I was told the best ice cream in Denver is either Sweet Action or Little Man... after trying both, I have no doubt that Sweet Action is the best! I came here on vacation in August, on a Friday night at about 10:30 PM (a half-hour before it closes) and the line was OUT THE DOOR. This place is packed! In a good way though... the line moves quickly, and it clearly shows the popularity of the place. As for the ice cream... so many unique and tasty flavors. I had two scoops in a cup: one of them was a peanut buttery flavor, the other was a banana-based flavor, and they were both AWESOME. It's literally some of the best ice cream I've ever had! Craving ice cream, my boyfriend and I went to sweet action on a Saturday evening. The lady was friendly, but the ice cream was horrible. I got the blackberry lavender and sweet corn. The blackberry lavender was full of blackberry seeds with no blackberry taste. The sweet corn tasted like vanilla. My boyfriend got the wiskey bricke, and it tastes like cheap whiskey. The lady said it had a toffee flavor but it does not. All the ice creams were poorly made with ice pieces in it. I do not recommend coming here. One time, at Sweet Action, I got an ice cream sandwich with their vegan green tea ice cream sandwiched between two large vegan chocolate chip cookies. One would think that serving ice cream to the masses would be the best job ever...non of the employees working there seemed to enjoy their jobs. They were cold and unwelcoming, barely spoke to us. (Pun intended) If the ice cream was worth while I could over look their demeanor, but it was forgettable. Also just as some constructive criticism, the place could be cleaned up a bit and severely needs menu signage improvements. The size offerings is on a chalkboard on the wall behind a freezer and the ice cream flavors were scribbled on tiny pieces of paper by a child and stuck in the cooler. I just don't get the 4.5 stars for this place. It's in a great location on Broadway, and is probably perfect for people who stroll there after dinner or after a night of drinking. But, the ice cream just isn't as good as other places around town. I have tried 8-10 different flavors at Sweet Action. About half of them were great, and about half of them were just so-so. It's kind of hard to make bland ice cream, but somehow they do it with some of their flavors. Maybe they're going for a more delicate flavor? Maybe it's just me, but I like powerful ice cream flavors. Thing is, I even like their vanilla bean. And their salted butterscotch is delish. But their milk chocolate, hazelnut, and others are just not that great. Liks and Nuggs are both better. Way better. read more

My boyfriend and I got the triple scoop in a cup - salted butterscotch, sour cream & coffee cake, and vanilla malto. The ice cream isn't too creamy (which I like!), but if you want super creamy/milky ice cream, this may not be your place. You can check their website to see their daily flavors, but they may run out early. My boyfriend wanted the red velvet, but there was none when we got there pretty early in the afternoon. I was hoping for so much more when I came in with my family and while the ice cream was good, the people behind the counter seemed more interested in themselves in an odd way. When asked what flavor was their favorite, she responded with a curt, "I don't have a favorite," and said nothing more. We continued to try a bunch to find our favorite but we were quick to leave afterwards. The good thing is you can try as many flavors as you'd like, and they have a great selection including an After Dinner Mint which I enjoyed, and Milk Chocolate which my husband enjoyed. Until Friday, after spending two hours at emissions testing just to fail. Enter: ice cream I ordered the raspberry sorbet and vegan horchata because horchata is from God. Man, I've never had a sorbet that I enjoyed as much of this one--vibrantly flavored from the fruit, and not cloyingly sweet like may sorbets tend to be. The coconut milk or cream heavily shone through in the horchata, but it worked well in concert with the cinnamon. I hope they have this one on heavy rotation. This place is located in a hip place in Denver. There are bunch of cool shops and places to eat around here. The ice cream here is delicious and you can smell the aroma of the cones when walking by. I can now say I got some sweet action in Denver thanks to this beloved local ice cream joint. First impressions: their t-shirts (they wear and for purchase) are awesome and I would gladly trade the one on my back to sport a nifty one of theirs just so I can associate myself with this clever sweet treat store. Flavors: Range from unique to extraordinary to expected to "why are you at an ice cream store just to get a scoop of plain old vanilla?" But hey, to each their own bovine indulgence. I sampled the most delicious biscuit jam flavor that tasted like that savory/sweet breakfast blend (sans syrup) that any die-hard morning muffin craver would go nuts over, me included. I would have done a whole scoop of it, but a certain salted butterscotch had caught my eye and after one spoonful of that, I was a goner. Tasting: Go ahead, try one, try them all! I love how the staff really tries to give you a real bite with every bit and piece featured in the flavor on the tiny spoon. Cheating on your diet with Sweet Action is one thing, but cheating on your husband with Sweet Action is slightly more complicated. I try not to stray, I really do, but once I start thinking about all that dreamy delectable ice cream that tastes like it was made with an old fashioned hand crank machine on a gourmet chef's front porch on a sultry summer evening, I just can't help myself. The flavors are subtle and pure. The texture is light and creamy. And the prices? Less than $3 for a single scoop portion that is very satisfying indeed. Surely you can understand my dilemma? Don't get discouraged if the line spills out the door and onto the sidewalk. It will move relatively quickly but you'll need that time to look over the ever-changing menu. There are plenty of friendly employees working the counter offering samples, answering questions, and efficiently moving folks on through. Kudos to the fabulous owners for creating this organized and well-run establishment featuring some of the best ice cream I've ever eaten. I'd love it if my husband and I could visit Sweet Action together every time but I just can't make any promises if I happen to be in the neighborhood and he's not with me. I recognize the irony of reviewing sweet action on the day a "blizzard" is coming to town. I just don't care about it. I made Coach take me for ice cream last night and of course I wanted to try a new place in town. Like lots of people say they have really interesting flavors here. Some examples of the ones I saw last night were vegan lemongrass, saigon cinnamon, blue velvet (like red velvet cake, but blue instead) and ginger. Nick had the saigon cinnamon, which means I had half of a saigon cinnamon cone cause he likes to share with me. Okay, he doesn't really like to share, but he can't resist when I ask him oh-so-sweetly. It was really light with lots of cinnamony goodness in the flavor. I went with chocolate sorbet much to the shock and awe of Coach (and kind of myself, too) because I'm not much of a chocolate eater. I usually choose fruity candies and bubblegum flavored ice cream, but this sorbet was the kind of chocolate I like. It kind of tasted like rich, chocolate frosting that was really cold if that makes sense. It was quite dense, creamy and rich, which was a surprise considering it was sorbet. They sell tons of ice cream to go and I saw a blood orange Popsicle that peaked my interest. Next time it will be mine. The interior is pretty open and bare and there are those sweet garage doors that will open in the summertime to allow ice cream eating indoors with a touch of the outdoors. Margarita Sorbet with my old friend Jose Cuervo, Guinness with chocolate, and one with real Jamaican Rum, mon. There is a pint of the stuff in my freezer right now - the ball-n-chain looked at me like I had sprouted a new head when I walked in with a pint of ice cream of all damn things. The containers are all compostable, so the ball-n-chain and I, along with the worms in the composter, will be happy. The rotation changes often so don't expect your favorite to be there every time. But that is cool, it leaves more room for exploring new taste sensations. Anyhoot, I was treated to a visit through Sweet Action while in tow with the lovely Laura L. It was a hoooooooooot and muggy day in Denver, so congealed dairy product seemed like just the thing to snap me out of my blistering funk. Not only do these guys have the best ice cream name on the planet, they also have some of the tastiest and most creative frozen confections around. In addition to the usual flavors, they had seasonal treats like brown sugar banana, orange cardamom sorbet, Colorado peach, and my favorite of the bunch: Baklava. Never before had I imagined that you could infuse my favorite Greek dessert with a scoop of artisan ice cream, but alas, they did it... and they did it well. Somehow, they managed to keep the baklava flakey and fresh, even though it was surrounded by frozen milk and sugar. Easily the best flavor of the 5 or 6 I had a chance to sample while I was at the counter. They also have really cool t-shirts. It is easily the best ice cream I've ever had. To me, it tastes like the really good homemade stuff. It's the epitome of creamy - there are no ice crystals stuck in there to mess with the perfectly smooth texture. It's not brick hard either so you don't have to wait those agonizing minutes till you can work your spoon in. I've stopped by a few times for a few pints to go and I've hung out and had a cone in the shop. There's a fella that works there that is just about the sweetest guy I think I've ever met. With so many great flavors available in the case, I felt really bad asking him to scoop me a different pint to take home. He didn't mind at all! He even gave me a sticker! In addition to the outstanding ice cream and customer service, they've earned my undying love by also being such an innovative and responsible business. They make all their ice cream with the best dairy products from Longmont, CO. The employees have even gone to visit the farm and see the cows! They are very happy cows. Sweet Action is also 100% wind powered! AND they use totally compostable products! My favorite flavors so far are the Guinness milk chocolate and the White Russian. Also very good is the Stout, Peppermint Patty, Mango Lassi and Cinnamon Churro. I plan on trying each and every one before long. My tastebuds will never be the same. I had some of their Guinness chocolate ice cream in a carryout, and went inside a couple of days later for the bestest, tastiest cone I've had in a loooong time. Margarita sherbert, made with 1800 and Cointreau, might be the most divine ice cream flavor ever to pass my lips. The flavors are ever changing, and the ice cream is perfect (not that store-bought, stick-to-your-teeth kind of pasty stuff.) You can pick up a cone or a sundae to enjoy there, or grab a popsicle, ice cream sandwich (real cookies, mmm), or pint out of the cooler; they'll even take special orders for a custom cookie/ice cream combo. The staff are friendly and cheery with the taster spoons, even in the face of the hordes that form in front of the ice cream coolers (Seriously, do you have to taste every flavor? You're slowing down my ice cream score!!) Nestled amongst various bars, liquour stores, and boutique shops on Broadway, Sweet Action is a place that will attract the die-hard creamer and a fair amount of casual passersby alike. The location is clean and inviting, with a few tables and a some bar stools that face out a giant garage-door window on to the street. Everything, from their pint containers to their tasting spoons and ice-cream cups are compostable (not just recycled or bio-degradable). They get most all their ingredients locally, and they've found the IDEAL location on south broadway, away from the chains, and right in the midst of the hipster foot-traffic that will ensure this place thrives! The other entries will rave enough about the inventive flavors that set this place apart. I loved everything I tried. Early favorites are Salted Butterscotch, and Red Bean. Like the other indy ice-cream joints in town, Its a bit pricey, and I'd love it if they tried to explore some "blue-cone" specials... something that anyone can afford. I'm thoroughly impressed by Sweet Action! Every time I go I hear of another off the wall flavor and get to sample five more. Exceptional service all the time. You can tell they really care about their customers here. And the customers feel that or else there wouldn't be a line out the door all the time. The flavors change everyday. Some similar ones offered day to day but the majority of the flavors change. I was told to try their Vegan Chocolate Ice Cream and was a bit scared, not ever trying anything Vegan before. People swear up and down by the Vegan Chocolate here. After having had the Vegan Chocolate twice now I can now say with confidence that Vegan Chocolate Ice Cream is better than normal Chocolate. The coconut milk gives this hint of coconutty (yes-I made up a word) flavor behind the chocolate that creates this silky smooth texture and wonderful mouth feel. You'll want a bucket to bring home with you, trust me on this. Other flavors include Sour Cream and Chive (baked potato ice cream - who knew it could be so tasty), Green Chile (wow the heat), Salted Butterscotch (a fan favorite), different varieties of sorbet, Peanut Butter concoctions of every kind, pecan, and they love to play around with booze, Whiskey ice cream (yummilicious). They also offer Ice Cream cakes, individually packed ice cream cookies (all made in house even the cookies), and other sweet offerings.
