I would say most the Indian food I have had in NYC has been great so my standards are a bit high. My friend and I visited on a Sunday evening with a reservation for two and were immediately seated. The interior is not that large which a few tables that serve parties of 2-4. We felt a bit rushed in taking our time to order, and then both just decided on the non veg "tasting menu" which ended up just being one thali (surprising as in my opinion as a tasting menu implies each item is being brought out one by one). This was $50 pre tax. First they then brought out papad with chutney and then samosas (after about 20 mins which was quite the wait). While the non veg tasting menu promised lamb samosas we were told those were unavailable and then provided regular samosas instead. As for the thali itself, it was well prepared with garlic naan, 4-5 main dishes, kheer (sweet rice curd dessert), pickles. The non veg thali had butter chicken and one lamb dish, but overall the small portions of all the mains I don't think justified the 10 dollar up charge over the veg tasting menu. Overall each of the dishes were quite solid. Nothing fell short of expectations, but in retrospect while it does provide a solid tasting of various North Indian dishes, I did not think it was worth the $60+ bill you end up walking out with. Would recommend trying just one dish for a much cheaper price. Solid experience for Indian food in NYC, serving traditional North Indian food, but quite a bit pricey. read more

Lamb Biryani! I went back because I was curious about the biryani at Swagat and a neighbor recommended it. I like spicy food, in general. Note, the spicy is mellowed out here. That having said, the biryani was enjoyable. The raita added more flavor. I personally loved their daal chaaval the first time I visited may be a year ago and would get that again. I must say, I had a great meal!......until about 2 hours later. Then I had some of the most violet food poisoning I've ever had.

This was hands down the worst Indian food experience I've ever had. * The samosas came out greasy with old potatoes inside -- tasted stale and unpleasant. * The vegetable curries were clearly not fresh and had zero flavor. Not spicy, not aromatic, just bland mush. * For a cuisine that's supposed to be bursting with flavor, this place managed to serve the most flavorless food imaginable. On top of that, the bill came to $80 for two people, which felt like throwing money away. Total waste. Excellent, wholly authentic South Asian cuisine. Having lived in the area (Malaysia, East Pakistan), I know this food pretty well, and I love it, although it's hard to find anywhere here that will season up to my standards. South Asian restauranteurs just can't seem to believe in Western abilities to handle hot food--in all fairness, probably based on generally confirming experience. I went to to grab dinner at Swagat in July 2023 so we could seat outside. The staff could be a bit more polite, I feel they were a bit pushy and then hard to find. However, the food is quite good and for a very reasonable price for this area. We had the SAMOSA CHAAT, LAB PASANDA, GARLIC NAAN, MANGO LASSI for two, which was perfect amount. When I first moved to the city nearly a decade ago, we used to love Swagat for a comfort food meal. I haven't been there since, but we decided to go this past week when we were back in the neighborhood. It was just as good as I remembered, plus it wasn't hard to get a reservation on somewhat-short notice. We had: ALOO PAPRI CHAT: I always enjoy this, and Swagat's is no exception. It isn't my favorite papri chat that I've ever had, but it's a great option to start your meal. PANEER TIKKA MASALA: Um, yum. The sauce was the perfect consistency, perfect amount of spice and depth, and plentiful. VINDALOO: I tried a little of this; although it was way too hot for me (some others at my table asked for this to be made REALLY hot), the flavor here was great. NAAN: Standard; delicious. GULAB JAMUN: Can't have a meal like this without some gulab jamun at the end! These are always good- no complaints. This was pretty average for Indian food. I tried the kadai paneer with garlic naan, which was alright.

Came here for lunch, they have a lunch special! We had samosas as an appetizer and chicken dishes for our meals. The naan was delicious and warm! Been waiting a month to dine here with my boyfriend who ate lunch at Swagat about a month ago and loved the food so much. Ate there yesterday and here's what happened: Keep in mind, we ate totally different things except the papadam, naan, and rice, which we shared. My food was cooked thoroughly though a bit dry and definitely not particularly hot in temperature. I didn't want to taste his food because it seemed too spicy for me. He ordered the same thing he had last time and didn't have any issues. I had the tiniest sliver of a bite. He also ate the salad, which I didn't. He got horrifically ill and was up half the night. Lots of laundry had to be done. Fortunately, I was fine. Unclear if it was the temperature of his food, some other contamination or improperly washed salad greens but whatever it was, I wouldn't wish it upon anyone. The service was excellent. The server was attentive. I particularly liked the chairs. They were curved slightly and extremely comfortable. Unfortunately, we will never come back. read more

The breads and chutneys were on point, ask for the Indian pickles (highly recommended!) for an added kick of sour, citrusy flavor. I ordered the baghare baingan as my entree. O. M. G.! Baby eggplants marinated in spices and then slow cooked in a delicious, moderately spicy coconut milk curry. The dish is a favorite of mine and this is one of the best interpretations you will find in New York. Absolute heaven. I came here with high hopes. It was cold outside and I was craving something warm and comforting. The decor that greeted us as we walked in wasn't anything super memorable, just your average narrow friendly Indian cuisine joint. We came and were seated expeditiously, and provided menus and water. We ordered our usual, chicken tikka masala/buttery chicken (we don't remember), vegetable samosas, garlic naan and Chana saag. It came out in an average amount of time. The samosa itself was very good, but it's hard to mess up fried dough. The accompanying sauces were very thin and not at all what were used to. The chicken dish, whatever it was, was not either chicken tikka masala or butter chicken, but a tomatey based dish that came with a thin sauce and chunks of chicken. It was average to below average. My Chana saag, was also very watery and not very well spiced. The saving grace of the meal was the garlic naan, it appears as though everything but the entrees were very good. The garlic naan was buttery, garlicky, and had a very strong base to protect against the onslaught of sauces I slathered. I added one star back because the waitstaff was very friendly and helpful. Swagat is located amongst the cluster of restaurants on the UWS. I stopped by on a Thursday night around seven for dinner. It was pretty busy at the restaurant but there were a few empty tables available. The interior was tiny and narrow, but the tables were very efficiently laid out. One of the customers was unintentionally blocking the door when I arrived but the server immediately took notice of my confusion and opened the door for me to get seated. We got seated at the back of the restaurant, which was nice since it was distanced out from other parties. I got the bhagare baingan and a side of naan. My dish was a whole baby egg plant simmered in spices and coconut milk. The food came out pretty fast. I quickly ripped up the naan and ate it with my dish. The naan was soft, warm and had just the right amount of crusty exterior which contrasted nicely with the doughy inside. There were four pieces of naan. The eggplant dish itself was flavorful, but probably more muted than other dishes on the menu. Portion sizes were ok, but nothing to be blown away about. I actually finished my dish rather than having to take any leftovers home! Overall it was a pleasant dining experience with top notch super super attentive staff. read more

Had a concert at the Beacon Theatre. Did a google search for Indian food nearby. Swagat was the top rated Indian. So I made a reservation. Small storefront type place. Cramped seating. You're right on top of your neighbor. In my case that was nice. Ended up meeting a fellow lawyer going to the same concert, who grew up in the next town from me and who had done the same google search looking for good Indian treats. We had a lot in common and spent the meal chatting. A Kingfisher beer and some papadum started things off nicely. For an app, I ordered a shrimp dish. Nicely cooked shrimp in a tangy sauce with curry leaves and mustard seeds. I kept the shrimp theme going for my main course. Tandoori shrimp. Cooked perfectly but a bit of a skimpy portion for the price charged. I love Indian bread so I had some onion kulcha. Naan stuffed with onions. Sadly, there were very few onion to be seen. Or eaten. No bother. Everything else was very nice. Service was efficient and friendly. While I have had better Indian in the City and near my home, I'm glad I stopped in. read more

Great lunch special! The portions are very large and satisfying, you get rice and a couple pieces of naan that is always fluffy and delicious. The classic Indian dishes are well-prepared and savory, particularly the chicken tikka masala hit the spot. If you want it *really* spicy, I think you'll have to ask, because I always find the spiciness to be more on the medium to mild side. The lamb dishes are tender, cooked perfectly. The samosa chaat was great. Very flavorful. The vegetarian Indian place next door is very popular, but Swagat is a wonderful alternative with both vegetarian and meat options. read more

We ordered items to share, which were chicken tikka masala, chicken makhani, lamb vindaloo, Cheese and spinach naan and garlic naan, vegetarian samosas, and a green salad. I was worried that the lamb would be too spicy, but it was delish over some white rice and was not too much. The only downside was that the restaurant is small, with two-person tables right next to each other. It was empty early on in the evening, but around 7 it was filled up and a bit noisy. While we had planned to eat at another popular Indian restaurant next door to Swagat, we ended up at the smaller/less crowded Swagat. I must say it was the best Indian food I have ever eaten and the setting and atmosphere was so charming. It's a delightfully small restaurant, beautiful setting and kind and polite servers. Had a tasty lunch today at Swagat. I have been eating here for 8 years, although I don't live in the neighborhood it was worth the trek. Then 6 weeks ago I was served poor quality cheap chicken, sometimes I call it rubber chicken that is often served in low price restaurants. Ok, I thought this was a one off for my favorite Indian restaurant. A week later we gave it another try--same thing. I spoke to the waiter who said the manager got a new supplier. I asked him to tell the manager he was driving customers away, and he should return to the better quality meat and chicken. After trying various Indian restaurants to supplant my favorite Swagat, (We need an Indian meal once a week), and none really pleasing me and my friend enough to inspire us to return to, we decided to give Swagat one last try. We are glad we did. We can stop our replacement search. Had chicken nelgiri (It's not on the menu so unsure of the spelling). It was delicious. Aloo gobi was very tasty. Enjoyed the Mulagatawny soup and vegetable samosas. If you, like me, had given up on Swagat, give it a try. It has returned to its former self.
