Went on a Monday night with a group of 5, including me, around 6pm. The restaurant was not busy; there was 1 hibachi grill going and the rest of that half of the restaurant was empty. 20 minute wait. Okay. Once seated, ordered drinks, apps, and entrees. Everything was going well. Chef came out and was okay. Definitely not the best we've had, but the food was good. Had to ask twice to get the bill. The restuarant had a couple more grills going, but still not busy by industry standards. Finally got the bill and they've added a $42 tip, for a "large" group. 5 people is not a large group, especially considering their grills seat 12 people and they always clump different groups together. I could understand if they were having to push tables together and it was taking a server's entire section up, but that's not how this place operates. When I inquired about where it's posted that this is standard practice, I was only showed the bill, which we had to ask for twice before seeing it. I normally tip 15-20% depending on quality of service; however, forcing a tip on me becuase there's 5 of us is theft. 1 of our group didn't even order a meal. We won't be going back to be robbed again. Edit - After calling and speaking with the so called manager, I was told that the automatic gratuity is standard and there's no one above her that I could speak with no matter where or who I called. No corporate, no owner, just her. She also told me that they were short staffed on this particular evening, which is more grounds to not expect $42 tip, when service is lacking due to lack of staff. I've worked in this industry for 30 years. I know how much staff rely on tips, but this isn't the way. I may have left a $50 tip, if it was earned, but not when it's forced and especially not when it's forced and not earned. Manager told me they'd refund half my tip and I wasn't welcome back. We accidentally ordered from you because we forgot that we had tried your sushi before and didn't like it. For some reason, your sushi has a slight fishy taste--and not in a good way. This has been a local favorite for my family and i since moving to Vancouver and it has never dissapointed us. We've done both the hibachi table and the booth and both were great experiences every time. The hibachi table is always a blast as each and every single cook we've ever gotten has been as entertaining as they are outgoing and personable, i imagine the hiring process must be a rigorous one because regardless of who it is on the table, they always know exactly what they're doing on top of overflowing with charisma. They put on a great show. I will return again. The food was good. I would add more garlic to the garlic butter. The soup was good and the drinks were fantastic. I enjoyed the food better the next day. The service was fast and polite. It's hibachi for the ambiance. Great for group dinners and celebrations. I loved that they offer toothpicks and candy on the way out. The vegetables were the only seasoned food item so I could not give this 5 stars. I will revisit this location again. Umm I never wrote reviews, but I need to write one here and I might call and report them because I saw a lady vaping in the bar Chinese lady. I think that's definitely not OK. That's definitely against food safety. The hibachi was OK. The chef look like lazy don't wanna cook. Toni his name I think He burned the chicken really bad it was way too dry. He was funny making jokes, but the food was not that good. Have been here three times now and have tried sitting at the big tables where they prepare food in front of you and sitting at a big booth having food delivered. Either way it's lots of fun, every bit of sushi. Every bit of hot food we've dried has been delicious And there is a fun cotton candy machine in the lobby. That was really cool. It made flowers out of cotton candy, which we loved highly recommend stopping here for lunch or dinner. They have excellent food and wonderful staff. I love a fun hibachi meal, literally a performance with a meal. We came after catching a late movie and were the only ones but the chef still gave us an amazing performance. The food was all tasty and came in huge portions for the price. I like to wait for all my food before eating although sometimes I take a bite here and there. The filet mignon was tender and juicy. We sat in a booth and did not do the show. The food was okay. I got the Hibachi Steak, Chicken and Shrimp. The beef was tough, chicken dry and only a couple shrimp. Fried rice was bland. My girlfriend got some rolls and those were much better. But the big mark was the service. We were seated and given water. We sat for 20 min before they came back. Took our drink order and our app order and main order all at that time. Drinks took another 20 min and then 40 min from when they took our order the brought everything out at once. The hibachi side is where we choose to sit. We came in to celebrate a birthday and there were 5 of us and we were seated right away. After seating we were handed menu's for both the hibachi side and the sushi side. We all ordered a hibachi entree and some sushi appetizers. Everything was cooked perfectly the scallops and seafood were tender and fresh. The vegetables nicely seasoned with the right crisp when you bite. When they learned we were their to celebrate a birthday not only did they bring out a birthday crown with flashing lights to wear while we all sung HB, they came out with a sparkling candle lit desert at the end and just made our day!! Came here on Valentine's Day with my lover, super busy I'll add. We had a reservation, only had to wait maybe 10-15 minutes before everyone waiting was seated. We opted out of hibachi as there were just a lot of people wanting to sit in front of the grill. We ordered steak from the hibachi grill even though we weren't in front of the grills! I really liked that. The ambience is a classic Japanese restaurant style, it has the fish tanks, beautiful art pieces, an a sushi bar where you can sit and watch them prepare your sushi if that's what you're into! We ordered the sushi love boat for 2 and it did not dissapoint. Simply outdid all my expectations from presentation to freshness of the sushi and sashimis. Kyoto is fun, especially for a birthday or special occasions. Every time we've been our chef has had great energy and kept everyone entertained. The food is pretty good but not the main reason you come here in my opinion. The ambiance is high energy and can be kind of overwhelming, especially for younger kids. Decided to stop in again the other night because my husband was craving sushi and this was on the way home from the gym. On Thursdays, they have 50% off sushi and it was great because we were able to try different rolls for half the price. We had 4 different rolls and also had shrimp yakisoba. The yakisoba was sooo good! Lots of flavor and so delicious. The sushi we had was okay. They didn't have anything that was seared on the menu and seared salmon is my favorite. Restaurant was okay. They were super busy so we had to wait while to be seated but the food didn't take too long to arrive after we ordered. Staff was nice. Will probably try this place again for the hibachi grill or to try their other rolls. I also had 2 cocktails but they were a little too sweet to what I normally prefer. My family and I attempted to revisit this restaurant today, 02/19/2025, for my son Matthew's 12th birthday, as we have done for the past few years. Every time we dine here for birthday parties and other celebrations, we inform the staff about a known mushroom allergy, and it has never been an issue--until today. This time, we were refused service because they refused to accommodate our food allergy. A young staff member turned away our party of 10, effectively ending a business relationship that has lasted since before 2016. 2 years ago we tried the hibachi side and it was good. Fast forward to a couple weeks ago and the food was way too salty, especially the fried rice. Chef didnt add salt, so it might have come from the prepared butter pad or something. My friend said the same thing. I have been to many hibachi restaurants and this one has gotten worse over time. The purpose of a Groupon is to use it once, the business loses money, I've had a business before and I know a user when I see one, the couple across from ya wanted to make sure we saw the Groupon, they stated they use one all the time.... It was weird, I really didn't wanna talk to them and we were the only ones in the entire restaurant! Awkward!!!! It's ok we ordered the fried rice, it needed a title flavor but it was good for 4.50 My Kyoto special was great! A few pieces of shrimp, steak and chicken yummm Soup and small salad. My hubby ordered the filet mignon, I would go that fancy at this place, I'd stick to the fish, chicken and non mignon lol. The cook was super funny and we had an awesome time. We go here here or four times a year. My wife is Japanese and my son is a steak lover. The teppan prices are fair, and the sushi is good. Always good there. However, this last trip, was a bummer. Not because of the food but because the place is starting to get run down. They need to clean it, clean the menus, and clean the floors and carpet. The staff always remembers us and I swarm and inviting -the manager is fantastic - always brings a smile to my face! This place is clutch' for lunch. $12 for a steak and shrimp hibachi meal with a soup or salad - fried rice, and veggies? This is probably the best deal for good food I've ever seen! It's hard to go wrong with any Japanese steakhouse, as long as they are providing high-quality meats and veggies. No complaints here. As far as prices and selection goes, Kyoto manages to compete with the bigger names like Benihana and Fuji's. They have some fun sake mixed cocktails like Ichigo (strawberry) and Saiko (watermelon). Absent is the choice of Wagyu or Mishima beef, which are some of the premium quality cuts from Japan, but those are pretty hard to come by anywhere. Other than a faulty hibachi at the table next to us, everyone in the restaurant seemed to be thoroughly enjoying their meal. We sure did! I had the steak and chicken, while my wife had the lobster and chicken. My only gripes are that the Miso soup was a bit watery for my taste, and the dressing on the salad is certainly non-traditional: it tasted a bit more like Thousand Island then the ginger dressing I'm used to at other, similar establishments. I will say that their aesthetic is on point, and I love coming here for a company lunch or a casual dinner with my wife. In Vancouver, there are no superior Japanese steakhouses, Kyoto is the only choice for the discerning beefeater. read more
