I will preface this review by saying the town of Marietta, PA is one of the most idyllic towns I…read morehave been to in the US. It is a river town and is a charming place to stay if you want to visit the area attractions in Lancaster, Lititz, or York. The Ascot House was built in 1800 and has been lovingly renovated by Wendy. Wendy is the best b&b host I have ever encountered and I love her British accent and stories. We were greeted as soon as we arrived and were shown to our room (the Essex). The Essex room is upstairs and the entrance is outside, but you have your own private porch which is great. It is also convenient if you have dogs as we did, because you can walk them or go into the backyard without going through the main house. Wendy is truly the most pet friendly b&b I have ever been to as well, and made sure the dogs had a water bowl on the porch soon after we arrived. She will also pet sit for you if need be for a reasonable rate. We promptly joined another couple on the deck for wine and cheese and had a great time talking to them and Wendy. There are two taverns in town that are in close walking distance, McLeary's and Shanks Tavern. Both have live music, but McLearys is larger and open on Saturday unlike Shanks. We had a great time exploring the town of Lititz on the Saturday and toured the PA Wolf Sanctuary which I highly recommend. Wendy is glad to provide any recommendations you need and we enjoyed the restaurant she recommended in Lititz. Wilbur's Chocolate Company from 1884 is also located in Lititz. The dining room is very formal and decorated in a beautiful manner. We were treated to many courses at breakfast - one morning we had a blueberry cake, fruit, and eggs and bacon, and the next morning we had yogurt and fruit, apple turnover, and waffles with true clotted cream. You can also get your own pot of tea which is a nice touch. You should not need lunch after eating breakfast here. The Lancaster area is very quiet on Sunday so you might have to venture farther for attractions that are open. Our favorite activities were just walking around the town of Marietta and looking at the beautiful 19th century homes, especially along the railroad tracks. They have a Candlelight Tour of some of the old homes every first Sunday in December and we have already booked to go back to the Ascot House because it was truly that special. The Susquehanna is a beautiful river and is located just behind the railroad tracks. Yes, you can hear the trains go by in the middle of the night so I would recommend ear plugs or taking some Benadryl. I wouldn't let that deter you from visiting this b&b which is located in one of the cutest small towns you can think of. There are also lots of wineries in the area that I want to try next time we return to the area. Make sure you check out the Chickie's Rock hike which is very easy and has a great view of the Susquehanna.

The hosts, Bonny and Chris, are an absolute delight. We loved hanging out with them in the kitchen, eating breakfast made to order, and having great conversation! We felt like we were visiting our favorite relatives)))) Even though we gave it 5 stars, I must mention couple of cons. 1. The carpet in the bathroom. I don't like carpets anywhere, let alone in the bathroom. For various reasons it's unsanitary, allot easier to clean tile and hardwood floor, than carpet. 2. The train makes horrible noise, it honks for a long time in the middle of the night which is really disturbing. However, with windows closed you can't hear a thing. 3. Mattresses would need to be updated to something firmer and more modern and orthopedic. But I am sure,in time all will be improved and updated. Thank you, guys, again for making our stay so pleasant !

My kids are more excited about waking up for "chores" then going to Disney. Every single time we go (We've been there 4 years in a row) and without fail my kids are up at 6am!! Chores begin at 7:45... Chores consist of Vicky leading us in the journey of how to take care of animals at the farm. We begin by feeding pigs, horses, cows, milking the goat, greeting rabbits, feeding calfs, and picking eggs from the chicken coup which, if you stay in a room w/out kitchen, you get good old country breakfast courtesy of Biz & Tom. There is is a beautiful coy pond where kids swim (bring coins to feed the fish n floaties for little ones). There is an awesome tree house and play house. You can even make a fire and make s'mores. It is an amazing place to disconnect from the hustle & bustle of our daily lives and TECHNOLOGY. However, if you must use technology their Wi-Fi works just fine. We have made it a family tradition to go every year... looking forward to next visit. We've stayed in both the Hay Loft (you get a view of the whole place from here) and Chicken Coup where it cannot get any cozier.

They fed pigs, cow, chickens; milked a goat, bottle fed a calf. It was all around a nice experience. The rooms are super cute. We should have been notified prior to our arrival, and I would have made other arrangements. The reason we select a bed and breakfast is for the breakfast. My guess is the kitchen is not up to code, and they are not allowed to serve food. The place is filthy, and the host is very unorganized. When we arrived the host took us to our room (no locks on the doors) and showed us our bathroom which was a separate room (we had to leave our room to use the bathroom). The bathroom light was not working and not enough towels. The host told us they would fix the light and then she went to another room and grabbed towels for us. The first time I took a shower I found a dirty hand towel hanging on the shower knob. So, I'm sure the bathroom was not properly cleaned. There was one dresser in our room, and all the drawers were full of personal junk, there was no place to put our clothes other than a hanger that was hanging on the wall. A microwave that didn't work and a small fridge that had ice build-up and needed cleaned were in our room. The downstairs was worse, looked like it hadn't been cleaned since the mansion was built, so bad that we would not sit in the living room or spend any time in the lower level. The day we left we walked around the property, and the place is overgrown with weeds. And on top of all this the host has accused us of stealing two of the nasty towels and breaking a defective window blind that was in our room. I guess they need the extra money to fix this place. We were very disappointed and do not recommend this place.

Eileen and her staff make a breakfast every morning that could feed and army in terms of quantity, but the quality of making everything from scratch is apparent in the taste. We had the Farmers Suite and it is perfect for a family of four with two younger children as the room has bunk beds which are very sturdy, safe, and will be a hit with the kids. Every morning after breakfast Galen will take the kids on a pony ride or a "train ride" around the property. They will also give you baskets to let the kids go into the chicken house to pick out the eggs every day and to feed their collection of goats and sheep. Not to be missed is the chance to watch and to try milking a cow. Galen, Eileen and their staff have created a true farm heaven that should not be missed. (The only big negative about going is that when you send a reservation request through their website a lot of times you do not a get a response for several days if at all without sending another request or sending an email asking about the status of your original request.)

All of the rooms are air conditioned and the whole house is extremely clean and comfortable. A huge farm, family style breakfast is included with your stay, where everyone staying eats together. We enjoyed collecting eggs from the hen house, feeding the baby calves, milking the cows, petting and feeding the goats, pony rides and hay rides. Couldn't have hoped for better hosts! Great place to stay if visiting Amish country, Hershey Park, or Dutch Wonderland.
