The food was pretty good! Taste-wise the sauces on the sushi lean on the sweeter side. The rice in our chopped scallop roll seemed to not have been spread well on the seaweed. I personally don't mind this but if you care a lot about the aesthetic of the roll then this may bother you. Service was very nice! I haven't been to Vancouver in maybe 15ish years but one thing I remember dearly are those giant sushi rolls. I have been craving them for the last 15 years and was so excited to get my hands on some. Our first stop was another (unmentionable) sushi stop but they couldn't even get the rice right (nor were they giant!) but when we stopped here - my heart was happy, my tummy was satisfied. The hubs and I needed a quick lunch and with a toddler and infant in toy, it needed to be FAST. Our boys had already eaten so we didn't need to worry - they were kindly attended to by YouTube while we were satisfied with our food. We shared a combo which was delicious - the BC roll was definitely a wonderful surprise and the fish was just so fresh! But it wasn't until the hubby saw a plate of sashimi that he knew he had to get the toro and it HIT THE SPOT. Service was good - they were attentive and attended to our boys' needs. Sushi at first sight... If my memory recalls correctly, this was the first Sushi California I came to when they first opened. I think it's safe to say they have upgraded their menu and quality ever since then plus opened up a few more locations throughout the lower mainland. The service is always decently good, the food is quite decent for its price compared to similar restaurants, and the casual atmosphere here makes dining somewhat relaxing and casual for all. This time around, I ordered the following to go; 1. Assorted sashimi. Everything was fresh and of good portion. However, I think they forgot the deep fried heads from the amaebi? And they didn't separate each individual sashimi properly. Rule #1 do not and never let a different fish or sashimi contaminate each other!! 2. Spider futomaki. All the ingredients were fresh and the soft shell crab still retained its light crunch. Seemed a little less messy to eat than the regular spider roll? 3. Salmon, tuna, ikura and uni nigiris. Very fresh, good portion especially the uni nigiris, very generous amount. And the rice was nicely cooked and seasoned. 4. Bluefin trio nigiris (Akami, chu toro, o toro). They were super fresh, buttery, beautiful colours, and of generous portion. It's only $18 for the set, it's a steal! Loved it! I seldom dine in at this location now because the shared parking lot with other restaurants could be a challenge during peak hours. However there are street parkings available. The service is always decently good here, well at least for me. Plus their sushi and sashimi are always fresh besides this time around, didn't like how the sashimi all mingled together in the take out box. I really don't recall a bad experience with any of the Sushi California locations yet (knock on wood). For some casual sushi, I think this is the safe recommendation. I feel this is always a good, safe choice when craving Japanese. I happen to come at a decent time of the day on Friday, around 5pm and their was actually a good amount of parking and no wait time. Prices ofcourse inflated due to inflation but quality is still good and fresh. Our tea cups were never empty and staff always to checked ro see if everything was good. We then ordered: spicy salmon sashimi (half order), crunch calamari roll, alaska roll, and two others I forgot the name of LOL. All were up to my standards, the spicy salmon sashimi being the star of the show. Although we ordered a half order, both my friend and I felt it was definitely a full order. We even made note to check the bill to see what was charged; indeed only a half order- maybe it was just our luck, or they increased portion sizes. Either way, I'm not mad at it! I will admit, the inside of the establishment is on the smaller side, with fewer waiters than deemed necessary, but our teas and waters were always filled. Didnt expect much from Sushi California as I equate it to quick and cheap korean style sushi but I think that their food and their service are much better than other places in the lower mainland. I ordered their negitoro and house roll and both had a very large amount of filling inside each roll that was made up of fresh sashimi and did not eat to heavily either. The rice was a surprise as it was a very thin layer (on the house roll) and the rolls stayed together very nicely! I only spent 12 dollars on these two rolls and had enough to bring home as leftovers. Add onto that, the service was great and our server was both kind, polite and although a little bit confused at times, was wonderful. A sushi staple here in the tri cities. Been going to sushi California for years and have always left satisfied for years. Consistency is what they do best, I've never had a bad meal from them, everything's been consistent in terms of taste and quality of food. I would give a 5* review, but over the years the prices are becoming steep. Spicy salmon / tuna sashimi always is good, and theres a huge selection of rolls to choose from. I think it's 10% because of inflation and 90% because of all the condo towers that recently went in, but regardless of why, Sushi California went from "Wow, this place is so affordable!" to "Wow, this place is too steep for my budget." In 2019 an order of Cheese Kimchi Udon was $9.95. It's now $15.50. In 2019 a Dragon Roll was $8.50. It's now $15. In 2019 a Smoked Salmon Cream Cheese Roll was $5.25. It's now $9. In 2018 a piece of Chopped Scallop Nigiri was $1.50. It's now $3. The prices in 2019 were, admittedly, extremely good. I would've completely understood if they put them up a bit, especially considering the major inflation we've seen in 2022. But these price hikes are insane. I've literally never seen a restaurant raise their prices this much in such a short span of time. I might go back on rare occasion, for the Cheese Kimchi Udon, but that's about it. Their sushi is good, but it's not THAT good. (Also, when my father and I were there this evening we each got an order of tuna maki with our udon, and our rolls completely fell apart. I ordered take out by phone at 530pm, said it will take 40 mins. I got there around 630pm. There were a ton of people waiting outside already. I waited 10mins before I finally got to talk to someone, the server told me my order was not ready yet. By that time I was very frustrated to have to wait again. I saw large table full of take out orders that are being filled. I told the server I was not going to wait anymore if its not ready then she told me it would take 10mins. So I decided to wait. Got my food after another 5 min wait. After eating I had stomach ache. My husband also didn't feel so good. Who knows how long the food have been sitting out in the danger zone for. Do you love sushi and happen to be in the area? Go to Sushi California and order the Salmon and Tuna Don. Or the Salmon. Or the Tuna. Or some rolls. Or sashimi. Or nigiri. It doesn't matter - it's ALL good. We found ourselves in the parking lot on accident and only lingered because my iPhone picked up some free wi-fi. SUPER USEFUL! The outside didn't look very enticing, but we noticed it was packed and a lot of the customers were Asian. I glanced at the Yelp reviews and saw that they were quite good. So we headed inside and waited about 5 minutes for a table. There were a lot of servers working (mostly female and Asian) and they were very, very efficient. They came by to check on the status of our cup of tea about every 5 minutes! As for the food, the food was... oh my goodness good. I ordered the tuna and salmon don, and the pieces of fish were thick and tasted exactly like they should. PERFECT. We also got a spicy tuna spring roll (or something like that), and that was tasty and beautiful. (See photos.) I really liked the little green "trees" that made the roll look especially pretty. I didn't have any of the avocado roll because I was full and really don't like avocado, but that was a SUPER avocado roll. So much bigger than we expected! The person that ate it said it was a bit overwhelming at first, but still enjoyed it... and enjoyed the leftovers even more about 2 hours later after it was briefly refrigerated. Upon tasting the salmon/tuna, my dining partner said "People I know that love sushi would say this is what good sushi is supposed to taste like." Total for two miso soups, one salmon & tuna don, a veggie combo or something like that, an avocado roll, a spicy tuna spring roll, and probably 10 cups of (complimentary) tea was about $28. Two people got very full and the food was fantastic, so the price is definitely good!! The place is crowded even at 2pm on a weekday. Parking is extremely limited so it may be better to park elsewhere and walk over. I actually like the sushi and sashimi here. They are fresh and the portion is decent. The uni sushi is really good. I will want to order more of that next time and try other items on the menu. Rolls feature predominantly in the menu. The service was average. I guess it was too busy and the servers did not have time to watch out for diners or ask if they require anything. What happened to this place. It used to be awful to go to because it was so busy and parking spaces rarer than hen's teeth. Even throughout this chaotic scene, the people looking after the customers were as pleasant and accomodating as the situation could offer. I long for those days! Now....The young person taking the money from us is now the only face of Sushi California and she is absolutely a disaster. She is rude, incompetent and really doesn't like her job and really shows. One major turnoff to many, like myself, could be the very thick slices of tuna and farmed/veiny sashimi. Yes, the busy dining room and very cheap prices usually mean that the food is fresh and fast - and that was definitely the case tonight. A solid 3 stars for sure. I drive by this place almost everyday, looks always busy, I've been wanting to try it. So I did today, warning the parking lot is small and dangerous. I had to circle 3 times and finally I decided to park on the street a couple minutes walk. If I wasn't craving sushi and super hungry I probably would have driven away or have gone to McD right beside it. My favourite casual, affordable sushi lunch in Vancouver! Comparable to places like Sushi Garden and Sushi Town but I like the quality and selection more at Sushi California. Parking is tricky, I usually take the Skytrain to Lougheed and walk the 5 minutes. There can definitely be a wait around lunchtime. For a little under $10 I can get 2 rolls (16 pieces) and still have a few leftover to take home. Their nabeyaki udon served hot in a stone bowl is great for a cold rainy day, and their sashimi is fresh. My favourite rolls to order are the Las Vegas Roll and the Alaska Roll (though the amount of sauce can be a little overwhelming at times, no big deal because I can just scrape some off). Tea is always filled promptly and the servers polite. Overall, a great place to satisfy sushi cravings while easy on the wallet. read more

DON'T EAT HERE. The raw fish is NOT SAFE TO EAT. The first time my mom and I came here for lunch we ordered an assorted sashimi combo. It tasted fine and we ate and left the restaurant. We went for coffee afterwards and I had to rush to the bathroom and threw up, feeling violently nauseous. This was two hours after eating there and it was the only food I'd eaten that day so I figured maybe it was the combination of coffee and sashimi that didn't sit right with me. I called them to let them know what happened and advised them to make sure that their fish was fresh and stored properly. The server said there was no manager around and would pass the message on. HOWEVER, skip forward to six months later, today when my mom and I went there we ordered the dragon roll and the chirashi which has pieces of sashimi in it. It tasted great. We ate and left. About two hours later I'm walking down the street and I suddenly feel extremely nauseous, and I vomited violently. Again, this is the only food I'd eaten that day so I knew it was the food from Sushi California. My mom also had stomach pains and diarrhea. So I knew it wasn't just me, and I've eaten at many other sushi restaurants and NEVER had this problem. Came here on two seperate occasions for take out and dining in. Dining in is probably the fastest service for sushi. I ordered an Alaska and a tuna and my friend ordered an Alaska and a California and I'm pretty sure it took less than 4mins. The assembling and presentation of the sushi was okay. I noticed that the avocados were starting to get brown and rice was out of place. They also served it on a big white warm plate which is awkward for sushi. Didn't affect the taste though. This review is strictly for the To Go service. I have been a patron at this place for a VERY long time. Their sushi is great and they have awesome pricing. But the last couple of years, their to-go service has really gone down hill. There would be times we would call for pickup, and we would be hung up on after being put on hold for 2-3 minutes. Their cashiers would be very short with us when paying, basically shoving the food in our hands so we can leave right away. I've worked in the restaurant industry before, so I sympathize when this place gets busy, but at least say 'thank you'? Sometimes our orders would be missing chopsticks, wasabi and/or ginger. But the final straw was when we called for pick up, and when we showed up, they didn't have our order at all in their system -- and they tried to blame us! They were saying we called the wrong location. We had our call log and everything, and even called the number (and their phone rang, too) but they didn't apologize or try to help rectify the mistake. I would have accepted a "sorry about that, we can still make it for you" but instead, we were left with a shrug from the employees, a bitter taste in our mouth, and a firm resolve that we will not be coming back to this place.
