As a Japanese person, I'm extremely picky when it comes to sushi, so I was genuinely thrilled to finally find an authentic Japanese sushi restaurant in Danville. Not only that -- this is honestly one of the best sushi restaurants I've had in the U.S. We went on a Saturday night, and several people tried to walk in, but the restaurant was fully booked. I highly recommend making a reservation in advance. The chef and staff were incredibly friendly, professional, and polite, which made the experience even better. Compared to omakase restaurants in San Francisco that can easily cost $250+ per person, this place is much more reasonable, though you should still expect to spend around $120 per person. The pricing is similar to Maruyama in San Mateo, but with a much better ambiance and service. I loved the experience so much that I already made another reservation for next month. Dining here truly felt like being back home in Tokyo. I honestly believe this place has Michelin-star potential in the future. You should definitely visit before it becomes too popular. read more

Beautifully crafted nigiri at Sushi Tamahime! Taka was a wonderful host, and Hide is a masterful sushi chef. The restaurant is intimate, with only 8 seats at the counter and 8 seats at a table, the dining experience was perfect for two people. My husband and I each had our own "Kaga" set menu and a glass of sake to enjoy throughout the meal. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the hints of salt, yuzu, or chopped fresh wasabi made each piece pop with flavor. A welcome addition to the Danville area for anyone who loves omakase. read more

What an amazing addition to the Japanese scene here in Danville! This is high enough quality I don't need to drive to San Mateo to get my high end sushi fix. I had a lovely time chatting with chef and Kojima-san. The food was amazing. Chef ships his fish from Japan regularly. The food is prepared to order with care. Sake list is fantastic! They also stock wine from V Sattui which I love. While the price point is a bit higher than a normal sushi meal, it's totally worth it. Highly recommend visiting Sushi Tamahime for a special occasion! (Or just a Thursday night after working 12+ hours at work) I don't have pictures because everything looked so good that I put my camera away to be in the moment! A new Japanese restaurant has opened up in the former Sushi Bar Hana location. What makes them unique is that they have a well established sushi restaurant chain within Japan called Maimon/Tamahime. The sushi chef calls back to roots in Kanazawa, and showcases this by offering a very special fish called nodoguro, also known as akamutsu, rosy sea-bass, or blackthroat seaperch. There's also a decent number of lesser known kanazawan things like snow crab, or even gold flake. Kanazawa produces most of japans gold flake, so it's not just a fancy little piece of fish, but an authentically kanazawan touch. I came in on their third night of opening, pretty easy to either reserve or walk-in so far, with about 10 seats each at the bar and tables. In terms of quality of nigiri, there's some good and some bad. The fish quality is generally good. Chutoro and snow crab were the standouts. Nodoguro is always a favorite. The shrimp was very sweet and tasty. The use of yuzu(?) as a topping was really a nice touch. The downside, very heavy handed on the rice, tempurate of the rice is on the colder side, as the temperature is not well regulated by the rice container -- only a few pieces came out at the correct temperature at the counter seats. Rice has a very light flavor, not much sushi vinegar or seasoning. Nikiri is also light, not too punchy, not too salty, not very sweet. Wasabi was also very heavy, a bit too much for my taste on most pieces. I'd really love to see a premium only omakase option, with less salmon and cream-cheese based rolls. Overall, I'm impressed, and am excited to see them grow. Yuzu soda 4.2/5 - tiny bits of yuzu floating around. Probably a yuzu marmalade mixed with soda water. Edamame 4/5 - tiny bit of char gives good flavor. Ikura 3/5 - a bit gel-like, not much of a pop. Otoro 4.5/5 - very tender and oily. Otoro aburi 4.6/5 - very tender, the kiss of heat brings out more of the oils, gives satisfying contrast of temperatures. Chutoro 4.5/5 - very tender and oily. Always a favorite. Not too different from Otoro, this is usually going to be my pick. Grilled hamachi 4.2/5 - goes well with the other bluefins. Similar to akami in texture, buttery. Ika 3/5 - Not a fan of ika. Also a big truffle oil disliker. This one was alright, as it was cut to be easier to chew. Kind of like a squid noodle. Tamagoyaki 3.7/5 - dense. Good dashi flavor, good soy flavor, but too dense. Unagi 4/5 - unagi sauce tasted store-bought, but the unagi itself was good. It wasn't too mushy like most other places. Kanigankomori 3.9/5 - lots of potential. Taste overwhelmed by mayonnaise though. Top it with citrus and soy sauce instead, and you've got a winner. Nodoguro 4.8/5 - always has been, always will be my favorite fish. It's great having the skin kissed with a little bit of heat on the skin surface to bring out the fishes natural oils. Amaebi 4.7/5 - also very sweet and tender. The size really helps make the texture appealing. Zuwaigani 4.8/5 - also very sweet, I love how it's just a piece of crab totally intact. Uni 4.79/5 - sweet and briny. Not too fishy. Not bad. I visited Sushi Tamahime for the first time today and had such a wonderful, memorable experience. We sat at the counter, so had a front row seat to our sushi chef's delicate and artistic preparation of our sushi. ALL of it was delicious. The fish is so fresh and the care that was taken with each piece of sushi came through with every bite (I need to get some of that yuzu salt!). As someone who's been a little disappointed with the sushi offerings in the Tri-Valley, I've been relieved to find this spot opened up in Downtown Danville. This is traditional sushi at its best. You won't find any ridiculously named rolls or fusion style items with heaps of sauce. Instead you get nigiri done the right way. The ika (squid) was some of the best I've had, and the hotate (scallop) was top notch. This is the restaurant that took over the space that Sushi Bar Hana was located... what a find! This isn't your one stop for everything Japanese food type of place. You're not going to find 8 types of combos and bento boxes, 48 types of "special" rolls and 18 appetizers. They do sushi (and some appetizers) and they do it well. This was our first visit an dnot being overly hungry we ordered two nigir sets, a roll and 2 appetizers. The tamago was really, really good. I know for most this isn't a big deal? But having something so simple be that good just let's you know everything else will be of teh same caliber. This freshness of the fish itself is enough to let you know they know that they are doing the customer right. Each piece was fresh, tender and perfectly seasoned. We didn't need extra shoyu or wasabi. A nice touch was a small plate of tsukemono to go with our nigiri. The space is small so walk-ins like us probably might have to wait or get turned away if busy. The menu is small and focused and it may seem pricey. But they are worth every penny. Save 'em for a special meal. We'll be more adventurous the next tie we go. But if you want a great sushi experience, make a reservation and try tem out. read more

I visited Sushi Tamahime on a Friday evening impromptu during 4th of July weekend. Background: I have lived in Japan and the US and was walking by the restaurant, and was immediately reminded of Omakase restaurants in Japan just by the layout. I decided to walk in and sit at the bar and ordered Hamachi, Otoro, Rockfish, Scallop, and Uni Nigiri - along with DaiGinjo Sake and mochi for dessert. The nigiri was so fresh and served piece by piece exactly like restaurants in Japan. The sushi chef was extremely attentive and perfected each piece, and the waitstaff were polite, kind, and did not miss a beat. If you want to experience real Japanese cuisine, this place is perfect. I am glad that they have brought their art to the Bay Area. There is NO other sushi restaurant as authentic as this in the east bay - to my knowledge.
