. I understand things are tough since the pandemic. From reading the reviews it seems like it's been tough a long time. The noodles were not so good and neither were there Japanese pancakes. It took a very long time to get the meal. My girlfriend and I had a pretty disappointing sushi dinner the night before and after reading some of the reviews here as well as seeing the reasonable prices, we decided to check it out. We got the pork gyoza, Caterpillar Roll, Spider Roll, Saba-Dabba-Doo Roll and Diablo Roll. Each roll tasted amazing and each was very distinct from the other. In addition, the fish tasted very fresh even though we were fairly inland compared to places we've tried in Santa Rosa. Overall, we give this restaurant 4/5 stars because the food was absolutely amazing but the service was a bit slow as they only had 2 waiters and 3 people in the kitchen for a very full indoor and outdoor dining area. I'm so sad I never got to experience this when it was in Napa. I'm still not sure why they moved their location but it is definitely worth the drive. You get to see beautiful vineyards & then eventually end up in the cute town of Calistoga. The place was a bit small, I expected it to be bigger but that does not take away from the intimate vibe it gives off. The servers are friendly & were able to seat us even without a reservation. The food took awhile to get out but it was worth it. By far some of the best sushi I've had. My order was wrong the first time but the staff corrected it quickly & got it out to me at a very efficient time. I wish I could come here more often. read more
