Stopped by last night because my wife wanted ramen. I didn't know that this place existed until I drove by the other week; so, we divided to give it a try. The service was quick and friendly. The place was very clean. They played a video on a screen that we were facing that had a first person view of walking through Japan...probably Tokyo. That brought back memories. It was a nice touch. We ordered green tea, which came with its own warmer. Not as hot as I like, but the tea stayed warm through the entire meal. This looked like legit matcha rather than just tea bags in hot water. For the meal, we had tonkatsu ramen and the spicy duck ramen. We loved them both. The tonkatsu wasn't fried in a batter. It was thinly sliced with nice carmelized edges--very good. I ordered a spicy miso ramen, I believe it was their "Daddy Duncan's " style miso ramen. I'd give it about an 8 out of 10. It was good, flavorful, and had a nice spice level but it wasn't wowing. My boyfriend and I shared the General Tso's chicken, and that was a 10 out of 10. Perfectly crispy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside. It came with white rice and everything paired really well together. This is the second place I've gone to that has great General Tso's chicken, and that is definitely a compliment. I would absolutely order it again. We also tried the "Honey moon" appetizer which is a stuffed jalapeño. It had crab and cream cheese with eel sauce. The jalapeño was too crunchy for me, my preference is to have it softer but I feel like the flavor wasn't really there. One of the standout appetizers was the beef tongue from the appetizer menu. That was a 10 out of 10. It came with a sauce on top that was really good and brought everything together perfectly. We had the coconut shrimp appetizer as well. The shrimp itself was decent, but the fried coating tasted like the oil wasn't very fresh. It was crunchy, but the flavor of the oil came through, so I'd rate that about a 5 out of 10. We also ordered fried calamari . I'd rate that around a 6 out of 10. It was okay, but when you bit into it, the octopus would slide out and leave you mostly with the fried outer crust, and the crust itself wasn't that flavorful. TLDR: pretty good sushi at a very reasonable price but service was definitely a miss. This place has a great location in the main strip in front of first colony mall. It wasn't very busy around 12-1 pm on a Saturday. There was one large group and otherwise no other parties. By the time we left there were several more groups. The way the waiters work kind of confused me, seemed like all of the servers shared every table, and I think that was the downfall of our service. Our orders were taken quickly, but the rest of the food came out at weird intervals. It felt like the large group confused everybody because all of the servers were trying to manage all the orders together. We ordered all off the lunch menu, so everything came with soup or salad. One of the entrees came out first (hibachi steak) and we had to ask for the soup and salad, so someone clearly forgot to bring it. The sushi came out a little later maybe 10 minutes after the steak. As far as the food: Miso soup was pretty standard, a good size and savory. The hibachi steak portion was just ok, it was for lunch but $16 seemed a little high. The meat was definitely a little over cooked and it came with a very small side of mixed vegetables. Wouldn't get this again. The sushi specials seem like they're really worth the price though. The Aki special was $21 and came with 6 nigiri (got to customize) and a special roll. I got the Aki roll, filled with spicy salmon and had salmon and avocado on top. A good size and very tasty. The nigiri were also decent, I liked that I got to choose from a wide variety of them. I hope that this was just a one off experience from a service standpoint because the sushi itself was tasty. If I came again, it would just be for the sushi. read more

Found this place while traveling for work, and it was great! Very Japanese like, the ramen was great! But what I like the most was the Steam Buns! After indulging in a little too much shopping at Kendra Scott, we decided to give Aki a try. The restaurant has a sleek and clean ambiance, with comfortable bench seating that provided plenty of room--refreshing compared to some tighter dining spaces. We sampled a variety of dishes: Garlic Edamame - A definite hit! Well-seasoned with a great texture. Shrimp Tempura - Light, crispy, and not greasy at all. They even included a few tempura vegetables, with the sweet potato being our favorite. Chicken Katsu Bao Bun & Shrimp Fried Rice (requested with no onions) - The shrimp fried rice was the standout dish. Clean, flavorful, and came with seven large shrimp. While the shrimp could have used a bit more seasoning, the dish as a whole was excellent. Beef Teriyaki Bento Box - The beef was cut into very small pieces, which my husband didn't love, but the flavor was decent. The bento box included a California roll, vegetable tempura, a spring roll, and fried rice. It also came with a choice of miso soup or salad (with ginger or miso dressing). The ginger dressing was especially strong and flavorful, which we really enjoyed. Service was solid--nothing extraordinary, but friendly and efficient overall. They now have 2 locations! While this one is a bit different...it's still good! The only complaint that I have is not having the onion soup on the menu! I love that soup!! I went on a Friday afternoon during lunch and it wasn't very busy. It was clean and they still have that fresh new look since the place is fairly new. My waiter was nice and let me know that even though this is AKI, it's a bit different from the other by HEB here in Sugar Land. I got the Temptation roll and Y U M M Y!! We came here on a Friday and we ordered a bunch of appetizers (Chicken Karage, Veggie Tempura, & Gyoza , 2 bao buns (chicken and pork belly), sushi rolls (shaggy dog, queen spider roll, & volcano roll) and 2 chicken skin skewers. Another great Japanese option in Sugar Land! The menu is sprawling with selections for every family member to enjoy. Sushi, bao, ramen, izakaya - they have SO many options, and the food is actually good. The skewers were excellent. You select a meat/veggie skewer, then a flavor (salt, spicy, or teriyaki). My favorite was the lamb with spicy seasoning. My daughter devoured the pork baos, calling them "fire"... whatever that means. All of our appetizers were on point, and the sushi was well prepared. So why 4 stars? There were a couple minor areas for improvement: 1. Their specials are not well displayed. When we were there, we weren't aware of the sushi specials going on. I only discovered them when I went paid the check and glanced at a TV with rotating deals. Make sure you ask your server about the specials BEFORE you order. 2. The kids meal description is a bit misleading. The kid bento says it comes with kareage (popcorn chicken), furikake fries, dumplings, and ramen. We asked for no furikake on the fries, and they kindly obliged. To our surprise, the dumplings were coated in a sweet sauce, and the fries were sweet potato fries. They don't have potato fries. My kid really enjoyed the initial dumpling appetizer, which only had sauce on the side. He wouldn't eat the sweet potato fries because... he's 4. I hope the business will see these comments and make adjustments to their menu. Overall, our experience was great. We really enjoyed the food, and the turf area outside is great for kids to get some energy out after. I'm a bit worried since the restaurant is huge, and they were fairly empty on the Friday/Saturday night that we went. I hope they can get more business in! read more

A5 wagyu beef, it was nicely presented with gold flakes, definitely looked premium, however, I was expecting a buttery texture- which it was not. I had to chew quite a bit to break the meat apart. The sauce was nice, but if I'm having premium beef, I want it to shine on its own. Quite underwhelming, but for $6, not sure what I was expecting. We have frequented the Aki location on hwy 6 and were so excited to hear about their new location and added menu offerings. They have the same fresh sushi quality with elevated versions of their original menu that were absolutely delicious. Dishes of note were the Hamachi Kama (grilled to perfection), Tempura Appetizer and large pieces of sushi! Service was also top notch - Joy is incredibly kind and friendly. My favorite roll I ordered would be the queen spider roll (must try). They have so many sushi rolls to choose from and you'll want to order all just to try it out. Also ordered the shrimp dumplings and it was soooo goood. Food came out pretty fast. Rolls are decently priced starting at under $10 for the basics and up to $20 for the specialty rolls.
