I used to really love sushi ran and I'm gutted to give it a poor review when it used to be my favorite sushi place in the bay area. I used to live in NY and whenever I visited, I would make a reservation for omakase at the bar. The menu was always exciting and the chefs were engaging. The price was good and omakase always came with fresh wasabi. I moved here in 2020 and my past 4 trips were severely disappointing. While fish quality is still generally good, nothing is ever amazing anymore. Omakase comes out all at once leaving the rice cold and the flavors a little lack luster compared to eating everything freshly made, piece by piece. They now use horse radish in the omakase rather than real wasabi- a cost cutting measure with covid for sure. But couple the obvious decline in quality with increased pricing and now this establishment no longer really stands apart from others. I'm sad to strike this place off my go-to list. Maybe I'll try again next year to see if things get better but I really doubt it will. read more

4.5 stars It's been a month since my bf and I came back from Japan, avoiding Japanese food up until now because we knew we would be disappointed with quality and price. I'm very happy to say that Sushi Ran has ignited my Japanese cravings again with the food quality and clean modern ambiance. Setting: After a hike at Muir Woods, we craved Japanese food and ended up here. It was a short drive to Sausalito, parking was easy for a Friday night, and we were able to snag a table for two pretty quickly. There are actually TWO separate buildings, serving the same food, but I guess a different atmosphere in each. Restrooms are outside both buildings in the cold, by the way. Bring your jacket. Food: I loved the clean, crisp, single sheet menus. I'm assuming they print new ones out everyday since there wasn't a wrinkle or stain in sight. We ordered: -Clam miso soup: definitely hit the spot on this cold day. My bf was sad he got 3 clams and I got 5. It was a larger bowl than expected, and the clams are rather large, so no biggie. - 6 piece nigiri: included shrimp, salmon, hamachi, tuna, and I think chef's choice of other two. Delicious and great quality. - Cod: Mmm, definitely order this. This was a mutual favorite dish, though pricey for portion size at $30. It is almost perfection, just a tad bit salty. But that's why there are veggies served next to it (kale and spinach) - Trumpet mushrooms: I love mushrooms so these were delicious to me - Creamy scallop roll ($13): miso aioli, tobiko, and avocado - Kaisen futo-maki roll ($19): tuna, salmon, hamachi, ikura, hotate (Japanese scallop), 2 other chef's choices, shiso, cucumber, and kombu wrap. Yeah, this one packs a punch, and I admire the amount of work and effort that comes with this roll. -Matcha dessert with ice cream and red bean: beautifully plated, fresh, and delicious Drinks: they have a wonderful selection of sake. We chose a 16oz serving and my bf liked it. Overall, a wonderful restaurant for date night as the quality and presentation of food is excellent. Prices can add up, but it isn't bad for the right occasion. As for attire, most people were dressed nicely, while we were in our hiking attire. We were treated the same nonetheless. She had strong accent and it is possible there were some things lost in translation between different cultures or English not being one's first language, but everyone at the table felt uncomfortable and somewhat upset by the quality (or lack thereof) of service by our server. The food is interesting, and they have a wide selection of various Japanese whiskeys and other beverages. The fish tasted fresh. We went with the selections chosen by our host as they had offered to pay for the meal. Will come back to try their omakase, which will give a better sense of how great this place is. Went to sushi ran for restaurant week. I had high expectaTions because I've heard great things about this restaurant. 3/4 of us picked the restaurant week menu. I had the Dungeness crab salad as my appetizer, their wagyu tenderloin for my main and buffalo gelato for dessert. The crab Salad was ok. Crab didn't taste particularly sweet. It was a normal ordinary salad. I also tried the shrimp dumplings, it was good but the veggies soaked in soy sauce got way too salty. I did like the dumplings moRe than my salad. My partner chose the sushi option for his entree and in my opinion that was the best option. My beef tenderloin was so small. A little portion placed on 3 cut up asparagus. The meat was tender, pre-cut but they didn't give you a knife. Flavor were fine, nothing too pronounced or special. I've definitely had better steak elsewhere. The sushi was the best thing. Great quality and fish was fresh. If you order sushi ala carte it's pretty expensive. Even though it's good quality It loses points in terms of value for me. Desserts were good. The buffalo gelato is incredibly smooth and the warm toffee cake is a nice sweet ending to the meal. All in all I left hungry and not very satisfied for 65 bucks a person. Mediocre and overpriced Ate there last night. Family of 4 adults, one child. The food: we've had sushi all over Asia and the $70 premium platter was just average. The fish was store-bought quality and they used a member of the kitchen staff to present (who didn't know the names of the all the fish!) The plating was boring and you could even see some of the fish was dry. Very underwhelming. The wagyu steak, 5oz at almost $50 was just ok. I asked it cooked to chef's preference which the waiter said was rare/medium rare but it kept cooking and the last slice was medium by the time I got to it. Should've come rare. The same vegetables were on Every plate we ordered- broccolini, cauliflower and purple yam. Why no more variety? The yams were room temp and the broccolini Way over salted. The Brussels sprout appetizer was tiny shavings in a small bowl. Oily and over salted. We didn't even finish. Chicken dish for our child was weird. Supposed to be grilled but was smothered in a strange miso-ish sauce that seemed to have a thickener. We don't drink so $290-way was overpriced (our teen had 2 Shirley Temples and they charged for the second-$8.50 for both.) I last went to Sushi Ran about 15 years ago and still recall that meal. Sushi Ran is one of the best restaurant and sushi experiences of Sausalito and Marin County. The restaurant has had some changes during covid, but the service and integrity has remained stable. Whenever possible, I sit at the bar and order directly from the chef. However, during the last couple years this has not been available. I'm holding out hope - this is a fantastic experience. Took my boyfriend here for his birthday and had the Omakase dinner at the bar. We originally had a reservation at 5:30pm but ran into some delays and had to push our reservation out to 8pm. We called the restaurant to let them know that we'd be late and they were very accommodating! The ambiance at Sushi Ran definitely felt more like a regular restaurant than an intimate Omakase experience. We were seated at the bar and the chef was serving us as well as two other parties. I'm not sure if it was because the chef was busy, but he frequently forgot to let us know what fish we were eating. He also didn't explain how the sushi was prepared which was a bummer because I think it's interesting to know how it was cooked/seasoned/prepared. All the nigiri could be found on the regular menu so we took guesses as to what we were eating. Halfway into our meal, a new party was seated next to us who seemed to be regulars here since they knew many of the workers. They clearly were given special treatment since the chef was making them really good looking sushi like multiple pieces of wagyu and uni even though they were doing the same Omakase dinner. It was a little disappointing to see them get all the nigiri. Decided to spend the day exploring sausalito and thought a nice way to end the day would be to eat here. Came here and got the omakase. I asked the chef what we'd be having in the omakase and he said it's called omakase for a reason (chef gets to choose). I thought ok, so I chimed in on what I'd like to eat (fatty fish!). While I was debating the omakase, the chef mentioned it's a great deal. I took a look at the menu and was like ok. Let's start with a couple of things, it was not a great deal. I would have rather picked my own fish and not eaten things like sardine (I've been to a lot of places, and this was the first and hopefully last time I have sardine as a sushi). The prices was breakeven. Also, he didn't customize the menu per our tastes. I believe this since everyone else at the bar got the same set of fish. I think most of the fish wasn't that special, were they tasty sure. Were they really good for the price we were paying? Definitely not. The toro was my favorite (I like fatty...). We supplemented the omakase with some other pieces, but at the end when we got home, we knew we'd have to eat some other food. It's 11 pieces with nothing else in the omakase. I recommend other places, for the same price range, go with Hinata in SF. read more

We were disappointed on many levels. First we checked in early and were rudely told they weren't ready, so we went to the bar. The bartender was also pretty rude. Finally we got to our table and our waitress was a bit flustered by many things. She messed up our sake order and brought us a bottle vs carafe, my husband told her a couple of minutes after we ordered that he didn't want wasabi on his sushi and she was super upset. She remarked that everything would need to be remade and stormed off. The food was also pretty bland. The sushi rice was terrible, nigiri was tasteless. All of this for 300 plus dollars. They serve regular diameter rolls but about an inch tall then they got the mega rolls the size of my fist and bigger than the soy sauce dish. This spot is uh-mazinggg! Everything we ordered was superb and deliciously fresh. Some of the best toro I've ever had. Nothing failed to disappoint and well topped expectations of every single thing we ordered. This tops one of my favorite sushi spots in the bay and will DEFINITELY make the effort to go back to Sausalito just for this little gem. This sushi place has been on my list and the opportunity finally came up! A friend and I came here for lunch, and was glad to do so as their lunch menu looked fantastic. I was debating between the sushi lunch and the chirashi, and the server suggested the chirashi, so I went with that. Having lived in Japan, I am pretty picky with my sushi. Overall, I really enjoyed the chirashi! Most of the fish was quite tender and delicious. I think one or two weren't as fresh and a bit more chewy, but it being lunch I know the freshest fish isn't always given. They also gave a nice pile of ikura, which made me quite happy as it's not often given in chirashi. The rice was also well made, and they had some nice toppings to go with the dish like perilla leaves and seaweed. Oh, and the miso soup tasted like a legit soup that I haven't had in a while with delicious seaweed. Service was fantastic. The hostess was quick to greet me at the door, and our waiter was super friendly and helpful. The interior the restaurant is beautiful. It looks like the restaurant is broken into two separate buildings, with only one opened for lunch. There are huge glass windows all around the restaurant, which I loved with all the natural sunlight. It's located in downtown Sausalito, so after a meal, it's a nice area to walk around and enjoy the waterside :) My friend and I got here a few minutes after opening during lunch on a weekday, and were barely able to snag one of the last tables. I can tell this place is definitely popular! Although the sushi bar had plenty of seats for those who don't make reservations and don't want to wait. But otherwise, I suggest making reservations as the people kept on coming throughout lunch time. Some of the BEST sushi in Marin! So thankful this is here, as it's tough to get much besides pasta in Sausalito so going into the city is necessary for most cuisines. Customer services: There are many waiter and waitress but I have to wait about 20min to take the order even though it's not too busy. The round table for 2 people near the bar is too small. I ordered 3 rolls, 1 soup, and 1 salad. First, the Asari Miso Soup with a lot of big, juicy clam comparing with other sushi restaurants. Second, I got the seaweed salad which is okay. The taste is nothing but salty. The main dishes I ordered was Soft-Sell Crab Roll, Crunch, Sunrise Scallop. The taste of these rolls are pretty good. However, the roll is too loose causes it's hard to use chopstick. I loved the Sunrise Scallop the most because the combination of the fresh scallop and the salmon on the top. As a local living in Sausalito, I've been to Sushi Ran a thousands times. Always loved the staff (Casey the bartender is the sweetest) and the food. Sadly I will never return as long as Bragen the hostess / Manager is employed there. Not only was she MIA when my party arrived - we stood outside for 10 minutes freezing and finally walked in and sat ourselves (I was on crutches) - but she had the audacity to give me crap for it. Service was terrible, had to ask for water 4 different times, the servers were very inattentive. Sausalito is a fun place to visit and enjoy the sights, sounds and tastes. This is my second trip to Sushi Ran and it was very memorable. The sushi was great, except a few varieties fell short of my expectations. The Crunch sushi looked better than it tasted, but the Miso soup was more delicious than I could have imagined. The Teriyaki Salmon Bento Box was just OK, but the spicy tuna sushi roll was amazing as was the sashimi.
