Sweet and Shavery is a pretty good place to grab Italian ice and go. After a lunch at crepeville a couple of friends and I wanted to get dessert so why not stop by here? Upon arrival we weren't greeted by anyone or anything. First time here and we were very confused on how this whole thing worked. The girl who was literally 3 ft away from us just stared at us for the longest while we were confused. So apparently you can choose 3 different desserts: Italian ice, frozen custard, or their parfait (which is a half and half of both) and each comes in a small (2 flavors of Italian ice), medium (3 flavors), and a large (4 flavors I think?). A medium Italian ice was enough for me so I got that. I tried the pineapple, coconut, and mango Italian ice flavors because I wanted it to be as close to a piña colada as possible. And to my surprise the Italian ice was really delicious and refreshing. The flavors made up for their customer service! Would I come back again? Probably not because it was very similar to gunthers in midtown Sacramento. But I would recommend this place to everyone else! read more

I was so happy to find that Davis opened an Italian ice shop! If you've ever been to SoCal, it's very similar to Frostbites because they sell authentic crepes too. The popular frozen custard is very sweet and creamy so it's a good combo with the Italian ice. We ordered AIRHEAD which had blue raspberry and sour apple and BIG STICK with cherry and pineapple. Both were refreshing on a hot day. Don't expect real fruit like Gunther's fruit freeze. Italian ice tends to be artificial with a lighter and softer texture. Hope you catch them on a good day when it's not as melted :) I'd come back again, they have a huge selection of flavors! read more

I saw the sign for Sweet and Shavery while I was eating at Chipotle's outdoor patio, and decided to see how this place stacked up to Gunther's in Sac. While Gunther's calls their ice/slush/sorbet "fruit freeze", S&S sources theirs from Flavor Brigade in Oakland, which calls their ice "italian ice". Gunther's uses their famous ice cream on the top while S&S tops their italian ice with frozen custard. They have a special this week for a BOGO small size ice parfaits, but I thought the size was too small (tip: the actual plastic cup base is small but they stack it up high, and its more than enough), so my friend and I each got medium sizes. They let you taste flavors like any other ice cream shop, and I ended up getting half watermelon half coconut with vanilla custard while my friend got half watermelon half blue raspberry with vanilla custard. When we went to pay we didn't know that it was only BOGO for the small size, but one of the workers that I'm assuming is the owner let us have it, which was very cool of him. All the employees were very friendly and the service was quick, which is great, because many places that just open up are too focused on logistics to worry about customer service. The taste definitely stacks up to Gunther's. Gunther's has their amazing fruit freeze going for them, while S&S italian ice is leaning more towards the icy side of taste than the actual flavor. But the custard...dat creamy taste. The creaminess of custard definitely works better than ice cream to balance the italian ice, and every spoonful of S&S was good, even after my massive burrito bomb at Chipotle. We ended up paralyzed for 10 minutes on the bench next to El Burrito after our parfaits were finished. As for individual flavors: watermelon good, coconut OK, blue raspberry was really good. The sourness of the flavor and the custard balanced each other out. I recommend getting at least one sour flavor in every parfait. So verdict: this place is a great new addition to the Davis dessert scene. A nice alternative to boba, while in my book it definitely replaces CREAM (which I never liked) and Sugar Daddies. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped in right when they first opened today. Today only, they are giving out free small parfaits (up to two flavors of Italian ice topped with either chocolate or vanilla frozen custard)! There's a flavor combination menu that lists some suggestions, and I chose the cherry Italian ice with chocolate frozen custard, and my boyfriend opted for root beer Italian ice with vanilla frozen custard. The frozen custard has the consistency of a thick soft serve ice cream, with a richer flavor... it was REALLY good (with vanilla as my favorite)! The Italian ice had the texture of a thick Icee, but both of us were dissapointed that the flavors weren't stronger. The root beer in particular was pretty bland. But it's their first day, and I have high hopes of improvement. We also decided to try the nutella, strawberry, and whipped cream crepe (normally $4.50, but $3 today only). The crepes are made fresh (fun to watch!) and you can choose between a plain or whole wheat batter. They fill it and serve it in a paper cone, which is a cute presentation, but is a bit of a challenge to eat with spoons. The crepe was very delicious... there's even an option to top it with frozen custard (which is genius)! Overall, here's the breakdown of my rating: - Italian Ice: 2.5/5 (NEEDS more flavor) - Frozen Custard: 4/5 (I loved vanilla, BF loved the chocolate) - Crepes: 4/5 (fresh, tasty, tons of filling options!) - Service: 5/5 (friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful) - Appearance: 4/5 (clean, bright, and a simple, clearly visible menu) Total: 4/5 I would definitely come back for the crepes and frozen custard (especially together!). read more

I heard about Sweet and Shavery opening and honestly, I wasn't too excited about it at first (I also made fun of the name, teehee) because I wasn't a HUUGE fan of Gunther's 50/50... so I was a little wary when I first entered the store but my goodness I was blown away! EVERYONE there was super friendly and helpful. My friend and I were completely lost and confused but they were more than willing to let us try as many samples as we wanted to (I didn't even realize until I started ordering that I had 5 mini sample spoons in my hand.. oops) and wowie honestly I love great customer service. NOT ONLY THAT but omygosh was that vanilla custard creamy... it was like butter. The softest, creamiest, richest ice cream wooowwww ima die just thinking about it... I ordered the small parfait (likened to a 50/50 at Gunthers) and I got to choose up to 2 italian ice flavors complete with heavenly vanilla on top for just $3. Kinda seemed like it was on the small side but I was really satisfied when I finished it so I'm not complaining. I ended up getting green apple and tangerine and it was the best decision of my life. THIS PLACE IS AMAAAAZING I would come here over CREAM! I hope this business really does well because it deserves it! I've been here several times and if I were to base my review off of my first experience then it would be a four star review. However, after going more than once I now know which flavors I really like and I'm now addicted. I'm not a big snow cone fan so at first I was hesitant about the italian ice since it reminded me of snow cones, considering how it also looks like ice with added flavor. The first italian ice parfait my friend and I split had chocolate ice in it and I realized I didn't like chocolate italian ice. Afterwards, I started to order their dessert crepes which are amazing with an added side of custard! I then gave italian ice another try considering how there are so many options, and now my top picks are~ 1. Strawberry Lemonade 2. Sunrise 3. Sunset 4. Orange Creamsicle 4. More to try!! Basically, aside from the first italian ice parfait that my friend and I ordered, we've found all the other italian parfaits super delicious and that chocolate ice is just not my thing but it could be for you! Italian ice is definitely not like snow cones, which I had originally thought. It is actually super fine ice in comparison (which I def. prefer) and much more enjoyable than snow cones. My friends like certain italian ice flavors more than me and vice versa, so our taste buds are not entirely the same. To sum it up, this place has 5 star worthy desserts! When I was trying to place an order, none of the employees were attentive or wanted to seem to help. There is a clear lack of management; the employees don't work together & don't seem to have a proper way of keeping track of orders. I like this place a lot! Honestly if I didn't hate spending money so much I'd come here more often, especially during the summer. Their frozen custard is amazing, and while I'm generally not a huge fan of shaved ice, their Italian Ice is also really good! Okay, I lied, I did it again, but this time I came for the crepe since I don't know of many other places that serve them. I got a strawberry-nutella crepe with custard. I was expecting it to be like the ice cream crepes they serve at some places with the custard inside, but it was a flat crepe, a few berries, and custard on top. Went here with my mom the other night and absolutely loved it. I purchased a crepe with Nutella, strawberry and bananas. This is by far the best crepe I have ever had. It was very light and fluffy and the perfect amount of sweetness without being too much. I highly recommend this place to take a break from a busy day or the ocasional sweet tooth. read more

Impressed with the large selection of flavors of Italian ice. We asked to taste one and the taste was presented in a metal spoon, very classy. On a warm night after a big meal, a refreshing dessert hit the spot. The shop itself is bright and cheerful with several tables for customers. My only issue was that the floor was really sticky, especially near the counter. The shop was empty when my little family visited on a Wednesday night. For the last week of September, I was surprised to find it empty. I was overwhelmed by all the choices on the menu. The two girls behind the counter were really helpful, but their eyes were fixed on the TV. I found that a little strange. I settled on the sunrise sundae to share. Their sundaes are different combinations of Italian ice and frozen custard - I've never had anything like it before. Ours had banana and strawberry flavored Italian ice on the bottom and vanilla frozen custard on top. What a refreshing little sweet treat for a hot day! It was gone in a couple minutes. Usually they are great! And I highly recommend their orangesicle custard/ice. However I went in there at july 25 around 5pm and there were 3 girls behind the counter. First off, I don't know why you need 3 people to do that. Secondly, one of the girls was gossiping about me to her other co-worker while I was in ear-shot. Thirdly, when I was picking up my last order to take home to my family they hardly put any custard on it and two girls were there. I have a problem. I'm not ashamed of admitting it. I'm a huge dessert fiend. The first step is admittance and there you have it. In the few years that I've gotten to spend in the Davis/Sacramento area, I've made my rounds around the dessert hotspots. Whether it be Leatherby's, Fenton's, Gunther's or the variety of frozen yogurt shops that exist, dessert is never discriminated in my book. Needless to say though, I've found my weakness. Sweet and Shavery provides an experience that I have never had before. The perfect combination of water ice and creamy custard hits the spot like no other. I've had the chance to try the crepes too and it's nice to finally have a crepe spot in town other than overpriced/overrated Crepeville. Look everyone, I can tell you how great this place is in the most elaborate way possible, but my best suggestion is to let yourself decide. No place in Davis has dessert like this and I have no issue forking over my hard-earned money to a mom-and-pop dessert shop. Next time you find yourself trying to decide where to get dessert after dinner, take you and your friends over to Sweet and Shavery. read more

I like the concept. I've never seen this elsewhere (at least not yet). It was the perfect thing to eat after walking down the street in sweltering weather. I got the Fourth of July flavor combo and it tasted like those rocket popsicles, plus the addition of a creamy frozen custard on top. I shared a medium size with the bf, and even then, it was a generous amount. Next time, I probably won't get the custard just because it was a little too rich for me, but the italian ice is really refreshing. read more

We came in hoping to salvage our date night from an awful experience over at the fucking DUMPLING HOUSE. Luckily, we were greeted right away by two lovely people behind a colorful assortment of Italian Ice. They were friendly and helpful, offering explanations and suggestions. We went with the strawberry and mango ice in a medium cup, and a "Mango Lassi," which is mango ice in between servings of frozen custard and topped with condensed milk. The prices were totally reasonable and very competitive for this area. The custard tasted more like an extra creamy and silky soft serve than the frozen custards I've had before, but still very yummy. The ice was smooth, although we didn't like the strawberry flavor very much. The interior aesthetics...a little clownish. Definitely lacking in that department. Maybe they could take some notes from C.R.E.A.M. or somewhere. I mean, the paintings are cute and all but the colors on the walls made us think we were at a five year old's birthday party. They serve frozen custard...come on. Lets make the place look like it's for adults, yes? No matter, bottom line is we thoroughly enjoyed our sweet treats and will be returning for more. read more

I'd never had frozen custard before coming here, and now I wonder why I've been living under a rock my entire life! I dont even like ice cream really, but the Italian ice enticed me to Sweet and Shavery, and now the combo of Italian ice and frozen custard will keep me coming back again and again! I ordered one of the parfait combos, Lime in the Coconut. I love this combo! Lime and coconut Italian ices, with vanilla frozen custard on top. It was even good after the last bits of it melted and I slurped it up! And dont be fooled by the cup sizes, they tower the custard on top like a huge ice cream cone. $3 for a small, and it was perfect! You can also make any combo you want with the many flavors, or just choose Italian ice or custard only. I recommend a parfait combo :) They have crepes too, but I didnt try those this visit. The staff was really friendly and helpful to a newbie. I will definitely be coming back and bringing friends. I hope this place stays successful, because it's something different from all the frozen yogurt places in Davis and I love it! read more

My friends and I were walking around downtown Davis looking for a place to get dessert. It was a little past 9PM and a lot of the other stores had closed so we stopped here at Sweet and Shavery and I'm glad we did! It was decently priced with options for Italian ice, frozen custard, or a mix of both! They also had crepes and mangonadas which we didn't get to try. I typically don't like the Italian Ice/Custard combo and usually get one or the other, but I was intrigued by the "Dole Whip", which had the pineapple italian ice & vanilla custard. My friends and I were so full from dinner that we all just wanted a taste. We got a small and it was perfect to share with a friend without it getting too sweet or overwhelming. It reminded me a lot of a place I used to go to in LA called Frostbites. When I'm in Davis, I'll definitely be back to try the other flavors! read more

This place is so yummy and refreshing!! Their custard is creamy, smooth, and delicious. The texture makes the dessert really fun to eat. And with the virtually endless combination of flavors, you'll never get bored of this place. But if you can't choose, Sweet and Shavery has an extensive menu of popular combinations like Piña Colada (pineapple + coconut cream + vanilla custard), Frozen Banana (banana + vanilla custard + chocolate sauce), or, one of my favorites, "Sunset" (mango + strawberry + vanilla custard). Their custard + Italian ice combination is refreshing and great on a hot summer day but still enjoyable even on a chilly fall or winter evening. Sweet and Shavery is also a nice place to take your family or friends when they visit Davis. Even if they're had Italian ice before, you can convince them to try it with smooth vanilla (or chocolate) custard on top. The employees have always been cheerful and helpful. Once, they made a very minor mistake by giving me the wrong flavor and immediately apologized profusely and offered to remake my order. The manager has been manning the cash register only one time I've been to Sweet and Shavery, and he was not nearly as cheerful. I hope that changes soon because one stoic person behind the counter can significantly alter the mood of the place. I'm awarding 5 stars for now. But that may change if I continue to interact with an unsmiling manager. read more

This review is based on the mangonadas only! They make their mangonadas with their italian ice. You can get it made with all mango, mango/watermelon, or mango/pineapple. I've tried all three and I think the mango/watermelon combination is the best one. It has varied a lot each time I came. The first time I came, I had to add more tajin powder to it when I got home because I didn't think it was sauced up enough. The last time I came, there was a sauce overload but I loved it. LASTLY, a huge determination of the quality of a mangonada (in my opionion) is the tamarind candy wrapped straw it comes with - I know they buy these from a store but some places have had their straws for so long that the candy on it becomes hard, flavorless, and grainy. This place had GOOD straws. Also, the last time I came, the server gave me a mini cucharita candy with it and I've seen yelp pictures where people got Pulparindo candy with it. 10/10 would recommend. It's a great twist on the traditional mangonada. read more

Sweet and Shavery serves up a mean Italian ice. If you are from the East Coast and grew up on Ritas Ice + some custard, this will bring you right back home. Sweet and Shavery serves up ~ 20 different fruity flavors that you can mix and match into different sizes, and you can match that with some vanilla custard (which is a richer type of soft serve because of egg yolks. I tried the strawberry and orange cream. both were excellent and fruity. And perfected with a dollop of custard. The parfait is a light and creamy treat. This is a great place go to for something sweet and light, especially when hot out! It seems relatively new and it is slightly hidden in the parking lot, but I'm so glad I found you! read more
