Always went to Sushi Ya in Twin Falls. This place is as good. The All you can eat is worth the price. If you leave hungry it's your fault.

My friend owed me a birthday lunch and he decided to take me to Sushi Ya. I'm really hard to impress when it comes to sushi. My family owned a Japanese Steak house for a long time. After serving for them for many years, I have really high standards and expectations. I was very fortunate to have an uncle who took pride in his fish, sushi rice and the quality of his ingredients that he used to serve his customers. From the freshness of his tuna to how perfectly fried his tempura shrimp pieces were to the plates he used to serve his rolls, everything was perfection. With that kind of high standard ingrained in me, I expect other sushi joints to have that kind of standard as well. I showed up to the restaurant first. I was greeted by Bryan. He was also our server. I was told to sit anywhere I wanted so I picked a table by the wall. Bryan got my drink started while I was looking over the sushi list. Bryan did go over the list with me as well. It was my first time at this joint, never had all you can eat before so it was nice that he went over the dos and don'ts with me. I did get some miso and a salad started. It came out shortly so I worked on it while I was waiting for my homie to show up. The miso was some of the best miso I have had. It was nice and salty! It was hot! It had pieces of nori in it and a few bits of tofu. Delicious! The salad was cute and dainty. It came with a white sweet dressing. I'm glad the salad was part of the ayce. It was a pretty basic salad. It was ok. I couldn't imagine paying more than 2 bucks for it. It's amazing how much sushi joints charge for basic salad. Bagged lettuce with salad dressing could cost you 4 bucks, it's humorous. My friend finally showed up, we went through our sushi list, marked off the things we wanted and sent it off with Bryan. For my first round I grabbed the Idaho roll, inari and ebi. The Idaho roll was basically a Cali roll with cream cheese. It also had the same white sauce that came on the salad. Ya, it was pretty basic. The sushi rice had no acidity to it. I expected the sauce to be a little more exciting but it's salad dressing. I did dip it in soy, wasabi and spicy mayo to add a little flair to it. The inari was decent, it was a little dry. The ebi was super tiny and thin. It needed the rice to give it some volume. My second round was some kani sticks and the crystal shrimp roll. Kani (krab) is not all made equally. These kani sticks were dry and tough. I didn't notice how dry they were in the Idaho roll. The avocado and cream cheese helped with the dryness along with the dipping sauces. I didn't want my friend to get charged for it as a left over so I hard swallowed those two sticks down. The crystal shrimp roll is marinated fried crispy shrimp rolled in the nori and sushi rice. Crispy is probably a description they should leave off. There was nothing crispy about the fried shrimp. And it was cut into a bunch of tiny pieces. So you basically got a a bunch of tiny mushy pieces of shrimp in the middle of this roll. The Itty pieces of shrimp were falling out of the roll so it was annoying to eat. The second round of sushi wasn't all that impressive not that the first round really blew my socks off either. Ya, this was my first and probably last visit. Granted, the miso was off the hook and Bryan did a great job taking care of us but everything else was a flop. The sushi rice had no acidity to it. The ingredients were cheap. The owner came up and lost her lid on my friend cause he wanted no rice (sashimi style) with a few of his choices. "We have to charge you more". I guess they serve bigger slices of fish if you order it sashimi style. But why couldn't you have just given him the smaller pieces of fish that you serve for ayce? Why make it a big deal? I thought that was so unprofessional as an owner, to come up all aggressively and make it feel like you're trying to rip them off. All cause he didn't want rice. My aunt and uncle first of all took pride in their product so we would never do all you can eat. Second, no rice? No problem! You actually got an extra slice of fish if you didn't want the rice. Why make a fuss over something so simple? I have yet to find a sushi joint up meets all my of my expectations. I have found couple places in town that are decent but they have not made me crave it so bad that I needed it again. Sushi Ya is basic and overpriced. Definitely the worst sushi I've had hands down. The plates were also extremely sticky and dirty underneath. Table was sticky. Fish was not fresh or good tasting, pretty mushy, and all the rice had a sour flavor like it had too much lemon or something mixed in. One of us ordered the grilled salmon and asked what sauce it had on it, the waiter said "it's a glaze" but when it came out it was covered in mayonnaise that was toasted which she could not eat. For $21 all you can eat you really can't go wrong. The quality and taste isn't 5 star but it also isn't bad. I'd say it is better than average. Definitely better than the grocery store ones. They use eel sauce a lot on a lot of their rolls. Some of the rolls are dope in tempura and the entire roll is deep fried. I thought it was only the shrimp inside so I was surprised when I got it. The service is good though and the restaurant is clean. All in all I highly recommend if you are looking for affordable all you can eat sushi. I will definitely be coming back. read more

It will be at least another 5 years before I return to Sushi Ya. The good The servers and chefs were responsive and attentive - but the place was empty. The meh The sushi. Yup, the food. I tried the Spicy Tuna, Philadelphia and Crystal Shrimp. Each roll had the same weird, earthy taste. It kind of reminded me of how an alfalfa field smells. The rolls were almost completely without distinguishable taste. Only the texture set them apart. This isn't to say that the food tasted like poison. I just moved to Boise and ordered take-out. And, I couldn't have been more a disappointed. We have a sesame seed allergy and noted that for each item ordered; the tempura sauce was covered with sesame seeds. I ordered the combo tempura appetizer and the veggies were 4 shrimp, 2 piece of carrot, 1 piece of zucchini and 4 pieces of russet potatoes. The batter was different for the shrimp and veggies. See pic of all leftover batter we didn't eat since it was so thick. You can also see how thick the batter is around the carrot and zucchini. We ordered a roll that was supposed to have salmon, avocado and cream cheese. See pic. There is a tiny dot of avocado if you look closely. It was mostly rice and we barely got half down. Decided to try it out. It was clean, overall. Staff was nice but not overly talkative or cordial. My hubs had the bento box with the teriyaki beef. The beef was cold. Miso soup was just the broth without the tofu but was okay. I had the all-you-can-eat sushi and the sashimi looked and tasted like old fish (was cracked vs supple) and you really couldn't taste the difference between the tuna, salmon, or the other. :( I had 6 different rolls and they kinda didn't really taste very different from each other. All lacked flavor with the exception of the spicy roll. Their tempura batter was more of a beer batter. The deep-fried rolls had the same weird beer batter, which was pretty soggy. I'm not necessarily a sushi snob but have had sushi at many, many sushi restaurants throughout the USA and this place would be fine if that was all you knew. You never know until you try. read more

My review is based on the all you can eat lunch special. I have never tried Sushi-Ya for a typical sit down dinner. It's really not that kind of place. If you are looking for a good deal, and decent sushi (nothing fancy), then this place does ok. Friendly service, and basic surroundings. Sushi Ya is an all-you-can eat sushi joint which is pretty good and has lots of options. If you're hungry, love sushi, and don't mind dropping $19 a person for dinner, $13 and change for lunch then Sushi Ya may just be the place to go. Here's how it works. If you decide on the all-you-can eat option and depending if you are having lunch or dinner you choose from option A, B, C (combination of two or all three). Each one has different types of sushi, from most basic to more specialty rolls. Once selected yoh mark off your roll choices and hand in your sheet. This goes on until you get full or achieve full Sumo Wrestler! But before you do, consider the follow... Quality varies as the staff attrits. Over the years we have seen servers and sushi chefs come and go. Some servers have been fantastic and others, (like our visit Weds night) were as cold as a dead tuna. Our sushi has been en point some visits and others, (like our visit Weds night) had our sushi falling apart and WAY over sauced for any self respecting sushi lover, (see pic). So, a bit hit-and-miss. In addition, the soda machine was broken so options were water and um, water. To be fair it could have broken recently and maybe they have it fixed by now. The resteraunt itself is clean but the tables need attention as they rock back and forth. Eating at them is like trying to dance in a canoe. Walls need a fresh coat of paint. All of that said, i believe Sushi Ya to be a good value as long as you are willing to take some risk and aren't too picky. I ordered unagi (eel) nigiri, it came out cold and not grilled or broiled at all, sake (salmon), tai (snapper), hotate (scallop) nigiri was all flavorless with very little texture. I also ordered the Rocky Mountain roll to try, the plate it came out on and the roll were drenched in sauce and the roll itself was flavorless with what seemed like a pre breaded day old soggy fried shrimp in it. Sushi options were basic, most of the rolls are either shrimp or crab and pretty basic sauces. Wasabi was not spicy at all. Had to add 2 trays for a little kick. Probably won't come back, even as a last resort. Service was also okay, not the best, but not absolutely terrible. Ive been coming to Sushi Ya on and off for the past few years and their waitresses don't exactly spark a friendly vibe or are in any huge rush to bring you your check or fill up your water. That is why I usually order take out and that's about once every few months. Their sushi is decent. They tend to have a lot of rice on their rolls but the flavor and sauces are tasty! Sushi-Ya is a great example of 'hit-or-miss sushi." I have been here on multiple occasions, and sometimes have been worth the cheaper price for their AYCE sushi, other times make me wonder why I wasted my money. Today was a great example of the latter, and was the breaking point for writing an actual review. Unripe avocado with pit skin was what graced my roll today. I found this out by taking a bite of my roll and pondered, "I wonder what in this is so crunchy?" A lower cost is not justified when you pair it with inconsistent quality of service from the servers, and sushi that can be described as decent at best. And an absolute lack of attention to detail from the sushi chef is demonstrated by what was considered acceptable to leave the kitchen. I will not be coming back. I have a SUPER hard time giving a 1 star review to a business & it literally makes me cringe when I do but... I had high hopes for this place since it's located by my boyfriend's work but what I ended up with was the worst sushi experience of my life. Fish was improperly cut...like awful, all the rolls where covered in brown sauce- most likely to hide the quality of fish (bad). The worst part was that the sushi was all warm, like the fish & rice was all luke warm. Sushi is NOT supposed to be room temperature. The service was bad- we were the last table & I do hate going anywhere within the last hour of their closing but Boise resturants just don't give you a lot of choices when it comes to late dinner so you do what you gotta do, especially when you're with 2 kids (who they charged us extra for small bowls of rice during AYCE). We had to walk up to counter to order more food- which just kept getting worse & worse, no one ever asked us how things were or if we needed anything else. I've NEVER left that much food on a table & walked out after paying- typically you don't leave sushi without having to pay when indulging in AYCE but we simply were grossed out & had no choice + the employees were so ready to leave anyways, I knew they wouldn't say a thing about it. It was just a REALLY unpleasant sushi experience that basically traumatized us all a little bit. P.S. Had family in town visiting from Portland + this was my first time doing AYCE in Boise- what a ugly situation for us all. Lol read more

After waiting a bit we finally got a table and saw that it is mostly an all you can eat sushi restaurant, so seeing that the sushi rolls were priced equivalent to ordering two rolls equals the cost of the all you can eat, I ordered the dragon roll and one of the role and my wife ordered the playboy. . These rules are large, I guess that's a good thing but in my opinion it is not up to par with other good sushi restaurants in the area, rolls are not tightly rolled, and left a not so good beloted feeling after, never experienced prior at other sushi places.
