Back in the day, Rosy would have never let 2 people sit at a table for 6. As for the food- the giant pancake was a standout. Huge and thick and yummy! Loaded with butter and syrup the entire table ate pieces of it. I had a cheeseburger and fries, it was good- not special but ok. I think the hash remains a favorite of my fellow diners. You can now get hash everyday (back in Rosy's time- it was a twice a week treat). Service is overall a bit slow- but cooking space is limited and they were busy- so it was expected. It's still a cash only business. So bring your dollars, patience, and an appetite!

I don't like creamy scrambled eggs and I don't like scrambled eggs that get that weird skin on them for cooking too long. These ones were perfect. I garbled them down. My trick is to heavily salt and pepper them THEN cut them up and mix them together to disperse the seasoning. Eggs 10/10 The French toast? Perfect. Good size slices, a ball of butter on top (thankfully enough to spread over all four triangles), and a ramekin of syrup. They were the perfect portions. I've broken a piece of floppy bacon on a table edge and shanked somebody (see prior prison comment). But here? This place? Sweetie pie, I could tie my shoes with this bacon it's so floppy. "Yep, it's the restaurant and bar right here in the hotel," I said. "Let's go!" He replied. And so we walked from our room to the bar. Once seated at the bar we ordered drinks. I went for a dry martini with one of my favorite gins -- which was properly mixed and chilled. Since we were in need of dinner too, we checked out the menu. Lots of good options. I decided to try the whitefish sandwich. It was excellent. A nice filet on a decent roll with the right amount of sauce and crunchy veggies. I'd definitely eat it again. Generic but decent fries along side of the sandwich made for a nice meal after our first day on the road. I didn't expect to find five star food in Gladstone, but tasty three star food with a properly mixed cocktail at the hotel restaurant/bar after a long drive is actually worthy of four -- so kudos to the Freshwater Tavern!

The check in process was easy and parking while minimal was adequate during my stay. They offer complimentary coffee and water when you walk in which was a nice touch. The elevator is very old and extremely slow and I found myself thinking stairs might be faster. As for the room I had heard ahead of time not to stay on the sixth floor due to reported haunting activity so I was on the fifth. Each room is supposed to have a theme but mine felt rather dull and uninspired. Unfortunately the room was dusty and I found hair in the sink from a prior guest which was off putting. The bed was comfortable and the temperature was cold when I arrived at 62 degrees which I actually liked. The view was nice but the room was very loud in the evenings. I suspect I was right below the sixth floor bar because I could hear chairs dragging and plenty of noise until about eleven or twelve at night. On the positive side the staff was kind and nobody was rude. I also tried their restaurant pub twice and it was excellent. The fish and chips cheese curds and chicken strips were all delicious and I highly recommend eating there even if you are not staying at the hotel. Overall while I appreciated the history the location and the food I would not stay here again. My three star review is more about the cleanliness issues and the constant noise from above. For two nights in a king room the total was eight hundred twenty five dollars and for that price I expected a cleaner room better upkeep and more amenities.

A hit and miss, did a review last year have five stars. Was in on Saturday and was very disappointed. Just stopped in for coffee and desert. They gave me a cup of coffee, never came back to refill. I ordered the apple dumpling with cream and rum sauce and the dumpling was served ice cold apple dumplings should never be served ice cold it should always be warmed.I can't remember the name but my daughter ordered this fancy dessert and it wound up being basically pecan ice cream with caramel sauce over the top of it.with all that being said however the waitress was a real sweetheart and we very much enjoyed having her wait on us. When we were ready to pay our bill the lady that was checking us out what I believe she's one of the owners was crabby and rude would not smile or talk to us I bought some lump of bread and asked for it to be sliced and she acted like it was in an inconvenience was not impressed at all with her demeanor. read more

The food is mediocre and bland...nothing to exciting. There is way too much stuff on the walls for a small town restaurant. It's like eating in a gift shop. Frankly, I get suspicious of places that distract you from the meal by trying to sell other things that have nothing to do with food (clocks and dolls??). I ordered the cod and 2 sides (reduced to two pieces of cod) from the same menu. at that time, NO mention was made of price changes for the sides. We think - if the menu says 3 sides included - that they should not incur an 'add-on' charge - the word INCLUDED doesn't mention additional cost. those that incur a cost should be separated from the selections that are included, and not listed mixed into the included ones. We dined, but the waiter apparently does not have much experience - and had to be asked for steak sauce, and shrimp sauce. Those normally are either offered at time of order - or brought with the steak and shrimp. When I received the bill, I was surprised that the "included sides" had been charged and the price for them changed from what shows on the menu. When I protested that isn't what the menu states - the other waiter (older and maybe more experienced), said that the owner increased prices on the add-on sides. I replied, "that isn't what the menu lists and I'm not paying for increases not listed." I consider this deceptive advertising - it would have taken only a few minutes to adjust their printed menu prices with an ink pen and be 'up front' with diners about the prices one is expected to pay. I wonder how long it will take before the prices are either inked in to be accurate or reprinted menus provided... I don't know what others think about this, or how many others actually look at the prices - - but I plan to find other places to dine out when I come to visit my cousin for a couple weeks a year. The bar two doors over has great food too - and their menu reflects the prices that are on your bill. I looked at the Jacks online menu today, May 8, and the higher prices for add-on sides shows there. The increases/changes are not reflected in the in-restaurant printed menus as of May 7. Things like that might have something to do with the rather sparse turnout last evening or it could be some other factor in play. Years ago, Jacks was always crowded when we came to visit.

It wasn't exceptional, but it wasn't disappointing either. Everything was prepared as ordered, and the meal itself was perfectly acceptable. One thing I genuinely appreciated was that they serve freshly brewed iced tea. Living much farther south, I've always preferred brewed tea over fountain tea, and it's something that's sometimes harder to find the farther north you travel. Every so often I visit Gladstone to see my mother-in-law, and I enjoy supporting locally owned restaurants whenever I can. I was looking forward to a quiet breakfast by myself with a glass of fresh brewed tea because it reminds me of sitting with my great-grandmother years ago. Unfortunately, the experience took an unexpected turn when I received my check. Before ordering, I had specifically asked the server whether the tea was freshly brewed rather than fountain tea. When she said it was, I ordered it without giving the menu another thought. After years of traveling throughout the United States and Canada for work and eating in restaurants almost daily, I simply assumed brewed iced tea refills were complimentary, as they almost always have been in my experience. It wasn't until I looked at my bill that I realized I had been charged for each refill. I had two glasses of unsweetened iced tea at $2.99 each. Seeing nearly $6 spent on tea alongside a $13 breakfast was genuine sticker shock. At that price, the beverage felt more like I was paying for a premium drink, such as a beer or a margarita, rather than iced tea. When I asked about it, I was told the restaurant has to make money and that brewed tea costs more than fountain soft drinks. That explanation didn't make sense to me because brewed coffee also receives complimentary refills. Looking at the typical costs of operating a small restaurant, brewed coffee, freshly brewed iced tea, and fountain soft drinks all appear to cost only a few dozen cents per serving once ingredients, equipment, utilities, maintenance, and labor are taken into account. While every restaurant's costs are different, the actual difference between these beverages appears to be relatively small, so I found the explanation difficult to understand. This wasn't really about the extra few dollars. It was about the surprise of discovering the charges only after the meal and the inconsistency of offering complimentary refills on brewed coffee and fountain soft drinks while charging for brewed iced tea. I appreciate that Dew Drop serves real brewed tea, and I enjoyed supporting a local restaurant. I simply hope they reconsider this policy or, at the very least, make it much more obvious to customers before they order. Had I known refills were charged at full price, I likely would have ordered something different. That small change in communication--or a change in the refill policy--would have made what was otherwise an average breakfast a much more enjoyable experience.

Instead of acknowledging the mistake, the manager immediately questioned whether the meal even included a side salad. It does. I ordered it, and it's part of the meal. He then told me the salad was $1.99 and that he could credit that amount in 8-10 business days. Since he didn't offer a salad voucher for the future I accepted. That did not sound right so I checked the menu after hanging up, where I found the salad actually costs $3.50. At that point, it wasn't about $1.50. It was about the way I was being treated. Rather than simply apologizing and making things right, I felt like the manager was being cheap and patronizing. Then I got irritated. So I decided to drive back to the restaurant again to pick up the missing salad. When I got there, the manager confronted me and said he had been "just about to process the credit", I told him he said $1.99 and that was not the price of the item, So I just came and got it. He then insisted he had told me he wasn't sure of the price. That isn't what happened. He confidently told me it was $1.99. It felt like he was trying to rewrite the conversation instead of taking responsibility. Oh his parting words were not I am sorry, it was "good thing I didn't process that credit!" Customer service 101 lesson, a good manager should know the menu, own mistakes, and focus on taking care of customers. We spent around $100 on dinner, and I wasn't looking for anything free just the item I'd already paid for or a fair credit. I expect better for the price. ($18.99 for chicken and fries.) The missing salad wasn't what prompted this review. It was the repeated attempts to avoid responsibility over a $3.50 side salad. He should have put me on hold. Looked and the menu and offered a customer focused solution. In the end, the restaurant likely lost customers over $1.50, not because of the money, but because of him. Mistakes happen everywhere. How they're handled is what people remember, and unfortunately, this experience left me feeling dismissed and irritated rather than valued.

Didn't disappoint!…read more Huge place, basically split in half with a sports bar with booths and a long bar on one side and more of a dining room on the other. I really liked the sports bar side. So many TV's! Lots of beers on tap. I had a smash burger (which comes as a double) along with waffle fries. I would highly recommend ordering a side of beer cheese dip for the fries (yum!) Food was great, bartender/server was friendly and fun. A little pricey (but it seems everything is now). Will be back for diner because I heard the ribs were good too!
