So many tea joints in this town, I didn't give this place a second look. It's been here for 7ish some odd years and never even considered that it served more than just bubble teas. Place is adorned with symbols, cartoons and slightly odd translations, many of them repeats but amusing to read while dining. We got a couple dumpling dishes and sat down. Service is odd but it works. There are touchscreens and there's also a regular cashier. "eat with love, happy wife happy life" Hope that doesn't offend you. Probably something lost in translation so relax with the sensitivity. Ambiance vibes were minimal because I think it's summer break. If it got much busier (which I'm fairly certain it will) there would be less space to move around, obviously, but I think folks would still pile in. Dumplings were tasty and one came with a dipping sauce. They appeared to have the array of umami sauces (salty-soy, sweet-chili, spicy-cock, bitter-vinegar) along with a shaker of paprika? Don't cry about the dishware. Paper bowls for everyone! I'm sure they had forks somewhere but we never saw them. "Tea won't be drunk, but the person will" HUH? Never tried those "Freshly Made Egg Waffle" things so figured, why not. Got some chocolate guys that look like oversized bubble wrap. Thought it'd be better. Thought maybe there'd be something INSIDE the bubble. Nope. Was just kinda meh. "Sorry we won't able to have discount, but you might able to get the whole store if you hit on the boss" gives off harassment vibes. Hopefully it's just lost in translation. Our families favorite place to dine in Davis! The interior is cozy and charming and food... is AMAZING! 1. Honey D House noodle soup: a must each time we come. We usually ask to skip the spam, but everything else in the soup, at least one person in it family will eat. Quail egg, fried tofu, chicken thigh, green leeks, peanuts, sliced beef, thin tofu sheets (and I'm probably missing a few ingredients!) 2. Chicken Cutlet with meat sauce over rice: if we are getting at least two items, this is for sure one of them. Excellent flavor on the peppery batter on the juicy chicken and the meat sauce and pickled veggies are an excellent combination. 3. Zha Jiang Mien: First time trying it. Two of us liked it. May get, again, next time. We usually prefer the blacker Korean style sauce, but this was pretty good, too. 4. Beef roll: think thinly sliced beef with fresh veggies rolled up in an onion pancake. Ordered the Juicy Chicken Cutlet w/ Braised Pork Rice, and it was okay. Chicken was a bit plain, cabbage could be more marinated, and the rice was good but the braised pork was a bit too salty. This small cafe is tucked on a busy Davis street along with other stores. There are few tables inside and one table for outside dining. We waited about 15 minutes until we were seated. The portion is quite generous for its price. We ordered TR1 Juicy Chicken cutlet with braised pork over rice and TR4 Popcorn chicken with braised pork over rice. Both dishes were delicious. Tiramisu came right away and I did too bc it's so high quality, real thick mascarpone and the bottom was well soaked with coffee, overall flavor was really good. $9 is a crazy price but it was very good tiramisu. Workers are very gracious and kind and I love hearing their Taiwanese mandarin. My pork rice came after 10 minutes and the portion was good for the price. Lots of rice and pork fat which was good! Taiwanese cabbage was too tough and bland for me, and I didn't like the sour veggies on the side. The egg yolk in the braised egg was just slightly uncooked which was great. I miss the location that used to be on Freeport that closed a few years ago. This location doesn't have as many dessert offerings from what I remember but the food is just as good! Very small and cute restaurant at downtown UCDavis. You need to order first before you pick a table. It is pretty traditional Taiwanese food, but the Mango drink which we got is so so. Cute clean little spot in Davis although the interior is a bit dated that really doesn't matter much to me! Their service was quick and to the point and I wonder if that is why it only has about 3.7 stars on Yelp? Cause heres the thing their food and their desserts are actually pretty bomb and well priced, I got their juicy chicken cutlets w/ braised pork over rice and although I've had better, I've only exclusively had better in the bay area which is far and often times getting the same dish in the bay costs noticably more. Oh and something interesting they do is their tea eggs are actually somewhat jammy and not chalky like in many Chinese or Taiwanese spots. Their tiramisu was a surprise, honestly it would've been perfect if it was had maybe a quarter shot more of coffee, it is not too sweet and has a strong flavor, there were just some drier bits is all. I got their roasted sencha tea latte too, nice and bitter and at 50% sweet this would probably be equivalent to 25% sweet at other places, it was good for me since I honestly don't like my teas very sweet! Overall this place is a 4.5/5 - but if you factor in the price for the taste and quantity, especially for some of the college kids around here, it's a really good deal! This type of Chinese food isn't as common in Davis so it's more busy, but if you're not into this, not worth coming back. More a place for snacks, drinks, or maybe rice plates than a meal or soup. I had lunch at Honey D on a Thursday with a friend. Everyone there, dining and working, were two generations younger than us. I was the only Caucasian in the restaurant. I took both observations that the food would be good and a great value. Right on both counts. I ordered the Combination Veggie Noodle Miso Soup. It was delicious, loaded with an abundance of ingredients; at least three types of mushrooms, a quail egg, tofu, peanuts, soe chopped pickle, lettuce or cabbage, and lots of noodles in the broth. The serving size was large and I have enough left over for two more meals. The restaurant is relatively small. One orders at the counter towards the back. The food is brought to your table. Honestly im glad we did- we got the pork chicken cutlet bowl and the black tea latte with crema 50 percent sweet as well as the tiramisu. While the tiramisu was super good, the highlight was the savory dish . I like that their tea egg also had a bit of a yolkier middle. I was starving after having woken up early to attend the Candy Cane Dog Show Cluster in Woodland and wanted something comforting for lunch. Honey D Cafe caught my eye as I've had this establishment saved to my list for the longest time and that day I was not in the mood for pho. I wanted to stay nearby as I had groups later in the afternoon. Thankfully Davis is but a stone's throw away from Woodland. Parking in Davis on the weekends is always a nightmare, but I like to park in the parking garage by the cinema and just walk to my destination. I quickly found a spot at the parking garage and headed to Honey D Cafe. I was honestly surprised by how tiny the restaurant was. You order and pay up front before taking a seat. I went with the house special noodle soup and added wood ear fungus (wood ear is one of my favorite fungi). The tables were tiny and the chairs were not the most comfortable. I decided to shrug it off as I was starving, but made a mental note to include that in this review. The workers were not very friendly, and I noticed that they were extremely busy with to-go orders (DoorDash, Hungry Panda, etc). Bags upon bags of food started to accumulate on the pickup counter as I waited for my food. My noodle soup finally arrived in a hot metal bowl, which was nice to keep the soup piping hot. I was pleased with the amount of meat, veggies, and other ingredients in my bowl, especially since with tax and tip my total for lunch amounted to $23. For the extra $1.50 I paid for my wood ear, I did get a good amount of fungus too. But this is definitely not a restaurant I'd visit weekly. The broth was delicious and soothing, and all the ingredients worked well together to create a cohesive dish. The noodles were chewy and bouncy. I was very full after and while this bowl was on the pricier side, I was satisfied with my first experience at Honey D. However, I will say that the house special noodle soup reminds me of crossing-the-bridge noodle soup and honestly is most likely Honey D's rendition of that dish. Usually the ingredients are served separately and you add them to the boiling hot broth yourself once your bowl arrives to your table, but in this case all the ingredients were already present in the broth. I've had the most delicious crossing-the-bridge noodle soup in San Jose so I know what to expect. Honey D's was fine for a quick fix, but is not traditional (and I'm not saying to directly compare their food to the actual dish). It was just something that made me wonder the more I picked apart the ingredients in my bowl (such as the peanuts, quail eggs, etc). Regardless, I was satisfied with my meal and would like to return in the near future to try some other dishes that Honey D Cafe has to offer! read more

It was still tasty but definitely seemed heavier on the salt. Couldn't taste the beefiness of the broth as much as I'd like. It was a decent size for $16 and we were extremely full afterwards. Honey D serves up some tasty Taiwanese snacks, comfort food, and desserts that's hard to find around here unless you make your way out to the bay. Honorable mentions goes to: Lamb Skewer 5/5* Juicy, nice bbq sear, packed with flavor, and slightly spicy. These were so good and snackable, shamelessly adding to my bias that all things are better on a stick. It wasn't gamey but had a very slight sweetness that let's you know you're eating lamb. My favorite out of everything. Juicy Chicken Cutlet w/Braised Pork Rice 5/5* No joke on the juicy cutlet; the chicken was so tender inside. Outside was a perfectly crunchy panko fry that I love but my hater friend, roof of the mouth, always ruin all the fun. Crunch lovers, you know what I mean. I don't like rice, but braised pork rice is the way to go! The savory, fatty meat juices of the braised pork just penetrates the rice, adding a depth of flavors. Add the tea-soaked egg and you've got yourself some homey comfort food. Chinese Beef Roll 5/5* This was a fat roll! The exterior was crispy, but you have to eat it fast because it won't stay crisp for long from the steamy insides. It was a good balance of salty sweet with slices of beef, sweet hoisin, scallions and crunchy cucumbers. Honey D House Special Noodle Soup 5/5* This tasted like someone's mom slaved inside a kitchen to make. Broth had delicious earthy flavors, and noodles tasted freshly made. Comfort food at its best. Combo Tofu Pudding 5/5* What a unique dessert. You must get this! Such an explosion of textures and refreshing ingredients to cleanse your palette. The tofu was sooo silky soft, contrasted by the chewiness of the various flavored tapioca balls, sweet red bean, and bitter-sweet herbal grass jelly. The balls were a nice surprise. They had an al dente chewiness to them to give your a jaw workout. You can tell the grass jelly was housemade with the subtle flavor and soft texture; not the overly sweet crap you get from the can. All of the ingredients tasted housemade, which is awesome. Durian Tofu Pudding Again, the tofu is my favorite. Deliciously soft, silky, and not too sweet. There is real durian on top of this and was pungent, so it isn't for the faint hearted. I remember Honey D when they used to be in Sacramento with their iconic flowerpot desserts that came with the cutest mini shovel spoons. Sadly they had moved to Davis, but at least it isn't too far out. I never tried their food before, but glad I did in Davis. Presentation and flavors are on point. I've been missing out! read more

Food (9/10) - I've yet to have a entrée miss at this place. Everything is just so good. I've tried their chili meat noodle, spicy noodle soup, and their popcorn chicken to-go. Honestly, no complaints on any of them. I do wish the chili meat noodle was a little bit spicier but you can ask if they'll make it extra spicy. They add this like spicy paste on the side that elevates the bowl as a lot. It comes at the slight cost of the characteristic umami of zha zhang mien but I honestly prefer the spiciness. This is not to say that the umami flavor is gone though so I think it elevates the dish overall! The spicy noodle is really good and I like the texture of the rice noodles. Soup is flavorful and meat slices are thin and tasty. The popcorn chicken was nice and crispy and went well with the rice. My only complaint on food was that the bubble waffle was super dry and not good. Didn't have that charactersitic crisp and would not order again. Service (9/10) - People are nice here and service is fast and efficient. The food sometimes takes a while but it's worth the wait. Also, the only other comment is that I think the table setup is a little inefficient and can sometimes lead to there being tables but not able to sit together since they split up the 2 tables. It looked and presented well. I love this because I love tofu pudding and herbal jelly. Love the homemade sweet potatoe ball and taro ball too.
