Swedecar is the only place I will go to solve my Saab problem in California! Just been in California for less than a month to relocate and try finding job opportunity. I purchased a used Saab since I had 2 Saab when I used to live in Michigan and Rhode Island. Unfortunately, the check engine light came on not long after I finalized the payment. I went to 4 different Saab "specialists to get estimate. I went all over town and googled so many places. Not only Anders provided a reasonable price, he also explained and diagnose it thoroughly. The reading of the error code from the car was throttle body, he helped me to find a use one, tested and realized it wasn't the problem. With his extensive knowledge and dedication in problem solving, he found out what was wrong and fixed it. In additions, he offered me alternative solution and avoid the more expensive route (since it is a used car). I don't know what I can ask more from a kind, honest and knowledgeable mechanics. Anders was recommended to me by friends. Glad I listened to them. Very honest and polite guy. I emailed him first about work I wanted to get done to my car. He responded pretty quick. I gave him a list of stuff that I thought was wrong and one was a big money job(head gasket). I was loosing coolant some where and I assumed it was the head gasket. He told me that the head gasket rarely blow on my model and it ended up being the water pump sealant. Saved me quite a few bucks. Most mechanics would have done the job even if it didn't need it and took your money. Anders did a great job on my car in quick timely matter. I've had Anders service my Saab since 2004. I'm from San Francisco but have trusted him with my car for that long. I worked my visits & business trips around major servicing of my Saab. I am frankly perplexed by the high ratings for Swedecar. Like most potential customers, I based my decision to patronize this business on the numerous high reviews on Yelp. I am beyond disappointed. I hope my experience with this shop and Anders is an aberration and does not undermine the otherwise stellar reviews on this shop. However I am compelled to share my experience. I took my classic Saab 900 in for a gear shifter/knob issue. The car was recently towed and the tow truck driver some how forced the gear shift selector (most likely due to the confusion due to the ignition and key location) into neutral and damaged the linkage. As a result the position of the gear selector did not match with the corresponding P R N D 1 2 indicators. I both emailed and spoke to Anders prior to coming the shop regarding the issue and explained to him that I will be driving from San Diego to his shop. Based on the complexity of the issue and the labor hours involved, I anticipated leaving the car with Anders. However when I arrived at the shop, Anders informed me that it was not feasible to keep the car overnight and instead would attempt to fix the issue that day. Initially, I did not mind because if he could fix the issue the same day, it would save me considerable time and resources due to the travel to and from San Diego to Los Angeles. In retrospect, I wished he had kept the vehicle overnight and fixed the issue properly. However after working on the vehicle for approx three hours Anders not only failed to resolve the issue but instead the issue became worse after he finished. After working on the car, my car would not start. Apparently he had moved the shifter selector in a way that now required me to manipulate the gear selector R and N to start the car. So now the car starts in Reverse which is inherently dangerous for obvious reasons. Before the car would start in Park as designed ( the issue is the safety neutral switch which prevents the car from being started if it is NOT in P or N). When I questioned him as to the issue being worse than before I brought it in, Anders reply to me was to simple toggle the gear selector between R and N and I should just learn to live with it ???????????????? Aside from the work on the car, and more importantly, Anders does not possess a polite/courteous disposition and sensibility. Perhaps it is a cultural attribute- Scandinavian emphasis on utilitarianism. At any rate, He wa rude in his responses to my inquiries regarding my vehicle, at one point telling me to go sit in his office because he could not "focus" on the task at hand ( I am a life long Saab?Volvo enthusiast and have owned and driven Saabs/Volvos since 1989 and am passionate about the brand. I have always had pleasant exchanges with numerous Saab techs in the past. Candidly, I have never been treated with such rudeness before. ) When I asked for the nearest bus line/metro station or a coffee shop or fast food place, he replied that he had "no idea." In sum, very short and curt. Needless to say, I will not be using Anders/Swedeshop in the future. read more

What can I say here... Another super happy customer. Take it as from someone who is extremely particular about their car and won't take bullshit of a job... and bullshit mechanics sadly seem to be the norm nowadays... so yup, that's me and that's my ride. It's not easy to find a mechanic who's trustworthy, won't overcharge, somebody who truly cares about your car the way you would, if you had the time or ability to do it yourself. He even noticed an additional slight problem with my tires I had and fixed it free of charge. The original job was cheaper than he even estimated, because some of it he could fix quickly without needing new parts. He had thoroughly checked out my car without me asking. Then I could chat with him about what maintenance needs to be done in the future, his opinion on it while listening to what I had to say and my thoughts. He had the exact replacement parts I wanted. (with Volvo, you do need to use OEM 95% of the time, but some little things can be better aftermarket, like brake pads for certain years and models...) As a bonus, he's a fellow nordic man. Always nice. The wait times as far as booking your appt go can be a bit long as he works alone, so you do need to plan in advance. But once there, he does his job meticulously and pretty darn quick. Overall, I saved about $500 vs doing it at a Volvo dealership and Anders did a waaaaay better job. My go to Volvo mechanic from now on! A true rarity. read more

Needless to report I trust him with my car. I added a Volvo in 2009 and he also services that too! I wish he was closer to norcal but I combine my visits for pleasure with friends and the added benefit of having my major service requirements performed by Anders. I want to add that this is a one person shop so you actually know Anders is working on your car and not handing it off to someone else. My Volvo XC70 was due for its 30,000 mile service. I've had horrible experiences with Culver City Volvo service previously (will never go back), and my more recent favorite Swedish Pro-Tech in Hermosa Beach isn't open on Saturdays (although I recommend them as well). I found Swedecar on the internet, saw that he is open on Saturdays, and called hoping to get a same day appointment. Anders was friendly on the phone and told me to come in and he would try and fit me in the same day. I showed up, he quoted me a fair price, and he serviced my car immediately. I waited for approximately 2 hours and it was done! He also found a nail in one of my tires which he patched free of charge. I highly recommend this place for Volvo servicing. Anders is very humble and equally skilled. The shop is tucked away behind some others, making it a bit difficult to find. The first time I went I was hesitant about taking my Volvo to an independent shop instead of the dealership, but Anders soothed my nerves with his knowledgeable advice and fair prices. I brought in some third party parts and he set me straight on what Volvos could handle and what wasn't going to work. Plus, he figured out something that the dealership never could, my front suspension was all hosed up. What's more he actually took me back in to the shop and showed me the parts that he replaced and explained what they do on the car. He's a one man shop so he can't afford to do a bad job. I called the 2nd shop namely Swedecar and Anders picked up the phone and answered all my questions. He's an honest mechanic from Sweden and my wife picked that up too as she reads people very well. We've done a few jobs there already for my V70 Volvo. His prices are very low as compared to other places I've taken my car to. I took my 2005 Volvo S60 to Swedecar and I will definitely be returning. Not only was Anders helpful and friendly, but a total professional. I first took my car in to have a diagnostic test run - I had gotten some extremely high repair quotes the last time it was at the dealership's service center and wanted a second opinion. I made an appointment online, and was able to get fairly quickly. After spending over an hour looking at my car, he came back with his recommendations - about a quarter of the price of the dealership's quote, plus he didn't recommend 2 of the things the dealer said needed to be fixed. I made an appointment for the following weekend to have the work completed. When I brought the car back the next weekend, he started working on it right away. After about an hour, he came in and said he felt badly that I was waiting there, and offered me his car to go someplace to pass the time. When he was done with the service, in less time than he had originally told me, he also let me know that since I had done the work together, that the price was actually lower. I did have to take it to a neighboring shop (Swedish Car Clinic - also fantastic!) to do the alignment, which Anders had let me know ahead of time he doesn't do in his shop. A+ for honesty! This is the first time I've posted to Yelp! because of such great service. I was just at another independent Swedish car repair in Hermosa Beach and they told me I had 10%/10% brake pads left. They are not open on Saturday, so in a panic I tried Anders at Swedecar. He looked at the repairs recommended and told me I had 20%/30% brake pads left, showed me a brake pad with 5% wear, and he usually recommends driving more before replacing. He also found and printed a recall notice for one of the other repairs recommended, so I would not need to pay for this repair. All were checks were done at no charge. Highly recommended! read more

I have been driving Saabs for 16 years and I know the importance of finding a good mechanic, and also sticking with that mechanic over time. After years of using dealer service, my warranty eventually ran out and I decided to look for an independent shop that would have fair prices and the personal touch. I was lucky to find Anders at Swedecar! I originally tried his shop because it was located conveniently near my work. But with time, he also earned my business and confidence. He is a true honest mechanic, which is rare in the world. Anders is available by email, which is very convenient for me when I'm unable to step away from my work to deal with a car issue. He is also very active with Saab message boards such as saabnet.com, which means he knows where to find information but also gives back free advice to the community. Anders focuses on Saab and Volvo, and will not take on a project he cannot do well. I wish he worked on other brands, because I would refer more friends to use his shop! His location is hidden in an industrial center, but inside the shop it's extremely clean and organized. I really appreciate the personal touch that you get with Anders, because he will discuss your options, take you in to look at the car up close, and always provides the used parts for you to review. This is simply not what you get at a big dealer where a few anonymous techs are working on your car on the other side of the window. One example of Anders winning my business was an air conditioner compressor that was soon to fail, which would have caused a total breakdown of my 9-3. When the dealer wanted $1,800, I took a chance and drove it up the road to Anders instead, knowing I may break down at any minute. I figured I would rather give the $1,800 to Anders, but in the end it was $1,100. I don't mind paying the prices associated with a premium car, as long as it's fair and done right the first time.
