Upon arrival, I was told that I could not sit at the sushi bar and eat. If I wanted to order I had to go sit in the common area of this dining hall. After this discussion, I said fine and asked for a menu. They then told me I had to get up and order at the register and view the menu glued to the counter. They took the order of a couple who sat down maybe 2 minutes before me in front of me. I will never come back to this place. They seem to be the last man standing in this dining hall, and with this kind of customer service, they won't last much longer. It's a shame because I love the food and I am a regular at handies and aiko as well. Won't be back to any of them.

Had a great experience at Sushi Masa on Westheimer! The restaurant is aesthetically pleasing with a fun, playful atmosphere that makes it a great spot for lunch or dinner. Having visited this chain in Japan multiple times, I was excited to try out one of the US locations. Some items are very fresh and high quality, while others miss the mark to me. I ordered a variety of nigiri and my favorites were the salmon belly, scallop, and spot prawn nigiri. All three were rich and buttery (which is right up my alley), and very fresh. There was absolutely no fishiness from the scallop, and it had a perfectly clean and slightly sweet flavor. Raw shrimp nigiri is one of my personal favorites and the spot prawn did not disappoint with is firm, yet buttery texture. The salmon belly was much better than the regular salmon nigiri, which was too lean for my taste, and I felt that the sear on the aburi salmon didn't add much to the tasting experience. While I was very excited to try the Yamayuki chutoro nigiri, I was disappointed by chewy connective tissue that was not properly trimmed off the fish. I was also excited to try the engawa (other of my favorite nigiri) but it didn't stand out to me. While the fish was hit or miss for me, I appreciated the attention to detail in the rice served with each nigiri. The rice to fish ratio was perfect for me and the rice is visibly light brown on account of the excellent seasoning. In my opinion, this is a difficult restaurant to review. Compared to other conveyor belt sushi restaurants, Kaiten Sushi Ginza Onodera is definitely much more premium and servers higher quality fish with greater attention to detail. However, compared to other premium sushi restaurants with near-equivalent prices, it lacks consistency in quality across its menu. Standout items aside, I'm not convinced that the restaurants high prices are justified by their food, however I do appreciate that they do serve high quality fish in a perceivably more casual setting. Overall, I think the restaurant is worth a visit, especially if you've never experienced conveyor belt sushi before, but I would not make this a staple in my list of high-end sushi spots.
