$100 sashimi omakase and sushi platter

Nice sushi restaurant in downtown Seattle, steps away from Pikes market. The restaurant can get busy specially with all the foot traffic in the tourist area. The food is good and service is friendly. No Parking available.

I was wrong! Young kids running in the place I thought everything would be too spicy I thought millennial like? Atmosphere was too upbeat and bar like for me yet I got the ChiRashi and it was absolutely fu(king fantastic Very very fresh with enough of a rice bed to compliment each bite of sushi I asked for and received extra hot sake Very very fresh The guy serving me was easily 40 years younger than me But he took the time to engage in some chitchat Which I find very meaningful when I go to a restaurant to feel appreciated Thank you very much!! When I revisit Seattle, I will definitely come back and bring friends This is A great place to come by yourself or with friends, better yet a date I'm glad Yelp sent me here thank you Yelp. Thank you yelpers!

This place came recommended to us by a Seattle local as a great sushi/fusion spot. We went for lunch on a Friday and had no issues getting a table shortly after noon. Definitely request a happy hour menu if you're arriving for lunch or a late bite, especially if you're interested in trying a Seattle roll or if, like me, you like adding some nigiri to your order. Off the HH menu, the Laughing Buddha roll was incredible--I loved the combination of picked vegetables with the mango shiso sauce. It was a fresh and uplifting addition to our order. Service here was lovely. Our server was attentive and friendly, and made sure we had enough water and sake.

I've been to Japonessa a couple times for work dinners, which gave me a chance to try a variety of items. My favorites were: - Bad Boy - Crunchy and fried, delicious sauce - Ginger chicken - Very flavorful and nicely cooked - Short ribs - good flavor, nicely cooked - calamari - good, hard to go wrong! Everything was fresh, but most of the others rolls had cucumber or something else that made for a crispy texture, which is why they didn't make the favorites list. I also ordered a strawberry lemonade, which was decent, and a passion fruit lemonade, which was great. I'm sure I'll be back next time I'm in town!

Stopped in while visiting Seattle located across Pike's Market is this delicious Japanese sushi restaurant. Recommend making reservations on Open table as its pretty crowded. Great selection of sushi rolls and their omakase looked delicious although ill probably try that next time. Service was friendly and efficient and it was so thoughtful they gave me a complimentary dessert for my bday. They also have a great selection of great cocktails but we ended up ordering a bottle of wine.

Came here Valentine's weekend with my partner and her parents and had such a lovely experience from start to finish. Japonessa absolutely delivered. The sushi was super fresh, flavorful, and portions were incredibly filling. The menu has so many great options that it was hard to choose, but everything we ordered was delicious and beautifully presented. The service was also wonderful: attentive, friendly, and really made the whole evening feel relaxed and special, even on a busy holiday weekend. If you're looking for a spot that's great for a date night but also works well for a group dinner, this is a fantastic choice. Delicious food, warm service, and a great atmosphere. We'll definitely be back!

Overall pretty good. It's certainly not fine dining sushi but has some good value and dishes. The hostess took my waterbottle as they do not allow outside drinks, which I thought was a bit mistrusting and off putting. When I asked for it back the other hostess seemed confused as to why that happened and couldn't find it. Regardless the food was pretty good. The chicken karaage was not good, the oil it was cooked in tasted dirty and fishy like fish and chips. Didn't even taste like it was primarily potato starch. The Hamachi sashimi appetizer was the highlight, amazing and balanced flavor of umami, acid and heat. The rolls were fine, nothing super special.

Stopped in for a quick bite before hitting Pikes Place. This is in a high traffic high tourist area. They were friendly and welcomed me right in. I was sat immediately at the bar since I was dining alone. The food was great, a little pricey but that's the area I was in so... Over all great fresh tasting sushi and a nice warming tea for a cold Seattle day. I'd come back for sure

I've been eating here for years and just never disappoints! Their happy hour is all day, and it's nice when it's from 9pm to close when you want to get a late bite in! Cocktails are pretty good! I recommend the Super Bad Boy, Mexican Ninja and the Calamari! Those are my faves!

    Rose L.

Japonessa is a Mexican Japanese fusion. Got it during lunch and the restaurant was huge. Lots of seating, menu items, and everything. We tried out all sorts of items including the nigiri mix, toro which was our favorite, and the calamari. All had a great flavor and jive to it. When I visit Seattle, def on the list again albeit being a bit pricey. Staff were nice.

Food definitely did not live up to the hype I've seen online, and the service was even worse. We showed up about an hour before close, just in time for late night happy hour, or so we thought? Long story incoming. It was 4 of us, host automatically sounded annoyed we were there, and sat us in the dining area. We got a waiter, she was waiting on a bigger table that was each paying separately though so it took a bit before she got to take our orders. I knew about the happy hour from looking online, but there wasn't a happy hour menu anywhere, nothing provided, and nothing was mentioned either. Being a tourist in the area I didn't really feel comfortable asking about it, plus it was late and the service was already feeling rushed and lackluster, I figured maybe it's just offered in the bar or something. Mind you, bar seating wasn't offered in general. We get our food, mine and my friend's dishes were honestly not good, we left like over half the plate each, because it wasn't good. These are $23 plates each, keep in mind, for these yakisoba dishes we got. I got chicken, chicken was cooked bad, flavorless, tons and tons of onion in my friend's vegetable yakisoba, it was like it was end of the night shift and they just threw vegetables in there, but they didn't actually add flavor to the dish. The ginger was extremely strong and overpowering in both our dishes. Noodles were more of a ramen style than a thicker style, I've had both but prefer the thicker one. The yakitori was pretty good, no complaints. Sushi was good, though I'm still confused days later, both sushi rolls were the same price, but my friend's seattle crunch roll came with way more sushi than my other friends' roll, from the same menu area too. All of these 5 dishes come out to around 100, mind you. The next day we were thinking about the poor service and I called to ask about the happy hour pricing and apparently you had to ask for the happy hour menu from the getgo, lol. Never heard of that since usually it's part of the waiter's job, to entice you to buy more, rack up the bill more and thus they get a bigger tip. Not here I guess, that's not the motto here. Here the motto is, you might end up ordering from the happy hour menu, and even if you do you won't be receiving the pricing for it, if you didn't ask for the menu, that isn't automatic. My boyfriend did end up calling for the manager and she adjusted the pricing but basically said the waiters aren't encouraged to bring up the happy hour menu, and it's automatically applied in the bar area, but not the dining area. So I can't imagine the amount of people buying from the happy hour menu without realizing, and paying full price like we did. 3 of the 5 dishes we got were on happy hour. Overall would NOT return, seems scammy, misleading and the service was bad anyway.

This has got to be hands down some of the best sushi and chicken. There isn't really any parking near the restaurants as it is on a busy downtown corner, but very walkable if you are staying in the area. The order was ready right on time and the staff were very friendly. Inside was lots of seating and it was well decorated and clean. Bathrooms were well appointed as well. Highly recommend. Their chili oil is some of the most incredible chili oil I've ever had, I would come back just for that alone. Highly recommend!

What is in the sake sangria?

Pear, yuzu, and plum sakes, crème de cassis, Alma finca (orange liqueur)

    Hi, do you accept reservations?

Is it easy to get a table for walk in during the day?

I have no problem, but it's always right when they open for lunch.

What are the happy hour times during COVID 19?

I believe it is all day every day. I ordered off the happy hour menu to-go the other day pretty late.

    How's the parking?

Street Parking would be a challenge but there are parking garages

Is the super bad boy roll fully cooked?

    Fully cooked!

Are there currently sushi rolls on the happy hour menu? I was looking through the menu photos and it appears they are not included?

Yes! There are two pages to the happy hour menu. One has all the rolls and the other has everything else.

Do you have tamari or gluten free soy sauce?

    Yes!

    Do you need a reservation?

Not really, if you go early. Otherwise, yes!

    Are you open Memorial Day?

    Yes! Regular hours

Do they also have Happy Hours on the weekend? Timings?

There's only about 90 min a day that Japonessa doesn't have happy hour somewhere in the restaurant. Usually around peak dinner time, otherwise it's game on all day.

Is this a kid friendly place?

I never saw many kids there, however, there is plenty of seating where kids would be welcome. I do not know if they have a kids menu, and it is on the pricier end of the spectrum (but SOOOOOO worth it!).

    Can we order to go?

    Yes

Is Happy Hour available today, President's day 2/19?

    Yes!

Does anyone know for sure if they cook anything in peanut oil? One of my family members is highly allergic to peanuts and I want to take them here.

I do not know but would highly suggest you call & ask to insure the safety for your family. I'd be very surprised if this establishment wouldn't make any adjustments needed to serve you!

Is this all you can eat?

No. The menu is a la carte, although they have a good happy hour!

Do they have parking for free or even validating?

No "free parking" . We parked on the street not a problem, not offered "validation"!

    Do you allow dogs?

Never saw a dog inside while I was there, although service dogs would be an exception.

Is it possible to reserve a table for dinner in the lounge where Happy Hour runs until 8?

Happy hour is available in the restaurant as well as the lounge! I believe they seat larger parties in restaurant (they have a few nice large round tables)and you get the same happy hour pricing👍

What time is the happy hour?

Available when open until 6:30 in the regular dinning room and in the bar area till 8pm.

The space is elegant, unique, and lives up to the photos. I also want to recognize the manager, who was polite, professional, and kindly explained that reservations were required. I completely understand and respect that policy. Unfortunately, my interaction with the bartender before speaking with the manager was the complete opposite. As I tried to get her attention, I felt like she repeatedly looked at me with annoyance and made me feel unwelcome. Rather than simply explaining the reservation policy herself, she went to get the manager instead. She had a problem with Hispanics. She refused to engaged at all. The way I was treated left me feeling uncomfortable and embarrassed, especially as someone who was genuinely excited to visit. A beautiful venue can only go so far when the hospitality doesn't match. I would have happily accepted that reservations were required if I had simply been treated with basic kindness and respect from the start. I truly hope this was an isolated incident because the location itself is stunning, and the manager handled the situation professionally. Unfortunately, because of my interaction with the bartender I've added in the photos, I don't see myself returning. Sadly they have a Prejudice bartender.
