I had the samosa, lemon rice, chicken shahi korma, onion relish, mango chutny and the poori bread The samosa was very flavorful, the tamerind and culantro sauces that came with it were excellent. Not very spicy ( so many places use overwhelming amounts of spice, but not here ) Just perfect !!! The chicken korma was very good as well, a very flavorful almond cream sauce with a touch of spices, the poori was really really good I highly recommend it. Overall my first meal here was excellent. The only thing was the lemon rice was a little dry. In my opinion Swagat is much better then other indian restaurants on the upper west side. I was a regular at this place, I must've ate here nearly dozens of time for the lunch special with either take out or dine in. I have also dined here for dinner on multiple occasions, and I have tried the food here after their reopening after the outbreak. The food is okay for the price you pay (if this is the lunch special we are talking about). The quality is very inconsistent, right after the reopening it was very poor, but after what I assume the owners of the restaurant came over, it has gotten slightly better. I am disappointed. I didn't properly check my check after eating my meal because I was just having my usual (I always order two of the exact same curries) and it was a lunch special during around 12:30pm, and I was charged the full menu price. Needless to say I feel like an idiot for not checking the receipt until after I got back home. It is even more disappointing because I think the person who did this is the woman that runs the place with her husband.... I have ate food from here dozens of times, and needless to say I will not be going back after they overcharged me for my lunch. I love the flavor. Everything has tasted great! Fresh ingredients. You will see delivery men come in with all fresh vegetables on carts. That is the secret! I have eaten at many Indian restaurants. Every time I eat here I'm literally saying in my head, "OMG This is Sooo Good!!" I don't usually have that thought in other restaurants. Really enjoyed on our dinner here! We ordered -2 garlic naans -one papadom 2 lamb vindaloos The naans and papadom were incredible and the spices/seasonings were perfect. Some of the best we've tried! The lamb vindaloo was so spicy for me. To be fair, my heat tolerance is only okay so it might be only me that thinks that! But it was still delicious (accompanied with 10 glasses of water haha). The portion didn't look big at first, but there's definitely more than you think. My husband and I didn't even finish our curry portion! The price points were a little higher than other places in the city, but we thought it was worth it because the flavors and cooking was top-notch quality. Regarding the service, they were very attentive and nice. I was never without an empty glass of water - and I can guarantee you that I needed it filled MANY times with the vindaloo. Where do I begin. This is my go-to place for Indian food in NYC. It's pretty close to the subway; just generally really accessible. While the place is cozy, it can accommodate groups as well as intimate diners. Appetizers I've had include the lamb samosas and lasuni gobi, both of which I can absolutely recommend. I've had a few different dishes from here, my favorite being their Chicken Tikka Masala (which I know is typical). I've also tried their Lamb Bhuna and Rogan Josh. All dishes are cooked to perfection and taste about as authentic as I've had in terms of Indian in NYC. The tikka masala is creamy, tomato-y, and seasoned perfectly (not too spicy). The chicken they use for this dish is tender and delicious. I've even had them substitute the chicken for chunks of lamb...very tender and yummy, as well. The garlic naan is my favorite, fluffy and perfect for scooping the curry. The service here is pretty amazing as well. My glass of water was always kept full, which is something I tend to keep an eye out for when I dine in at restaurants. To some it might not be a big deal, but it's those kind if attentions that make me fall in love with a place. Overall, a wonderful, affordable Indian dining experience in the UWS. read more

But maybe that's because I just came from Chicago, where we have a big Indian population along Devon Ave. We got some naan, the Chicken Tikka Masala Curry and the Mattar Paneer, which has these cheese cubes. The paneer was tangy sweet; not sure that it is comparable to a real paneer makhni that translates to cream. I couldn't help feel that sugar had been used since it was so sweet. The chana masala was missing the masala. It was just chickpeas swimming in tomato sauce. However, it was extremely comfortable and warm after coming from the freezing cold outside. The smell inside was an instant appetite stimulant. I've tried the butter chicken, vindaloo chicken (lamb version as well), some cauliflower appetizer that was way more mouth watering than I had expected, I mean, it's cauliflower. As with all Indian restaurants, the portions looked small upon arrival. Looks can be deceiving though, as these dishes are so rich, I started feeling it after a few bites. Ordered 4 curry dishes. We found a black hair in one of the chicken currys. Complained to seamless, they gave us a credit for the one dish and apologized. The restaurant called us after seamless informed them of the credit. The restaurant offered to send us more curry, we said no and the person confused my wife by saying we would be charged again, very confusing, in the end we explained that we didn't want any more food delivered to our apartment. The mixed grill was good but not the best I've had, however I particularly liked the fish and would order just that next time. The lamb curry was amazing ! Perfect blend of spices and the meat itself was cooked so tender and delicious. A special, family owned spot in the UWS! I love coming here and have made it a regular go to when craving traditional Indian dishes. The dishes are always tasty and served fresh.
