I always crave for a good gyro and you can't beat the quality in Astoria. Greek community and a chain version with an assortment of combos and fun sides. Quality gyros and generous portioned too. What I like about this place is they do it the authentic way with cramming in fries into the gyro. The beef strips are not as salty as most places serving the gyros. Also a great lunch special and happy hour meal deals. Service is very attentive and they were very nice about guiding a first timer like me to this establishment. The portion of fries was huge and they were pretty good, but the gyro was tasteless, there wasn't much chicken or salad inside and only a skimpy smear of tzatziki and the gyro was bulked out with yet more fries. Maybe the fact that there was only one other table occupied should have been an indication? Maybe it's better at night than at lunch? Maybe the lunch special isn't the way to go? Absolutely Horrible Experience - Avoid at All Costs! We had one of the worst dining experiences ever at this so-called "family-owned" establishment - but there is nothing family-oriented about it. The person working the register was unbelievably rude and clearly has no idea how to speak to customers. We had a simple question about the menu, and instead of helping us out, they gave us major attitude and acted like we were an inconvenience just for asking. When we ended up with the wrong order - surprise, surprise - we asked for a refund. Not only was the request flat-out refused, but the whole interaction was hostile and dismissive. No effort to make it right, no apology, just more aggravation. This place might be family-run, but guests are not treated like family. They have lost long time customers. We will never eat here again, and we'll be sure to warn others to stay far away. What a shame. read more

Prep was a bit haphazard (ingredients not spread somewhat evenly through the sandwich), the halloumi needed to have been charred more (it retained its water-logged texture and taste, indicating it was too directly-out-of-the-package vs. grilled properly), and the pita was pretty chewy. Saw the reviews to this place and found parking right nearby so decided to go this restaurant. You enter and there's a place to order and pay up front and give tip. Afterwards, you can sit anywhere either outside or inside. There's a menu that you can get from scanning a qr code or you can look up on top and there's also a huge menu (like a takeout place). While you sit they call out your name and bring it out to your table. We ordered the Saturday tray special for two people and you can also choose to get the four person tray too. They give you so much meat, you can either get fries or rice (chose rice, but they ran out), salad, pita bread and they give you tons of sauces. It's so much food that you'll definitely ask for a take away box. I suggest this if you would like to sample all different types of meat. This place was pretty popular as so many people came trickling in until it was time to close. If I'm ever in the area, I would like to go back. read more

They have multiple locations in Astoria so you can visit either one but I went to the one on Astoria Blvd. Also the locations where SVL Souvlaki positions themselves are pretty genius. LOL. Why? They are all located within close distance of a gym and train station. Especially the Astoria Blvd location. It is on the same block as CrossFit Queens and FlexFiit. Oh it is right next to FlexFiit. So if you just had that total all out in the zone workout and you are famished that chicken yeero is going to be mighty tempting. Definitely going to try out the other offerings for sure. The drawback I find with the Astoria Blvd location is that they have no paper menu and it is on the TV screens and they scroll through fast so you will be a bit overwhelmed with the offerings because you have so many choices to choose from to build your yeero, bowl, etc. read more

Located right off the Astoria Blvd train stop, SVL Souvlaki Bar, boasts some of the best Greek food the neighborhood has to offer. Highly recommend taking the train in otherwise be prepared to hunt for parking for ~20 minutes unless you get lucky. Served with a salad, pita and chipotle aioli, the Souvlaki Platter is a must. The meat is well seasoned and juicy showing a high level understanding of how Greek food should be prepared. Overall, pricing tends to sit on the higher side of the neighborhood but the portions are large leaving you barely enough room for dessert.
