I'm a regular here and I'm a minimalist when I come here to eat because I eat here alone and I already know what I like. I usually get the Philadelphia roll and a miso. At occasions I'd spice it up by deep frying my Philadelphia roll, ordering a mango soju-tini, or shrimp tempura appetizer lol. First time ever coming here. Decided to come for dinner with my family (group of 5). It wasn't very difficult to find since it's located at the mall. They have a bar, and plenty of seating for groups, they put a table ttogether for us in 5 min and had our drinks served within 10 minutes of walking in. The service is phenomenal, and they do have pretty speedy but awesome food presentations. The only thing I was confused about was why they served my sister in law's California roll on the same plate as my other 2 rolls. And the fact that they didnt tell me that both rolls were wrapped in lettuce and they were both on the same plate made me believe that my shrimp tempura roll was still on it's way. So this is the best place for cheap sushi in eastern Chula Vista. Is it the best in eastern Chula Vista? No..I am actually partial to Young Sushi down in Bonita...but I digress that isn't in Chula Vista at all. Anyway, so I met up with some friends here for a Friday night and what can I say..it's like a southbay Sushi Deli, just not so crowded and not as cheap. We ended up getting the Dragon Roll (our best roll of the night), and 2 others that I don't even remember the names of. The miso soup didn't have enough seaweed either. I'd have to say this place is a hit or miss. I've been here a total of 3 times when during the first visit, the server forgot an appetizer item I had ordered. The 2nd visit was for a lunch date with a girlfriend of mine and it was packed house so we decided to eat elsewhere. On the 3rd visit, there was definitely a noticeable improvement as the service was quick and attentive. We arrived at the perfect time as it quickly became busy not long after our arrival on a Saturday. The sushi we ordered was the perfect amount to fill us up and not to mention delicious! I liked that after finishing a plate, the server would come by, grab the plate and then bring out the next plate of food. I'd give this place a 3.5 but rounding up because its worth trying. Like any place in Eastlake on a Friday night, we were told there was a wait. It was supposed to be 20 minutes, but I think it was sooner. We walked away and when we came back others behind us had been seated. Were we seated right away. We sat at the sushi bar. I was a little disappointed in the setting. We were a bit low compared to the sushi chef and his work station. part of sitting at the sushi bar is to enjoy watching him make sushi and even interact with the chef. That wasn't very easy in this set up. We ordered the protein roll and the crunchy roll. The protein roll was pretty good! It was spicy tuna, salmon, krab and yellow tail rolled in thin cucumber slices. The crunchy roll was very good! I hate when places mess up a classic and we weren't disappointed here. We also split the beef platter (sorry can't remember the name) which came with the standard rice (good!), miso soup (little lacking in flavor) and salad (decent dressing). The beef itself was yummy! All in all I look forward to coming back and exploring the menu further. Oh and this place has take out which we will be sure to take advantage of soon. read more

I usually go here as my last resort sushi spot and am somewhat satisfied, even though the price point is a bit high for the quality and freshness of sushi. Today, I decided to get a protein roll, which is the only rice-less option available, and paid $16 for a 6 piece "large" roll as it was described by the hostess, which only appeared to be large because of the cucumber wrapped around the roll twice. The roll was completely dissatisfying and overpriced for the amount of sushi that's on the plate. I left regretting my last-minute decision to dine there and probably won't be back ever. I'd recommend trying out IKA sushi in eastlake instead. Fresh, delicious & quality sushi at a decent price point. read more

We got our miso and sunomono instantly, but after twenty-five (25) minutes our sushi was still beyond the horizon; However, thats not the worse part, we had to tell the hostess because the waitress didnt bother to check on us the whole time. They were real sweet and offered a 20% discount without giving us our rolls--c'mon man. One of the few places where I actually walked out in the middle of my dinner... For one.. the service just plain sucked. Didn't have any setup when I sat at the sushi bar before the first rolls came out. It was kind of weird asking for plates, chopsticks, ginger, wasabi, etc. The green mussels were loaded with mayo and not baked at all. It was pretty gross. The scallop hand rolls were OK... when I asked for spicy scallop I didn't expect it to come with diced raw Serrano peppers. It was really weird The scallop dynamite came with rice which I found to be really odd. I'm not sure about this place, but other sushi restaurants actually the bake the dynamite. This version was also loaded with more mayo than you can possibly imagine. I couldn't even eat this... it was quite frankly the last straw for me. I spoke to the manager and he was kind enough to take off the mussels and the dynamite for me off of my bill and I was on my way. I did leave hungry and somewhat nauseous from the overload of mayonnaise. I wanted to order some sashimi, but the appetizers were just too bad for me to continue. To top it all off... they had a smoke detector that was obnoxiously load during the dinner rush. Maybe I just had a bad experience... but I wouldn't expect the poor level of food and service when sitting at the sushi bar It was just a terrible experience and I probably wouldn't come back here again. read more

On weekdays they have bento box lunch specials which are awesome and probably one of the main reasons I come here so often. It's a fair portion of your choice of meat, salad, rice, california rolls, tempura vegetables, and miso soup. It's truly worth it for all the food you're getting! Another bonus is the half off sushi section. A lot of the rolls can run you a bit of money, so luckily there's quite a selection from the half off portion of their menu (and it's an ongoing offer)! Me and my mother in law were craving for sushi and we were around the corner so SUSHIYA it was. I couldn't really eat raw fish because I am pregnant, I just wanted to smell sushi and eat something I could. This is my second time going there, the first time was with my husbands boys and I had an ok experience as well. The service this time sucked! It took a while for us to be seated, order and receive our check. We did too much waiting and having two kids with you, you grow impatient. I had places to go, things to buy and homework to do. I was also seated to another family, the tables were so close I sear I could touch them if i stretched just a little bit of my arm. Sushiya just disappointed me. I came here during my lunch break to meet-up with my family for my sister's birthday. We got there at around 1PM and started ordering 10 minutes later. We ordered 6 rolls, a udon bowl, 2 Japanese style French-Fry plates, and a Tonkatsu lunch special for myself. Don't get me wrong. The seating was fast. The food was good. The waiter was polite. But I never got my order! I waited for almost an hour an a half and didn't get to eat! Also, my sister was still waiting for one more roll that she ordered. After we told the waiter about our incomplete order, my sister's roll finally came. Though, mine still didn't come. By then my whole family was done eating and I was still waiting! Not all service was bad. The waiter was kind enough to give my sister a free ice cream for her birthday. They also tried giving us a discount on our final receipt, but upon looking at the receipt we noticed that Sushiya still charged us for the Tonkatsu special that I never received! My mom politely asked to subtract it from our final total, but when they did they RETRACTED THE DISCOUNT they gave us. Apparently, the host was only able to do one or the other - have the discount and keep the Tonkatsu charge on the receipt, which I never got or take out the Tonkatsu charge and revoke the discount. Honestly, I don't think that makes sense... All in all, I'm not really upset about the money. I'm more disappointed in how the situation was handled. I left the restaurant with utter disappointment and an empty stomach. read more

Worst service ever. They completely forgot about us. They're lucky we even paid the bill. The host was rude. We told her we think they forgot about us (we ended up going inside to ask for the bill), and she simply said "oh" and walked away. Then some other rude guy rung us up without a word or even looking at us. Both our waters sat empty for 30 minutes. Not a single staff member came out to the patio. We were completely alone out there. Our empty food plates were stacked up on the table, leaving us no room to be comfortable. The shrimp was stale and cold, and the edamame tasted old and soggy. Needless to say we will not be coming back here, and highly discouraging others to eat here. EVEN AFTER SITTING IN THE CAR FOR 10 MINUTES WRITING THIS REVIEW,, we drive by to see our food still sitting out on the patio. This is a joke....... Awful. read more

Venue The place was cute and clean with a pretty wide sushi bar. I liked that the tables weren't overcrowded like some smaller venues can typically be. Food The food was decent. It wasn't standard lunch-house sushi, but it wasn't holy-crap good either. Service The hostesses (there were 2) were very attentive and seated us quickly and our waitress was very nice, but it was so effin' slow. We got to the restaurant at 2:30 and were there for two hours. I'm gonna go ahead and say that this was a huge misjudgment on the management's part. From what I could see there were a maximum of three servers for a packed house. There were way too many patrons for the employees to keep up with. The result was that the hostesses ended up doing some of the service jobs. We ordered our drinks and received those quickly, but then it took TWENTY minutes to place our order. We got our meat dish quickly but didn't see our sushi for a good half hour after we had FINISHED the one we already had. We ordered three sushi dishes and they all came within lengthy intervals of each other. Not to mention an entire family had been seated after me and my husband got their food and left before we even got our first dish. Makes me think that the chefs were getting their orders in scatters. In the end we had to ask a hostess for the check because our waitress never surfaced with ours. Summary I think this place could be pretty decent and worth recommending if they had more help and if the chefs were able to have some sort of organization for the way orders were placed. read more

Sitting at the bar is the way to go when it comes to a busy night. The service is hit or miss if sitting in the dining area but I have never not gotten good service at the bar. Selected Sushi rolls are almost all 50% off and they are definitely delicious. Hands down best sushi in east Chula Vista. Visiting my bro here in Chula Vista, this is his go to spot for sushi. Waiters were very quick to get the food out and very nice. Great space, nice dining for family and friends, dates you name it. We had several different types of sushi and all were delicious. (All cooked) from shrimp, crab, and tuna. The gyoza's and edamame's were good with a great flavored sauce. We had plum wine that was sweet and refreshing. Cleanliness of the place is good, bathrooms are nice and clean. Meh. this place is not the best. I'm a frequent sushi eater who knows when its good and when its NOT. My friend was craving sushi and this was the closest place to her house. Anyways, our server was pretty nice, but admitted it was his first day and he was unsure about questions being asked about the menu. We ordered Garlic Edamame, which was delicious. My rolls on the other hand... I ordered the Spider Roll (cut, not in cone) and The Killer Smoked roll. Never again. Also, my friend ordered the Spicy Albacore roll, and they must have forgotten her order. Our server had to come back and ask "what was it that you ordered again?" My friend loves sushi, and she enjoyed her meal. If we must go back here, I will try other rolls and hopefully I will change my mind. TERRIBLE SERVICE. I've been here a handful of time since it opened however many years ago... and let me tell you, the service is absolutely HORRID. I keep giving them a chance every few months, and it's always the same result. - Waited 10 minutes to be seated and waited another 15-20 minutes to be waited on just for drinks and another 15-20 minutes for them to take your order... and I've gone at different times of the day, and even when there's only 6 people in the entire place, I've still waiting forever and a day to be seated and/or waited on! - Moved to another table after waiting to be seen by a waiter just bc a bigger party came in... AND they get served and waited on before you (to think they'd wait on the people who came in first and/or the smaller party so they can get a new set of customers in and make more money) - PAY 2 DOLLARS FOR THEM TO NOT ADD RICE... UHM.. NO! I'm saving them rice and they want to charge me an additional 2 dollars for me to save them some food. I'd rather save my 2 dollars and waste their rice. The waitress told me it's bc it's harder to roll the sushi without the rice.. WRONG. I've rolled plenty of sushi before... If the rice is outside the seaweed wrapper, it's actually more difficult to roll it that way.. and just so long as the roll includes seaweed wrapper, it will be "EASY" to roll regardless if the rice is included or not - THE "HALF OFF DEAL" Some of these sushi rolls are for a pretty good deal, but some prices are pretty much inflated so when you take the half off, you'll only be getting A DOLLAR OR TWO OFF what you'd pay at a different sushi place for full price.. Some people don't really take this into account and just jump on the whole HALF OFF advertising when all they're getting is imitation crab, cream cheese, and the thinnest smelliest sliver of fish and a strand of cucumber - TERRIBLE WAITERS/WAITRESSES - not only are they slow, they don't know how to serve food properly, they probably spilled drinks/food on customers TWICE when I was there last night... Really? I'm not here for a food makeover... - Old grandma lady manager has such a stink eye when she walks around or if you ask her a question and if you complain about something, she gives you the worst attitude...
