We dined here tonight for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised, as I wasn't expecting much. I am a Japanese and in fact, I admit that I am a sushi snob :-) First off, their fish is extremely fresh. Also they don't skimp on the serving. Order a nigiri, and you won't see the rice under the huge slice of fish. Tokyo style! Although to me, it was a bit extreme. The rice should be a little bigger, especially for rolls. The quality of rice is excellent too, so I wanted a little more to savor. Even the wasabi was good -- not those cheap, bright green fakey stuff. Overall a bit expensive, but the quality of the fish may justify it. A sushi restaurant run by non-Japanese... well done. Quite impressive! read more

I am torn on writing this review. Two months ago came here with some friends and food was wonderful. Super fresh and tasty fish, excellent seaweed salad, wonderful desserts, a nice selection of sake. Last night it was almost like a different restaurant. Servings of the sashimi in the Boat were still large. But all of the fish tasted the same--almost as if it had been refrigerated for over a week--and the crab tasted a bit fishy. Servers rushed us as soon as we sat down and never came back to see if we wanted to order dessert or anything else. Giving a rating of 4 as it previously would have been a 5 while yesterday was barely a 3, despite having spent over $90 for two people. I hope that management sees they have an opportunity and clientele that are willing to return and spend money. But some improvements are now needed. read more

Last minute late dinner with the family and it was very nice that they accommodated our large party one hour before closing. Place is small and tables close together so not a place to go to if you are wanting a quiet intimate dinner. Another Japanese restaurant owned by Chinese people. (I'm Chinese, so I'm allowed to say this. LOL.) Sorry, but this is a pet peeve mine. I don't know about you, but I like to go to Japanese-owned Japanese restaurants. More authentic and better customer service. Anyway, whatever you do, DO NOT order the "Chicken" Karaage. The menu described it as "crispy fried chicken", which is essentially what chicken karaage is supposed to be. However, what we got was over-fried dry and chewy frozen "chicken" squares. At first I thought they got our order mixed up and brought us fried tofu (which isn't even on the menu) because that's what it looked like. But, nope, the waiter confirmed it was chicken. It tasted horrible. Yuck! Even McDonald's Chicken McNuggets would have tasted better. To make things worse, when the waiter came to remove the plate, which was barely eaten (I only ate three pieces), he didn't even say anything. Most waiters would have said something like, "Oh, was there something wrong with the chicken?" At which point, we could tell him why we didn't eat it. But, nope, he said nothing. But before he walked off, we told him how dried and chewy they were, and all he said was, "Uh, okay." Then he mumbled something about telling the cook, which I doubt he did. Anyway, no apologies. Nothing. Poor customer service IMO. The edamame was good. The sashimi was good. The hand roll was not so good, as it was sitting around too long before I got it, because the nori was soggy which made the hand roll limp when I picked it up. Let's just put it this way... This restaurant would NOT survive if it were located in SF, Oakland, Berkeley, and the like, where the standards are higher. read more

A nice little gem in Marin. For vegetarians they have some excellent options. They make good sweet potato rolls and walnut "prawn" rolls. So you can get quite a nice variety of rolls. Along with the usual suspects like udon noodles or such, vegan/veg people have numerous options here. There is also outdoor seating, covered outdoor seating and nice indoor seating. They have a solid collection of drinks too. Of course they put the same solid effort into non veg stuff as evidenced by the crowds and other good reviews. Pro tip: (I think this term is annoying but hey I used it): if you're having a kids bday party and have gotten the usual treats for kids, get one of their roll platters for the adults. We went opening day, which of course presents challenges for any restaurant. On this occasion I opted for the ramen, since Novato hasn't really had ramen other than cup-a-soup. Yes, I've had that too. So, first there was a bit of a wait for service, which was TOTALLY expected on day one. However, it was worth waiting for. The ramen broth was Okinawa-style, which I wasn't expecting but was very happy with. I'm not sure if they make the noodles there, but they were just right, as was the jicama, veggies, pork etc that one would expect in an authentic ramen. Although we will miss the former Garden restaurant that served fine Mediterranean food here for ages, this is a fabulous addition to the local scene. The lamb chops served at the next table were mouth watering, and the mixed tempura appetizer Mom ordered was hot, crispy, fresh and just nine bucks. One thing I will mention as a negative - and I took a star away for this - the miso soup was TEPID. This also seems to be a theme in other reviews. Please guys, get this right. Miso soup has to be hot. Period. HOT.... temperature hot that is. We do love Taki, eat there often, nice to know that now we have another option here in south Novato - one that IS open on Monday! Came here on Valentine's day and it was a little busy but the wait wasnt too long. That being said, the service was poor (Kept us waiting long and often for the check, to go boxes, etc.) The food is not the greatest. The Gyoza was really, really good, but the sushi itself was really subpar. We got a Fried Dynamite, dragon, giant, and spider roll. The first three were mediocre, and the latter was really, really dry. I had it sent back thinking it was just a fluke, but it came back and was equally as dry. It seemed almost like it was left out for a long time. We ended up boxing up 75% of the sushi we got and just leaving. There are a good amount of decent to amazing sushi places not too far from this place that are very similar in price, so I recommend taking the drive anywhere else. I'm tempted to return and see if they were just having an offday, or if the food was made as normal. If I find anything different I'll rewrite my review. read more

It's Friday and I decided to give Sushi Tri a try today. Let's just say......meh. It was okay. This review is based on my takeout experience of the food and has nothing to do with service or ambiance (I'm sure both of those are fine). I ordered the lunch bento box with spicy tuna roll and mixed tempura. I also ordered the lion king roll on the side. Here's a quick rundown: I should have known better than to get tempura togo, but in my defense most other places I get it from poke holes in the lid so the steam can escape and it keeps the tempura crunchy! Mine was a soggy pile. Spicy tuna roll was bland, not terrible, but not good enough to give good reviews of either. Lion King roll is something I normally enjoy because when I see baked roll, I think roll sitting in warm gooey baked sauce with slightly caramelized edges. This roll was not even close. It was cold, sauce was non existent and the top salmon looked more like it was torched slightly to emulate a baked look. It was HORRIBLE! Sorry to yell, but it was truly not up to par. So I give 3 stars to this place in hopes they pick up their game and I sadly I don't think I will be giving this place another try. read more

Wow! What a nice experience we had at this restaurant right off 101 near Ignacio. It was one of those mild summer evenings and we sat out on the rear patio next to the Japanese garden. We both had bento boxes ($18) and warm sake. Our dinner began with delicious miso soup and traditional salad serve on interesting dinnerware. Then came our boxes with perfectly cooked shrimp and vegetable tempura and grill salmon for one and chicken teriyaki for me. Our servings were generous and we took home enough teriyaki for sandwiches at lunch today. Fine service and atmosphere, delicious food on a perfect evening we returned home full and content looking forward to returning in the near future. read more

I guess this place is highly rated in relation to other sushi places in the area, but being used to the quality of sushi in Berkeley and SF, we were disappointed. Most of the food was less than flavorful (most of the flavor being provided by accompanying sauces), the rice was dry, the sashimi was low quality (we didn't even eat all of our tuna because it actually tasted bad), and the miso soup was just weird. Meh. I wasn't a huge fan of the food here. I got a lunch bento and sake sashimi. The chicken teriyaki was more curry based tasting, the California roll left much to be desired but the sashimi was a decent portion but not necessarily something I'd pay $11 bucks in addition to my already relatively expensive meal. Filled up after we were seated but they have a nice waiting area w sofas (and clean baño) -1 ordered tea and the cup came out w seaweed on it lmao but they switched it out for us after we brought it to their attention! +1 the yellow tail sashimi WOW. 4 thick cut pieces when I was expecting half the size like other restaurants but man these guys don't hold back; and the quality was *on point* melts in your mouth yum definitely worth the price +0.5 the 4 seasons roll came out on a massive plate for presentation of their (a bit sweet for me) sauce art, but the fish was fresh AF +1 the bento box (grilled salmon and tempura) came w 2 good sized pieces of salmon and a good selection of tempura (You know they ain't holding back when they have not just green bean tempura but ASPARAGUS!!) +/- bill came out to be ~60 but so worth for quality of food read more
