The service was excellent! Ambiance is casual Japanese American food. Im always comparing Japanese food to my mom's so I tried to order something I can't get at home in Hawaii. Our server was a guy, but the owner Doris is the one who made our dinner special. She is sweet and when we told her we are celebrating a birthday and graduation, they brought us a tempura batter fried banana with whipped cream. It was delicious!! I ordered the Garlic Beef. It came out on a hot stone plate and it was yummy. My son got the Chicken yaki udon. It had some crunchy green bell peppers and bean sprouts too. My son loved it. Hubby ordered mango chicken. We used to love this place but recently came back and experienced a lot of disappointments... :( The fish didn't taste fresh anymore and something about the quality was lacking. We found several bones in our rolls (big and small), which are choking hazards. They brought it up to the chefs and that was about it. Our intuition was right - we both ended up having severe diarrhea afterwards. Painful stomach cramps! Great sushi is hard to come by in Idaho. Boise has a LOT of restaurants, including sushi, but the quality and flavors can leave you wanting. I love sushi, so I've been on the search for a good local sushi place this past year, and I think I finally found one! Fujiyama Japanese Restaurant is fantastic! Why? The quality of fish is great, the sushi rolls are large, and the menu is huge, so your options are endless. Not only that, but you can get larger sushi rolls, or smaller, ones, handrolls, a la carte sushi or sushi entrees, sushi apps, etc. And this is just the sushi. There's also stir fry, soups, salads, Hibachi, Teriyaki, and the like. It's tasty, albeit a bit on the pricy side, but we are talking seafood, so it makes sense. Nobody wants low-quality fish or seafood. They have real crab!) Currently, this is my go to place for all things sushi. Our favorite rolls.....so far....are the Around the World, Eastern Dragon (several of the Dragon rolls are good), the Linda (classic flavor), and the Boise (basic - would be good for a quick light lunch). #5 for 2023 After a super early flight into Boise I was starving. Doing my Yelp search I saw a handful of sushi venues. I settled on one that was recommended by my driver. It was only a 10 min walk from our hotel. With an average rating I was a little reluctant. That turned around when we walked in. Place was busy with a few tables left for seating. We were greeted warmly then escorted to our table. The menu was extensive. I settled on the unagi don buri and agreed to splitting a snowball, "Snow crab mixed with spicy tuna, spicy salmon, onion, tobiko cilantro and layer with avocado on a bed of miso Japanese sauce." This was super delicious. When they brought the unagi don out I was surprised again. It looked more like a giant steak. The skin was tough but the unagi was plenty tasty. Being more than I could eat I brought half to my better half. There were a few people wearing masks. A hand sanitizer was very visible at the register. I was so lucky to get to try this place out during my visit to Boise. My uncle who's lived in Japan is a complete sushi iceberg, and we go nowhere else. I had to have the Godzilla road now I had many other roles and my cousin, to the number of different items the service was incredible!!! Problems with seating: (LOUD INAPPROPRIATE TALK ABOUT WORMS IN POOP FORCED TO SIT NEXT TO IT DESPITE MOSTLY EMPTY PLACE) Our waitress had a bob cut and wore glasses. We greeted her warmly. Told we had to sit down next to a very loud table talking about pet poop parasites and dog anal grooming for 45 mins that could be heard thru the restaurant despite the fact we asked to sit elsewhere and the rest of the place was almost empty. Our order: (SPECIFIED DIETARY NEEDS IGNORED AND CONCEALED IN FOOD CAUSED MAJOR HEALTH ISSUES & PAIN FOR ALMOST A WEEK) The waitress asked for our order as soon as we sat despite not even getting menus in our hands because we were still sliding into our seats, then she hovered over us asking every 10 seconds for 2 minutes for the order. It was rude and we felt rushed. As soon as we put in 3 roll orders and acool green tea and waters she snatched the menu from one of us and tried to take the other so I pulled it away saying we might want more food other than 2 rolls and an appetizer. We ordered a Linda roll, mild no spicy scallop hand roll, and shrimp tempura appetizer with waters and a cool green tea for 1. Food given opposite of dietary needs: Due to medical issue I can't eat spicy foods & said this to her & I asked for a roll nothing spicy just scallop hand roll. I took a big bite and was in immediate noticeable distress and trying to flag some help from the waitress which saw me and walked away. The roll was so spicy it caused my mouth to burn, instant intestinal pain, and I looked inside and found it was so full of Sirachi hot sauce the entire inside was bright orange! Thanks to this, the next day I had to drive a 450 mile trip with explosive diarrhea and stopping every 20 minutes to use a bathroom even after taking medication for it and having severe abdominal pains from being provided large hidden amounts of hot sauce which is the opposite of my dietary need I explained when ordering! I sat there for 45 mins in a lot of pain and was for 5 days! It would have been okay if they listened or if I could have seen it so I could return it but the spicy sauce was rolled concealed into the food and seaweed wrap! The shrimp tempura appetizer came with 2 pieces of shrimp and 4 tempura vegetables. The squash's thick, rock hard rind left was on which the chef should have removed. It came with a sauce so watered down it had zero flavor and was transparent brown, not the regular way it should have been. Nothing to drink: (NO WATER EVEN AFTER ASKING SEVERAL TIMES) To make matters worse, the waitress only brought one water for 2 people and it was 90% ice cubes! 1 sip & gone before we got food. I sat there in distress for most of the visit. When she was told the issue with the food and we asked for 2 waters she rolled her eyes and walked away then sat down to play on her phone a few tables away! We never got any waters despite asking many times or any more food despite both myself or the other party being hungry. She would not come to our table despite trying to get her to even though she was aware. As soon as 2 items were being eaten the waitress took the last menu so we could not order more food and had our receipt to leave ready. My ordered cool green tea was so hot that I could not pick up the cup after 45 minutes even after so many ice cubes had been added to it that it was overflowing! I pointed out to the waitress the issue when I got it and many times after and she just told me to add more ice! There was no room for it & I was out of ice! Instead she told me I have to wait for it to cool and drink it because ordered it! It was still so hot ice cubes instantly dissolved & I could not touch the cup without getting a burn! I was not going to wait in distress and pain because of her negligence with my food, while hungry as well as my companion being hungry still, with nothing to drink another 45 minutes to maybe be able to drink a tea like she suggested to me because she did not being me the cool tea I asked for initially and because she delivered it so impossibly hot to consume & would not give us anything else! NO ACCOUNTABILITY OR RESPECT SHOWN TO CUSTOMERS It is unbelievable to me how rude the waitress was to us, how she gave food opposite of dietary needs, would not bring us water to drink or a tea safe enough to pick up or drink, or how management just rolled their eyes when I tried to calmly explain what happened so they could address it. The person's response to my telling them, was to snicker and walk way! We felt rushed and I left in internal distress due to their lack of adhering to my conveyed dietary needs. My daughter left hungry and ate more food from elsewhere after we left! They had no problem charging us for the dangerous tea or the food they served that made me sick going against dietary restrictions. We left and will never be back! read more

Their banana shake and mochi is awful. Like, reallllly bad. Their mochi isn't the right texture and the mango tasted more like butterscotch... also when my roll said it was topped with mango it was tiny pieces vs a slice. The habachi was disappointing as well... doesn't taste like the best quality steak. I would come back and try all different stuff but I'd likely just try a different place entirely. read more

Fujiyama, my guilty pleasure! Nowhere else in town can you get sashimi and sushi so fresh. Would think I was in a coastal town if I didnt know better! Being a regular, the staff always remembers me, and greets me with a friendly smile. Service today was on the ball! In around 5 minutes my sushi roll and sashimi entree came out, even before my starter salad! My sashimi deluxe entree came with 15 delicate, melt-in-your-mouth fish slices in five varieties: snapper, salmon, white tuna, fatty tuna, and albacore. Each piece was heavenly! So clean tasting, like fresh from the ocean. Even the snapper, which is my least favorite was still delicious. It's a tougher, more muscular fish with a slightly briny taste, compared to the fatty tuna which is almost buttery, not unlike eating a prime cut of marbled kobe steak, with no toughness and a pure, oceany flavor. I also ordered the Capital roll which was filled with spicy salmon and topped with eel, scallop, and drizzled with spicy sauce. The rice inside was fresh: warm, soft, and moist. The fish tender, and the sauce balanced the flavors of the fish. My unexpected and very appreciated treat was a seaweed salad topped with rice noodles, crab stick, and thinly-sliced octopus marinated in a sweet soy dressing and topped with furikake seasoning. The furikake added a slight crunch with its sesame seeds, seaweed bits, and a little dried chile. It was a nice balance of squishy, chewy, crunchy, salty, and sweet. While I could have, and wanted to eat more, I opted to wait until my next indulgence at Fujiyama! read more

Stopped in for lunch, had a great meal. In a strip mall near the Towne Square shopping center, they had private rooms as well as the normal eating area. We found a lunch special that was amazing - soup, salad, a combination of sushi and sashimi, as well as something OTHER than a traditional california roll (eel avocado roll). Our nephew from Florida had a similar special, but his roll was a dynamite roll with spicy salmon. They also had no problems substituting whitefish for ebi given my wife has a shrimp allergy. The rolls tasted worse than grocery store sushi. Mashed up fish that tasted odd. Probably the worst sushi I have ever had. I was going to rate 1 star but gave them 2 because of the sashimi. Fujiyama has been a Boise staple for years. And for good reason. Their West Boise location is cozy, with private, screened rooms for intimacy and a bar where you can sidle up and watch all that tasty sushi being made. I've been a customer for a long while. I tend to go during lunch. They have excellent bento box prices and I always leave full. My favorites are the salmon bento and spicy salmon roll. I've never been disappointed on taste or quality. Sometimes my stomach objects to certain sushi restaurants, but never Fujiyama. If you dine in the evening, you may be treated to a free bowl of edamame or another simple but tasty appetizer. The waitstaff are all veterans and service is typically attentive and fast. The specials are listed on a white board near the sushi counter. While I'm not an adventurous eater when it comes to sushi, my friends are always pleased with their more exotic sushi creations. Get to Fujiyama for a consistent, tasty fish fix! read more

Ordered the 5 spicy hand roll dinner to go. If I had picked it up myself, I wouldn't have paid for it. It consisted of 5 cone shaped "rolls" filled with MASHED fish and some rice. There was no greenery, no texture ( we're talking baby food consistency) the edges of the fish were dried out, what looked like crunchies sprinkled on top, we're soft. It was the most disgusting excuse for a hand roll I've ever seen. Looks like they put their fish scraps thru a grinder. I actually took a bite out of one and on top of the texture, it didn't have much flavor. Ordered here for first time on a recommendation. I eat slot of sushi. Won't be back Oh, and they forgot the salad that's supposed to come with the dinners. Got the dressing though. read more

First things first - Booths only, no tables at this location. Not my favorite thing in the world. Be forewarned. Japanese in an old diner. That adds a whole fun quotient. Nicely decorated, efficiently-seated. I had the "tonkatsu shoyu" ramen, ordered it very spicy and they actually gave it to me somewhat spicy, which is unusual for Boise. I had a Rock n Roll sushi roll, which was fine. The server was a little pushy about getting us to order and it was dead when we got there, but by the time we left it was packed so I get it. Free edamame were good but the food showed up so fast we didn't eat many. Not bad. I'll likely be back. I'd maybe give 3 1/2 stars if that were an option. I am a regular customer and this review was long overdue. This is best sushi restaurant I've found in the treasure valley hands down. The toro is amazing and very rare to find at a sushi restaurant out here. The dumpling appetizer is also so delicious and I order them every single time I go. Coming from CA, I know I've been spoiled with sushi restaurants everywhere but this spot is as close to authentic you can get in Boise and my favorite so happens to be the Boise roll! Ambient atmosphere meets really good sushi! Normally at a sushi place your met with current pop music, lots of noisy people, a goldfish pond that is kiddie pool sized, and everyone is typically yelling. Not so with Fujiyama! The atmosphere was quiet, the music was low and non obnoxious, nobody was yelling, and no goldfish pond! So check one; atmosphere was awesome. Check two; food was awesome ! I have this overwhelming suspicion that Fujiyama means "Mountain of Yummy Food" or some such unicorn fairy magic in Japanese because it was really good sushi! I had a Volcano and a Tiger roll! I typically do straight sashimi but elected to do sushi this time and both rolls were really good! The Nigiri Saki was excellent as well and everything arrived at the table in a reasonable time! Check three; restrooms and decor. The restroom (men's) was very clean and had one of those really cool "bowl" sinks! Very fashionable! The toilet's chain was broke but since I'm one of those guys that girls drag home to meet their dads (O mi gawd your going to loooooveee him) I fixed it!!! So no problems! Seriously good sushi! Their California rolls are the best I have had. The Spicy Dragon, Rainbow, and Luck Luck rolls are fantastic as well. My husband loves their Seafood Ramen and Beef Ramen.
