Another spot, Sushi OK, closed its doors, which leaves primarily AYCE places, with their varied levels of mediocrity. I'm surprised it took so long to try this almost 3-years-old restaurant, but I'm glad we did. Plus, they're open later than most other spots. Being near the UCR campus and student housing certainly keeps the place going. We marked several late tables in the last hour of operation, as well as a brisk to-go stream. A little short staffed in front, one of the sushi chefs took our order because the server was tied up at the register. His name was Paul, too, so that was cool! Our food came out quickly enough, and not all at once, so it was relaxing. We really enjoyed the apparent quality of the fish, and presentations were very good as well. The backed Mussels are wonderful, and we would definitely order two more in the future. While I didn't get any sashimi or nigiri sushi this visit, I'll be interested in branching out from the excellent rolls. California roll wasn't the best I've ever had, and the tuna felt a bit broken down, not with as much of a kick as I expected. The caterpillar roll came with generous avocado slices, and was contrasted nicely with the teriyaki sauce that was well balanced atop the roll. The salmon skin roll was one of the best I've ever had, highly recommend getting those two rolls. The fish a little less than room temperature, similar to the feel of the restaurant. All this was accompanied by a refreshing palate cleanser of a mango smoothie. The music is a great level, the environment feels great, and the comfort level is pretty nice. If you've got an hour or two to kill, definitely hit this place. Something tells me there's more to this than it looks. read more
