Hired this company to do a tune up at my house through a special they were offering to the hundreds of homes in my community. What a mistake this was ! They came and "did their service" which clearly states many things they're doing but explicitly - check capacitor - check drain pump They come and leave and say all is good in the same day. About a week goes by we get this absolutely foul inhumane smell in the house. After hours of searching we find our drain pump to be not working and overflowing causing the smell some how. Next to our existing drain pump is a brand new in the box drain pump and a brand new electric meter. We call this company to ask why this was left here and why we weren't informed there was an issue. We're harshly told that there was no issue and that they didn't leave that pump there and that's not their meter and that since we have a backup pump to swap the pump ourselves as it's our problem The brand new pump wasn't ours it was left there by the tech they sent out to do the "work". We're now left with some ruined carpet and water damage mitigation rental equipment on our dime due to their mess up. Now let's fast forward another week where our AC stops working. We of course call another company to come since this company is incompetent and of course the issue is the run capacitor that they got paid to inspect completely full to the top with a mouse family. Along with the capacitor issue they said they're checking the wiring and half the wiring in the capacitor cubicle is deteriorated and the insulation is at the end of its life. Our gas furnace was not working properly last week. We are in our 80's-the house was getting cold and we were nervous. A call to Swampscott Refrigeration promptly brought the owner Jim and his assistant who assessed the problem, ordered a new part and fixed the furnace. They continue to impress...Unfortunately, the old system that I just reported on "died"...We were forced to replace, but I'm not complaining about getting 28 yrs out of the old unit. Swampscott Refig replaced it with a new heat-pump (versus standard AC compressor), connected to a smart thermostat. The system is capable of jogging from heat-pump to oil burner based on outside temp, so, we heat efficiently. Kudos to the installer who not only did a great job but took the time to speak to me about what I was trying to do and made suggestions to come-up with a more efficient system. Dave from Swampscott Refrigeration just left, after I placed an emergency service call due to an impending snowstorm and the prospect of no heat. Within one hour of the call (what!) he had diagnosed the problem and replaced the control board on my furnace. (Luckily he had the part in his truck.) It's never fun to pay an emergency fee, but I'm so glad I did and that everything worked out in the one visit. Great company with skilled technicians. Although I've desperately tried to get them to quote me a high efficiency unit for my upstairs loft, they refuse to do it. They've looked at it twice and say they simply can't squeeze it into the space I have. As disappointed as I was, I honestly really like that about them. I recently had this company install central AC in my house in Swampscott. The price they quoted me was the price I paid. They actually showed up at 8 AM on the date they promised. The technicians installing everything and drilling holes through our 100 year old ceilings were amazing. They did everything to keep the dust to a minimum, they new what they were doing working in an old house and were as polite and helpful as they could be. Just had heat pumps installed. They were great throughout the whole process. They were the least expensive of the 3 quotes I got, their customer service was helpful and responsive the whole time. I did it through MassSave which can be kind of complicated, and they helped me through the process. The actual installation was perfectly smooth. They showed up when they said they would, cleaned up after themselves, and were professional all around. Finally! After three HVAC companies, Swampscott Refrigeration fixed my central air unit and only Swampscott Refrigeration knows how to get cool air out of a 30 year old system. The short story: The summer of 2008, my A/C works good enough to get me through the hot summer months, not real cold, but not bad for a 30 year old system. The summer of 2009, my A/C is not cold enough; it helps a little, but not much. I called a guy out of the phone book and he spent time doing who knows what, charged me almost $200 and didn't accomplish much. He messed around with dampers, returns and the blower speed, but he never talked about the refrigerant. There was no real improvement. I don't remember the guy's name; he was sincere enough, just not very practical when it came to troubleshooting. Summer of 2010, the system's air is simply too warm, it's not cool at all and I'm thinking it probably needs to be recharged since it has been getting less cool each year. I saw an HVAC guy's truck around my condo complex, so I thought I would talk to him while he was onsite replacing someone's system. He visually looked at my condenser from about ten feet away and said I needed a new system. He was very interested in installing new systems; he had just done a few in the complex and wanted to keep rolling. I told him I just wanted to get another year or so out of this old system. He checked my system with his refrigerant meter, which took about 5 minutes, and said it had too much pressure. He said the system was over charged and this "could be the problem". I believe it may have had too much pressure, but I find it hard to believe that removing pressure would cause a warm blowing system to start blowing cold air, especially since no one had added refrigerant in years and the system was working just a year or two ago. He removed some pressure, charged me $100 and went back to his big job of replacing systems and didn't even check to see if I had cool air blowing. After he left, I went upstairs and sure enough, nothing but more warm air. He spent no time troubleshooting and didn't even check to see if his reducing the pressure trick did anything, which it didn't. He charged me a $100 service fee for his 10 minutes (He was already onsite at the condo complex) and didn't accomplish anything. I believe he was more interested in the big job of possibly replacing the whole system. Summer 2011, the hot weather started in June, so I tried Swampscott Refrigeration this time and they came the day after I called. The technician just looked at the 30 year old unit and said I "need a new condenser"; all three companies said that by-the-way. I told the technician that I just wanted to get through another year or so before replacing the old condenser, so he cleaned the condenser with an air hose; the unit must have had 30 years of dirt and grime in it. Then he found and repaired a leak at the service valve (caused by the 2010 pressure reducing guy, no doubt), then he recharged the system. Finally, cool air after two years! The service charge was $200, which included several cans of refrigerant. I'm happy! Seemed like HVAC basics...why is it so difficult to find competent technicians who know how to troubleshoot and repair, not just replace everything? I will stick with Swampscott Refrigeration; they got the job done the first time. My thirty year old system is blowing cool air again! read more

We finally decided to have central air put in this Summer after living with 5 window units for the past few years. I first received a quote from someone who had done work in our neighborhood recently but their review on Angie's list scared me off (quote was $8000 for 2 ton unit feeding 2nd floor bedrooms only). Then got a quote from the HVAC company that my GC uses. His quote was $10,000 for the 2nd floor only and $12,000 for the additional venting to the first floor. I happened to speak to a friend about wanting to put in AC and they informed me they had just used Swampscott Refrigeration and were very happy. I looked at reviews on Angie's List and was pleased with their track record. Jim the owner came by and was the only one who measured each room (both floors) and looked in the attic where the coil would go in. He took his time and answered all of my questions. Figured out access to the 1st floor via two of our least used closets and gave me a quote for the full job one week later - $8500. There was a bit of a delay in starting as we were in the midst of back to back heat waves in July when I put down my deposit. When our turn came up, His vent guy showed up and got to work. He was meticulous and incredibly careful to not leave any mess behind. We have cats and there were no issues with any of them getting into the attic due to doors left open. He somehow was able to get access to the entire first floor by using up space in the guest room closet and the smallest little part of my son's already small closet. I was floored with his attention to detail and how well everything came together. When it came time to put the compressor outside, Jim came by to check the location and wasn't happy with the plan to put the machine on packed dirt. He had his guys pick up rocks to make for a more permanent and level foundation at no additional cost to me even with the added time and expense of the materials for him. A few days later (electric, etc) and we had central air! I have since called Swampscott with questions that most first-time central air owners might have and they were courteous on the phone and very knowledgeable. They knew my name as soon as I mentioned our address each and every time I called - very impressive. I have recommended them to anyone who would listen since our install date. Professional, courteous, reasonably priced, flexible. Why does the heat always seem to fail on the coldest day, and the AC during a heat wave? These guys have come by late at night in winter, and after hours in summer. Today our AC stopped blowing cold air. We phoned around 8pm and were told all the workers were on their way home, but someone would be by first thing in the morning. We reminded them that we have a chronically ill family member here, and 10 minutes later, the owner was at our door. We're very grateful for this good customer service. read more

We own a cafe in Peabody MA. When we came in on a busy morning we found that our sandwich bar was running well above the temperature it should be to keep the food at a safe temperature. We called Swampscott refrigeration and left a message on their emergency line. Within 15 minutes, I received a call back. Their tech Jeff showed up by 9:30 am and immediately went to work to repair the sandwich bar. He was done working on the issue by 10:30 am. We were extremely relieved since we have very busy lunch periods and need our sandwich bar. The price charged was very reasonable. Swampscott is a class A organization that responds immediately to its customers needs and treats customers very fairly. They are honest and reputable. Swampscott came out....quoted thousands less.. but then called us back and said " let our technician come out for a look". I recently had a home install done by these guys. They sweated pipe in my living room before I noticed, and burned a spot on my hardwood floors and hid it until they left. They also neglected to insulate the coolant line, which is specified as required in the manual for the AC they installed. They have ruined my floor and now I need to insulate the coolant line which is dripping on my oil burner electrical system from condensate. Idiots. read more
