This place is my favorite sushi bar in town. It is further from my house than several others but I always make the drive. Not only is the sushi excellent and well executed but the staff is amazing! Andy is the owner and he is there very often. He is so friendly and will crack jokes and engage with all of the people at the bar. The rest of the staff is also great! Lunch is a good time to go as it is a little quieter and they have very good lunch deals. Get the "so fresh so clean" roll. HO-LEE-COW This place is unbelievable. We dropped in on the day after Labor Day, about 5:15pm. We were totally treated like royalty from the second we walked in to the second we left. Phenomenal service. Everyone was so friendly. The vibe was very energetic and at the same time we felt like famliy. So the service and hospitality were top-notch. The food... .. oh, my the food. . .. was PHENOMENAL. This is probably the best "asian" food I've ever had and one of the best meals of all time, of any type. We didn't really go for the sushi. . .. we were in the mood for something hot and hearty. Boy did 'Moto deliver. We wanted to try a little of everything so we got a cup of Miso soup and the age-dashi tofu. The soup was fresh, hot, and delicious. Little strips of seaweed and tiny tofu cubes were a nice complement to the very tasty and hearty broth. The age-dashi tofu was. . .. totally amazing. Three big chunks of deep-fried tofu served in the most amazing ginger-soy broth. The broth was so rich and spicy, from what we assume was fresh grated ginger - we were just speechless. This may have been the highlight of the meal. But this was all just a prelude to the Vegetable Yakisoba. This was just as exquisite as the Tofu. A huge bowl of soba noodles in a wonderful rich broth, with mushrooms, tons of shaved garlic, bok choy, snow peas, and artfully garnished with shredded seaweed. We got pretty much full about halfway thru the bowl, but it was so good we just kept on eating. To leave any of this behind would have been sinful. We finished up by trying the Red Bean and Green Tea ice creams. We indicated that we wanted both, and our gracious Japanese hostess said, in broken English, something like "1 scoop?" And we just said yes (because that was plenty, given our stuffed state). So we got two hearty scoops, one of each flavor. Much to our surprise, when we got the bill, we were only charged for one Ice Cream. Then we realized this is what our hostess was trying to ask us. . .they allowed us to try both flavors for the price of one! Just another feather in the phenomenal service cap. Went on a weekend trip down to Destin with my boyfriend. I tried out this place because of recommendations of Yelp. I was... not really impressed. I had a Philly Roll. Every other time I've had a Philly roll, it's been on the warm side, due to the smoked salmon. Not only was this Philly roll pretty cold, but it was really bland. My boyfriend had a Gumby roll, and that was slightly better than mine. The sauce on his plate looked like an unagi sauce, but it was really bitter, so I was unsure how I felt about it. It tasted a little "off" to me. (It didn't taste like a tempura sauce, either.) Also agreeing with a previous reviewer who was disappointed about the amount of fried rolls. I don't really enjoy fried rolls, AND I'm allergic to shrimp, so I had difficulty choosing what I wanted. There weren't a lot of choices I could really enjoy. Service was fine. Amazing and fresh sushi. The staff is so nice and helpful. They are extremely accommodating when it comes to modifying and additions to any roll, but may come with an up charge so I would ask before. Whole crab meat, avocado, cucumber Crunchy Shrimp Roll - tempura crunchies, shrimp, special mayo (but not too much) Sushi: shrimp, salmon, tuna, fatty tuna (my fave!), unagi (fresh water eel), yellowtail, snapper, mackerel (my hubs' fave) The salmon and fatty tuna were delectable - they melt in your mouth! The mackerel was solid and tasted so fresh - fishy, yes, but not in a bad way! The unagi came seared - crispy on the edges and warm throughout. There is limited seating, so either beat the lunch/dinner rush, or expect to wait, especially with a big party. We had been in Destin all week and I wanted sushi, but I didn't want to take the kids out so after reviewing the other reviews here I nervously called in an order, not really knowing what I wanted. The employee who answered the phone was EXTREMELY helpful. I told him what I was thinking and he described what they were in great detail. He helped me confirm my choices of a Cookie Monster Roll and a So Fresh, So Clean roll. I also ordered some Edamame for the kiddos and a house salad. My husband reported the place was small, but packed. He was assisted by a woman who he described as very nice. When he came home the sushi looked and smelled great. I wish I had taken a photo, but who could wait. Both rolls were very fresh and very good. The citrus on them was very good and the salmon and tuna was fresh. I never heard my son complain as he destroyed the Edamame. The only reason I went with 4 stars was the salad (which mind you was just a simple house salad) wasn't fabulous. The lettuce was kinda bitter and all iceburg. I'm guessing since it was the end of the night (8:30) during off season it may have not been their best timing for lettuce. The Christmas roll was good, but the wrap was a crepe or something and I've never seen that before. So if you don't like crepes, skip that one. I found it to be yummy. Also, the rolls are big. We probably should have only ordered three, but we managed to eat them all! Ordered the gyoza dumplings as an appetizer - they were very good. Service was kind and attentive. Two reasons for 4 stars instead of five: One: wait time. Make sure you have time to wait since it's a small place and the chef is totally busy when there's multiple rolls being ordered. And there were three parties ahead of us. Second: there were signs everywhere that said "Be nice or leave" - not sure what that's all about but if there are rude people lurking around, just ask them to leave. Don't post signs about it. Came into town for a few nights on our way to Tuscaloosa, and found this place on yelp. This was the best sushi I have ever had-and I love trying different sushi places. Everything was so fresh and tasted like it should have. We had the house salad, miso soup, spider roll and a side of fried rice. While the place is small, it can seat a good number of people. I would not recommend this place for a big group- but definitely for a date and chill night out. The environment was almost homey, with everyone knowing each other.
