It's beautiful inside! The wooden walls, the ceiling design, the beautiful flowers on the table, tiny details that add to the beauty of the restaurant. Just by the aspect, the set up with the glasses, the velvet drapery, the outdoor patio out back, it was pretty adorable inside. Great for a date, awesome for a birthday hangout, and for small groups where you want to catch up! I went in to treat a friend out for her birthday. I loved our waitress. She was helpful and approachable. We had so many questions with the interesting ingredients in the cocktails. After perusing the extensive cocktail menu, I had ordered the espresso martini. I saw that they had a pickleback cocktail that was half off as seen on the sandwich chalkboard outside (this was on a Sunday evening). For the 2nd round, I ordered a cocktail named C.R.E.A.M. which tasted like an orange creamsicle with hints of vanilla and lemon. It was sweet and delicious. I was recently able to check out Sweet Afton after many failed attempts. I really wanted to like this place. It seems they had updated their hours and menu throughout the pandemic so I was still enthusiastic about checking it out. A number of times we'd try to eat here they were closed or the place was so empty and dull we were happy to go elsewhere instead. Mondays there is live music which was an unexpected, albeit nice, surprise. It also meant that a few of the scattered empty tables are reserved as happened in my case when we finally got in. They definitely checked for vaccination cards and ID'S pretty heavily. They have a pretty nice covered back patio if outdoor dining isn't for you. Service was less than stellar. After being seated, we could have ordered a few drinks but no one came to our table. We had plenty of time for the two of us to each use the restroom while waiting. Once our server figured out we were ready he came over and took our food and drink orders. The drinks and food took a while to arrive. I started with the Monarch which was an OK cocktail. It made little impression as I remember the taste of the Syrah I had after it more than the cocktail. My company had a Bourbon neat but in the following round a different drink was chosen. We ordered the fish sandwich and the signature sweet afton burger with added items (cheese and bacon). The fish in the sandwich was good but it was sadly paired with the most basic kaiser roll. I ended up removing the bread and eating the insides on their own. The burger had none of the requested extra items and we waited quite a bit for them to arrive. No dessert is offered here, fyi. While it was good to finally experience what Sweet Afton offers, it left much to be desired--especially as we had so much time to sit waiting and pondering. Ordered: Blackberry lemonade ($8)- this was so delicious, I could have finished it in a second but I savored it slowly. Nicely sweetened but not too sweet with the right balance of lemon, blackberry and vanilla with a little fizz. A little pricey for lemonade but this isn't any average lemonade. This one feels elegant is special. It's even garnished with lemon zest. Fried chicken sandwich ($16)- really tasty! Breaded chicken (I think it was thighs), creamy Russian dressing type sauce, slaw and pickles. I think the pickles had a little heat too. The white Pullman bread was toasted and bathed in butter. What could be bad about that? Definitely not a health food but a very good choice regardless. Fries ($8)- there was a good mix of crunchy thin fries and softer plumper fries. Of course I took a picture. It was too beautiful not to. The tajin, is a wonderful touch along with the chimichurri that adorned the poached eggs on top of said toast. My daughter got the blueberry peach waffles which she devoured and couldn't get enough of. Creme fraiche and peace maple syrup is a delicious addition to the dish. We shared a small side of fries, which was more than enough for the both of us and then some. The side of malt vinegar mayo that comes along with it is a welcomed addition. I definitely think I chose a not too popular dish because I don't see any other reviews for it and that should have been my sign to get something else, but I always prefer eggs for breakfast but I'd def get something else next time. There was a small issue with getting a table, which was slightly annoying. When I arrived, I was told that there were two parties ahead of us. Not a problem. After about 15 minutes, the two parties were seated. Out of the blue, the host tells me that there was actually another party ahead of us. This made no sense because I saw only two parties of two waiting for tables, so I had no idea how the other party was next in line. Decided on sweet Afton after a late night event for some quick eats and beers. The place was really busy for a sat night and even had a live Dj playing classic hip hop hits. I got the fried chicken sandwich which I thought would have been bulkier cut kinda like a sweet chick breast but it was a more slimmed down cutlet almost similar to a schnitzel. I added bacon to mine and it was prepared on a thick almost grilled cheese toast. I can't lie as good as it was there was almost too much happening. I think if I got it again I'd tell them to not grill the bread that way due to the added slaw/ after the sandwich sat the bread did sog a bit because of the already soft buttered texture. It's tough during COVID-19... but this place clearly setup barriers between tables outdoors and provides ample precautionary measures to keep their staff safe (e.g. I was mistakenly taking a phone call inside and they politely asked me to speak outside). In the evening, they have a list of cocktails that include nifty drinks like "She's The One" (hibiscous, vodka, lemon and vnilla), "Dirty Pickle Martini" (tito's, pickle brine) and "Ruby Bartlett" (mezcal, cachaca, hibiscus, lime and watermelon). Their burger tasted great, did not come with a side but remained filling. Ordered appetizers included fried zucchini strip and popcorn chicken - served classic without getting too fancy. I absolutely adored how Sweet Afton set up their outdoor seating. The tables were separated enough to feel comfortable with plastic dividers to separate us from the other dinners. They even set up a wooden awning so the sun didn't turn me into a lobster. I ended up getting the avocado toast with bacon. Holy sh*t was this a plate made for a hungry millennial!! I have never seen more food on a plate, my eyes went so wide my friends even had to laugh at me. Bacon was extra crispy eggs were poked to perfection and the bread was toasted so perfectly. It was everything that I wanted and so much more! The avocado was doused in quite a bit of limes everything was a tiny bit sweet but with some extra salt it was perfect. My friends got chicken and biscuit as well as a fried green tomato BLT, all three of them were very happy and we had such an amazing breakfast. For drinks we did the bottomless option there was quite a few different drinks that you could pick from we obviously drink the Mamosa 's, their boozy tea as well as a few specialty cocktails just to try the whole menu. And when I say boozy brunch I mean boozy brunch, we got to such a good brunch drunk. We started with the mac and cheese and it's def not for the lactose intolerant. (sorry for you guys) It's a 4 cheese mac and the pullll you get from the amount of cheese used is insane. It does lack a little bit of a salt but it's nothing that some hot sauce couldn't fix. For the entrees, my friends got the chicken sandwich which they LOVED. However, it's SO big so you'll def be taking at least half of the sandwich home. Being a pescatarian I did like how they had different options but the only seafood option was the fish sandwich. Now it comes on a kaiser roll and the pictures from previous reviews looked so BLAND. So I suggest doing that I did which was subbing the roll for a brioche bun, adding tomato and cheese and voila -- the PERF fish sandwich. Honestly I cant wait to revisit this place over the summer. My friends and I ordered a round of drinks, consisting of the hot apple cider with bourbon and a beer. The menu is interesting. My friends and I decided to split the wings and disco gravy fries. The wings were okay, and the disco fries were just average. My friend and I ended up getting the burger which was okay. I wanted to know if they have any gluten free bread, which they do not; so I got my burger wrapped in lettuce. The burger was just okay. My other friend got the fried chicken sandwich, he opted out of the pickle and coleslaw. So It was just bread and fried chicken, no mayo or any other condiment (which was surprising). I really wanted to check out the dessert menu, but they do not have desserts! Wild, I know! The service towards the end was a bit spotty, took us a while to get someone to bring us our check. Easily my favorite brunch spot in Astoria. The food is consistently on point and their cocktails are inventive and diverse enough that there's something for everyone. There have been a couple of occasions when I've come in just for drinks but if you show up on a Sunday around 1:30/2 in a small group (2-3 ppl) they seat you pretty quickly, which is a feat in itself, and you get to stuff yourself with mimosas, bloody Mary's and giant portions of delicious food. I definitely loved the intimate vibe - it really only fit two or three small tables, so with a big enough party - then you can literally have your own private party space! So the service was great, it was definitely busy but our waiter was very attentive and made sure we were taken care of. Food was amazing!! I stopped by for an early dinner and snagged a table outside. They don't have a huge menu which made it easier to decide what to get. I went with the Fried Chicken Sandwich (~$15) and Small Hand-Cut French Fries (~$4). The Fried Chicken Sandwich includes buttermilk fried chicken, spicy coleslaw, and pickles on white Pullman bread. The Hand-Cut French Fries are a little better than your typical fries served with ketchup and malt mayo. The fried chicken sandwich was crispy, crunchy, and plentiful. The spicy coleslaw was actually not that spicy at all and the tanginess balanced the savoriness of the fried chicken. The bread was perfectly toasted and buttery. For a fried chicken sandwich, I wouldn't think to use typical white bread over a bun but it was a good try! I wish the sandwich already came with fries at the price of ~$15, but the side of fries are a must! They were crispy and addicting! The malt mayo was pretty good and I definitely recommend mixing it with the ketchup to take it to the next level. My main complaint is that it took over 20 minutes to get my order. They weren't busy at the time. There were only a couple parties, most of which had their orders already too. Other than that, it was a solid meal and definitely hit the spot.
