I came here for Monday lunch. Nice little spot in North Burnaby close to Rosser Centre. We ordered the salmon battera (torched), some nigiris, and sashimi. Everything was prepared and made very well. Seared saba and toro nigiri were delish and affordable. Might return just to try the other seared pieces. Chopped scallop roll is not bad. Assorted Tempura was average but arrived hot at least. Tuna salmon sashimi was quite fresh and tuna pieces were big. The service I received this week does not even classify a 1 star rating. I would give no stars if I could. I had ordered sushi for a work meeting 1 WEEK in advance and when the sushi did not show at 1145am as requested I gave them a call. They were not apologetic and claimed they had a lot of the out orders that day and the sushi would arrive in 15 minutes. Half an hour later I called again and she said let me call the drive I will Call you back. She did not call back so I called again. She said he was making a delivery near by. By then people at my meeting were frustrated and hungry and it was emberassing. At the one hour mark I tried to call again and they had blocked my work number. So I called from my cell phone and told them I was not paying for the order. She said she would call the driver and hung up. I called again and she blocked my cell phone number. Once the driver arrived I told him to call her off his phone since she had blocked me on the other lines which is RIDICULOUS. I told her I was not paying and she said she can only give 20% off and hung up the phone. The driver tried to charge me with only 10% off and I had to show him the math to make it 20% off as he did not believe me. At this point I was so irritated and hungry - and the driver was just standing there looking at me - I just paid the 20% off and took the food. When I looked at the receipt I saw that they had already included $10 for a drivers tip and $4 for a delivery charge and they still prompt you for a tip when you go to pay. THATS HORRIBLE. On top of it being an hour late and half the people having to leave my meeting hungry to go to their next meeting, the fish was not fresh (so fishyyyyy) and the rolls were sloppy. I work at a company of 150 who order from them multiple times a week and after this story that I shared to everyone - no one is ever ordering from this business again. AWFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE AND TERRIBLE QUALITY OF FOOD. We would chose them because it was close by to order sushi but they are just unprofessional crooks. read more

Come here regularly for lunch. Amazing prices and good value for what you're paying.Their all day combo (3 items for $8.95) is awesome! there's tons of options and it's not just one from each column. you can pick ANY 3 - how's that for options? There have been a couple of times where I have found small hairs in my food but it doesn't deter me from coming back since they're really nice here and they responded well when I let them know about the hair. My faves are the agedashi tofu, the salmon tempura roll, and the green salad! Check out my picture - it has avocado and the portion size is huge. The bento boxes are an unbelievable deal! You get 4 different items in a box they really don't cheap out on portions. I've done eat in and take out here both are great. If you're in the neighbourhood stop by you won't regret it. They also do delivery but not at peak hours like lunch and it has to be a minimum 25$ order I think. read more

I can't believe this is the first time I've been to this place because I literally live a 2 minute walk from here. I discovered this place from browsing Yelp one day because I was tired of the options we had around here and wanted something close by. I'm so glad I found Sushi Yoi because I don't think I'll ever go to Sushi Garden ever again. Highlights: - Their toro was great; seared toro is $1.75/piece which, in my opinion, is quite reasonable. Toro is my favourite type of sashimi so this is a huge plus for me. - They have a great all-day special where you get to pick 3 items from their list for $10.45 and you receive a miso soup with that combo as well. This time, we picked Tuna Nigiri (3pcs), Salmon Nigiri (3 pcs), and a Spicy Tuna Roll. - They have really good pressed sushi! FINALLY we don't have to go all the way to Kishimoto or Miku/Minami for good pressed sushi! I would say that it is very good but probably not to the standards of Kishimoto/Miku/Minami yet, but it's pretty darn close and for literally a fraction of the price. - Service was decent! I liked all the servers that we came across and they were all happy to help out. - Even the decor was creative - this place was definitely unique and seating was very comfortable. Needless to say, I'm a huge fan. I almost can't believe that I can get such quality sushi so close to home - it's actually a dream come true! This place is legit. In a span of two weeks, I ate at Sushi Yoi 8/14 days. It's that good. Having said that, don't expect an authentic Japanese staff but it doesn't matter when the food is this good. They have aburi on the menu which isn't the best but it's still good. Their cooked food such as chicken teriyaki, katsudon, and tempura is top notch. Prices are great, portions are fair. it was the WORST sushi delivery experience ever. I wrote a note that i wanted a salad dressing on the side but it wasnt delivered so. They seem not really care about customer's note. And thier chicken karaage was just garbage as it was just a box of skin crumbles, not even with one piece of meat. Probably they ran out of bigger pieces so raked up those crumbles from the bottom of frying machine. Very Awful. Also their spicy tuna sashimi sauce was incredibly tasteless. Have no idea what ingredients they put into it (not even spicy). Delivery timing was right at least (took about 45 mins which was the same with what they mentioned). Next time I would rather do pick-up from sushi garden which is just one block away from this place. read more

The great reviews were right. Visiting from out of town, and thanks to Yelp, found this gem. Flawless meal; tamago roll, assorted tempura, salmon bento box, and BBQ eel bento box. Even though I've always hated miso soup, their version with green onions, tofu and seaweed won me over for the first time ever. We ordered too much food for the two of us though, as the bento boxes were much larger portions than anticipated. Service was perfectly acceptable, we were not ignored, but they were definitely a little aloof. Not offered water, just given tea without asking if we wanted it. Friendly welcome, prompt food, but they never asked how it was or if we wanted to order any drinks. Combined with the scary bathroom, and the super tight seating, brings down my rating to four stars from five. The tiny ladies washroom contained a toilet seat half hanging off it's only attached bolt, making for a scary experience. Nonetheless, the food was so good and the prices so affordable, we are looking forward to returning if we're ever in the area again. I really liked their place up until lately. When they were a little less known, they were careful making their rolls and it was a little cheaper. Since then, the rolls have gotten smaller, more expensive and obviously more sloppy. I ordered a fish lover roll and I don't know if they dropped the roll in soy sauce or what... or their glaze had seperated, even. But the rice was so wet with this brown liquid, it was just falling off. They have a roll called the Osaka, which is deep fried. We used to love it because the meats inside were abundant and now it seems they use scraps from the other more revealing rolls. Some pieces have half the meats, some have all meats. Meh. I wish their quality wasn't lacking. I used to go to them every other day. I haven't been there in weeks since they've been doing this. read more

This review is for the Groupon "Dinner for 4" voucher. We have come here around 10 times the past two years using this voucher for pick up and dine in. We keep coming back because it is a good meal, that offers a variety of foods. Miso, rice bowl, edamame, sushi rolls, spring rolls, tempura and drinks. We usually add a few of our favourite nigiri pieces. Each time for pick up, it's always ready with no issues, although they add a $5 pick up fee. When dining in, service has always been good. Friendly staff. The food has always been good. Fair for this price point. Sushi rolls are small and nigiri pieces are average. My son loves the spring rolls here. He has them at every meal so he is a qualified critic for this item. If your expectations are average, then you'll be satisfied. Don't expect the best sushi in town. This place remains on our list of regular places to visit. 4+ stars if using a Groupon. read more

Not bad for the office crowd. The aburi is pretty and tasty, portions are generous. My friends often go for the three items (from a pre set list) for $8.99 at lunch. This review is for a delivery order. Delivery was generally decent, they quoted me 35 minutes and arrived in 50, which is perfectly reasonable. We ordered Gyoza, Salmon Sashimi, Edemame, spicy tuna rolls, and beef sashimi. The gyoza were ok, but you could easily tell that the ingredients used to make them were pretty cheap and pretty light on the meat ingredients, which I suppose is fine for the price (~4$ for 6 pieces). There was plenty of sauce and they were pan fried, not deep fried, which is a bonus. I found them to be bland, and Mr. J who loves gyoza, did not finish the order, which is a silent sign to me that he did not enjoy them very much. (6/10) Salmon Sashimi was the classic farmed salmon, very fresh but very fatty. (7/10) Edamame... can anyone really give a bad review of this food? they were totally decent and one of the only dishes we ordered that we finished. (10/10) Spicy Tuna Rolls... before I continue I should say that I consider myself to be a spicy tuna roll connoisseur. It is my go-to sushi food. I order them everywhere and know which places make the rolls in the way that I like and which places to avoid. I would put this place on the avoid list. Why you ask? because the spicy sauce they use is a mayonnaise mix squirted on top of a tuna roll. Mayo is not something I like to see in my sushi... ever. I'm aware that I live in canada and thus can have no expectations of authenticity, but to me seeing mayo on my sushi reminds me of that cringe worthy moment in Pretty Woman when Julia Roberts put ketchup on her prime rip steak. No. Just no. The fish was fresh, the rice was firm, but I couldn't get past the mayo. (4/10) Beef Sashimi - This was ify for me. We didnt finish this dish mostly because in with the raw beef soaked in vinnegar there were many pieces of what might have been spinach or some other leafy vegetable. The issue I had with that combination was that the dish appeared to be pre-made and because of that the spinach was wilted and soggy and gross. Once I picked out all of the soggy green (at least 50% of the total volume of the dish) the beef was still yummy and perfectly edible. (5/10) Overall I would probably order from this place again, knowing what I know now the order will be vastly different from my first round, and i won't be including spicy tuna rolls, so this place will be reserved for when I can't physically pick up my order myself. It's a good deal with the all day special but, honestly, for 11 dollars I'd rather have 1 or 2 good things than 3 mediocre/disappointing items. Everything is okayish. Just AVOID the tempura. It's disgusting. Anything fried in their batter tastes disgusting. I tastes like they haven't used new oil in years and like the oil isn't pork fat or something not vegetable oil. As a pescetarian I often order tempura with my rolls at sushi restaurants. The batter is supposed to be light and crispy and without disrupting the flavour of the vegetable or prawn or whatever was battered. The tempura batter at sushi yoi is thick, chewy, and tastes like stale, old animal fat. Disgusting but also demonstrates that the people who run this place don't value how proper japanese sushi is supposed to be prepared or the quality of the ingredients. To people who don't eat animal meat: avoid anything with tempura involved here. Veggie tempura, yam tempura roll, dynamite roll etc. I really don't think it's pescetarian/vegetarian/vegan friendly... The reason why we decided on this place is because they deliver!!! We're all about delivery since we aren't able to leave the office during open hours and in North Burnaby there really isn't much to choose from. My coworkers seemed to enjoy their items but since I didn't try I can't comment. However, I did order the chirashi don (and a miso!) and it was delish! For my chirashi, it was $13 with generous portions of fish. 2 alaska salmon sashimi, 2 tuna, 2 tako, 2 hokkigai, 2 tai, and 2 tamago. The rice however, could use some work. It had zero sushi seasoning and it was kinda hard. Definitely not grade A+ sushi rice but the fish made up for it. The miso was underwhelming and tasted bland. Delivery took a full hour which seemed long considering we ordered past the lunch rush and we are literally a few blocks away, but oh well! They seem to have good lunch specials and will take advantage another time. I'd order from them again! read more

Let me start by saying... I was not expecting a giant swordfish when I walked in... also wasn't expecting their liquor selection!... Came here for lunch on day randomly because yelp told me of a sushi restaurant in the area, so decided to give it a try. I was decently surprised by what I found. Great beer specials, good selection of drinks, semi decent food, and really good survive. The first time I went to Sushi Yoi, the gentlemen serving us was completely rude and impatient, (I used to be a server as well, so i know to cut another server slack) but the place wasn't busy at all. Then the second time I ordered take-out, I went there 15 minutes later then my food was supposed to be ready, and they hadn't even started making yet. The third time I ordered for delivery at 11:10, and they said it would be delivered by 12:20. (should have given up) Called at 1:10 and they hadn't even started making it, and it wouldn't be ready for another hour. All I ask is for them to give a heads up and have some respect for their customers, not for them to make me feel like a nuisance. read more
