Just finished eating here. First the ok, food was not bad, but I think Hiroba sushi tasted a bit more fresh. Just a personal preference, totally subjective person to person. Guapo was unimpressive, Donald Duck was on par, Cajun tuna (nigiri) was good, but the roll was bland and left me wanting some sort of flavor. Now the bad, service was unacceptable. We asked for the bar, and got sat next to a party of 5 or 6. Not a bad thing, but we ordered first and the order of the party sitting next to us gets filled before the young kid making our order even REMEMEBRS WHAT WE ORDERED 10 minutes ago, it kind of leaves a bad impression. If it was a one off, you might not even notice, mistakes happen, It really is noticeable and sticks in your mind when your order gets forgotten multiple times and even though you're sitting right in front of them, they ignore you like you aren't really all that hungry. I love sushimis I have been going to this place a little over a year and the sushi and appetizers are the best. However both the waiters my party got were not very nice and accommodating. One waiter was talking to people at the sushi bar for a long time and wouldn't bring us our straws, or water refills. The other waiter I asked for desert and she gave me some pretty bad attitude and really caught me off guard. Ayce sushi Reno style. They offer the Reno fav's like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck Roll. I can't give them a perfect 5 because they ran out of Uni which is why I opted to wait 3 hours and paid more for the dinner instead of lunch. So I was Hangry when they announced that they didn't offer my fav sushi. But to their credit the staff handled the massive line and packed house with efficiency and friendliness. Literally everyone working there was amazingly pleasant and kind. Their tempura combo is generous including rice and salad. They have a good dessert selection. Downside: Their appetizer selection is lacking. They have the obligatory green mussels and gyoza but I'd like to see more offerings. Such as dynamite, agedashi tofu, more salad options. We even asked the owner/manager about the well drink selection. When we received our bill, the drinks were full price. This is the old Hiroba.  New name change and new menu, but everything else is just about the same.  The old Hiroba has moved to a new location in Sparks on Prater; I believe the owners separated the restaurants.  The wait time is pretty much the same as before.  I remember when I went to Hiroba and the wait would always be at least 15 min because of how small the restaurant is and how busy it always is.  This still holds true.  Their rolls and nigiri are pretty good, they have a good fish to rice ratio, and they have a couple of appetizer options.  I feel like maybe the quality has gone down a bit since Hiroba. However what I still always love about this place are their dessert options.  They have a great amount of options for dessert, and I usually go for the green tea cheesecake since it is very rare and not in any other sushi restaurants.  The service is good-ish, it is kind of hard to get their attention when the place is always super busy and poppin.  Overall it's a good place for sushi if you're willing to get past the wait and small dining area. read more

To begin with, I can't say I have had my fair share of sushi. In a matter of fact I recently grew to like it, and have had probably 6 or 7 experiences since, but never the same place twice. This will be my go to for the next time I need sushi. It's busy on weekends, and keep that in mind especially if you're going with a party. The fish quality was above average from my prior Reno establishment experiences, and it's ayce price is reasonable nonetheless. I went on a Saturday night and was greeted with great service, and then chowed down. In my group, we got a variety of rolls. My favorite was the spicy tuna, but all of them were pretty damn tasty if I say so myself. For non sushi eaters (such as one in our party) the non-fish menu was very reasonable in price, and considerably good food. All in all I'll be back again soon! read more

Best Sushi place in town! The portions are spot on (not too much rice), the quality of the fish is excellent and the service is good. We really enjoy getting the salmon nigiri and it always tastes so fresh. They are very accommodating when we ask for 10 orders of it at once. Last week, I stopped by Sushi Pier 2 because it is closer to my home and was told it would be a 2 hour wait (I came by at 8pm, so I would have to wait until after they closed?) for the sushi bar or table. I asked why there were so many open seats at the bar but there was a 2 hour wait and was told that they were all reserved. I jammed over to Sushimi's and was seated immediately. Great service! Also, if you do not do well with spice, do not order anything remotely spicy. Their flavors are on point and they really know how to season food. When ordering the spicy California roll, they asked if we wanted the habanero sauce on it and we said yes. Within minutes, tears were rolling down my face and I was drinking sake to cool off. I enjoy these types of experiences with spice, but others might not. Monday-Thursday with AYCE you get a free thing of sake which is nice. Overall, this is the go to place in Reno for AYCE. read more

Ahh, where do I begin? For anyone that has been in the Reno area for sometime, this place was known as Hiroba. It has been my favorite sushi place in town for YEARS now. I am aware the owners did split up, hence the name change and few other changes. This is my go to place for sushi, anyone that comes to town I take them here without any hesitation. The only draw back is that it's a small space and it fills up really fast so the wait to be seated during the weekends can range anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. They do not take reservations unfortunately. If you sit at the bar the sushi chefs are super cool and nice! They always make it a fun experience. You can order from the rolls they have listed on the menu or if you're at the bar, the sushi chef can modify or customize your order. They have a variety of rolls, from fresh nigiri, cooked rolls, raw rolls and each roll can be made as a hand roll. I LOVE their sake nigiri (rice topped with raw salmon and slice of lemon) I can simply eat my weight in just that. I always go for AYCE (all you can eat) because I end up trying new rolls and it's totally worth it. The rolls were alright, kinda dry and not very flavorful, definitely not the best I've had in town but the teriyaki chicken my husband got was delicious. Found this place on yelp and wanted to try it. Mussels was over cooked. Most of the nigiri I order was awesome. Cucumbers salad tasted old and not fresh, Instead of the crunch that cucumber give it gave a soft and overpowering vinegar taste and texture. What really upset me was the vibe from the sushi chef. There was a 15min wait for a table so us three decided to sit at the bar. No acknowledge from the chef, even when I was sitting right across from him. The asian chef that was across from me acknowledge the couple sitting next to me and made their order but never once acknowledged me nor did he ask me if I wanted to order anything. I basically had to order through my wife which was RIDICULOUS. The chef that was taking order from my wife seem like he didn't speak any English was very slow at making sushi and my wife have to pointed it out on the menu. The other chef next to him(gray shirt) was loud and obnoxious which was a very bad dinning experience. They also was speaking in Spanish and laughing like they were talking shit. There were only two professional chef I was observing. They at least acknowledge the customer and gave off a good vibe and smile. Hmmm so have been here before and thought it was good nothing to write home about. I was invited here today on a date and it was a disaster the mussels were hard and dry had to chew chew chew away. I ordered a hand roll and a roll I thought I ordered salmon in the hand roll and it tasted smelled fishy I could also see the cream cheese they just stuck a tube of it inside. The long roll was completely uninspiring fries didn't see any fish but a lot of rice? Also got unagi it was blah as well. My date faired a little better. Again there is to much competition out there to be this bad. My visit was 6/23 at about 2 if this helps the owner reevaluate his chefs that day. I wouldn't go again. read more

Good sushi and friendly staff but the last two times I've gone to pick up take out I have spent $60 and left a great tip only for them to refuse to give me more than 2 tiny servings of soy sauce for 8 rolls. Both times kindly asked for a couple extra and literally felt like I was stealing from them the way they treated me. Won't be coming back for takeout here. I'll go back when they Covid is easing up. So anyone who has been a fan of Hiroba a long time knows that is what Sushimi's used to be. I heard the owners split so this location changed names while Hiroba re-opened on Sparks blvd but they have dang near identical menus. However, they are two completely different experiences. I 100% prefer the new Hiroba for a few reasons. 1- the sushi tastes fresher. For example, I went to Sushimi's Friday night and the first roll I ordered was a Guapo. It came out so fast I actually looked around like he was talking to someone else. After the first bite I realized why it had come out so fast- it had been made just sitting behind the counter. I can only assume it was made for someone else mistakenly or the person changed their mind and that's how I ended up with it. I will attach a photo of it. You can see just from the crab salad on top how not fresh it is. 2- the speed of the chefs. Sushimi's has to have at a minimum 2x the number of chefs the new Hiroba does and yet it takes them twice as long to get anything out. I had already eaten upside down shrimp, yakiton and my Guapo before I even got my mussels which were the very first thing I ordered. Lastly, our chef on Friday was not great. I think he had some social interaction isses because he had trouble making eye contact with us and would give us a super weird look EVERY TIME we ordered anything which made us nervous about what we would get... every thing came out as ordered though, luckily. Just a weird guy I guess. OH- the brownie a la mode was delicious! I hadn't seen that on their menu before so we got it and I was impressed. I joked that it was a very "Americanized" way to end a sushi meal. I'm not saying I won't be coming back here, but if I have the option between Sushimi's and the new Hiroba- I think it's clear which I'll choose. read more

I haven't been here in a while but would be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. Their new environment just isn't as welcoming as the old one. I'm not sure entirely why they made the move as it was definitely a downgrade. I personally don't enjoy sitting two feet apart from other customers. Their food definitely lost flavor and the service took forever. It was not a crowded night by any means yet servers were running into each other and just not providing the best service. The only thing I can say is the food came out warm and relatively quick. I think this was my last time coming here which is sad as it used to be my favorite sushi restaurant in reno. read more

Been a definitely decline since the divorce from Hiroba. Came in today for birthday celebration and AYCE, but the service has really gone downhill from when they first split. For starters we were packed in like sardines (if you'll excuse the expression) at the bar. For whatever reason in spite of an entire other section of the bar being open, we were squished into a tiny area, to the point of it being physically uncomfortable. We were never offered dessert as part of the AYCE, the chef was unfriendly, and water refills never came until the meal was nearly over. Paid the bill with a gift certificate, and the owner questioned the validity of the certificate (which had been bought only a week prior). On the way out, nobody said thank you or even really acknowledged us. Please Sushimi's...get better. Sushi in Reno has really declined across the board lately. However I'm not in any hurry to come back here. They were great at first, but unfortunately my last couple of visits here have been like this one. read more

On a value for money basis, this is the best sushi restaurant in Reno. The sushi is very good and the cook staff is fun to watch. Come prepared to spend at least an hour in the restaurant. I understand that you just opened up for dine in during this pandemic but when I call 20 times for a to go order and nobody answers til the 21st time and his greeting is "give me five minutes" and proceeds to put me on hold and I wait for ten minutes and then finally just hang up, that's a little Rediculous. Went to dinner there last night. It was four adults and two kids, one 3, one almost 2. The owner is terrible and I definitely do not recommend ever going here. The bill came at first to 194.00 with a 6 person gratuity of 31.50 and 29.99 for each kid (which in the menu it says under 10 it's only like 14 bucks for a kid, which showed he was already trying to jack the price, but for a 2 and 3 year old who barley eat anything as it is, I'm not paying anything for them to have their own meal) I questioned him and told him I wasn't paying for the kids, they just snacked off my plate. He got pissed and said he would do something about it. The bill ended up coming to 134.00 still with a fucking 6 person gratuity charge of 31.50 (for 4 adults and 2 kids 3 and under. )You are a shitty business owner and we will never return. read more

Forging its own identity in the space formerly known as Hiroba, Sushimi's Sushi is both familiar and new. We waited a bit for a table on a Monday night--not more than 20 minutes--and we were warmly greeted upon entry. My wife's friend and I availed ourselves of free sake--available Monday through Thursday--and I was surprised to see large bottles served for each of us. Not a bad way to get things started. Service was quick, with appetizers rapidly filling the table to capacity. Luckily, we brought a pair of 7 year-old eating machines, twin brothers raised on sushi. You've got to be pretty quick to snag a bite when dining with these enthusiasts. AYCE lunch is $17.95, dinner $22.95, but kids under 12 eat all they can for $11.95 and $14.95, respectively. Miso soup was piping hot, followed by a plate of excellent baked mussels. Deep-fried gyoza, calamari rings, and yakiton filled out the table, each with its own sauce and crispy character. Seaweed salad provided a light and refreshing contrast to the fried tidbits. All of the sushi was top-notch. The rice to fish ratio was perfect, with each piece holding together well. The boys and I rolled through nigiri orders of tuna, seared tuna, yellowtail, salmon roe, salmon, smoked salmon, red snapper, fresh water eel, shrimp, upside down shrimp, octopus, squid, and sea urchin roe. The seared tuna was topped with sesame seed and a sweet sauce, and the salmon roe was a fun salty pop of ocean flavor. Both fresh and smoked salmon were delicious. The octopus was tender and buttery, and the sea urchin roe was that creamy, velvety, melt-in-the-mouth apparition of sea spray that is completely unique. Shrimp and squid are apparently the boys' favorites--I didn't get a bite of either--but I did manage to snag one upside down shrimp. It was stuffed with crab and I thought it might be too much for smaller mouths. I was wrong. I'm told the squid was a bit crunchy, but I'll just have to take the boys' word for that. Next, a pair of hand rolls, one spicy scallop and the other crystal shrimp. Each featured plenty of seafood mixed in with rice, veggies, and sauce, and the nori wrappers were dry and easy to bite through. They were so well executed I wish I'd had room for more. Next time, perhaps fewer appetizers. Three long rolls followed, including the Golden Gate (crystal shrimp, cucumber, thin sliced lemon, salmon, and green onion), Tundra (crab, mango, tempura shrimp, charred salmon, macadamia, balsamic and teri sauce), and Guapo (cream cheese, crystal shrimp, cilantro, avocado, spicy crab, and spicy sauce). The textures and flavor of the Golden Gate were quite good, if a bit on the sweet side. Though I liked the Tundra's complexity, it was even sweeter, which I find a bit distracting. Finally, the Guapo became the one and only roll containing cream cheese that I've ever liked. It was spicy, savory, and--shockingly--something I'd consider ordering again. Unfortunately, it took about 20 minutes to get our server's attention to order dessert, but once done the mochi, green tea ice cream, and green tea cheesecake hit the table fast. The cheesecake was semi-sweet with a texture like soft butter, and the boys loved their ice cream rice balls.
