This was my first time visiting the newly opened Seattle location of Tendon Kohaku. The Bellevue location sets a high bar for service and quality, but Seattle did not disappoint. I've been to the Bellevue location a couple of times and this one is slightly bigger and has a special unagi menu. We all ordered the unagi tendon set which was delicious. The were 3 or 4 pieces of well-cooked unagi and the tempura was good as always. But they forgot to mark down which sauces we had picked and we just had to guess which one was which. We ultimately had to just go with it and it didn't matter much because there was barely any sauce to begin with. read more

This was my favorite meal of my Seattle trip. I am still in awe of how amazing this experience was. When I heard that they opened up a location in IDistrict, I knew I had to go. We came for dinner time and they immediately got us sat. The interior is really gorgeous with a lot of cute and immersive decor to really make your experience feel elevated. The menu is so big and flashy that it was kinda overwhelming but every dish looked mouthwateringly amazing. I got the unagi don set with my friends getting the uni carbonara and the katsu curry. We also got a chicken karaage to share. I was in shock. The unagi was so perfectly cooked with a light fluffy interior with a crispy outside to make a perfect bite. The rice was perfectly cooked and added so much more to the dish. The side steamed egg was also a perfect pairing for it all. The chicken karaage was also cooked amazingly and had a great taste. To my understanding, this chain is known for their tempura don set and their sweet potato dessert, but who am I to pay $14 for a potato and ice cream?? I made reservations about two weeks in advance and was seated immediately after arrival. The space seemed pretty small, so I can understand why there are long waits. Our server was very friendly, communicative, and attentive. I ordered their seasonal seared salmon + tempura set with an add on of their dashi broth to pour over my rice while my partner had their signature tempura set. It took awhile to get our food and the food runner forgot to bring my add on. The salmon was ok quality, not the best. Reminiscent of fish you get from the grocery store. The tempura was light, but got overwhelming after a couple bites. Chawanmushi and the rice were great. I was pretty disappointed that I paid $4 for dash broth, some strands of seaweed and green onion. It was very lackluster. My partner found his meal to be very heavy too after a couple bites. Our group of four came for a Sunday lunch and only had a 30 minute wait -- perfect amount of time for a quick walk around the area before lunch. Upon returning, we were quickly seated in a cozy booth that felt nice and private to our party. The menu has a range of delicious options, including tempura, unagi, curry, and udon dishes. I opted for the Mentaiko Cream and Ikura Udon Set, which you have the option to add Hokkaido uni to. The levels of creaminess, brine, and light spice were absolutely perfect! My boyfriend got the Beef Steak Aimori Tendon Set. The steak was perfectly cooked, and the tempura was so light and crisp -- best we've ever had. You can even make it a Tencha set with an add-on that includes extra condiments and kombu dashi to pour over your rice. All dishes came with miso soup, pickled yuzu cabbage, and chawanmushi, which was silky soft. I was really impressed by our server's attentiveness to our friend's shrimp allergy, customizing the chawanmushi to accommodate. I'll 100% be returning next time I'm in town. I've been wanting to try Tendon Kohaku for a while so I was very happy when I saw they opened a new location in the international district. We came for a late lunch on a Friday and put our name down for a table at the counter. It was a 10 minute wait and they have a text system so you don't have to wait at the restaurant. The restaurant is pretty big and they sat us in a nice private booth. The decor in the restaurant is very cute and it feels like you're in Japan. They're known for their tempura so we had to get it even though the udon dishes looked great. I got the Premium Tendon set which came with lots of tempura including the anago eel! Everything was really good, the tempura was crispy and not oily and included a variety of things (chicken, prawn, crab stick, green beans, lotus root, mushroom, onsen egg, and the anago eel). All served on a bed of rice. It was a lot of food, I was so full at the end of the meal. My friends got the seared salmon aimori tendon set and the sashimi aimori tendon set which they both enjoyed. It was a lovely experience...I have been to the Bellevue location but I didn't have tempura...I had the salmon katsu which was delicious but they do add the tater sauce all over your katsu so beware...it's a nice table side feature mixing up the tarter.,,but they just spread it out all over the salmon! This visit I got the special, Sakura tempura set. Definitely get the tempura, it's light, crisp & flaky. My husband got the Premium Tempura Set...which comes with a fried soft boiled egg! I had this place saved for 2 years on Instagram since I don't live in Seattle. Was really happy to finally get to try it. When I went to the Bellevue location the first day, it was unfortunately a 2 hour wait and so we didn't go. The next day, I learned to put my name down and wander around (was still a 90 min wait). The verdict: Good, but not life changing. I'm allergic to gluten, so unfortunately, my bar is a lot higher -- basically "was the food worth the allergic reaction?" And the answer was no. The mentaiko udon was tasty, but a tad too salty. And the beef in the tendon set was a bit tough and not fun to eat. Tendon Kohaku recently opened in the International District and is a few minutes walk from the Light Rail Station. My brother and I were excited to try this new spot. This is their second location in Washington and their first location is in Bellevue. I recommend visiting their website to explore their menu and secure reservations. The interior is beautifully designed. The dining area is in an L-shaped format and incorporates modern and Japanese touches. The focal point is their open style kitchen. I absolutely love their lanterns and high ceilings. Service was prompt and our server was very helpful. She even walked us through their menu and provided some recommendations. We started with a couple of Hayashi High Balls and the Kohaku Chicken Karaage. The chicken was flavorful, crispy, and glazed with their house lemon sauce. The appertizer paired perfectly with the Hayashi High Balls. For our main dish, we both ordered the Kohaku Kabayaki Unagi & Grilled Steak set. This is a half-and-half set of grilled unagi and steak served over hokkaido rice. This was served with chawanmushi, warm dashi broth, miso soup, yuzu cabbage pickle, wasabi, green onions, and nori. The chawanmushi was silky smooth and delicate. The miso soup is a nice and comforting starter. The yuzu cabbage complemented the steak and unagi. The steak was perfectly grilled and tender. The unagi was also perfectly cooked and glazed with their house kobayaki sauce. Our server made sure to explain the process of enjoying the set and creating an ochazuke. We left a bit of rice in the bowl, poured the warm dashi stock over the rice, and garnish with the green onions, wasabi, and nori. I highly recommend trying this option. I had a great meal at Tendon Kohaku today! I made a reservation online and was able to get one about a week out for dinner. There was a long line of people waiting for walk ins at 8pm on a weekday. I split the Mentaiko cream udon ($25) and the traditional tendon set ($20). Both came with a side of pickled cabbage, miso soup, and chawanmushi (steamed egg custard). The udon was super creamy and had lots of Mentaiko - it was delicious! The tempura all came out fresh and was light and not oily at all. They've quietly started taking online reservations, though it seems more word-of-mouth right now. While waiting, we walked around CID and stopped at Uwajimaya across the street, which made the time go by fast. The place was still packed when we got seated. Food highlights: the Kohaku Tendon set was solid--soft rice topped with a variety of crispy tempura (prawn, squid, pumpkin, lotus root, mushroom, chicken breast, crab stick). The creamy Hokkaido uni udon was the standout for me, even though it came out slightly lukewarm--the uni flavor was strong and there was a generous topping. Main dishes come with a complimentary side of pickled yuzu cabbage, miso soup, and chawanmushi (steamed egg custard). We also had the sweet potato crème brûlée with vanilla custard and vanilla ice cream. It was dessert-heavy in a good way--sweet, creamy, and a mix of earthy and rich flavors. My friend liked the custard layer more, and I personally preferred the sweet potato part. Service was friendly but clearly overwhelmed--took a while at checkout to get our card picked up. The restaurant itself is beautiful inside lots of bright colors, calming decor, and a very zen atmosphere that made it feel relaxing while dining. Service was excellent throughout the meal. Staff stayed on top of everything and were very attentive with refilling water, bringing napkins when needed, and checking in without being overbearing. The food was flavorful, well presented, and visually appealing. You can tell care goes into the plating and overall experience. My only complaint would be the temperature of the food. Most of the dishes came out warm at best, but not really hot or fresh-off-the-stove/fryer hot like I was expecting. Looking toward the kitchen, it seemed like components may already be prepared ahead and assembled as orders come in. Tendon Kohaku's newest location has opened in Seattle (CID). They're located near Hood Famous/Oasis and right across Uwajimaya. Parking is limited to the street although you could theoretically park at Uwajimaya and walk over (just make sure to get 2 hour parking validated by spending $20). The interior of Tendon looks very nice and similar to the Bellevue location. Generally, everything we had was similar to the Bellevue location. The curry was rich in flavor and the tendons were delicious. The only improvements I would add is to work on sending their orders out at the same time. My dish came out about 10 minutes before my other guests so it was lukewarm when everything came out. Lastly, there's also Seattle specific dishes involving unagi. Highly recommend making a reservation as well. read more

(5/5) Sliced Beef Brisket Curry Udon: the udon was served with a savory egg and a side of cabbage that really complimented the udon. The service was also great, from the welcoming hostess to my attentive server. Overall, I enjoyed my first dining experience with Tendon Kohaku. I am excited to take my friends or family here. I'm always mesmerized at Tendon Kohaku's decor because it's truly beautiful and feels like you're in Japan. Such a unique and fun experience you have to try at least once. They serve a variety of Japanese dishes that you can't find at most Japanese restaurants. I recommend the beef steak aimori tendon set. Normally I don't eat medium rare cooked meat but their sliced steak was really good. Tender meat and you don't taste raw flavor with this one. There's a couple different tempuras that come with this set like prawns, beans, pumpkins and chicken; all were delicious. What's unique about their tempura is it's so lightly battered and crispy but not greasy. Each tendon set also comes with a side of chawanmushi, miso soup, and pickled veggies. The chawanmushi was so silky and delicious. Mentaiko (spicy cod roe) creamy udon is another item I would recommend! I really love the sauce and roe flavors in this dish. The udon noodles are soft and not chewy. I always get this item when I go to Tendon Kohaku. Definitely get their creme brûlée sweet potatoes. This time, I got the matcha flavor. I think the matcha creme brûlée had a subtle matcha taste and nice caramelized top, but I don't think it goes well with sweet potato. Sweet potato was good but kinda hard to eat, especially the skin. The soft serve had a very strong bitter matcha flavor but still creamy and good. I would stick with their classic vanilla creme brûlée sweet potato rather than the matcha one though. Customer service was really nice! There's a QR code for you to scan and view the menu. It was hidden behind the sauces and nobody told us so we were just awkwardly sitting there waiting for them to give us menus at first lol. Prices are a little higher but I think it was worth it considering their food quality and portion size. This location is a lot smaller than their Bellevue location. We went during lunch on Sunday and it was about a 20 min wait for two people. FYI it is difficult to find parking in Chinatown so give yourself enough time before arriving. Tendon Kohaku has finally opened in Chinatown, so now a lot of us don't have to drive up to Bellevue and battle for their reservations as much! It has taken the place of Momosan which closed sometime last year. Though we now have two locations to eat at, there's still some waiting to be done especially since I power walked it here with a friend just 10 minutes after they opened on their very first Friday at 5pm, and the restaurant was already fully seated! I put myself on their waitlist for a group of 3 since I had another friend coming, but we did not get seated till everyone was present at around 5:15pm. When we did check in once my other friend came, we still had to wait about another half hour before actually getting seated as our table had to be prepared. In that time before and after my friend came, I spent time taking photos from the photo booth near the front entrance with whoever I was with. This place was walk-in only without reservations during this visit, but that has since changed as of this writing and now reservations for this location are open through their website. Inside is reminiscent of the Bellevue location: nicely decorated and wooden walls, a noisy kitchen with staff walking around with food and greeting everyone, and bright lights illuminating the whole area. I think there's more seating up the staircase after going up past the kitchen since both staff and customers kept going back and forth around there throughout my visit. If it's not seating there, then I can see why wait times can be long since there's not that many tables to begin with. The menu can be accessed via QR codes at each table and at the front where you wait. It's split into dine-in and desserts, and both have a ton of selections to choose from. A small handful of these dishes are even exclusive to the Seattle location, though labels say some of the items are not available until a later date. All three of us got their unagi aimori tendon set, and one of my friends and I got their lavender matcha latte (a seasonal offering); my other friend instead got their iced kuromitsu matcha latte. - Lavender matcha latte: lavender taste is strong, floral and sweet. The matcha is ceremonial and kept its grassy flavor profile even with the equally powerful lavender top. - Unagi aimori tendon set: this comes with freshly grilled Kohaku kabayaki unagi on top of white rice, along with shrimp and pumpkin tempura in the main bowl. There are sides of soup, cabbage and a savory egg that also come on the same tray. All sides are pretty standard but still really good. The best part was definitely the unagi; it was sweet, slightly smoky, and very tender all at the same time. Tempura and bowl placement was aesthetically pleasing, and the sides made this whole dish even better. Better yet that this dish is one of the Seattle exclusives! I felt the portion size for our tendon is a noticeable diameter smaller in this location than in the one for Bellevue, and this sentiment was echoed with two of my other friends who were not with me during this visit but instead went sometime before this writing. I'm still happy that I can get their tendon bowls via a much shorter commute, and that this part of the CID will have more traction as well. Tendon Kohaku is surprisingly affordable and definitely tasty! **Definitely make a reservation ahead of time** I ate at the Chinatown location, where the old Morimoto's used to be. The layout is a bit awkward but cozy and friendly for the most part. We both got the Kohaku Tendon Set for $19.95! According to their menu it's: "Our signature tendon served with golden battered prawns (2pcs), squid, french beans (2 pcs), pumpkin, lotus root, shiitake, chicken breast and crab meat stick atop Hokkaido-grown rice, choice of our signature , spicy sauce or Ginger sauce." If you're on a budget this is a great option with a lot of deliciousness headed your way! The tendon is crunchy and NOT soggy. It is very light and crispy...I wasn't disappointed. I hope they keep the level of quality up. I forgot to take a picture of what I destroyed but it's memorable and will make it a point to eat here next time I am in town. read more

We've been to the Bellevue branch countless times. We are a fan of the Tendon Kohaku restaurant because we just love their creative menu. Yesterday, we had a group of 4 that lined up an hour early to experience the opening of their new branch in the International District. It's directly across Uwajimaya. We even witnessed the ribbon cutting. As expected, this branch lived up to its reputation. The interior is beautifully decorated with Japanese accents. It's not as wide open as the Bellevue branch, but there are plenty of tables that weave through the space. You can see the open kitchen and action from where we were seated. The food is good, of course. 3 of my fellow diners had the Sakura Tendon which is as good as they looked---very spring, with top dusted in pink powder. It's a good portion---definitely a good value for the price. I had the unagi tendon and it was delicious. It could probably use a little more unagi, but it's alright. No room for dessert. Next time we'll try the uni carbonara. The service was quick and efficient. Our server was friendly and attentive---stopping by to check how things were going. There's street parking outside. Grand opening day to the public! Lined up at 1030am and the line was not long yet. Witnessed the short cutting of the ribbon and then Immediately got welcomed to the restaurant. I'm a frequent Tendon Kohaku enthusiast in Bellevue. This is the new place in Chinatown. It took over a ramen place that closed. They updated the place. It had the feel of the Temdon Kohaku like in Bellevue. We ordered the Sakura Tendon which they claimed to be the exclusive Seattle food item. There was the unagi and steak combination however it was not available yet. Food was great. Big serving of tempura and small portion of rice at the bottom. The bowl was served on a tray with chawanmushi, miso soup and salad. Nice place. Neatly decorated with Japanese bowls and others. I like it! Will try the other dishes later on. One thing I like about this location is you don't have to fight for parking. Plenty of parking nearby to get there. Upon entering the restaurant, it was bright and spacious with plenty of seatings. This location can accommodate large parties which is nice if you have a large group. After getting seated, we were instructed to scan the QR code by the table for the menu. I guess this is the new norm to view menu nowadays. After skimming briefly, we already knew what to order. We got the tendon set and the matcha sweet potato creme brûlée. Overall, everything tasted consistent with the Bellevue location. I really enjoyed the sweet potato dessert since it was warm and creamy, pairing well with matcha ice cream. One thing I wish the batter were a bit crispier. It was drizzled with too much sauce. I get that they just opened for a few weeks so I'm sure it's a learning curve for everyone. I wished I was able to give a 4.5 stars but the food quality matches with the Bellevue location. The service felt fast and professional, never felt rushed to order or to pay. The only bad thing, while it is still a fairly new location, the waiting even with an appointment took some time. It looks like other people had reservations as well and still had to wait. The parking around this location is def not the best but it's available if you're lucky. If you can take public transit, like the light rail which is a couple minutes walking distance. Still one of my favorite restaurants to go to! And this ambiance of this location gives me more Japan vibes than the other location. read more

Ordered the Kohaku Kabayaki Unagi & Grilled Steak Set, great portion and flavour, will definitely come again to try the other sets! Wait time on a Tuesday 7pm was around 30 min. Love the ambiance as well. read more
