What an experience to dine at the bar for dinner service at Sushi Ran! I recommend making a reservation as the restaurant filled up pretty quickly despite our early dinner slot. The chef is detailed in his craft. I loved watching him put together the sashimi platter, adorning the fish with shiso, kelp, and sunomono. To drink, I tried the gluten free beer which I don't often see on menus, and was pleasantly surprised at how crisp and refreshing the taste was. We ordered a variety of sushi and also hot foods to try. We enjoyed all of the dishes we ordered. Looking back, I'm not sure if I had complaints about any particular one. I think the agedashi tofu is artfully done. I'm a long time ageda fan, while my boyfriend is iffy on it, but this one he thoroughly enjoyed. The fried fish with the house-made tartar sauce was a great appetizer to start off the meal. As for the fish, very fresh and quality. Our party of 4 was unfortunately treated very poorly by several servers. My 88 year old grandmother asked for a cushion or higher chair to sit on since they gave us seats that were comically low for the table, and one employee laughed at her and walked away. We had heard that the hospitality here was supposed to make the experience worthy of the buzz it gets but left feeling like they couldn't have cared less about us as diners. My fiancé booked omakase dinner here for my birthday and it was an amazing experience. Chef Eli was so nice and was a pleasure to talk to throughout our dinner. We enjoyed the setup of the experience. We booked 5:15pm and there was one other couple. So that was one chef per party which I think worked out well since we didn't feel rushed and they were pretty attentive. The omakase set was 18 course for $185 which we thought was fair, and we were stuffed at the end. It was about a 2 hour experience and everything was paced well. Everything was delicious. Some of my favorites were the toro and caviar, amaebi, uni, kohada, and toro hand roll. Chef gave me extra uni for my birthday which was so nice of him. He also shared that he actually made the pecan mochi cake for the menu which was a perfect end to dinner. Not too sweet and the textures worked nicely together. Sushi Ran rotates some of the offerings on the omakase menu every week. The firefly squid was a new addition for our day's tasting menu which was also new in general for us. The fish is consistently fresh and high quality, served at the ideal temperature (room temp or slightly chilled) so the flavors really come through. Nothing is served warm, which is exactly how it should be. Service is efficient and professional. Staff are knowledgeable, patient, and explain ingredients without overdoing it. Presentation is clean, refined, and clearly handled with care -- not flashy, but elegant. The restaurant itself has a calm, intimate atmosphere -- ideal for a quiet dinner or even a focused one-on-one conversation. There's indoor seating split into two sections, and a well-sized outdoor area as well. Bonus: they have a strong wine and sake list that's actually worth browsing. We came right at noon for their opening and were seated immediately. Parking around here can be hit or miss, but we found a spot on a nearby side street without too much trouble (always read the signs). The menu is extensive and leans traditional. That said, service was soooo slow and I'm pretty sure the waitress forgot about us even though we were sitting inside and not too far from the kitchen. She took our order and that was probably the last time we saw her despite asking another staff member to flag her down since we wanted to order more food. By the time she came, we finished all our orders already and just got the check instead. Food was ok. For a place so highly rated (and pricey), I expected more. The kaisen futo-maki had good quality and fresh fish but the shiso leaves were inconsistent throughout the roll with some pieces being completely overpowered by that flavor. I also had some a la carte nigiris. The uni nigiri was good but the standout for me was the anago nigiri, which was very plump and soft with good flavor. Reputed to be one of the best Japanese sushi restaurants in the US we decided to give it a go for dinner. The place has been around for over 30 years and I had eaten here some twenty years ago. It was so good I came twice within a couple days. It's grown considerably since then, with two sections of indoor seating and a good amount of outdoor seating too. Parking can be tough yet we found a spot easily in a side street, just be cautious of posted regulations. Having made a reservation a couple weeks ago we were immediately seated and I was surprised how crowded it was at just after 5pm on a Friday. Unfortunately, we were crammed into a small table, indoors, right on a main entry point into the place. It wasn't all that comfortable or pleasant, also being right up against a heater. We did have a somewhat close view of the sushi bar, which is always interesting. The menu is complex and extensive. In many ways you need to know Japanese cuisine and all its refinements and nuances. I started with the miso soup and my hetter half had the mixed green salad. The miso was quite good with a big chunk of tofu. It is quite hearties than the clear miso soups you typically get in mainstream Japanese restaurants. The salad was a definite standout. I tried some and the greens were super fresh and the dressing amazing, light with a touch of lemon. We ordered the Premium Sushi Platter and a Spicy Tuna Roll. The presentations were beautiful, brought on unique long platters. Each piece was carefully explained and overall the freshness and taste was quite good. I wouldn't say it was the best I ever had and doesn't compare to what you get from Nabu as a comparison. Yet, quite competent, keeping in mind that I am no where near an afficionado or expert of Japanese cuisine. The Spicy Tuna Roll was so good that we did order a second. To accompany my meal I had a 5oz glass of the house sake. It was absolutely smooth and refreshing, a good choice for the fish. The sake menu is beyond comprehension with the number of choices. Way out of my league. Service was competent and attentive, but somewhat stiff and not all that personable. It felt very formal. It was amazing to see the number of dishes and variety that came out of the kitchen. The price point is quite high, yet undoubtedly commensurate to the quality level. With tip it came to about $90. each, so over $180. total, more than I have had for as good as sushi meal in the recent past. It's certainly a popular place and I would return to be more adventurous. A Duel Between the Infinite and the Definite Although Omakase reservations at Sushi Ran are notoriously difficult to come by, we were lucky to nab one at the last minute on a Saturday evening. Nestled in the coastal town of Sausalito, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, this 40-year-old institution remains a quiet legend in the Bay Area dining scene. Seated at the counter, I was surprised to see that our sushi chef was Caucasian. "No offense," I said, aware that my curious gaze may have betrayed my skepticism. "You're only the second non-traditional sushi chef I've ever met." I offered that the first was Adam, the owner of Robin in San Francisco, whose Texas upbringing had lent a bold, modern edge to his omakase. It's rare to see non-Asian sushi chefs, perhaps because the path to mastery is so rigorous. I'd heard that in Japan, apprentices can spend years just washing rice before being allowed to handle fish. So I was intrigued and ultimately impressed to meet Elijah--our chef for the evening--who told us he's been making sushi for 21 years, including the past six at Sushi Ran. "This is the best sushi restaurant," offered our neighbor Mitch, visiting from Virginia Beach, as he and his wife settled in for the evening's omakase. As each piece was presented and savored, we found ourselves murmuring with delight at the freshness of the fish. Under Elijah's deft hands, the sushi was restrained in its seasoning--never too vinegary, never overwhelmed by sauce--allowing the pure flavor and texture of the seafood to shine. One exception was the bluefin tuna, which had been gently marinated in a two-year aged soy sauce. By the time it was served, the soy's sharp edges had mellowed, infusing the fatty tuna with deep, complex umami. A truly memorable bite. What stood out most that night was Elijah's knife work--both precise and graceful. At my request, he prepared an a la carte dish using the fatty belly layer of toro. With ease, he rotated the thick cut of tuna, exposing the layer of fat, then--knife parallel to the board--shaved off a thin, even slice with each stroke. No wasted movement, no hesitation. After dining here, I would have to say I agree with one of similar points from other reviews - that this place is definitely pricier than what the food is worth. For context I am visiting from the peninsula and am more used to the sushi south of the bridge. Don't get me wrong - the fish is fresh and very delicious! But for nearly twice the price for the same (if not better) quality than what you can get elsewhere I'm personally not as impressed. However, this can just be my ignorance to the pricing standards in this area since this is my first time visiting Sausalito. Maybe the prices here are just a lot higher, who knows.
