I can very picky about omakase, but to be honest I couldn't find anything wrong here! Sushi Tama is a small sushi restaurant toward the Beverly Hills area. They have a tiny patio, some small tables, and a sushi bar. Everything is decorated in a modern style. You can order à la carte or opt for the $100 table omakase or the full omakase experience at the sushi bar for $180. We did the $180 and I loved it. I think if you do the table omakase all the nigiri will be made at the bar and brought to you at once, but at the bar each piece will be presented to you as it's made. I thought each piece of nigiri and small dish was well balanced and presented well, and all the fish tasted fresh. I particularly loved the uni chawanmushi and monkfish liver. The chefs here are quite interactive, they will bring out the fish for you to take pictures, chat with you, and you can buy them a beer or share your sake with them out of respect if you'd like. Service was also impeccable, with dishes being cleared as soon as I finished and my sake cup and water being refilled constantly. Not a great experience overall. We were inexplicably made to wait outside on a cold night, even though we had reservations for omakase at the sushi bar and the bar was completely empty. Meanwhile, other guests were seated inside at tables. There was no clear reason for the delay. When we were finally seated, we were placed in the worst seats at the counter, the corner, despite being the only people at the sushi bar for our entire seating. Since omakase reservations are only at 6pm and 8pm, there was no apparent reason we couldn't have been seated more centrally. The head chef/owner never acknowledged or greeted us, despite not serving anyone at the counter the entire time we were there. That set a pretty cold tone for the evening. Our chef seemed pleasant enough, but I could barely hear or understand anything he said due to his very low, mumbled voice, which took away from what's supposed to be an interactive experience. The courses were served rapid-fire, and if we hesitated even 10 seconds before eating, we were scolded that the sushi had to be eaten immediately. Our 18-course omakase was finished in about 50 minutes, which felt rushed and impersonal. As for the food itself, the quality was only fair. The counter omakase experience was worth every penny! Each piece was carefully put together by our sushi chef and explained to us. I had a hard time remembering each specific name, but I can tell you that the taste for each item was incredible! So fresh and just melts in your mouth! There were a couple of creative items that were unique to the chef, and the dessert was also so delicious! I cannot tell you my favorite, but the handroll, the dessert, and a pate item was definitely up there for me! The ambiance is perfect for a special celebration with a small party, though I think you can have a large party if you reserve in advance? (Don't quote me on that.) Came here on a weeknight. The restaurant has a minimalist, modern vibe that's comfortable and not overly fancy. The restaurant wasn't too busy so we were seated right away. Instead of going with the omakase we decided to order a mix of items to try a bit of everything. We started with the aburi toro which was really good, fatty and delicious with the yuzu kosho cutting through. The hotate isobe style, torched scallops wrapped in seaweed, was another highlight of the night. For nigiri we tried hirame, aji, nodoguro, salmon, kohada, scallop, and akami. Everything was good, though the nodoguro stood out as the favorite for its flavor and torching. We also got the sanshoku don which came with about seven pieces of sashimi on top. The fish was a little thin and the amount of rice was a lot, even for someone who can eat. The ratio felt off and I found myself eating big spoonfuls of rice just to make a dent. Overall it's a nice spot for a date with decent sushi, but I wasn't blown away considering the price point. When pieces are $10+ each, I expect a bit more than what we got. Glad I tried it and I'd come back again, but not in a rush. read more

Finally!! After 5 long years coming here for lunch. I finally got to try Chef Yoshimoto omakase for my birthday and it didn't disappoint one bit. Chef Omakase 18 course including miso soup and dessert. The price is very reasonable, especially in this area. All the fish that was served were all fresh. Nothing that I haven't tried before but that didn't bother me at all. Every cut was delicious and well executed. Chef shari ( sushi rice ) was fantastic and perfectly season. Here were some of the highlights from the omakase. Seared Kamasu ( Barracuda) Sashimi Snow Crab Chawanmushi Kinki Nigiri Kohada Nigiri Otoro Nigiri Anago Nigiri As always service was outstanding and professional. Your typical minimalist omakase vibes with good quality sushi. Went on a weekend for dinner - would be wise to book reservations as it seemed to get pretty crowded. Parking is a bit annoying - there's a small amount of street parking, but likely you will need to park in the underground garage (and I don't recall them validating). Was sat immediately - was curious about the omakase for the day but did ask what sort of fish would be included and the restaurant wouldn't specify - so we opted to order à la carte instead. Ordered various typical nigiri sushi, a few seasonal pieces, as well as a crab handroll. The fish quality was good - I did enjoy the crab handroll and toro pieces quite a bit. The uni was ok - not as rich as I'd hope - but could be the season (the visit was in September). Reason for the rating: We asked a few times for water, to order additional food, and the check - so that dampened the vibe - the servers acknowledged us each time, but seems they were rushed to do some other things and forget about us. Additionally, it is a bit pricey for what we got - the quality was good, but think there's a "Beverly Hills tax" applied. I wouldn't recommend to go out of your way to visit - but if you are around the area and want good sushi, this isn't a bad spot. read more

I popped into here for lunch and was immediately impressed by the warm welcome--the staff here is truly exceptional. I started with my usual favorite, the A5 Wagyu sashimi. It was absolutely sublime, melting on the tongue with that signature rich, buttery finish. A perfect 5/5 start, as always. Next, I had nigiri though I'm ngl, I was expecting more sashimi. I ordered two pieces of hamachi (yellowtail), the least fatty tuna, and the medium fatty tuna (I avoid the full toro). I also had the salmon nigiri. The fish was undeniably fresh and tasty, but honestly, I spent the whole time chasing that 'wow' factor I find at one specific spot I hold dear. It didn't quite hit that unforgettable, transcendent high for me. That being said, the overall experience was fantastic. The service was attentive, the atmosphere was excellent, and the quality of the fish was still very high. This is a great spot for a refined lunch, and that A5 Wagyu alone is worth the trip. While on vacation, my husband and I craved sushi. Do he went and did his thing, found this gem and off to lunch we go! We arrived early and the hostess had us wait til opening time (ABSOLUTELY FAIR) and essentially stated if she let us in, the chefs would be like (waiiiii XD) Anyway, we came during lunch hours and I ordered a salmon bowl while my husband ordered chirashi. It came pretty quick but I know we were the only two there for a bit. We also had some sides of sushi which included nodoguro. If you've never had nodoguro, it is time for you to try. It was SO yummy. Overall, I loved my experience here. The vibes were pretty chill and I'm grateful there is no dress code either. Located across The Henry on Robertson, this intimate sushi spot was the perfect destination for our bookclub dinner night. We ordered everything our server recommended and by the end were so full! Food, ambiance and customer service was 5/5. Special shoutout to our server Naoko who not only went above and beyond with recommendations but great mannerisms when our table time limit was coming up and she even helped our friend with the baby stroller down the steps. My friends even got to choose their own sake glasses out of a box with different options. Service was very hands on as there were a lot of dishes to take away and sauces to bring. One thing that I did not appreciate is they didn't even ask still or sparkling water (trick question because answer is tap), but just started pouring Acqua Panna, which led to being charged an extra $18 for water. The ambiance/decor is sleek and minimalist made up of lots of wood and natural tones. Decor is non-existent. There is some outdoor dining available as well as indoor with tables and a sushi counter. The service was excellent on my first/recent visit a couple weeks ago and everyone was on top of things. Staff was very professional but friendly. The price point definitely matched the quality but it can be a bit pricey. We ordered quite a few things and everything was enjoyed by all. Somethings ordered but not limited to: Aburi Toro - Wow! This was so great. It's fatty tuna belly that's been partially grilled/seared using the aburi technique, so you get a nice cooked tuna with a raw inside. Edamame - Nicely cooked and a good portion to share. Custom nigiri plate - A custom plate with 10 pieces (chutoro, hirame, kinme, nodoguro, hamachi, sawara, katsuo, shima aji, sake, o-toro) was created and wow it was all so fresh and it all melted in my mouth. What an amazing 18 course tasting menu prepared by chef Yoshi! My fiance and I went here for Friday night date night while visiting LA. We are looking forward to this Sushi tasting all week! And it outweighed my expectations! I loved the featured Shamu Shabu which was wagyu Style beef. Some of my favorite sushi rolls or the medium fatty tuna, shrimp, and uni! I loved the large chunks of fresh ginger per pallet cleanser between each bite. I always love watching Fresh Wasabi be made in front of me too, I feel like it's such a beautiful delicacy and just tastes so much better when you see your food prepared in front of you. Ok, this place is very solid. Been multiple times and from a sushi snob, this is real old Tokyo style sushi. Food quality is always superb, very fresh and food is always properly handled. When I sat down the waitress put the table cloth on my lap, opened the hand sanitizer wrap and told me to clean my hands for the sushi. Then I used the bathroom and guess what, they have a bidet toilet!!! Even the toilet seat was warm! Now on to the food, the main reason why I came here is bc this place has fresh real wasabi root that turns into the wasabi. They grind the root into the green wasabi. I ordered the Toro aka fatty tuna, jumbo scallops, and oysters. The appetizers of oysters were 4 at $16. And wow they tasted so amazingly good. The Toro tuna melted in my mouth! It was so freaking fresh, it's out of this world. This tuna you could cut it with a spoon it's that soft. Next was the jumbo scallops. They tasted like a melted goodness something. I am glad that I ordered two of them! The last item I tried was uni. I've ordered that before at different restaurants but I could never swallow them, BUT this place was totally different.... Super sad that I made the mistake and didn't book the Omakase! If you do, make sure you select the 6 or 8 pm and make sure it's Omakase and not just Sushi Counter. I didn't realize that ahead of time and missed it since my search was for 7 pm and assumed that you could get Omakase as long as you were at the counter. Anyways, this is an elegant and minimalistic place that showcases some of the best of Japanese cuisine. We just ended ordering some items from the menu and it was good, but we weren't too knowledgeable to really optimize it. Really enjoyed the Big Salmon Roll and Oysters.
