Le Beau Market: Where I Went Looking for Butter and Left With a New Favorite Market. I came to Le Beau Market, a fantastic little neighborhood market on the corner of Leavenworth and Clay Streets, and somehow ended up on a serious French butter mission. Yes, French butter tasting on a cheap Trader Joe's baguette. This is apparently my life now. And honestly, I highly recommend it. I found my favorite butter here: Isigny Ste Mère Beurre Doux AOP Extra Fin. Here's my highly scientific testing method: take a cheap Trader Joe's baguette, leave it at room temperature, put a generous amount of French butter on it, and taste. No oven. No fancy plating. No culinary gymnastics. Just bread + butter. And if the butter is good enough, that humble Trader Joe's baguette suddenly starts acting like it belongs in a little Parisian bakery. The Isigny Ste Mère is THAT good. I'm actually tasting different French butters this way to see which one can elevate the cheap bread the most. So far, Isigny is wearing the crown. And I have a strong opinion about this: butter this good should be unsalted. Let the butter shine! I don't want salt barging into the conversation and stealing the microphone. Give me beautiful unsalted butter on a baguette and let the dairy do the talking. Of course, put this butter on a beautiful artisan baguette or sourdough and things get even more serious. But surprisingly, the cheap Trader Joe's baguette is a pretty good battlefield for judging butter. If the butter can make THAT taste fantastic, you know you have something special. But Le Beau Market isn't just about butter. I also grabbed a Reuben sandwich with Dutch Crunch instead of rye, and it was very tasty. A satisfying sandwich from a market that feels genuinely local and unpretentious. The biggest compliment I can give Le Beau Market is that it gives me the same feeling I get from Mana Foods in Paia, Maui, another one of my favorite markets. It feels like being among friends. Amazing staff, fantastic neighborhood atmosphere, great food, and apparently excellent access to the kind of French butter that can make me stand in my kitchen conducting a serious tasting experiment with a $2 baguette. Back in the day, there used to be a giant Elvis portrait hanging way up high, thanks to the super high ceiling. So, unless you looked up, you'd miss it completely. Being the huge Elvis fan I am, I appreciated this quiet tribute, & it was just another reason to love Le Beau. The other reasons to love them... Someone greets you when you walk in, will offer assistance if you're obviously seeking a specific item, & your cashier is ready with both a smile & a thank you on your way out. The deli. A sandwich from this deli is more than a sandwich, it's an art form. The sandwich menu (look up) has all the greatest hits. If their version doesn't include your favorite bread, don't be too shy to ask them to sub it out. You can customize your Sammy! If you want Dutch crunch, just ask for Dutch crunch! I'm partial to the Reuben. Old school & proper, on toasted rye, this is the best Reuben in the neighborhood. There's an assortment of potato chips to go with your sandwich that easily rivals any big chain store. Cape Cod? Miss Vickie's? Some Irish chips I'd never even heard of? (Delish btw) Somehow, even though they can't possibly have everything you need, they actually do. Missing an ingredient for that dinner you're about to make? Dollars to donuts it'll be here. We had a very disappointing experience with Le Beau Deli. We placed an order through their website for delivery and paid the delivery fee plus a tip, only to get a call afterward saying they couldn't deliver my order for no real reason. That was frustrating enough, but what made it worse is that I still have not been refunded. If you're going to offer delivery on your site and charge customers for it, you need to actually follow through or immediately issue a refund when you can't. This felt unprofessional and unfair. Le Beau Market was a convenient market to find while exploring Nob Hill area. I wanted stopped in to buy a seltzer water and could have bought deli sandwiches. They had deli service. It was quaint and had everything plus sandwiches. I had just eaten lunch. Otherwise, I would have grabbed a sandwich and eaten on their outdoor picnic area. He go the Turkey Butta and I got the Funky Chicken. The sandwiches took maybe like 5 minutes or so. They're a pretty decent size. I will say that his was definitely better. Bread makes such a difference in sandwiches and Dutch Crunch is just the elite sandwich bread. Mine also didn't have as much flavor overall -- I wish this had some kind of slight kick or spice to it. This is my neighborhood supermarket and for so long, I avoided it because I thought it was overpriced. I've recently begun coming here more for their sandwiches, Boichik bagels, and they keep having fresh fruit on sale at prices comparable to Trader Joe's (cherries, strawberries, and papaya) but look like they're better/nicer so I am hooked! OH. MY.GAWD! This is the most impeccable market. I think it's a Nob Hill thing bc the markets in this neighborhood are great but Le Beau rises high above the rest. Great selection of groceries, meats, frozen foods, wine, liquor, coffee, fresh Acme Bread, chocolate- you name it they have the best of the best. I grabbed a fabulous salad from the grab and go case and ordered the Esteak from Alcatraz Sandwich at the counter (order at the counter, they'll give you a ticket number and you then go to pay on the market line). Wow- this sandwich is all I'm going to dream of for a while. Sliced ribeye steak with sautéed mushrooms and onions and a blue cheese shmear. It's heaven on a fresh roll! This is a bustling market and the employees are all busy yet attentive. The market is sparkling clean, too! I can't say enough great things and I'll now be a regular since it's a short uphill walk from my apartment. Moved in a month ago up a few blocks from this market! This review is primarily for their sandwiches, but if you do check out the market, it has everything you need. The organic fruit is locally farmed and are top notch. I took my family here after moving into our place, and we ordered sandwiches which were all pretty good! The Dutch crunch is toasted and not too bready. I ordered a pastrami sandwich which resembled a Reuben except the rye bread, haha! The pastrami was smoky, peppery, and tender, the sauerkraut was crunch and tart, and in tandem made a pretty sweet sandwich! This is a very good grocery store and, following several recent closings and displacements, clearly the best in the neighborhood, your go-to option for fresh food and clean eating for several blocks in either direction. They clearly curate all of their products very carefully to pack in as many good options as one could imagine on a relatively modest footprint. And on one ambitious visit several months ago when I wanted a) lentil soup and b) to avoid a long drive elsewhere, I decided to put it to the test, and I came away with a haul that included artichokes, chard, olive oil, polenta, green lentils, brown lentils, farro, hummus, bread, vegetable stock, and tomato paste. You can do what you need to do here, and that includes referring to a competently managed meat counter and wine section, if you're game to prepare a full home-cooked meal for someone you'd like to impress. As for 4 stars not 5: They're doing great for SF, but I can't fully absolve SF for setting the ceiling too low in terms of affordability. The prices here are high--perhaps not notably high on the SF spectrum but nonetheless high enough to exclude. And the staff, who are usually very pleasant and clearly care about the business, have at times monitored me more closely than I would like. Based on the price point, I primarily rely on this location for fresh bread and the occasional pastry, both of which are lovely to have given the lack of other good options in the surrounding area. So, YMMV. All in all, I vote that it is a great store full of many wonderful things, and very much worth keeping on your roster. read more

I was pleasantly surprised and delighted by this cute neighborhood gem. During the shelter-in-place, I was cooking more often and a hard time finding some baking ingredients and niche spices - xantham gum, anyone? Canadian bacon? Funny enough, I discovered this place from Instacart as they have an online catalog of what's in stock in your local stores. It's a small store but dense in variety and the staff are very on top of keeping everything restocked. All the produce and foods look super fresh. They even carry McConnell's ice cream and Acme Bread. There seems to be a focus on sourcing local bay area products. There are even signs about if you are sick, you can email and there's a volunteer program to deliver your groceries for you. It's very heartwarming in these trying times. Come here for the best deli sandwiches! They are delicious and all the Ingredients are fresh and high quality. The meats they use are top notch and the sandwiches themselves are very filling. My only complaint is that I've had a couple orders that weren't made the same as the online description. For example, got jalapeños on one sandwich that said it would be pepperoncinis. And they have ran out of deli rolls before only offering sandwich bread which wasn't represented online. Huge bummer! I will definitely frequent Le Beau whenever I want a bomb deli sub.
