I've been to a few Japanese restaurants in downtown El Segundo over the years. How on earth did I…read moremiss this gem!? Huge props to my coworker for suggesting this place. Hidden in plain sight, Kagura is a top tier Japanese dining experience. It should be noted that this place is more $$$ than it is $$, and that's a compliment. I dropped $50+ here and it was easy to say it was worth it. I treat myself to the Kagura Gozen chef especial that was limited on how many was served per day and a Orion Okinawa draft beer. Plus, I had leftovers. The chef special came with more-than-a-little of everything. Each dish was unique and delicious. I was treated to a full spread of amazing Japanese cuisine. Sashimi was fresh, katsu was thick and juicy with a lightly breaded crust, eel was flavorful and soft, and the soba noodles were perfect. The restaurant is clean and beautifully laid out. I got vibes of actually being in Japan. If you have a reservation, you can get a private booth. The attractive staff were fantastic. Friendly and fast. Water glass was always full and empty dishes were promptly removed. Last tid bits. Two clean solo bathrooms and street parking.

This time, I noticed this location offers special Gozen set meals that I hadn't seen before. They had a limited Dinner Gozen on the menu with only 10 sets available each night. Of course I had to order it. The set came with a little bit of everything: sushi, sashimi, katsu, eel rice, toro rice, ikura rice, soba, a variety of small cold side dishes, soup, and salad. It was a huge meal and I was honestly surprised I managed to finish the whole thing. I really enjoyed it because you get to try so many different items in one meal. If you're like me and love Japanese food, this is a great way to sample a little bit of everything without having to order a bunch of separate dishes. Everything tasted fresh and the quality was excellent. The restaurant itself isn't very big, so it can get pretty busy. They do take reservations though, which I'd recommend if you're planning to come during dinner. Overall, I really enjoyed this special Gozen meal and would definitely come back. It was a fun experience and a great value for the variety and quality of food you get.

We chose to sit outside with the beautiful evening temperatures. We tried of variety of the appetizers including the spicy edamame, crispy rice, and vegetables tempura. For my meal I had the Dungeons and Dragons roll. Delicious. They had a very good NA Japanese beer. They also have a restaurant exclusive beer that is made by the brewer across the street. They have a variety of lunch specials, including a sashimi combo meal with 8 pieces, salad, rice, and choice of a side. So good. My sons ordered a sushi lunch combo, tempura kids meal, and some gyoza/soft shell crab -- all delicious. As a treat we also ordered the A5 Wagyu (which they allowed us to order for lunch). It was prepared table side and was just incredible. Our server Kelly was amazing! Loved her great recommendations, and she constantly checked in with us. Her German/Ecuadorian heritage coincided with an upcoming World Cup match, so having her as our server was extremely fortuitous. The restaurant ambiance is simple yet welcoming along the main road. Parking was a little crowded but we found street parking not far away. I love how they have a waitlist and how food came out really quickly. They have their own special soy sauce recipe! We ordered some takeout food on the side and Kelly was on top of it all. Thanks to Kelly, the delicious food and fast service, this place is exceptional and gets high marks for me. I highly recommend checking out this place.

I still had some leftovers, though. sashimi were thick cut pieces, needed 2 bites per piece to eat. beef teriyaki: get it. even if you JUST get this, get it. I knew something was up when my mom AND sister both ordered some kind of combo, but my sister called dibs on my mom's as soon as she said she was going to order it. this led me to ordering my own beef teriyaki combo. oyakodon was classic and hit everything just right, the cheapest of the entrees but just as filling. love it here!! will be back soon

I got to try items from not only my plate, but hers as well. The food was hit and miss. The beef teriyaki, which they cooked exactly to the doneness I requested, was incredibly good. The steak was tender - the teriyaki sauce was spot on. I also liked the macaroni salad which was hiding behind the lettuce. However, the sashimi and tempura missed the mark. While the slices of sashimi (e.g., tuna, salmon, and yellow tail) were fresh, they were cut way too thick. The assortment of tempura tasted good, and was crunchy, but was battered way too heavily. It felt like the batter was the focal point of the dish instead of the vegetables and shrimp, which I could barely taste. The service was excellent. Our server was attentive even though the restaurant was packed with people. The food and drinks came out fast. They served our sodas in chilled mugs, which was a nice touch. I didn't enjoy the fact that it was uncomfortably warm in the restaurant (it was hot that day). I don't think the AC was running. However, I won't count this against the establishment since the server stopped by our table to apologize about the warm temperature in the room. Some final thoughts about this place. -We came right at opening. The place filled up pretty fast. -There was plenty of parking behind the restaurant. -If this restaurant had executed the small things more effectively, as opposed to focusing on preparing the food quickly, this could have easily been a five star write up.

My one small "complaint" is that I found the seat/stool to be a bit uncomfortable. The food and service was very good. We had: Crispy Chicken (5/5) - Their version of chicken karaage. Very flavorfully seasoned and perfectly fried. I thought the dipping sauce was delicious as well. Shoyu Ramen (4.5/5) - This is what I had. Really good version of shoyu (but based off chicken broth) ramen. I had the thick noodles which is a bit thicker than the traditional ramen noodles. Portion size - lots of broth, could have used a bit more noodles. Tonkatsu - This is what my daughter had. She said it was very good, one of her favorites. A bit pricey for ramen, but I guess it's to be expected nowadays in LA. The bill includes a 17.5% service charge (which is stated on the menu) but the server also made sure we were aware of this before we ordered. The menu is a bit limited (3 types of ramen) but what we had was very good.

They were pretty quick to take our order and to bring it out for us The food overall was good But I was a little disappointed in my spicy tuna bowl. I got the tiniest scoop of tuna, like it was even placed in a Togo cup that looked like a kids scoop from baskin robins. For the amount of rice and salad I got. I felt deprived of protein. It wasn't overly priced but it would have been nice to have more than that.

The chefs work the grill with the calm confidence of people who know they're about to make your day. The service up front is quick, friendly, and laid‑back, matching the whole casual, chill atmosphere, the kind of vibe where you can unwind, sip something cold, and watch the charcoal glow like it's performing a tiny, delicious magic trick. And the skewers? Oh man. Each one hits the grill freshly made by hand every few minutes as the orders get placed, using locally sourced, quality meats that somehow tastes like it grew up doing yoga and drinking alkaline water. "lol." The texture is firm, springy, and ridiculously juicy, a perfect testament to the chefs' skill. You can literally savor each skewer as it grills over Japanese charcoal, picking up that smoky, mouth‑watering flavor that makes you rethink every other skewer you've ever had before. By the time you get to the last bite, you're already plotting your return, or wondering if it's socially acceptable to ask the chef to adopt you.
