Plenty of parking and seating for parties of all sizes with great ambiance. Seated promptly, drinks arrived promptly. This buffet was surprisingly good! The food was restocked frequently - though my brother and I thought more variety would have made this buffet 5/5. The sushi was good, and I love salmon skin, which they had a whole plate of just salmon skin. That was the highlight of the buffet. My brother liked the orange chicken. They even had sashimi, but my brother said it doesn't last and it's the first to go. Food tasted very fresh and the selection was large, I was honestly very impressed! The only negative was the state of the restaurant itself (not the kitchen or where the food was being served) but the lamps, floors, etc were filthy! Holy moly packedness on a Saturday evening. There was probably a 30 min wait and a bajillion people which tells me A) don't come at 6PM again. And B) people love Makoto. I can't blame them! So much variety, the sushi is fresh, the food is good, and the price is reasonable. This place is one of my family's regular spots. The servers are friendly enough, they bus the tables moderately frequently, and will refill your drinks upon request. It's not a normally noisy place but the volume naturally increases as the crowd grows. Tips - there are no reservations so plan to get there early if you are aiming for classic dinner times (5-7pm), especially on the weekend. Every time we drove by this place, it's extremely packed so I decided to finally give it a try. Well, first start off with the miso soup more like miso shit. My Mongolian beef had a rubbery taste to it. They made me wanna throw up the fried rice was more like white rice with no soy sauce put into it. The yakisoba noodles were all right. Tried coming here for the first time. The wait was crazy long. They said about 30 mins wait and we were waiting in the initial entry area for a solid 20 mins. I have no idea how anyone can hear the lady calling names. I went with my dad and it felt like the line wasn't moving at all. When we were finally able to go to the waiting area inside, it felt like it started moving faster. It was packed and kind of weirded me out that there were people waiting near the food and people seated. When we were finally seated it was uncomfortable trying to maneuver through the masses waiting for a table. If I ever come here again, I'd come right when they open and probably not on a weekend again. Lol. The food was different types of Asian, not strictly Japanese. There was Chinese, Hawaiian and Mongolian too. Lots of seafood options. Idk how people eat so much food but I felt like a rookie. Some peoples plates were loaded lol I tried a little bit of each area minus the sushi. I wasn't sure how long it was sitting out and I'm weird about it. I took my dad out to dinner and he got down with 5 plates to my single. I didn't even see cake or fruit that other folks got. Next time I go, I'll come hungrier. It's definitely a place to come casual and get your money's worth. Despite people staring at you as table vultures, it was pretty good and I'd go back. 02/23/2026 at 2 PM I stopped in after my doctors appointment for lunch, I haven't been here for about a year, they've gotten really dilapidated in food quality and taste is not the same either. There wasn't any sushi left, only some rice filled fried tofu and few pieces of sushi's with avocado and tuna exterior and a mystery fish filled sushi. Only thing available to eat was the Mongolian grill but after collecting my ingredients and waited for the cook but he said it was his lunch time and he asked me to leave it there and he'll get to it, I left the ingredients there for 45 minutes until I was done eating and it still sat there waiting for it to be cooked. Didn't know Makoto lets their employees take a one hour or longer lunch breaks! Only thing I ate was the cooked clams and cooked mussels, everything else looked like leftovers from day before. I was nearby and stopped in this time but will know not to next time. I did leave $3 tip for the waitress. read more

I was certainly skeptical when my parents offered to take me to a sushi buffet. Conveyor belt sushi is often too dry or too mushy and unclear what decade it was first prepared. I'm happy to report however that Makoto Japanese Buffet is an elevated buffet experience. It's price point is EXCELLENT for what you get: a clean, wide open space with simple but pleasant decorative touches like warm lamp lighting and florals; sushi that's being constantly churned out by the chefs in the back who also man a live station, attentive waitresses who bring drinks quickly, and so many choices from hot and cold dishes. The sushi honestly rivals that from many sit down sushi spots. There's so many varieties to choose from, with classic tuna rolls, sashimi, and then the tempura fried ones. There's some really nice mango topped sushi as well. For the hot foods, I was happy to see a wide variety of vegetarian, pescatarian, and carnivorous options. I wouldn't say that every one of the hot food items were a hit - definitely better to spend your stomach space on the sushi. Dessert was pleasant. Wish there was some ice cream but the jello cakes and such came in a lot of flavors and tasted fresh. If there's one thing Makoto should get five stars for, it's keeping everything fresh. I can't imagine Makoto ever getting a health code violation as plagues other such establishments. One of the better buffets I've been to in the Portland/Vancouver area. Servers didn't check on us often as far as drink refills go but they did come & get the plates often. You'll have to ask for refills & extra napkins. Food is better than most buffets. They have shrimp & snow crab legs. Hot & cold. Pretty decent sushi selection. As well as a hibachi grill. I love their dessert selection, they always have Costco cake & small tubs of chocolate, vanilla, & strawberry ice cream as well as bomb pops & orange creamsicles. It's been ages since I've came here, but stopped by for dinner with family. For the buffet options in the Vancouver area there isn't much, so this is a good option if you want a variety of sushi and Asian food. The servers at the restaurant are bilingual speaking English and Chinese. We made a reservation over the phone to make sure they had room for us. It was very easy to make the rsvp. I originally thought no need to make an rsvp for right when they open for dinner at 4:30, but wow glad I did, people were waiting for the restaurant to open back up then. We were seated immediately and the restaurant became packed within 30 minutes for dinner service. The buffet has lots of Asian and seafood options, some meats too. The sushi roll selection is decent, they also have some sashimi and nigiri. Honestly I loved their oysters, so big! Their salt and pepper shrimp was good too. I really liked their mushrooms but the green beans were tough to chew. You can also make your own noodles and pick your ingredients and they will cook it for you. There is dessert too, ice cream, some cakes and fruit. The buffet was clean and not too loud. Food was constantly being refilled and the servers were very attentive. After seating, I grabbed a plate and went to try a little bit of a lot of things. Overall, I would recommend to try their fried and stir-fried dishes as you can't miss with that, and the seasoning is pretty good. The sushi was a hit or miss depending on what you got. The quality of the fish (at least the day I came) isn't good enough for nigiri, but in rolls it isn't bad. The dessert bar was a bit disappointing as it was lacking, but I liked their fruits! Next is the food, the miso and sweet and sour soup was horrible! I had two spoon fulls of each soup and then set the bowls aside. The sushi was okay, one would think that when placing raw fish and sushi out you would have plate's the sushi on ice to keep it chilled but they don't. The tongs that are used for people to place pieces of sushi on their plate need to be replaced at least every 30 minutes. The number of hands grabbing the tongs and serving sushi onto the plates is a lot! Also, the tongs have fish and rice and fish eggs dried to tongs and you are grabbing other pieces of sushi. The hour that I was at the restaurant I only saw one person cleaning and wiping down the counter top of food all over. Lastly sitting there and watching the employees there working they were bored and one could tell that they did not want to be there. The only saving grace of the evening was the chicken teriyaki on skewers and the yakisoba noodles. I will never go back to this again. read more

Came to Makoto for a weekend dinner for $22 which is quite fairly priced for an AYCE buffet especially somewhere serving seafood. It was packed but we only had to wait 10 minutes for a table. For covid there are hand sanitizing stations, masks, and lots of glove boxes placed all throughout. They offer a good selection of sushi rolls, and some sashimi which they didn't bring out until I had already finished stuffing myself :( They also offer a large selection of hot foods centered around both Chinese and Japanese cuisines. I tried a little of every protein they had, and found everything to be immaculate. With the exception of the chicken katsu, everything was tender! The sushi was good and passes the bar especially for what I'd expect from a buffet. My favorite had to be the red snapper tempera - crispy on the outside, glistening fish on the inside that just melts in your mouth!
