I'd heard that during tough times, big chains suffer and local businesses thrive. That was my experience last week. My nifty high efficiency dryer seemed to have snapped its belt. Its extended service warranty had (of course) expired. It cost $139 for a SEARS tech to fix it + the cost of parts. Forget that; times are tough. I looked around online for the needed parts to fix it myself. The repair seemed straightforward. Blogs and diagrams showed me. However, the SEARS Service Center in Danvers, MA that was trumpeted on the internet (and recommended by a neighbor) was closed. I mean Out of Business closed! I considered buying the needed parts online ... but suddenly there was no time for shipping. And I did not want to drive to a SEARS repair center in Natick or Randolph. Greg Rogers Appliance Center was a local hit that came up in a Google search. Just a few blocks away. I called them to see if the parts I needed were in stock and the woman on the phone was helpful, patient and knowledgeable. She quoted me a price, told me I'd get a 10% discount and pulled the parts for me immediately, since sometimes they only keep a couple in stock. I was impressed! I'd been on the phone the past hour, and getting bounced around from one disinterested SEARS employee to another. My next door neighbor gave me a lift to pick up the parts. On the way there, she said that Greg Rogers was her late husband's favorite appliance center! And the guy would have known... he had been a top appliance salesman for General Electric. So cool that his experience lived on through his widow. So cool. Side note: It makes me think that putting so much of our personal information up on the interwebs (what books we read, conferences we attended, reviews like this one!) is a wonderful thing... since everyone that comes after us will now be able to mine our life-database long after we have moved on. I knew my neighbor's late husband... but we had never discussed dryer repair! It was like he was now giving me fatherly advice *from beyond*. As I was picking up and paying for my dryer parts (a new belt and little pulley), an employee returned from a service call. The woman who had taken my call and sold me the parts told this man about the dryer I was fixing. He took me over to a dryer in his showroom and calmly explained to me the 5 or 6 steps it would take to open up my dryer and replace the belt. I could not believe my luck! I was anxious because I thought that I'd need to disconnect the gas line (yikes) to service my dryer. "No, you don't need to worry about that," the man assured me. "You'll take off the top and front." Suddenly, I had the parts I needed, and I knew the precise order of screw and panel removal for this job. "I'll give you a call if I need your help!" I told the man as I thanked him. "Nah, you'll figure it out," he said with a smile. And he was right! The next morning, a different neighbor and I had the dryer opened up, cleaned out (so much lint everywhere) and running smoothly again ... in less than 90 minutes. A follow up to this post. A friend of mine looked at the issue I earlier described and found that the rubber gasket was put in upside down!! The weep hole is on the top instead of the bottom. This is why it is not draining. Just a quick inspection by Greg Rogers would have determined this. I will never use them or recommend them. read more

A 15 year old dryer broke down and we called them. They were able to give what would end up being the proper diagnosis over the phone and came down 2 days later. Service was spectacular, professional and we had our new motor installed in less than an hour. They charge a flat rate of $120 for labor--which between that and the part was still way less than half what we'd pay for a new one. Definitely worth the call--will probably call back if we need our washer looked at. read more

These folks are the best. We have a maytag we bought in 2000 from them --it is celebrating its' 12th Birthday. The service tech was awesome. We had some seus problems with a part that cannot be bought or replaced any longer. It was frazen in the machine and could not be removed to be fixed. It looked like --time for a new washer. the service tech took the whole assembly back to his store and was able to get the irreplacable part unfrozen and fix what was inside. One of the burners on my 16 year old Kichenaid stove stopped working. There was zero gas getting to the burner. After reading the reviews and checking their website I called and scheduled a repair with Greg Rogers Co. They were busy so they scheduled me a week later which was fine as the three other burners worked fine. Michael come over today and he listened to my description of how that burner flame had been getting weaker over time and immediately knew what was up with it. He cleaned the existing burner gas valve and it now works better than ever. No expensive part needed. This is a great example of guys knowing their stuff and saving customers money. This is a family-run business that focuses mostly on repairs of major appliances but also does some sales of major appliances. I had my dishwasher and range repaired in January 2014, and I like that the company has a flat rage labor charge of $89 for the first appliance and $30 per appliance for each additional appliance repaired, so it pays to repair more than one appliance at a time when possible. I found the tech who came out to be honest, knowledgeable, and friendly, and although it took him three visits (in visit one, he determined which parts needed to be ordered, in visit two he discovered that one part he ordered wasn't the problem and that he needed to order a different part, and in visit three he completed the repairs), he got the appliances running well again at a good price. When I need another major appliance repaired, I will not hesitate to call the Greg Rogers Company. read more

When my washer started making a high pitched whining sound I started asking co-workers for referrals for good appliance repair guys. I got a number of names, got a few prices and then checked out Yelp. The facilities guy at work suggested Greg Rogers because not only does he employ his services at work but also in his own home. That was enough for me to make the call. The man who answered the phone (Greg Rogers?) was knowledgeable, pleasant and accommodating. He quoted me a flat rate of $99 for labor and said parts were additionally. That was by far the best quote I received. The repair guy showed up in the time slot (12-2pm) that he said he would and was able to repair the washer in 20 minutes. He had the part in his truck and knew exactly what the solution was. I asked his advice about my fridge, the doors are off kilter, no doubt due to uneven floors of a 100 year old house. So the doors never made a complete seal and things froze on a regular basis. For $30 additionally he was able to swap the doors to open on the alternate side thereby completely eliminating the problem. Unfortunately, the door thing is a manufacturer's defect, but this was a great $30 solution rather than buying a $500+ replacement. The only little glitch which I am more than willing to overlook is that they told me they would confirm the time they would be at my house by 7am but I had to call them at 7:30. In all, I paid $150 instead of $1500+ to repair the washer/dryer unit and the fridge. I would recommend Greg Rogers to anyone. read more

Let's just put it this way: They don't make companies like this anymore. Peter Rogers has been to my house twice to work on a dryer belt and the transmission on the washing machine. He added a spring to the washing machine and got it running properly again. He told me the transmission was gone on the bottom of the machine but this fix would let it keep running for a while. We discussed washing machines, dryers, where they are made, and, most importantly, what to look for in a quality machine. If I have a problem I just look at the Greg Rogers magnet on the fridge and call in. Professional, prompt, and priced right. This company is not what it once was when it was run by the father. I've had numerous problems with a leaky refrigerator. They were unable to repair in fact on one call they put a hole in the refrigerant system. I called another (Sears) they found the problem and repaired within one hour. There was a slight drop in the water valve and when Rogers recharged the refrigerant system they over filled it causing frost which was melting causing more leaking on the floor. I emailed SEARS and the were here next day and had parts on truck. After 50 years of our family being loyal customers it's time to say good bye. I would not recommend this company. read more

I've had 3 experiences with Greg Rogers Co in the last 10 years. My first experience was when I explained a problem I was having with my cheap washer to Mike in their shop and he told me that it wasn't worth the price of fixing it because of how much it would cost versus the quality and life expectancy of the machine. At first I thought that maybe he was being rude but based on my experiences since then, I've realized he was just being honest and giving me good advice. In my second experience, Mike came out within 48 hours(they are ALWAYS busy there) and quickly diagnosed and fixed my broken fridge. For my third experience, they went above and beyond to help me. My dryer had been acting wonky for a few months and was getting worse. I watched a few videos and thought it was probably the belt. I took apart my dryer and discovered part of the motor had broken. I called Greg Rogers and the woman in their shop was extremely accommodating finding me the right part for the job. She even called Mike to make sure that I had properly diagnosed the problem. I replaced the motor myself, went back and got another part that I needed and despite a few setbacks, I could get it to ALMOST run perfectly. There was one little noise it was still making. I called them back and explained my problem. Mike came out early the next morning just to help me finish the final step. He wanted to help me finish the job I had started and had come so close to finishing on my own. Mike and his staff are as honest as can be, do great work, know what they are doing, and genuinely care about their customers. I cannot recommend them highly enough. read more

I had a dishwasher that was not working. A worker named Mike came to my apartment on time. He even called me the morning of the appointment to remind me, plus make sure I was going to be there. I like that. He came in, got right down to business, tossed and turned a bunch of parts, and 30 minutes later the dishwasher was fixed. He said nobody is perfect, so notified me I had 90 days to call him if anything is not working (again). Rate of $129/hr is reasonable when you consider all the costs he has to pay for. Found them online and called up to Have my GE dryer repaired because it wasn't heating up. The Owner was great! Explained all of the things it could've been and showed me the parts that needed to be replaced. He didn't overcharge for what could have cost a lot more. I was quoted a $119 flat labor rate. My washer wasn't spinning. I had taken the front panel off and did a little research online and decided it was the coupling. I called Greg Rogers Co to see what it would cost to fix it. In very little time he explained that my washer didn't even have a coupling it had a belt. Sure enough there was the belt... I could see it... I know very little about washing machines. He very quickly ran through a couple tests with me over the phone explained how the pulley/belt tension worked and suggested what could be wrong. He also explained the pricing if he came out which was very reasonable. I got my flashlight, found the loose pulley and snapped it all back in place and voila! Washing machine fixed! When this old washer finally goes completely I will buy my next one from them without a doubt. read more

We purchased a Maytag washer and dryer from Greg Rogers in 1989. At that time, he told us to pick the most basic model, since there were fewer things to go wrong. Here we are 21 years later and have had service calls maybe twice to replace a worn out belt or filter. We have also purchased other appliances since and had appliances repaired. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. I only wish there were more businesses like this one. I recommended them to my neighbor who also purchased a dryer and is extremely happy. read more
