The food was great and the hostess (Lula) is as charming as she is beautiful! It was our first time there but it won't be the last!

Ate at Lula's last night. Here goes: (1) ambience: awesome. Loved the eclectic atmosphere. The movies, pictures and decor made it a unique experience. And of course the best part was Lula's singing. Unexpected treat: professional, charming and superb. (2) service. Our waitress was the owner's daughter. She was TERRIFIC.Added a personal touch. Attentive and warm. Made us feel special. (3) value. Very very reasonable. BYO really keeps the price down. Starters were fairly priced. (4) Food. The crab & avocado fritter and the Chef's "Brussels" were amazing. And the beet salad was loved by a beet lover !! The mains were fantastic! My wife and her mom adored the duck; the guys had the scallops & shrimp. Very very good. And the desserts: heaven. We had the bread pudding and the banana With Jack Daniels carmel. Both were wonderful. Tonight's dinner was near perfection. Ok, one very minor glitch: main courses came a little too quickly after the Starters. But this was a very minor issue. All in all, a memorable dining experience. Sorry to say our meal was not that great. Dined at this restaurant about 10 months ago and had the same meal this time,pork tenderloin. The pork was tough and dry. I could have licked the plate last time, it was that delicious. What happened? My nephew had the crab and shrimp over pasta. Could not taste any crab, only found 3 small shrimp and the sauce taste like it was dumped out of a jar. The mussels, onion rings and calamari were very good though. read more

Somehow mediocre food is always worst than bad food. However, this place succeeds in being both bad and mediocre. We started with the crab and avocado fritter and fried Brussel sprouts. The fritter was OK. It was light the avocado was fresh however, $9.00 for a single fritter was overpriced. The Brussel sprouts are awful they are full sized, over cooked, and drenched in paprika. So that is a big yuk when the ONLY flavor is paprika. I ordered the mojo which was a pork cutlet pounded out and so over cooked it was tough. Also, it had no sauce or flavor other than pork. The artichokes in the dish were woody as they were improperly cut. The mashed potatoes tasted good but they were almost cold. Now for the coffee and dessert both were absolutely terrible. How can coffee is completely black even after adding cream but have no flavor? The "banana fritter" was nothing more than a fried banana in some sort of coating. The "butterscotch sauce" was so thin it was like water and equally tasteless. There was so much graham cracker crumbs poured over the whole thing that it was like taking the cinnamon challenge since it was so dry as to make one gag. By the way if you want an ice tea refill it will cost you $3.00 a piece. So bring wine to mask the food. It is cheaper and I imagine drinking profusely can only improve one's opinion of the food. With regard to the dessert, I absolutely love dessert, and I am a total fat girl, no dessert left behind. However, I could not stomach this one. Avoid this place at all costs in less you have had your tastebuds damaged or removed. Finally, Regarding the service, all the servers are a bunch of teenage girls who look like rejects from the Robert Palmer video (Addicted to Love) accept not as friendly. read more

Went to Sweet Lulas for the first time. Needed a place to bring 2 clients so 4 of us all together. Arrived a little after Noon today, Wednesday. No one else in the restaurant. The hostess/waitress was very nice (Didn't catch her name.) The food was very good. I had the butternut squash ravioli and my husband had the chicken marsala. One client had the crab cake and the other had the salmon. I rarely see butternut squash on a menu, so it was a pleasant surprise. The music was quite loud and, since we were the only ones there, and we needed to talk, I asked that the music be turned down lower, which it was right away. We did not have any desert. I would definitely go there again, especially during lunchtime, as it seems from the reviews that it gets busy at night and on the weekends. It is great to have local restaurant with fresh, interesting food, instead of just a chain restaurant. Also, the prices were pretty good. Would recommend. read more

We have eaten at Lula's several times, both lunch and dinner. Overall the menu is very nice although by this time a few new dishes would be welcome. Service is generally good, really depends on your server. The worse thing about Lula's is the very poor acoustics in the dining room. When it is full it is sooo noisy that you have to shout to your dinner companions in order to be heard. Add to that the awful music that they play, certainly not dinner music and it doesn't match the taste of the mostly over 50 crowd. My advice: DO NOT go to Lula's on evenings when there is a play or concert at the Broadway Theater even though it's the most convenient place to eat due to proximity to the theater. A crowded, noisy dining room, made worse by the owners poor taste in music turned the evening into anything but a fine dining experience. Friday was my last dinner visit to Lula's, I'll only eat there at lunch time when it's nice and a quiet. read more

absolutely disgusted with the service from the brown hair girl. As a gift we revived tickets to go see a play across the street and after we had reservations and gift certificate to sweet Lula's. As the play lets out we arrive at sweet Lula's, no one was inside eating. We were the only ones. After we got seated another couple walked in and they were seated, than another couple. the second couple who entered got there drinks AND FOOD before we even placed an order..... AND we had reservations which they didn't seem to care about.... the third couple who came in after myself and the other couple got there food drinks and desert before we got our food. We got a cheeseburger, Salad, a side of asparagus and two drinks totaling 42 dollars.... I have NEVER refused to tip my server in MY LIFE, but there was NO WAY she deserved ANYTHING from me or my family.... I will Never again go to this place..... We almost got up and walked out and my wife even request McDonald over this place . read more

Went to Sweet Lula's tonight before a show at the local theater. The hostess, also the owner, was very sweet and friendly. She mentioned that her husband was the chef. The restaurant was not crowded, but took almost an hour to get our food. I ordered the crab cakes, which were mediocre. They were well done and fried. I prefer broiled with lump crab meat. I was surprised that salad did not come with the entrees, especially since most were $20+. My crab cakes came with vegetables and rice. The rice was bland, so I barely touched it. The vegetables were cooked well, not mushy at all. Another diner at the table ordered the duck and enjoyed it, but not so much the mashed potatoes. I was disappointed overall with the quality of the food for the price. Also, it was so loud in there, we were barely able to talk. The music was blaring and people yelling above it to each other. I found the place unique, especially with Lula singing, but the quality of the food for the price will not encourage me to return. Make sure you book at least two hours before the play since dining there takes awhile. read more

We have been going to this place since they opened their small little restaurant in the tea parlor. SO I guess you can say we have been pretty loyal for many years. The owners used to recognize us, welcome us, talk to us and we watched their children grow into young adults and working in the restaurant. However, like any place that starts to get too comfortable and big, looses its flair. The last time we went there, it was packed, loud and they cram you in there to where you are basically having dinner with other people. The food was ok, but it used to be great. Disappointing that people forget who helped them get to where they are today. We will try them one more time, since they have been so good for so many years, but I am hearing the word on the street is unless you are part of their "in crowd" now, you're not a customer that is wanting to come back. I scored them a 3 rather than a 1 because they used to be so good. read more

Dinner and the theater! First time at Lulas and I certainly hope it is not my last. My steak (rib eye) was cooked and served to perfection. The menu has enough choices to make everyone happy. Had reservations and were seated right away. I would not go after 5 without a reservation on the weekend especially with the Pitman Theater across the street. The appetizer of scallops and shrimp with alittle bacon and wilted spinach is my absolute favorite thing. There is an entree of duck breast with cherry sauce that I just love. You bring your own wine. I do think that the dinner salads are alittle pricy, but everything else is in line price wise. The chairs are hard wood and can get uncomfortable if you're sitting too long. read more

Ridiculously great. My wife and I eat at Lula's at least once a week. The kitchen is open so that you can watch the chef preparing your food. There is no better restaurant in Pitman, Gloucester County, or NJ for that matter. The entire menu is top shelf but definitely try the pork. No one does it better. read more

The food is absolutely wonderful, and it is my favorite spot to go. I canNOT get enough of the duck! On theater nights the service may be a bit slower, but for theater goers, they will make sure you make the show on time. Went here for the first time this week - the food was very good, some different dishes. We like when chef's experiment some and we are game for new flavors. Butternut Squash soup was very good (and we like that soup). We couldn't decide which meal to get. So we all got different meals and tried each others. All were good. Over rated, over priced and you are forced to hear the owner belt out songs at a decibel level just under that of a jack hammer or jet taking off. Four of us had reservations for 6:30 PM on a recent Saturday night. Lula was at the door but seating us was below her level so she called over one of the wait staff who was taking a table of four's order. We had to stand and wait while she returned to her primary job while Lula just stood there. We were seated, given menus, water and bread in a short period of time. Our order was taken in a less then timely manner. The soup and salads arrived rapidly and it was down hill from there. After 45 minutes, my wife's dinner came and some 20-25 minutes later mine came. The other people waited and waited and finally there's came some 30 minutes after. In the meantime, Lula was at the mike screeching in a loud voice a number of songs of the past that ended any conversation in the restaurant as well as songs inappropriate for dinner music including Me and Bobbie McGee; Lula is no Janice Joplin. Our friends are not complainers but I am. I found her after her show and asked what is going on with the kitchen that it is so unorganized. I was given a lecture on you don't know how hard the restaurant business is, my husband is the chef and that they can not afford to hire any additional help. It's not as if they just opened as they have been there at least four years. Lula started making the rounds and when she got to our table, she ignored me but concentrated on my wife and her girl friend and explaining how hard the restaurant business is and that they can not afford to hire a chef. I finally got into the conversation and said I would not be back and she said I'm the only one that has said that; pity she does not see Trip Advisor. As for the food, my wife said her duck was excellent, our friends said there's was ok and as for my broiled crab cakes, they were deep fried, one side was burnt and they were more filler then crab. Lula did offer complimentary dessert which we declined and I asked about reducing the bill. She once again offered dessert. There was also a show across the street at the Pitman theatre and for those that were there well before us, they rushed to make the show. As a point, our waitress said that the reason it took so long for the food is that another wait staff had picked up three of the four orders and gave them to another table. She had also come to the table with two orders that were not ours; in hind sight, we should have taken those two Want a great meal in Pitman for the same price, better service and better food, try Barcelona just down the street. We have been eating at Sweet Lulas since it opened, maybe 10 years ago. Sometimes it is great, sometimes not as much. One thing always stays the same. Chef Anthony treats everyone like they are a guest in his home. His wife, Louise, is warm, friendly and talented. I think it is more of a New York experience than just going out to dinner. We have eaten at this restaurant many times over the years and it is consistently excellent. The basa and the duck are two of my favorite entrees and you can't go wrong if you order the roasted brussel sprouts or the empanadas for an appetizer! And if there is a dessert special -- especially if it involves bread pudding -- order it! This restaurant was a pleasant surprise! Went there with friends, not wanting burger or pizza like so many of the other eateries in the same area. The atmosphere looked high-end but we ventured in anyway! not having a reservation, we were seated at the last open table in the back, it was a bit noisy, but right next to the kitchen where we could see everything going on. The menu was great - everything seemed delicious. The chef came to our table to offer some suggestions and answered some questions. I tried a Basa Florentine, a fish I had never heard of and it was really good, and a decent sized portion. Friends had chicken, and there was a lot of chicken on that plate! it is a BYOB place, but they do have some wine for sale by the bottle and lockers where you can store your own bottles for a later visit, which was interesting. I will definitely eat there again, it is a bit pricey, but so far, it is worth it! read more

Having heard from several people about how great this restaurant was, the four of us booked a reservation for after a show we attended in Pitman. The server was very, almost overly, attentive --- she asked us several times, the first time 5 minutes after being served, "Are you done working on that?" during the appetizer course when clearly there was a goodly amount of food left on each of the platters on our table. Be aware that the shrimp and scallops with bacon features microscopic bits of bacon such that the item should not appear in the description. Steak ordered medium was prepared blood rare and had to be returned for additional cooking. The Surf and Turf features shrimp, not lobster as is traditional. The duck was tasty and the sauce complimented the dish very well, but the lamb chops were a tad overcooked. We had made our reservations for 5 PM which was when the restaurant opened and were surprised when told that the bread pudding dessert had only 1 serving available --- the reason being that that serving was "left over from the day before and the chef didn't make anymore". The key lime pie was well-prepared; the coffee, however, was burnt. The playbill offers a coupon for $10 odff the check of dinners for four ... when we presented this, the hostess had to check on this because she had not heard of it before ... from our seats we could see a group conference that ensued in the kitchen about this. The coupon was honored.The ambiance leaves a lot to be desired --- all the menus were worse for the wear (grease stained and wrinkled); the paper over the tablecloth needs to be re-thought. We located this restaurant after deciding to go to the Broadway Pitman theater to see a comedy show. It is a recommendation from the theater so we thought we give it a try we were able to make reservations for 545 and I Shobe unit eight give it some time to visit the little town of Pitman while we waited for the doors open at 7:30. The food was very nice we both had Caesar salad's we impeccably dressed justjust the right amount of croutons that was fresh then we each have an entrée of steak my husbands was the strip keep mashed potatoes and string beans and he ate every bite I had the surf and turf the petite filet with shrimp scampi been messed potatoes and asparagus and it was also perfectly done for dessert I had a caramel bread pudding with à la mode with vanilla ice cream which was perfectly made as well.we would go again and deathly recommend it to others the service is great very timely the staff work together to cover the whole room I would recommend bringing your own bottle of wine as they are BYOB and their iced tea was good and they serve sodas as well. read more

Went to the weekday special dinner which is three courses for $20.00. I guess you get what you pay for. Had the crabcakes. They were over fired and almost black. The side dishes were cold, which was just rice with no flavoring and some veggies. Also tried the pork dinner which was not too bad, but again the sides dishes were blanned and cold. Salad consisted of some lettuce with a few carrots rings on top. Nothing special for sure. They gave us one roll that was cut in half and stale as well. Only one waitress for dinner time. We arrived around 5;30 and there were about six tables of people in the restaurant. Felt sorry for the girl so we did not complain too much about the meal. Had a good meal on a previous occasion on a weekend, but won't be going back again. If their week night specials are supposed to bring in more customers, then they have certainly failed big time. I just enjoyed awesome food, charming atmosphere and a lovely dinner experience with several friends in Pitman NJ. If you live in the tri-state area, you MUST try the newly revamped Sweet Lula's in downtown Pitman for dinner. Of course, I tried everyone's food at the table because I am a total food junky. I ordered the Basa Florentine lightly enrobed in tender bits of baby spinach. The fish is normally served with saffron rice but I preferred the mashed and our server was lovely about the requested change. My fish was perfectly cooked and the string beans and carrots that came with it were as delicious as everything else we ate that evening. The appetizers we chose were fried Brussels sprouts which were fabulous and asparagus with garlic, lemon and wine with a generous portion of shaved parmigiana on top. You simply must get the asparagus appetizer! The delicate balance of acid for sharpness and fat for mouth feel was the perfect complement to the bright green asparagus with a crisp-tender bite. Talk about perfect! Also, two of my friends tried the soup-of-the-day which was an Asian cauliflower cream soup with a strong back-of-the-tongue bite that was perfectly balanced and delicious. There were a few Prime rib specials at the table and they were extremely generous portions. The chef came out to our table in his striking red toque to greet us and I, of course, asked him what we should try. He recommended the Basa and the soup, which we ordered but also the pork, which unfortunately no one ordered - this time. I simply must go back to give it a try. Oh, I will definitely go back! One of my friends loved the lobster ravioli with creamy pesto sauce which I tasted and it was gloriously smooth and flavorful with creamy basil decadence and tender pasta. If you must get dessert (and we did), please, oh please, order the flaming bananas (just like bananas foster). It was absolutely perfect. This is something I make at home and Sweet Lula's was just as good as or even better than mine. We also had brownies and ice cream, key lime cheesecake and white chocolate creme brulee. The bananas are a must-try and the white chocolate creme brulee was to die for. Awesome food, great service and an elegant but modern and low key ambiance made for a very enjoyable evening indeed! The tall, fresh, pink kissed roses on every table added certain panache to the already classy elegance of Sweet Lula's like the perfect earrings add to any classy outfit. We finally made it to Sweet Lula's after hearing many good things. My son and I went for lunch first to try it out, and we had the crabcake sandwiches with a remoulade sauce (delish!), fries (small portion, but tasty), and peach tea, also yummy. We went back with some other family a few days later for dinner. I recommended the crabcakes to my sister, who ordered them for dinner. These were breaded, which surprised me. She said they were very good - but I didn't taste hers, so I cannot say for sure which was better. Hard to believe they could beat the ones we had for lunch though. Anyway, our favorites of the night were the shrimp and scallops appetizer, which were cooked perfectly and in a dark, flavorful, brothy sauce, and a crab and avocado fritter, which was also delicious. We got the asparagus also, which was good, but we all wished we had ordered more of the other two. The best entree of the night was a crispy duck breast with dark cherry sauce (so very, very good) and the roast pork tenderloin, but all our other food was very tasty as well. For dessert we got the bananas flambe (good), and the bread pudding the the Jack Daniels butterscotch sauce (fabulous). We want to go back and try their early bird menu on Tues., Wed., Thurs. until 6, which is a great deal for $15. Also, on the last Tuesday of every month, they have a cooking class dinner for $40 which is popular and sounds like a lot of fun. read more

I went on a Friday night based on a friendly recommendation. There were 7 in our party and we arrived at 5:30 as we were going to the Pitman Theater for a play. Our waitress was sweetly incompetent. We did not order any appetizers, just entrees. 6 received their entrée and the 7th in our party had to track down the busboy to find our waitress. Apparently she didn't notice that she had missed someone! 10 minutes later the entrée was retrieved from the wait area after sitting there. Not even an "I am sorry". Bleh. The entrees were mediocre at best, the pork tenderloin was tough, bass Florentine overly garlicky, etc. We ordered desert and coffee at 6:55 and it still had not arrived by 7:30. At that point, upon asking, our server informed us that the chefs were "too busy" to prepare the peach flambé that we ordered so we wouldn't be getting the desert! The coffee was strong and cool and the sugar bowl was filled with hard stuff as a brown liquid (coffee?) had been spilled into it sometime in the past.. By that time the dining area had filled with smoke from the open kitchen. We were there almost 2 1/2 hours just for our entrees and cold coffee. We couldn't wait to get out. Will not be going back.
