I came into Sushi Tsunami on a whim - I wanted sushi, I wanted it to be a sushi boat place (or conveyer belt, as it happened to be), I didn't want it to be Sushiland in east Vancouver (never again!), and I didn't want to drive into Portland to get it. Sushi Tsunami fit the bill. We came in with only an hour to close, so I adjusted my expectations to reflect the late arrival. With the exception of some very dry-looking teriyaki skewers, everything in rotation looked fresh and delicious. My lacto-ovo-intolerant husband generally has a hard time finding rolls he can eat, and was pleased to discover several different rolls without either allergen. I ate the most delicious jalapeno tempura-battered thingies stuffed with crab meat, only to find out after the fact that they're supposed to also be stuffed with cream cheese. As I don't consume dairy, I usually find it pretty easy to spot in flavours, and was shocked it had managed to get past me. Luckily, the chef must have forgotten the cream cheese, because I had no problems later on. Service was distracted and didn't really check in with us, nor did the chefs go out of their way to acknowledge customers, though they did quickly and pleasantly respond when deliberately flagged down for special orders. At the end, there was a crowd of people standing around waiting for their bills, as none of the several waitresses bothered to check in with anyone or count their plates. Still, showing up during the closing process is never the best way to get A+ service, so I'll give them 3 stars and commit to going back in the future - preferably a ways before closing! read more

Try the jalapeno, it is delicious! My personal favorite sushi restaurant in all of Vancouver. The chefs will make you anything you want off of the menu or you can just pick dishes off of the sushi train, which is filled with yummy sushis for people who love, fish, crab or veggies. My fave dishes are the mushroom bomb, jalapeno and volcano roll...but their soups are also great for if your feeling peckish and weak. Try the udon soup. I tend to go here once every couple of weeks, which is less then I went in the past because I was getting too pudgy from how often I would eat out here. So, I usually eat at oishi sushi but they were closed and I wanted sushi. I called and ordered two California rolls. To say I was let down and a little upset would be an understatement. The rolls were tiny and fell apart while I was eating them. The rice was super mushy and felt like play dough in my hands. The food here is actually pretty good. The first time i went during the summer it was amazing. However during my second visit this fall, it fell short. We stayed for an hour and there was almost no variety. One of the ladies working there was very rude. And the place seemed like it just went downhill. Great Sushi-go-round. The quality of the food is a notch above the other sushi tracks in Vancouver. They don't run those stupid sales where everything is too cheap so you have wait twenty minutes for something good to come around. My son and I like this place a lot. One of the better sushi places around here...we come often. And it is pretty inexpensive for sushi.

Been here five times. Prices are high. Only 3 peases per plate. Food not that greate. I rather go to a higher restaurant would of pay same price for a better quality. I don't recome this place. read more

My favorite sushi in vancouver. It is unfortunate that the portion sizes got smaller, but to me, quality over quantity when it comes to sushi. You pay more here, but it's good, good service, and very friendly. They do have plenty of inexpensive options as well. The jalapeño boats dipped in a side of siracha are melt-in-your-mouth good. Servers are great, not too pushy or talkative, but eager to assist when called. Kid friendly as well. read more

This is a pretty good go-to sushi place in hazel dell. It's not super fancy, but for conveyer belt sushi it's actually pretty good and prices are comparable. Always fresh and chilled, I've been to conveyer places where the sushi is warm and it always makes me nervous! I docked a star because it seems like whenever we go the belt is pretty depleted, limited options. BUT the staff is super friendly and willing to make you anything you ask for. read more

I was trying to find a decent sushi establishment in Vancouver. Sushi Tsunami was a huge disappointment to me. I consider myself a sushi connoisseur and have eaten sushi throughout the west coast, including Vancouver, BC. There was no low sodium soy sauce available on any of the counter tops. They looked like they were being held hostage behind a server station! Unless you specifically asked, I don't believe anyone would have offered one to you. The ginger was dry and unappetizing. This was just the condiments. The salmon nigiri portions were pathetic. I could literally see the rice on the other side of the fish piece (it was horribly translucent). I think if I wanted such a small portion of salmon per serving, one would opt not to eat salmon at all and select another roll. The rest of the items were very ordinary and lacked any sort of innovation or freshness for that matter. I would definitely not recommend this place for anyone unless you absolutely have no taste buds and enjoy wasting money. read more

We have only been here once, but after talking to friends, we heard the same issues that we had when there. This place STINKS! It doesn't smell like fish, it smells dirty like it needs to be cleaned. It grossed me out. I have eaten at many conveyor belt type sushi bars and those without and have never experienced the stink that this one has. My family loves sushi and were excited to try this place out. We arrived an hour before closing and it seemed as if we were an inconvenience to them. The food is good, but not awesome. Love that you can pick pre-made items off the belt as it goes by, but several times I've been in and there wasn't much pre-made, so had to order...which took a while. Prices are a little higher than the conveyor restaurant in the Vancouver Mall, and you only get three pieces to a plate rather than four, which is less convenient for couples who like to share. read more

First off, when you walk through the door it smells like toilet scum. Normally that would've sent me on my way but I was here with friends that suggested it. After watching the sushi pass by on the trolley I noticed it was all covered in mayonnaise. What the heck? So I picked at some edamame. When we went to the front counter to pay the lady was unfriendly and she overcharged us! When we asked to see the bill she refused. My husband payed her then quite loudly stated that we would never be back. Horrible customer service and horrible "sushi", if you can even call it that. Went here recently (first time) and was suuuuper underwhelmed. While the chefs seemed to have excellent slicing skills, the sushi on the conveyor looked like it had been there a while. Freshness is something I look for in sushi restaurants or any price range and I just didn't find it here. Though this place is only five minutes from me, I think I'll stick with my staple. Sushi Hana is worth the drive for much fresher food and much better prices. (This place is about a third the caliber with prices that are twice as high.) read more

By far the best sushi in Vancouver ! The thought of conveyer belt sushi, the first reaction would be the lack of seafood quality and freshness, but this place has quality and freshness! The best baked mussels, the salmon has that amazing buttery flavor, and so on! Prices are amazing and you pretty much get anything you ask for as far as a personal order goes. read more

We dropped in for lunch on a Labor Day weekend. For Vancouver WA, this is a good place for conveyor belt sushi. The fish pieces are big enough to drape around the rice. The varieties from the belt are surprisingly decent for a conveyor type place to satisfy a stranded sushi lover craving for a quick bite, to the sushi timid and first timers. Selections are heavy on the rolls, but there are seared albacore, red snapper and yellowtail, to chirashi and udon as well. We ordered a sashimi boat, and even ordered just pure fish roes for the kids, not bad. Also called a couple orders of tempura udon, and suprised that the tempura was priced separately from the udon bowls. I tried to strike a conversation with the chef but he didn't seem to understand Japanese so I guess he's not. So as Lily pointed out, he must be Korean. I ordered a sweet shrimp $6 special plate, and immediately realized my mistake when I saw them having to pull it out from the freezer. Oh well, it took about 15 minutes to get it done, fried shrimp head and all. It's bad. The unagi roll was good though. read more

This was the worst Japanese food I have ever had! It's the Denny's version of Japanese. The sushi was paper thin and almost tasteless. The miso soup in the bento box was watered down so much I couldn't even finish it-Yuck! The tempura had only a few pieces and one of them instead of the whole mushroom was only the mushroom stem! Terrible... Not sure how they got such high ratings. Maybe they had their friends and relatives all submit a review for them. I would not recommend this place to ANYONE! find someplace else if you really want sushi/Japanese food. read more

Run, quickly, for the nearest exit. What can I say, I was hungry. The only reason they got two stars was I ordered a Kirin Ichiban beer and drank it. This is one of those "train" type sushi joints of which I've been to many fine ones before so I selected a few dishes while sipping my beer and after 3 decided to call it quits. Started out with cold gyoza, followed by a mushy cucumber salad, and tough mussels. The selection is none too good either. So I drink my beer and write this review. This review may disappear though because the name of the restaurant is now Sushi Sakanaya with new owners. read more

Don't bother reading the 'less than 3 star' reviews. I live 5 mins from Sushi Tsunami and my wife and I dine there often. I also stop in (like today) for take-out. This is the best conveyor-belt sushi on the west side of Vancouver. Might be some good eats on the east side as well, but for over here and north of Portland - this is the best. Good food, great service, good value and a clean restaurant. Bento, tempura and more. All around good value!! read more

I went here for the first time Sunday night, it was so good my husband and I went back Monday! The Philly crunch roll is amazing, my favorite hands down. Shrimp tempura, Vegas roll and of course the California rolls are delicious too. also the Korean beef is tender and very tasty. The place is super clean, there is no smell like previous reviewers have complained about...not sure what they're talking about. I highly recommend this place. read more
