If you've read my previous reviews for sushi restaurants in Iowa, you'd know by now that we always request the chefs to create a specialty roll off menu. Satisfying. Every. Time. Sushiya did not disappoint, this one was a homerun. On top of that, plating was absolutely stunning. I highly suggest doing this for the more adventurous sushi goers. Otherwise, I wasn't too impressed by the quality of their basic yellowtail/salmon maki. Although the rice to fish ratio was ideal, the rolls really lacked fresh bite. The chef's specialty menu was nothing really to rave about as well; surprising because what we received off menu was so delish! Weekends here are insane. When I see a highly rated eatery on Yelp I often wonder "is it really that good?" Such was the case when I was loomung to get a good, quick bite to eat before a show. Saturday night, about 7. The place was full. We were asked if we wanted to wait or sit at the bar. We opted for the bar. Full disclosure, tables opened up not long after we sat down. My wife got a salad, which she said was top notch. I got two rolls. The rolls were large, fresh and tasty. The prices and service were good as well. Sushi in Iowa is not something I get excited about. I live outside of NYC and I'm very blessed when it comes to high quality fish and sushi joints. This place, on the other hand, gets me excited about sushi when I come home to visit family. The sashimi app was very, very good. The cuts were generous. The fish was fresh, the appearance was outstanding too. Once the boat load of rolls showed up, I was incredibly impressed. Everything was fresh and tasty. This is actually the worst sushi I have ever had. The restaurant smells of burnt oil Which is what I smell of now. Ordered the soft shell crab appetizer and received the burnt remnants of such. No sushi or drink specials available, ever. They were too cheap to reprint menus and put labels on the plastic covering - but you can still see the original price, so you know how bad you're getting screwed. Wonderful food! While passing through Iowa on our way to the East Coast, my friend and I did not expect to be stopping for sushi. Man, kinda rough when you come from California to Iowa and want to eat sushi or fresh seafood. It just doesn't compare. I see how Sushiya may be the best sushi place around by a landslide, but unfortunately it just didn't do the trick. I mean, there's not a lot of wiggle room when it comes to fresh fish and seafood. It's the star of the plate - not the seaweed or rice and there's only so much soy sauce and wasabi can hide. In fact you don't want to drown out the flavors with anything because that's the allure of sushi - the freshness of the fish. You want the unique flavors to shine through. When you don't live on a coast, things can become tricky I suppose. Basically I feel like sushi needs to be 5star otherwise it's not worth it. At Sushiya I don't recall any standout rolls. Pricing was moderate to a little pricy (for the quality). The appetizers are ok. We ate at the sushi bar. The people were nice. The space is relatively small. Didn't use the bathrooms so not sure how nice (or not) they are. Unfortunately, we haven't had any desire to go back. read more

When I discovered this gem just 15 min away from Iowa City, there were nearly tears in my eyes. My family is from Taiwan, and I lived in California for over 20 years before moving to Iowa. This might sound presumptuous, but I know what good food tastes like. Or, at the very least, I have memories of good food that are fading with every passing year... Anyways, when a friend suggested we try this place out on a Friday night for dinner, I happily obliged. We waited nearly 1 hour for a party of 3, which made us hangry, but we should have known better. It was, after all, a Friday night. A quick stroll around the surrounding pond area distracted us for a few minutes before we piled back into the restaurant and hounded the wait list. The food more than made up for it. There are Taiwanese items on their specials, and I ordered a small bowl of pork rice. It was delicious and tasted exactly like my mom's--down to the pickled daikon on top. My dinner companions ordered various types of sashimi, which were beautifully presented and we all agreed the rolls tasted fresh. In my opinion, there's usually an inverse correlation between quality of sushi and how many menu items contain mayonnaise/cream cheese/deep fried imitation things, and you won't find that nonsense here. I've been on the hunt for good sushi every week for nearly four years now, and I think this currently tops the list. read more

My husband and I were able to check this place out this week, and were pleasantly surprised by both the options and prices! I had the honey roll and the spicy salmon, and both were good sized. We came here for a mid-week dinner and the place was packed. We decided to wait even though there were 4 other groups in front of us. I think you can reserve but if you don't have reservation, you can put your name down and if you want to sit at a table or at the counter. We must have waited 30+ minutes for a table, and that was only because a group in front of us had three people and we were just two. The table that opened up was only for two people. When we left the other group had just been seated! So prepare to wait long if you haven't reserved. We had spring rolls and shrimp tempura as an appetizer. Both options were outstanding and came with a sweet chilly sauce as well as another sauce that I didn't recognize. For our entrees we had: Grand Prawns with Pineapple as well as three Maki rolls. The Grand Prawns with Pineapple are covered in a sweet creamy sauce and served with a separate bowl of steamed rice. Beware as sauce and the pineapple were both cold but shrimp is hot. (In case you were expecting a hot dish) It was very delicious. The Maki rolls we ordered were: crunch roll, shrimp tempura roll, and California roll. All three were outstanding! A sushi place within a bike ride! Sushiya is located in the heart of North Liberty with outdoor seating and with views of Liberty Centre Pond. With less than a 10 minute bike ride from my home, I have already told my wife that if I'm not home for dinner, I'm probably eating at Sushiya. My suggestion is to sit at the sushi bar and let the chef decide the meal for the night. I do this because it lets me experience meals the way the chef intended and enjoy the treats that are in season. Kudos to the owners and Sushi Chefs at Sushiya in North Liberty! It was some of the best Sushi I've ever had. Everything was fresh and the rice was my favorite - best sticky rice ever. The place is small and if you want to get in before the rush, go early, like 3pm. The staff was pleasant and courteous, literally no wait. Since my initial omakase meal, I have been back numerous times, some for omakase but mostly for regular meals. The omakase meals are amazing but expensive. I usually reserve it for special occasions. Before Sushiya, I used to go to sushi places when I traveled to big cities, but no more. There are not too many places that are better than Sushiya in any of the big cities in the US. Lunch special bentos are a great deal with little bit of everything. I like that you have an option of hot'n'sour soup or miso soup. I love their hot'n'sour soup, so I usually opt for it even if I am eating sushi or sashimi bento. Fried soft shell crabs and Taiwanese chicken are great appetizers. Most of the rolls are well made but personally, they have too much sauce and seem gimmicky. Nigri sushi and sashimi are undeniably the stars on the menu. read more

They have a special menu of Taiwanese dishes and izakaya style grilled fish. We ordered exclusively off that menu: three cup chicken, Taiwanese cabbage, and grilled fish. Is this the best I've had? no, but it was good enough that I got a taste of home. That made me very happy. The chicken is a bit too sweet but the flavor is right, and the ginger is delicious. Cabbage is also tasty, although next time I'll ask for it to be left a little crunchy. Freshness of the fish is not bad, especially when we're so far from the ocean. Such a deal! If you're looking for the Americanized cream cheese type of sushi with low grade fish, try the ones in coralville. Sushi in the Midwest has to be flown in so I am always a little uncertain about it. Having lived in Saint Louis for 9 years and grown up in the region I know good sushi can be had, it's just a bit more of a gamble when you go for it when comparing to the coasts. This was my first sushi experience in Iowa and I have to say I was quite pleased. I had the spicy tuna, spicy scallop, and the yellow tail hamachi roll and all of them were quite good. Flavorful fish and rice done just right. My wife had the chirashi bowl and was very happy with the sheer quantity of fish...at least 50% more than she is accustomed to getting at our Bay Area sushi restaurants and all quality seafoood. They have non-sushi items (General Tso's chicken is a bit disturbing to see on offer at a Japanese restaurant) but overall I was quite pleased and would be happy to go back...I think this place could compete with the mid range sushi places in the Bay Area. The prices are reasonable too. read more
