Our new favorite Mexican restaurant in the greater Sac area, will definitely be returning here. The guac was so good and so large, it's just pure avocado heaven. The steak and enchiladas were also good, the mole on top of the enchiladas was very sweet though if you are expecting savory. 100% my favorite rice and beans side I've had at any Mexican restaurant, the black beans are seasoned exceptionally and the cilantro rice was really tasty. We made reservations at Zócalo after a day out on the water at Folsom Lake, and everyone was ready for a meal. We were delighted by the huge venue. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with impressive lamps and is super clean. They offer plenty of food choices, and the staff was friendly and attentive. They also provide a rare complimentary serving of chips, beans, and salsa, which was excellent. Our party of seven thoroughly enjoyed our plates; every meal was superb. Zocalo Folsom - one of the 4 locations in the Sacramento area. Located in the Broadstone Plaza complex with plenty of parking available. This location is huge with options for indoor or outdoor dining. This restaurant is beautifully and carefully decorated with lots of character to it. From the hostess to the server, we felt very welcomed and well taken cared of. Came in on a Friday afternoon for happy hour which runs from 3:00 - 6:00pm Mon-Fri. Which I believe is a good happy hour place. Got here at around 3:30pm and was seated right away. For Happy Hour, pricing was reasonable contrary to what other diners have said. Looking at the regular menu, it is indeed pricey. For this happy hour, we ordered Blackberry Margarita and Maiz Mescalita for drinks. The cocktails were as good as I wanted it to be and they were not stingy with the amount of alcohol on it. When you think of HH - you think lower prices, crappy drinks and food but not here. For food, we ordered Baja Fish Tacos, Zoca Quesadilla and Ceviche de Guaymas. They do serve complimentary warm tortilla chips with salsa mesa and black bean dip. Never been to any of the four Zócalos in the Sac area before. Since we had a later event in Folsom, we decided to make our drive worth it and have a few Happy Hour bites and booze here. Glad we did! Arrived at 4pm on a Friday (HH is 3-6 M-F) with plenty of parking slots and seats to choose from. Happy Hour wasn't limited to the a specific section like some places. Ronni and another server came immediately with complimentary warm tortilla chips, salsa mesa and black bean dip as soon as we were sat. We had dip refills arrive as fast when they noticed our almost empty dishes. I had the Maīz Mezcalita while my wife got the Blackberry Margarita. Fantastic cocktails with the right balance of sweet & strong. Our apps were (arranged best to good) Baja Fish Tacos, Zoca Quesadilla and Ceviche de Guaymas. Great service and awesome atmosphere. I came here on a whim for Mother's Day. It exceeded my expectations! Food: Initially I thought they had eggs benedict. They didn't.... But they had sooo many other good options. I knew I'd get full quickly. So, I appreciated they had a half French toast option. The guacamole was amazing! So creamy. The salsa was great too. Was not too smokey or spicy (just right). We also got their version of steak and eggs as well as pancakes. The pancakes (omg) melt in your mouth . (Note this was a holiday so may not apply during every visit) I was really surprised to get a complimentary mimosa and mini cake (forgot the name). They actually gave each of us our own a mini cake. My boyfriend and I stopped by Zócalo in Folsom for lunch and had a really great experience. They had their brunch menu out, which looked very good. We decided shared the salmon bowl on the regular menu and it was so so good. I really loved the pickled cabbage and my boyfriend, who is normally a picky eater also loved the bowl. It was a great size for sharing an early lunch. Everything tasted really fresh and the flavors worked so well together. It's definitely something I would order again. The best part of the visit was our server, Luke. He was extremely kind to both of us from the beginning and gave amazing service the entire time. He checked in on us without being overbearing and made the experience feel really welcoming. At one point he even brought us a free appetizer pastry, which was such a nice surprise and it was delicious. He even offered to get us more, complementary! We unfortunately had to decline due to being so full from our delicious meal! Everyone else on the staff who helped us was also very friendly. The team there created a positive environment, and the restaurant itself is beautiful and comfortable. It felt like a great place to sit, relax, and enjoy lunch together. One thing to note is that it's a little on the pricier side. Most of the menu items were around $20-$30. That said, the quality of the food and the level of service was definitely worth it. This time we took a relative from out of town to try out one of our favorite Mexican restaurants. She loved it. The atmosphere as usual was upbeat, fun and the service always accommodating and very friendly. We never feel pushed or rushed. The wonderful chips and salsa came out right away, with the bean dip. Full of freshness and ingredients that all worked so well together. The portions are always large and easy enough to bring some home depending on hungry you are at the time. So, overall, as usual a really fine meal. These folks know Mexican food (American style at least) and know how to run a restaurant. I visited the rest room and was intrigued to see the communal lavatory wash basins outside the rest rooms, yet so tastefully done too. Plus you don't need to open a door using the handle after washing your hands. Think about it. I get tired of opening the rest room door to leave after washing my hands using a paper towel, If available, and then attempting to toss it into the trash can while holding the door open with my foot, wherever that can might be! We were seated right away but upon seating, the hostess informed us that there was another party arriving to our table at 7. It did not feel great to hear that before we were even seated to start our meal. The place has warm ambiance but didn't feel as warm and welcoming as the Sacramento location (possibly due to the interaction with the hostess). The service and wait staff was prompt, warm and friendly. We received our drinks and food in a rushed manner (not great for dinner with friends). I highly recommend their Tacos de Cuzuela with sautéed chicken and chorizo, onion, mushroom, Jack cheese and chipotle salsa. Served with the house made tortillas. It is mouthwatering delicious. It was our first time at Zocalo. We walked through the doors and were taken to the outside patio. The place was lovely, and thank goodness the TV on the patio was off so that we could have a normal conversation. The waitress came, and my friend had a question about the menu. Since the waitress had a two-way radio, she answered right away. I became enamored of Mexican wine after a trip to Baja, and lo and behold, this menu had two red Mexican wines by the glass. I was impressed, and ended up with the delicious red blend. The menu featured a Mole from Puebla, and I didn't need to look at the fish tacos or the burrito bowl -- according to my wife and friend, they were both delicious. I really liked that the mole enchiladas came in a reasonable portion, along with black beans and cilantro-lime rice. After dinner, I felt satisfied rather than stuffed, like I do at most Mexican restaurants. Outside of Mexico, this was one of the best Mexican dinners I have eaten. Before I sign off, I must make one suggestion. Shouldn't the staff be singing Feliz Cumpleaños rather than Happy Birthday? read more

Being that my wife and I just moved to Folsom, we were interested in finding some great Mexican Food in the area. In driving around last night when we were out running errands, this place stuck out and my wife suggested that we go here. When the waiter came to our table with 2 glasses of water, chips, bean dip and salsa we were asked if we knew what we wanted to eat and we explained that we just moved to the area and we were new to the restaurant so we needed time to look over the menu. Our waiter Luke came back the 2nd time to check on us and we had asked for some Esquites as an appetizer. After the appetizer came to us I ordered the Fish Tacos (3 of them), my wife ordered a Taco Salad with Beef. The bean dip for the chips & salsa was good, a little spicy, my Fish Tacos were very tasty with the cabbage slaw, and my wife really enjoyed the Taco Salad. This being the first place we visited, let me tell you.. The price was very worth it, the food was very delicious and the professionalism and the friendliness of our Waiter & Staff was incredible. Most of us got the enchiladas which have 3 sauce options and come with black beans and rice but for starters we got Aguachile and Queso fundido. We also got the blackberry & mango margaritas (mango was the best!!!). Our server was also very nice, gave recommendations, and was very patient since we were such a big group! This was our third time trying a restaurant that I have loved in Roseville and Fair Oaks. The food is def better... Ceviche with fish: 9/10. Too much lime and not t enough spice. But fish with cucumber and radish (instead of onion) was delicious. Rellenos (no pork): 10/10. Perfectly cooked al dente poblano, lots of cheese and a light cornmeal crispy coating. Would order again! Steak Tacos: 7/10. Steak was well flavored but didn't expect it to be ground up and the potatoes lacked flavor. Cilantro rice with beans - delicious!! But the service is spotty: 7/10. Appetizer brought with no plates. People coming by but not always doing what they could like removing dishes or asking about to go boxes. Speaking of which...I don't know why restaurants want to dish up MY leftovers!! Please stop doing that. You don't do it the way I want it packaged and it's just weird. It was a date night adventure night and for my pick I wanted to try something new. A friend had tried the downtown location and highly recommended it. We arrived and were sat rather fast, with our choice of outside; to enjoy the weather, under a covered patio opposed to inside, but let me tell you both the exterior & interior had such charming vibes! I got the three taco plate opting for the steak, shrimp and carnitas tacos with the cilantro rice and black beans. All of my tacos had so much flavor and were made using fresh ingredients. The hand made tortilla taco shells were absolutely phenomenal. We got a Paloma Clasica and Spicy Margarita, both of our drinks were tasty with plenty of alcohol. The staff were super friendly and made suggestions on appetizers & drinks that paired well with each other. The only tip I have is if guacamole is left and you want to take it home, do so as they will collect it with the salsa and cheese that they bring initially. I've been to the location in downtown Sacramento years ago and remember the food being so bland but came to this Folsom location recently and the food did not disappoint. Ordered the HH quesadilla which was great, don't think it was your typical cheese quesadilla with just cheese and a tortilla. They kick it up a notch and with sauces, onions cheese, just all around good flavors. It does come with a side a beans, which I appreciated. I had the carnitas tacos and shrimp tacos, again from their HH menu. Again loving all the flavors on both tacos. Carnitas were not dry and love the shrimp with the added pineapple some cabbage and sauce! Delish. And grown to the complimentary chips, salsa and bean dip, just wonderful. Do not skip on dessert and get the churros with cream!!! Do keep in mind, if you haven't been to this place before it is a more upscale Mexican dining, meaning food prices are a bit higher than what you would typically expect like at a taqueria. Zocalo has a shared parking lot with plenty of spots to park at. They do seem pretty busy for dinner service on a weekday but fortunately we were able to walk in without a reservation. We did have to stand awkwardly in the center before a staff noticed us to get seated. Besides that, the interior of Zocalo looks amazing especially with the glass chandelier and aesthetic wall art that makes you in awe. Onto the food review, we received free chips and salsa and black beans with cotija cheese. The black bean dip had a kick and the salsa was good. The chips are very big making it a bit hard to eat so you gotta take some time to snap them all. I got the 3 taco plate for $22. The garlic adobo shrimp taco was decent. There was plenty of shrimp but the overall taste didn't match what I expected of it. The carnitas was juicy with plenty of meat for a single taco but the flavor felt one dimensional. The Baja fish taco was my favorite out of the 3 as the fish had a slight crispy texture paired with the chipotle aioli sauce (I think). The salsa that was added to the top made each bite refreshing as well. Overall, it looked like Zocalo was lacking staff. My partner and I didn't get a water refill until the end of our meal. Ended up being less than that as a few large parties left and opened up some tables perhaps. When a table was ready, we kindly asked for a high-chair. We had to flag down a completely different server for one. They then brought over a basket of chips with a bean dip and salsa. Ordered a couple of beverages. One Mango Fresco margarita with a chamoy and Tajin rim and one Paisa Sour. Both beverages had nice pours. We ordered food. I got the 2 enchiladas with the mole and green sauce. The mole is labeled as "Michelin-guide recognized" on the menu. This had to be the blandest mole I've had. The consistency was also very runny. The green sauce enchilada that I ordered? No idea as they gave me red. And the red was whatever in flavor. The chicken inside was dry as well. Similar response to the other food orders. The 3-taco plate, the tortilla was just falling apart. The green rice and beans as sides? Took one bite and left the entirety of that separate plate completely alone. No flavor, not good. The service was very odd. Our server was dry and off-putting. Almost as if she did not seem to enjoy serving us up until the check was to be ran. Disliked their job? Who knows. Disliked us as a table? Maybe because that demeanor was highly different (open and cheerful) with the other tables next to us. Why the two stars? One for the bean dip and salsa that came with the chips. Food is mediocre.
