I grew up in Chattanooga and Sushi Nabe is where I first learned to love sushi. I go back once or twice a year still when visiting home and it has never disappointed me. Not only is the sushi fabulous and fresh, but I have also had the chicken teriyaki dish on a few occasions and it is hands down the best I've ever had, at any Japanese restaurant, ever. While I am thinking about sushi I want to write about the absolute best place that I have ever had sushi; Sushi Nabe in Chattanooga. It is located in the Coolidge Park area of downtown and nestled on the north shore of the river. It may be a bit tricky to spot the first time but is well worth the effort. My husband was working up in Chattanooga and I was visiting him when we decided to try Sushi Nabe out. We sat in the back at the sushi counter. On the way back you will see a shelving unit housed with hundreds of personal chopsticks in boxes. Apparently the locals love this place so much they keep their very own chopsticks stored there. The owner's name is Yasushi and he was right there making fresh sushi and wasabi while all the while entertaining us with stories. The sushi was phenomenal! It was so fresh and absolutely delicious. This was the first time I actually ever tried raw sushi which I never thought I would do. I am glad I finally got the courage to do so and that it was here. I have now had raw sushi in other places and I know that I probably would never have tried it more than once if my first experience was bad. As for the rest of the menu I am uncertain but feel fairly confident that everything is good. We enjoyed the sushi so much that it is all we ate! read more

Hands down, best sushi I've had. The menu can be a bit overwhelming- in a good way- but there are some really great ones to choose from! My daughter and I stopped in for lunch recently. We got there right as they opened, but the people were very nice and they were ready for business. To me, this is a sign of a well run restaurant. The specials menu had good choices at a good discount. We ordered a couple of rolls off the special menu and a couple off of the regular menu. All were very good. I am not a fan of Miso soup, so I will leave that to others to comment on. If you don't mind watching people handling your food, I recommend sitting at the bar and seeing how the chefs work. It is entertaining and they might even pass you a sample or two to try out! The bill was higher than a "normal" lunch, but quality fish is not cheap. Contrary to many of the reviews we experienced very good service. Prompt waitress service, seating and food. We loved the atmosphere kind of Japanese eclectic kitchy decor. We all had sushi and rolls. It was all fresh and tasty. The only call out we had was that the rolls were not rolled tightly enough so that when you went to pick them up the invariably fell apart. We mentioned it to the proprietress as we walked out. Good sign that the owners are present and on site. She was gracious and accepting of the criticism. We would go back. read more

It makes me sad to have to give Sushi Nabe a 1 star rating, because it's one of the first things we fell in love with when we moved to Chattanooga. Aside from our first magical visit (who can resist the charm of Coolidge Park at night?!), the other 3 visits have been very disappointing (and the one time we brought guests with us, quite embarrassing!). We started going to Sekisui across the bridge regularly, but since we were in the neighborhood tonight, decided to give Nabe another try. We ordered a tempura udon for our kids, which they loved. My only complaint is that the two shrimp tempuras were on the small side. For me and my husband, we ordered the Alaska Roll and the mackerel nigiri, as well as the sashimi deluxe to share. The sashimi dinner at Sekisui ($24) is superb, so we thought we would order the Nabe version ($17) as a point of comparison. The rolls were...fine. A bit on the small side, but nothing terribly objectionable. Unfortunately, we couldn't say the same for the sashimi. First, the pieces of sashimi were small and thin. But size isn't everything, right? So let's talk about the quality. On the platter (size of dinner plate, basically), there were 5 pieces of tuna, a few very tiny pieces of salmon (equal to one piece of salmon at other sushi places), a couple pieces of octopus, a couple pieces of yellowtail, then inexplicably, one IMITATION CRABSTICK cut in half, one tiny cooked SHRIMP sliced in half, and two pieces of PREVIOUSLY FROZEN, THEN THAWED fish (we knew it was frozen because the fish was VERY watery when we ate them). Like I said, I can excuse the small size if the quality were good, but they simply weren't. Even as we were eating we were wishing we had gone to Sekisui instead. To add insult to injury, they charged us $5 for green tea!!! We know to expect higher prices since the setting was nice, but again, the quality and finesse simply weren't there. If you want great sushi at a great price, go to Sekisui (they have Happy Hour prices every night and even if you ordered off their regular menu, you get more quality for your buck...it really isn't more expensive!). If you want a great atmosphere, still go to Sekisui. It's not as "homey" as Nabe (it's more downtown modern) but the staff is friendly and knowledgeable and you can still enjoy views of the bridge and the aquarium and take in the downtown atmosphere. read more

Gross, I would not recommend. This place is super dingy, dark and just not what you would expect from the 4 star restaurant. The server had no clue what the ingredients are in the special rolls. I asked for a roll that has fresh fish, they recommended dragon roll which had smoked salmon in it. Very disappointed and would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

After hearing all the great things about Sushi Nabe i knew i just HAD to go. The wait was estimated at 25-30 minutes which was actually 36. I have had sushi and been all over the world and the menu seemed to be very americanized. I order the spider roll and the spicy tuna roll which were both a disappointment. The crab in the spider roll was bitter and over cooked. The spicy tuna roll was less than par. Both rolls were sloppy and loosely rolled. Presentation was very plain and nothing close to spectacular. I hate to leave such bad feed back as i love food and adore sushi but i feel for the price and "reputation" of such a place the quality, taste and presentation was embarrassing. read more

Love this restaurant! best sushi in TN! One of the best in the South! Pleasant atmosphere, usually good service. Nabe and his wife are great hosts and very friendly. Nabe is very creative and makes many of his own rolls and combinations; you wont get this quality and Sekisui or other franchises. I've eaten here 50-75 times over the last 5-6 years and Never had a problem or bad meal. This place was DELICIOUS. I had a sashimi platter and some Japanese pumpkin sushi. So good and fresh! The California roll was even good, and I HATE California rolls. So yummy. The person with me ordered teriyaki chicken and that was even MORE delicious. How? The rolls were a tad small, but packed with perfectly cooked rice and very tasty ingredients. I wish they had a better porch (opened would be lovely!) but other than that the service was fantastic, prompt and extremely friendly. Also, their Orient Appletini was Outstanding. We are Washington DC residents who passed through recently and were delightfully surprised by this restaurant. The atmosphere was very pleasant, with thoughtful décor, and nicely lit. The array of choices was rather large and wide, which allowed us to order just what we had in mind. We began our meal with some fresh edamame and vegetable tempura for our kids, and a miso soup and tasty ceviche for my wife and I. Having been to many Japanese restaurants in the past, we were happy that the kids were provided with crayons and paper AND these cool training chopsticks put together with rubber bands and paper. The kids felt competent and cool using their eating tools and this allowed us as parents to enjoy our meal better. In terms of taste, what captured our attention most was the selection of fresh sushi we received, which included a California roll, Alaska roll, and an assortment of nigiri. The fish was fresh, the presentation spotless, and the pieces displayed an extra little something that made it apparent that the person making the sushi was meticulous and careful in putting together our meal. All in all this is a great spot well worth a visit. The service was very good, the owner was friendly and approachable and we felt as though this was a good use of our time and money. We are taking with us a memorable dining experience from our brief visit to Chattanooga. read more

My wife and I visited this establishment over the weekend for a quick weekend getaway. I do not know which was worse the service or the food. As a couple that eats sushi frequently we were extremely disappointed. We both order 3 basic rolls each. They were poorly made and very difficult to eat. The taste was very unappealing not to mention the foul sauce atop one roll. It tasted like ketchup. We both only ate at most half of our order and did not take the rest home with us. Our server was rarely visible and rarely stopped at our table. We waited at least 10-15 minutes after we stopped eating to ask for the check and the rest of the process was lengthy as well. We will not be going back to Sushi-Nabe. read more

First time I came to Chattanooga was in 2012 and this was the first sushi restaurant I hit up. Since then, I hate to say the quality has really gone downhill. I could justify the prices in accordance to its quality about 5 years ago, but sadly the last few times I have been the rice has been mushy, soup is over salted, and fish quality is average at best. Menu is overloaded with items, so it's not the easiest of navigation. If you're in the area, sure check it out, but I recommend just taking the extra hour or two and go to Atlanta. read more

We were pretty disappointed given how highly recommended this place was. If this is the best sushi in Chattanooga, I just found my new business idea. The atmosphere was cool and funky, but the sushi itself was entirely lacking. The rolls were uncreative, heavy on the mayo, and not stuffed very full-- I felt like I was eating a rice ball. To add insult to injury, our bill was $80 for 4 rolls, one teriyaki plate, veggie tempura, sake and one beer. Also, that beer was bottled. No draft beer-- boo. I live in Chattanooga and will only eat sushi here. I have never been disappointed. The atmosphere is great and so is Nabe. Every roll I've had has been delicious and tasted very fresh. I tend to gravitate towards the spider roll, but my husband usually gets the dragon roll or the Utah roll. Both are fantastic. The udon is great too and is great to share.
