I have been to this restaurant before and I did not have any problems. I always go with my friend to eat and one time they added a "service fee" to my bill, it was hand written in there. I was confused on why they added it on there so I asked them, they responded with "can you pay/afford it?" I was taken back by that VERY BOLD statement. It's not fancy, but it's priced accoringly. Their location is pretty bad, in a strip mall behind the Walgreens, unseen from Lemay Ferry and with very little foot traffic. Walgreens customers probably won't even notice it. I'm sure we drove by dozens of times before we knew it was there, and we love good sushi. The ambience is pretty generic; booths, chairs, all in a row, dim lighting, clean and simple, but nothing impressive. They offer a $15.99 all you can eat deal for dinner, but we haven't seen the need to use it, since the two of us get all we want for a few dollars less. I think the lunch price is a couple of dollars less. The menu says they also have buffet, but there wasn't anything like that for dinner. One thing I thought was a little odd; there are no chairs at the sushi bar. We've tried several rolls, nigiri, salad and crab rangoon (for the little one - the only item she will eat here). It was all very good. None of the fish was fishy. The eel was particularly good. The basic rolls like Alaska, California Roll, Spicy Salmon, etc are all under $5. They are kind of small, but what do you want for that price? Service is attentive and friendly. Decent fresh sushi at a fair price? In South County? We're definitely fans. Please seek it out if you're a sushi fan and you live in the area - I'd like this place to be around for a while. I saw a few people getting carry-out, which I would definitely recommend. read more

Cautiously ordered take out after reading these reviews. Had NO idea this place was within 2 miles of my house. Regular at places like Kampai and Sub Zero and while this isn't in that class, the food at Sushi Sake was delicious, fresh and extremely affordable. I had the Shrimp Shumai (8 pieces for $3, not bad, generous portion), tempura veggies ($4, 6 pieces, tasted good), 3 basic rolls, all fresh and delicious and very cheaply priced ($3-4.50, 6 pieces) and one special roll. The spider (w/shrimp) was much bigger, very tasty and moderately priced at $8-9. This wasn't the best sushi I ever had, but it was fresh and tasted great. Dining room was a bit small, but nicely decorated. Looked very clean. Would recommend to anyone in South County that doesn't feel like making the trip to the CWE! read more

Uhhhhhh.... what just happened? I live close to this place. They opened earlier this month and I've been looking forward to finally giving them a try and I finally got some carry out tonight. I got a couple of their specialty rolls... the "Mexican roll" featuring deep fried shrimp and the "St. Louis roll" which has salmon and tuna among other things. Why are these called specialty rolls? First thing I noticed is how small and unimpressive looking both rolls were. Second, I noticed that Half of the Mexican roll was covered in shredded cheese, and half was not. The menu said nothing about cheese, and WTF is cheese doing on sushi??? I don't get it. The Mexican Roll is listed as having "chef's sauce", whatever that is, but my Mexican Roll did not have any sauce at all. Fail. Both rolls were quite average and I'm still wondering they're on the "specialty" portion of the menu. The prices are quite high for what you get... $11.95 for the Mexican Roll and $12.95 for the St. Louis Roll. Also this is the first sushi place I've ever been to where the rolls were cut so that the size of each piece is dramatically different. It just looks sloppy and seems as though the chef didn't really give a crap. The inside of the restaurant looks nice enough. I showed up around 9:30PM tonight, a Sunday, and no one was there. Not surprising since the place is new and after all, it is a Sunday night. I believe they're open until roughly 10PM every night, or something like that... They also have an "all you can eat" sushi offering. I think it is $15.99 but I don't remember all the specifics. Another side note, I noticed on their menu that an ingredient in one of their specialty rolls is "imitation crab". Other rolls are listed as having "crab".... so I'm not sure if just one roll has fake crab or what. Either way, why list it on the menu like that? Who is reading that and like "Oh SWEET! I love fake crab! Real crab is for idiot sticks!" They also have a specialty roll that has no rice. Is that not odd? I've never seen a riceless sushi roll before. I plan on going back again and trying a couple other rolls to be sure I didn't just happen to make bad menu decisions but... if this is the caliber of sushi that is to be expected from this place I won't be going back. Honestly, I've never seen rolls this lackluster listed as "specialty" and costing so much. As far as I can tell the sushi just isn't very good at Sushi Sake. I'm disappointed since I want this place to be awesome! I will report back again after a second visit. I need to figure out how to upload pictures to Yelp since I've never tried that before... My lover and I have been here about a dozen times at the time of this writing, and it's always been great. The sushi is very good, the prices are very reasonable, the staff is always very friendly, and the food comes out really quick. We often go before 6:30, so they've never been busy for us. This is one of the few sushi places we can go with big appetites, eat great sushi, leave completely full, and spend $26 total (including a good tip). Unbeatable! Try doing that at the Drunken Fish! I came to Sushi Sake with a open mind, from reading the reviews on here. I don't think the waitress was trained or knew what she was doing, she would bring one dish out at a time, and took at least five minutes to get our water. There was only 3 tables, it wasn't that busy. I got miso soup it was horrible, as if had been sitting for hours, i had to keep stirring it so it was mixed together. The salad dressing didn't really have a taste and was kinda grainy. And the "teriyaki chicken" hotplate i ordered was horrible. It came out on a sizzling plate with onions (some of the onions underneath were burnt) and 2 plain chicken breasts covered in some mystery sauce which had no taste, and had NO FLAVOR WHAT SO EVER! Good little place in the SoCo area. Beware of a lengthy wait on the weekends during prime dinner time. You shouldn't have a problem if you're looking for a late bite after 8:45pm. The price and the sushi itself are redeeming qualities for the wait. Once the place got staffed, our wait for food wasn't too bad. Surprisingly enough, the sweet potato roll was pretty tasty. You can see them make your rolls too! Some of our gyoza was cold, but edible. All in all, a pretty good deal (also we had a coupon from the money mailer). This review is strictly based on their service, since we never actually got to eat their food.... My fiance and I were in the area and decided to try something new. We went in on a Friday night around 8:30 PM, figuring most of the dinner rush would be over. The place seemed busy but there were at least 4 empty (but dirty) tables, so we didn't think we'd have to wait long. Two waitresses were at the front counter trying to ring out a group of 4 women. They were apparently having great difficulty with this task and even though they kept saying, "We'll be right with you," they never actually tried to help us. A busboy was running around like CRAZY and eventually cleared off a table for us. Luckily there were already used menus on the table for us to look at because no one came by with new ones, or to take our drink order. We selected several rolls and decided to order a large sake but we STILL had yet to see a waitress at our table. The two girls at the front finally figured out how to use a cash register and were now arguing over who was going to take our table, along with the 2 other tables that came in behind us. (Super classy ladies, super classy.) One waitress finally came up and took our drink order. While we had her attention we gave her our sushi order sheet. She just assumed we were ordering the all you can eat platters and we had to correct her. That was really frustrating. But not nearly as frustrating as seeing her walk right past the order computer and fail to put in our food or sake! Then she walked across the dining room and proceeded to clear off two tables instead! Not only did she fail to put in our order, but she didn't even ATTEMPT to get us the waters we had ordered. A few minutes later, we were REALLY confused when the second waitress came over to "greet" us to take our drink orders. Frustrated we told her the OTHER waitress had already done that, yet she hadn't been back. She rolled her eyes at us, gave some attitude, and said, "OK fine, I'll figure it out!" At that point, we were done (and we told her as much.) My fiance and I just got up and left, I simply could not take the ignorance and incompetence of their wait staff any longer. I'm sure their sushi is good, their chefs looked like they were busting out some serious rolls back there! Unfortunately I will never try it because I don't dare try to go there again. If I'm going for mediocre sushi in south county, I'll just go to Shogun up the street. read more

We were even more excited after we ate there and found out they have really good sushi (especially for the price). The generic rolls are about $4-6 each. We have had sushi from here maybe 10 times since they've opened and its been really good each time. We get take out from here a lot and there has never been an issue. This place is new and I actually enjoyed it. If you are looking for super high end sushi where you pay $15 plus per roll, this is not the place. They have a WIDE variety of rolls and a GREAT all you can eat sushi menu for lunch and dinner. Dinner all you can eat is about $17 and Lunch is around $11. They are new and still adding amenities in the place so do not be surprised if it seems a little quite in the place. Also, remember where it is at. It is not downtown or in Clayton. I live within walking distance so i visit often, it can be very hit and miss depending on the time of day and who is working. Sometimes you will get prime service even at the height of the dinner rush and other times you will be waiting for your server even with only a few other people eating there as well. The food is the same way depending on when you go. Some of the items taste great and others lack flavor or portion. The price is reasonable if you just want a nice clean place to eat. i wouldn't recommend taking a date here for the first time at dinner but for a night out of the house or lunch it works .They have better pricing at lunch. read more

The food is ok. It's the customer service. Everytime I order online to pick up, they're always super rude about it - like they're being inconvenienced to help me. This last time I went, I tipped ahead online. I get to the store, pay, and get handed a receipt to sign. I asked if my tip had been included already or not because their receipts say "Pre-Tip Total - Tip - Total". She said no. My tip was not included in the total. But I was pretty sure I had already tipped. So I asked again, and this time she points to the spot that says "Tip" indicating for me to add a tip. At that point, I pulled out the other receipt she had handed me & it clearly showed that I had already tipped. I showed it to her & she played it off , told me to sign it, and I left. read more

They are addicting. They have a broth that comes with them that just makes it. -Shumai is another favorite.. crispy shrimp puffs.. yum. -Sashimi is consistently good, it is not the top of the line but it is definitely good. Few would believe that a great Sushi restaurant could reside squarely in the heart of South County. This is an asset because the sushi at Sushi Sake is top notch without all the snobby hipsters who can populate other more trendy and EXPENSIVE sushi joints in the city. It's nearby South County Mall, but NOT in the mall so parking is easy. Look for the Walgreens at one end of Lemay Ferry and turn in there. They have EVERY kind of Sushi you might like, including my favorite, eel. Also if you don't like the seaweed wrapping they will wrap your rolls in soy paper for a slight extra charge. Few Sushi places will do this. Service is SOCO down home and friendly. They also do carry-out and their soups are superb if you want something other than Sushi. And yes they have all the usual chicken and teriyaki dishes for your friends from Jeffco who think Sushi are sea demons. read more

Sushi Sake down the blocky. I live in South County (or SoCo as us cool kids call it) and have had to travel great distances for good sushi. Sure, Sunset Hills has a sushi place, but when you're from St. Louis, Mehlville to Sunset Hills is a great distance. A few other places toss some basic sushi on a hibachi menu. Whatever. Not impressed. Finally - not long after we got electricity and Internet, the residents of the eastern edge of SoCo now get SUSHI! It was fantastic - some really interesting rolls (I had the Christmas Roll) and some great standards. The miso was yummy, the edamame was perfect. The cost was decent and they're doing Groupons, people. GROUPONS. They have an all-you-can-eat option but the current Groupons can't be used for that. Sushi in South County. I am not one to write reviews, if I have a bad experience I usually just don't go back to the place, but fair warning if you have plans after your meal you probably want to skip this spot, the food was decent but you'll definitely wait we got there around 7-7:15 and didn't get our food until 8:45 and had to eat quickly to pay and make it out of there to make it to our movie when we asked if our food was coming after 40 minuets we were told there was one table in front of us that they were making the sushi for and then we would be next. Fast forward to seeing 2 other tables that came in after us getting their food. I asked again if our food was almost ready because I was ready to cancel our food and pay for my drink and appetizer, but then our food was actually ready, they told my boyfriend they serve the smaller orders first. I think I saw more take out food that people ordered go out then food in the restaurant. If we ordered take out we may have gotten our food faster! I do think this place is trying and they were nice and we did our best to be kind despite our frustrations, so if you go don't have plans post dinner! To add we spent almost $50 for three gyoza and 3 rolls each because we couldn't take advantage of the "all you can eat" very disappointing to try to have a nice evening to celebrate a loved ones birthday and not actually get a good meal. read more

What an awful experience! Just ate there, sushi and rolls were mixed from each persons order, one plate had items we did not order and missing items we did order. This was our fourth visit there in as many weeks. The last 3 dinners were great, this time all messed up, then they came out of the prep area to explain sometimes customer gets it wrong, sometimes they get it wrong. Couldn't eat 1/2 of the rolls they mistakenly served due to dietary restrictions, then they charged for the full bill of what was actually ordered. We will never go back, too many great Sushi restaurants to go to a place like this one. read more
