I had the light n' easy combo which was a cucumber roll, two pieces of sushi (I chose the salmon) and a cup of miso soup. They also have the option of a salad. One of my coworkers had the salad, and it looked really fresh and delicious. My other coworker had a kids' meal with a chicken "sushi" roll and fresh fruit. She shared some of the fruit, and it was fresh, not canned, and very high quality. Bonus: unlimited soft serve for $2.95. I'm assuming they have wifi, so chilling there, eating sushi, soda refills, and tons of soft serve is totally a perfect way to spend an afternoon. read more

Called in and ordered to go. Person on the phone was friendly and when I arrived I was greeted by my name and given to me my order right away. Perfect, I was in a rush. $10.28 or so for my Big Texas Roll which is suppose to have snow crab in it but I think they cheated me and put imitation...at least they gave me my soft shell crab. First of all, the name is weird, very weird to me. I don't know who came up with this name and how long it took them/he/she thought about but it does not sound good!!!! This was the reason that kept me from exploring this place at the beginning. Is it a Pop & Mom sushi restaurant or is it a hybrid restaurant (with a sushi literally pop out) when eating? Some of you might think these are also weird thoughts, but hey, I told the truth. Hope this contribute to the owner the next time they decided to name anything else with Pop. The food is average and the price is acceptable. I tried 2 rolls (forgot the name) and they were as expected. I also love their chicken and eel bowl (with rice), the bowl includes plenty of vegetable with good portion of rice. Not to mention you can eat FREE ice cream, can you believe that? FREE ice cream. They only have 2 flavors: vanilla and chocolate as always, the ice cream, of course, is not a wow factor but hey, it's FREE, so no complaint. They will be packed at lunch time so beware. Came here for the sushi/poke bowls and they were a disappointment. I feel so bad for saying that bc the staff was nice and the place itself was nice. But honestly, I won't be back. The bowls only come with rice, your choice of fish, avocado, cucumber, and bean sprouts. I got spicy salmon with mine and no bean sprouts. I added siracha and soy sauce to mine. My BF got the same thing but with bean sprouts and we both agreed that it just wasn't very good. The rice and salmon were both mushy and the salmon itself didn't taste good in quality. They gave a pretty good amount, but that didn't really matter since we both didn't want to finish ours. They offer free soft serve vanilla ice cream, but after I got mine, I noticed my cone had some weird brown/black stuff on it so I ended up tossing that too. Not a good visit overall. We went home right after and had to fight over who got to visit the bathroom first... Edit: TMI, I ended up on the toilet for quite some time after my visit here. I've been here two times. The first visit was great. I ordered the grilled ahi tuna wrap. Delicious. There is a picture of it in this restaurant's picture list. The soy paper lent a uniqueness to the experience that I enjoyed. The fish was fresh--actually the wrap in its entirety was fresh. Nothing about it smelled bad or tasted old. My second visit was today, and I was not as impressed this time around. I went with a friend, and we split an order of Tuesday Tacos, and we each ordered a bowl. He ordered the unagi bowl, and I ordered the spicy tuna bowl. We were both satisfied, hunger-wise, as the bowls are plentiful, and polishing it off with a taco and a half each was more than enough. The bowls themselves seemed a little boring, though. Just a big bowl of rice topped with the combination of ingredients listed. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I may just stick to the wraps next time I come. By the way, those of you interested in the Tuesday Tacos, they are pretty good. They are also a tad small! I really liked the fast food style concept of sushi pop! The quality of the food was pretty good for a faster service style restaurant. We tried the jalapeño roll and the seafood sushi burrito, both were ok. The jalapeño roll was definitely better. It was deep fried with a good amount of stuffings inside where as the burrito was a lot of rice in the wrapping and not as much stuffing. If I need a quick bite I'd definitely stop by again and try out the bowls, they had good protein packed options. I also liked that they serve sake- both hot and cold. Since this placed opened we have been visitors. We have seen the menu change from time to time, some changes good - some sad (please bring back the steamed buns!). Over all the quality of the sushi hasn't changed, still great and fresh! The bowls are awesome and packed with so much veggies! I found Sushi Pop by accident. We were in the area and it just happened to pop up on our yelp/google searches. Its a good thing it did too because this place is a gem. Seriously. I've gone here about 11 times now and the quality of the food is always excellent. But here are some pros/cons. Pros: - Sam, the owner. He's extremely friendly and open-minded (about his menu). I met him the first time I went there and as I kept coming we started to have lots of small talk. The best thing about Sam is that it is visibly evident that he does not see himself above his employees. He is in the kitchen prepping orders and also acts as a cashier if other employees are occupied. - Cleanliness. The restaurant is extremely clean and well-kept. The ambiance is very peaceful and pleasant. - Food Portion. I usually get the Spicy Salmon bowl with sushi rice and the portion size is HUGE. I almost always have trouble finishing (not really I'm fat). - The food is AMAZING and diverse. Sushi Pop offers more than just sushi. They have burgers, fries, sushi/poke bowls, and much more. - On Mondays after 5 (or 4 I forget), there is a special when you dine in. Any amount you spend on dine in you receive back on a gift card to be spent back at Sushi Pop within the next 60 days! - There is free frozen yogurt machine! They have cones and bowls for the vanilla froyo offered. - This is not a waitered establishment but the Sam and his employees often come to check on tables to make sure they have everything they need. Excellent customer service. Cons: - Location. There is only one Sushi Pop and it is located off Bunker Hill and I-10. Already a difficult location to get to if you're from across town, it is hectic to just get here. - There is only one TV and it is not especially big or loud. - Small selection of pokebowls. If I'm correct they only have two types of Pokebowls --Spicy Salmon and Spicy Tuna. They aren't known for these dishes, but I believe one day their menu will expand much more. Why five stars *****? SushiPop is not a 5 star sushi restaurant, but it doesn't intend to be. Instead SushiPop is a causal Americanized sushi restaurant that allows one to stop in, grab the sushi, and go. Clean and friendly staff right off the bat. I went there wanting sushi and found out they had a Friday special Kobe beef burger. In a word YUM. This was juicy and full of flavor and had its own unique flavor. I had it with a side salad with ginger dressing. I tried some sushi from my lunch mates plate and it was fine. I came for dinner and the place was literally empty and smelled like chlorine from the store next door. It was a little strange and off putting. Seriously was looking forward to this place after seeing the reviews. Went today for dinner got 2 bento boxes spent $40 including tip. The waiter put my bento box down and laying right on top of my salmon was a curly black hair! Yuck!!!! I called him back over to take it away and he just looked at me and said that's what I ordered. I told him no there is a hair he said ok and took it away and then came back and said he will bring a new salmon in 4 mins. I told him I didn't want it just to give me a refund. He said ok and I watched my partner eat there food. By the time they were done eating the cashier came over and gave me a receipt for 1 bento box and said it would take 5 days for it to be back on my card. ok fine but he kept the tip he refunded me for 1 bento box and kept the tip. I am a server and I understand how tips are important but you served me hair. I didn't leave you a %25 tip to not eat. We have been fans of Sushi Pop since their original location in Bunker Hill. The new location on Wirt Road is smaller but just as great. Always fresh, delicious food. New Orleans roll is a must. Vicky and I both have the combo meals, which come with either a side salad or miso soup. Vicky had the Alaskan roll, which had snowcrab, avocado, and cucumber and a couple pieces of sushi while I had the High Roller, which was 3 different handrolls. The Alaskan roll had quite a bit of crab in it and the fish was fresh. My handrolls were also delicious and fresh, my only complaint was that 2 of the handrolls did not have much avocado in them. Overall the food was good and prices a bit cheaper than other sushi places. One con is that their menu is pretty limited so there isn't too much variety. So I bought one of those coupons for half off at this place and really wanted to try it out. The staff was nice, though a little over eager. Just showing me the menu once is enough at a order at the counter place. I went ahead and ordered my usual tuna and yellow tail. They were, mediocre and not any better than what you could find at HEB. I also tried the fist listed roll, a trio roll. It wasn't great either. Having family members who are friends with the designers of this restaurant, SushiPop has been on my "To Try" list ever since it opened. After that, I read some not-so-favorable reviews and postponed my visit even further. Yesterday, while starving in the Memorial City area, I gave myself an ultimatum...and decided to finally give SushiPop a try. Boy, am I glad that I did! First off, the concept is genius. "Fast food" isn't usually a positive association. Okay, yes, it IS technically "fast-food-sushi" - but ONLY in the sense that it's not served in your typical restaurant, waiter-service style. Basically, you come in, pick out something(s) you like from their gigantic menu by the door, order at the cashier, grab your number, grab your seat, and wait for your food to be brought out. No grease or drive-thru's about it. If anything, SushiPop is more "fastER-food-sushi" rather than "fast-food-sushi" - more of a "modernized" twist on this traditional cuisine. The decor definitely matches the concept: bright lime greens, deep fuchsia, poppy art, metallic furniture, 90's rock music - all of this gives SushiPop a clean, minimalist-contemporary feel. I really, really enjoyed the vibe this restaurant was giving off. It was a WELL-NEEDED break from cluttered, authentic, somber Japanese restaurants that try their damnedest to make you feel like you're actually eating sushi in Japan. Sure, SushiPop is definitely NOT authentic, but it's fun...and it's honestly not bad! Anyway, my starving boyfriend and I decided to go with the Spicy Tuna Bowl, 6pcs of Salmon Sashimi, the Big Texas Roll (snow crab, avocado, cucumber inside, topped w/ soft shell crab, jalapeño mayo, & sweet chili sauce), and the Krabby Roll (soft shell crab, crab, cucumber inside, topped w/ avocado & eel sauce). Everything was brought out within 15mins and, for that amount of time, I was extremely pleased with how everything tasted. My boyfriend adored the Spicy Tuna Bowl; his only complaint was for more spicy tuna. I thought the bowl was just okay - the avocado slices were a nice touch, but wasn't a fan of how the rice tasted. Sashimi cuts were far from perfect: they looked clunky and awkwardly-cut, but they were big slices and still managed to taste all right - not the best, but definitely not the worst! The rolls were a bit on the small side, but packed a LOT of good flavors. Definitely recommend the Big Texas Roll! I got food poisoning from this place. Me and my boyfriend bought a groupon just to try it out so we got 4 rolls (Tiger eye, Ohh-ahi, Fisherman, and Swamp Thing and Japanese stir fry. When we got the rolls they looked delicious, but once you start eating them they're very bland and nothing special about the rolls. The Japanese stir fry was nothing special, I wouldn't try it again. The decoration is fairly modern and has a nice feel to it hence why I gave it 2 stars rather than one. We did not finish the meal so we took the rest togo and I brought it home to my family. The next morning my stomach was very uneasy and without going into detail, I had food poisoning. Right after, I went to go throw away my left overs but my sister was getting ready to eat it so I warned her that she would get food poisoning from it but she disregarding my comment saying, "How would you know you got food poisoning from sushi? You could have gotten it from something else you ate." So she decided to eat it, and what do you know...the next day she also was constantly on the toilet with food poisoning. I have always seen this place in passing on the way to Memorial Mall and always what like "What the heck is Sushi Pop?". I'm always down to try new places so I kept on saying that I would go and often forgot it was even there. Which makes sense because they have only been there for like 4 months. I went to the Hoedown Yelp event a month back and Sushi Pop was there. They were giving out generous samples and coupons so this was my motivation to finally try it out. I was here with my best girlfriend before a serious shopping marathon. I ordered the sushi combo "Philly". It came with 5-6 pieces of a Philly roll that was freshly fried in tempura so it was warm when it got to the table. Never had it warm before so that was a little different, but it was cool. Also 2 separate pieces of sushi (your choice). I was not a fan of the ahi but the salmon was good. It comes with a choice of salad or miso soup. I chose the salad with the ginger vinaigrette. Very refreshing considering it was 80 deg outside, I didn't think soup would be a good choice. And for dessert all you can eat frozen yogurt! And they have a great assortment of sake, wine and other fun drinks. The wait for the food was a little frustrating. It supposed to be fast per their advertisements but one of the employees/manager did mention that they were down a chef that day. It is counter service so you just order, they give you a number and they deliver it to you. Lunch time wasn't to busy but I'm thinking that many people don't know it exist yet. Staff is very attentive & friendly and decor is fantastic. It's the same team from The Fish in Midtown [so if you've liked The Fish for years, you'll love this place].
