After a long day paddleboarding out on the lake, the hunger hit me like a WWE folding chair. I'm floating around searching for food on my phone and realize my favorite taco spot closes in 3 minutes. I literally hit the "noooooo" out loud on the water like somebody just canceled taco Christmas. So now I'm panic searching while trying not to fall off the board and came across this spot less than 2 miles away in Old Folsom. Mission one was parking and let me tell you... parking in Old Folsom is basically a trust exercise with the universe. Walked in and immediately got greeted which already put me in a better mood because at this point I was one skipped meal away from becoming dramatic. Ordered 3 carne asada tacos with rice and beans and the gentleman at the counter tells me they've been there 10 years. I'm thinking alright sir... talk spicy to me then. What made me laugh was this man was doing EVERYTHING. Taking orders, cleaning tables, cooking food, probably could've fixed my paddleboard if I asked him. Meanwhile the restaurant was spotless too. Dude was moving around like he drank three espresso shots and said "I got this." Then the food came out and man... first bite had me questioning my loyalty to my old taco spot. The tacos were fresh, flavorful, and messy in the best way possible where you know your shirt might become collateral damage. The rice and beans? As I always say, take my reviews of Mexican restaurants with a grain of salt. Of all cuisines, Mexican is not my favorite, so i try to be fair. I went with my daughter and her boyfriend here for a quick bite, during a relaxing day in old town Folsom. The menu is run of the mill. It is basic run of the mill quick service restaurant....tacos, burrito, quesadillas...and your choice of protein. I originally ordered a fish quesadilla, but he told me after we paid that the fish is pretty mixed (??) with pico de gallo. I got a meat quesadilla instead. I didn't know a fish could be "pre-mixed," but whatever, he quickly made the new order. Oh...and I prefer my quesadillas to taste of gooey melted cheese....not flavorless UNMELTED filler While nice on the surface, he didn't offer to refund the difference in cost between the two items. Probably coincidence, but.... He told us AFTER we paid, and didn't refund us. This is not different from numerous other similar restaurants. I stopped in here while my daughter was getting a tattoo around the corner to grab some lunch. The food is extremely overpriced for the amount of food they give you and very bland. I'm honestly surprised that they have stayed open this long. Not to mention, the dining area looked really dirty, and appeared as if nobody had mopped the floor that day. I walked in and I have obviously a broken leg and I asked the guy behind the counter if I can use your bathroom, and he told me "can't you read the sign, bathrooms are guest only" I apologized and I walked away. This place is the true meaning of "hole in the wall". I've been meaning to try food here but am not often in this part of town. My kids and I went here for lunch and this is what we experienced... Service: We were greeted right away. I tend to get anxious to try to places because it can take me time to order. So I appreciated that there was no pressure to order quickly. Payment was quick and easy. We got or food out quickly but I am mindful that we ordered right before the lunch crowd came in. Food: Delicious! I only bought food for the kids but after having a bite, I ended up ordering my own plate. Staff helped me with making a decision and ordered their super taco with carnitas. It was soooo good. The portion was just right since I didn't want something too small or too big either. In general, meat portions were excellent. I also love their salsas which I feel can make or break the meal. Location: There isn't a lot of dining inside but there are areas outside you can sit and eat. You wouldn't be able to have a large party here. This side of town can get a bit busy too, so parking can get difficult depending on the day. But the food here definitely overrules this for me. This place is generous with their ingredients. Been here a few times now in the past few months and not disappointed. And it is a nice experience to eat outside (when covid times allow it) on the historic Folsom street. Such a nice vibe. The orders has been made in a timely manner. The staff has been helpful and nice each time. Cheese quesadilla is average which is not a bad thing. No surprises there. It is great to be able to choice from different preps of chicken (I chose shredded) for my burrito. The season is good and packed with chicken. I appreciate that they didn't skim on the protein. Sitting right next to Reset on Sitter Street sits this little taqueria. I was able to call in my order so that I could just stop by to pick it up. They said it would take about 10 minutes so off we went. We arrived in 15 and they were furiously making our tacos still. The crew of teenage boys was very nice and I had my food within 10 minutes of arrival. 18 street tacos for $71 is a bit pricey, but let's see how it tastes. Grilled chicken - 2/10 - Soooooo dry I'm actually amazed at how dry they got that. I can feel my soul being sucked into the chicken Shredded chicken - 3/10 - Plain boiled chicken...no spices on it whatsoever Chicken Chile verde - 4/10 - Where's the Chile verde? It tasted mostly of shredded chicken and I couldn't find much sauce Carnitas - 5/10 - My wife makes a more flavorful and crispy yet tender version and she just learned how. Carnitas Chile verde - Carne Asada - 6/10 - Decent flavor but I prefer smaller dices in my tacos. Could use more seasoning. Well, I was pretty disappointed in all of the tacos BUT I will say that they have a very friendly staff and they put a huge portion of meat in every taco. One of the better Mexican restaurants in the area - and we're pretty picky, having moved here from Santa Barbara. However, they do not appear to have set hours? It seems like every time we walk down they are closed! If you want Mexican food any day after 4:30 pm then you may be better off heading to another taqueria, because it seems like they're closed 75% of the time. Today, a Friday, they were closed when we arrived at 4:45. Another family arrived at the same time, hoping to have dinner there. We were all disappointed. Please, please fix the hours situation. This place deserves all the great hype it can get. By far, it's the best version of a Mission-style burrito that I've found outside of the Mission. Our group had people who didn't like spice, vegetarians, and others with food allergies, and everyone found something to eat here (and everyone raved about their food). Reading NextDoor so see what neighborly drama was going on, I came upon a recommendation for this place. How naive. If you can't get tacos right, no matter how compelling the rest of the menu might be. Who puts beans, just plain beans on top of tacos? And then bland, unseasoned tomato. You already put onion and some cilantro there- why not bel less lazy and make an actual pico de Gallo? I gotta admit there were clever with the meat: it wasn't just asada meat, but also ground beef mixed it. It makes it juicier but greasy as well. The kids, really, kids who skateboard in front of the establishment during their break, do and ok job tending the shop. They just gotta remember to clear up then table and salsas more often, as leaving them in the heat makes them grow bacteria. Specially if they stick them in the fridge later. I will never know what this place tastes like. On Yelp it says it open at 10 AM on Fridays. Their Facebook pages says 10 AM. Arrived there in front of the store at 10 AM with two people inside. We waited 30 minutes with the employees making eye contact with us as they see us pacing outside the front door. We overheard as 1 of the employees made a comment that they wouldn't be open until 11 AM. NOT ONE employee could come out and give us a heads up. Ate a veggie burrito (pinto bean, rice, pico, lettuce, guac, sour cream, cheese) and a regular burrito (rice, meat, beans, chees, pico). The burrito quality is average and so is the size. They put a ton of rice in both burritos. They didn't put much of other stuff. Rice is good. But I wish they'd proportion it better. They put very little pico in the burritos too. I asked for no meat in my regular burrito. I asked for them to add a little more of rice or something to make up the difference. *They don't make substitutes or add more to make up if you leave something out.* charge 25 cents per water cup. 10.25 for the regular burrito. 12.25 for the veggie burrito (same price as a super burrito They sell). Kids at the register were visibly disinterested, gave the impression of being owners' kids being forced to work there. I ordered carnitas and for the life of me thought they'd mistakenly given me shredded chicken breast, don't know how carnitas could be so dry and flavorless. Two stars because when they first opened up they weren't so bad and if push came to shove I might walk in again since they are the only fast foodish Mexican restaurant on Sutter street, and when you want a taco, you want a taco. Qbole is a hundred times better but sometimes you don't want to have a long meal at a sit down restaurant. Just read some of the other reviews and had to laugh in agreement at some of them, sorry to the owners who are actually Mexican, but this is very much gringo Mexican food. To be fair, maybe when they're on the premises taste testing the food is better so they're not seeing what customers get the rest of the time, but it was shockingly dry and flavorless. Another reviewer said it caters to yoga moms, lol, I would agree, and can see from the positive reviews that's the case. Someone else said it's a disgrace to Mexican food and that's exactly how I described it to my husband after eating there. I do prefer Taco Bell, because it doesn't pretend to be something it's not. And it makes me sad, because I'd love to have an authentic taqueria at this location, it had so much potential!! The order: Carne Asada Super Burrito - filled with carne asada, beans, rice, sour cream, and guacamole Two super Tacos - carnitas and al pastor with avocado slices Chips with guacamole 2 drinks - soda fountain and ice tea options Burrito really hit the spot. Flavor is spot on, and really filling, since the thing weighed about a pound and a half. They have spicy salsa - green and red charred salsa - both are spicy. They have a squeeze bottle of each for easy dispensing. I preferred to squeeze these in a plastic cup for dipping. Everything was super fresh and made right in front of you. The wife and I ordered a couple breakfast burritos that were huge but boring as hell and as bland as you can get. I ordered a carnitas breakfast burrito that was "peppered" ever so slightly with pcs of meat and a minimal amount of cheese. I felt the scrambled eggs were something you might get served in the military or god forbid if you were incarcerated. The wife got a vegetable breakfast burrito and left half.
