We arrived on a Friday night without reservations. The place was packed and the only seats available were at the chefs table, i.e. the bar in front of the kitchen. The service was a little slow but the food was out of this world. Watching the chef cook everything, I could see all the butter and heavy cream that went into the food, hence its deliciousness. It did seem a tad overpriced for what we got, as compared to similar establishments in the area, but it was still amazing. Between the three of us, we got a Cajun creole orange roughy, crab cakes, and chicken marsala. All tasted amazing. We also had a crab stuffed avocado frtitter for an appetizer, which was decent, nothing special. The dessert of banana fritters with ice cream was also very good. Right before our main courses came out the chef gave us a plate of oven broiled brussel sprouts coated in bread crumbs, parmesan cheese,, and bacon. They were the tastiest brussel sprouts I ever had, and a free bonus of sitting at the chefs table. I did read all the horrid reviews and this was not my first choice for dining this night, but my first two choices closed and my third choice had an hour wait and wouldn't take reservations. We were going to the pitman theater, and we arrived early and Sweet Lulas was right across the street. I was very hesitant, but we went for it and I wasn't disappointed. That being said, the whole ordeal took an hour and 45 minutes and we were almost late for the show (we had to rush through dessert and run out the door). Having a firsthand look at the process, I can definitely see how some meals sat on the order up window for too long and probably arrived at their tables cold. I also heard several waitresses reporting that one or more parts of their order were missing. So its a bit disjointed, and watching the tiny kitchen in action I can see why. The chef and owner is a perfectionist and does most everything himself. He was constantly cooking 6 different dishes at once across his 12 burner range. But if you have the time and the patience, and are a gambler knowing that there is a 25% chance your food will come out cold, and 20 minutes after everyone elses, I would say its worth it as the food, in my opinion, was delicious. I will definitely be returning back here but Im going to come at least 3 hours before the pitman theater show starts and Im making a reservation. read more

I have to say we have been to Sweet Lula's 4 or 5 times and the food was very good. Last nite was horrible and so was the owner, Lula. I ordered the surf and turf. 4 small lagistinos and a good portion of filet mignon. Grilled asparagus that I could not cut with a steak knife, let alone chew. The filet was so dry (I ordered it rare + 1 minute) and it seemed to be done right when cut into. When I mentioned it to the owner and asked her for some au-jus, they brought me a sauce that she told me was for lamb. WHY? Then told me that the cook says "next time you better order a rib steak, it has more fat." She also made the comment that we cant make you happy at all tonight, can we? RUDE By the way Lula, you have a nice small place, so when you sing turn down the volume a little. My friend said "well I guess we are done talking" Well, Lula, you were right. Guess you could't make me happy. You won't have to. Don't think we will be going back again. read more

This restaurant is fabulous. We had a surprise party here today but have eaten here many times. This is our new favorite place to eat. The couple who own it are very cool with great stories and his food is excellent. The bread pudding with jack daniels sauce and vanilla ice cream is out of this world. Way overpriced meal, and we never mind paying the price for superior fare. My cobb salad was just mediocre, I think the lettuce was out of yesterday's bag. My husband's quesadilla was actually charred on the outside and he said it tasted burned. The ice tea was either old or too strong. Celebrated my sister in laws retirement. We had a party of eight and in a mood to celebrate the occasion. The staff was so helpful. The food was just delicious. We ordered the Basa Florentine, lobster raviolis ,chicken with artichokes, crab cakes and the pork loin. We enjoyed each dish, Delicious!!! Recently had dinner there with some friends. We had a 6:00 reservation and we let then know that we had an 8:00 ceramics reservation a few doors down. The service was awful. At 7:55 there were still a few of us who were just getting our dinner. One person never even got a dinner. The owner's response was the most disturbing. Lula acted as if we did something wrong! She wasn't apologetic and never offered to make up for the poor service. Instead we were handed a bill for over $300. I tried to eat my dinner in the 5 minutes I had before we had to leave. The food was ok. My daughter and I were supposed to have vodka sauce and when we mentioned to Lula that it wasn't vodka sauce she said it was her French version. Lula was rude and nasty to us. Her behavior was the worse. I would not go to this place again and would advise everyone to do the same! read more

Just spent four fabulous days in Charleston South Carolina. Had amazing fresh seafood. Got off the plane in Philadelphia and I went directly to Sweet Lulas. Had the most fabulous meal. Better than anything in South Carolina or anywhere else. The food was mouthwatering. And the singing is better than anything on Broadway. If I could give six stars I would. I've been saturated with a happy blissfulness stomach time and time again both because of the decor and the fabulous food. read more

After growing up in Glassboro and having moved away to San Francisco then to DC, I can't tell you how surprised I was to find a restaurant of this caliber in Pitman. Our family came together for the weekend of my moms 93rd birthday on 12/3/17. My brother, his wife, my partner and myself wanted to find a good restaurant in the area but were not hopeful. I checked out yelp and decided to give Sweet Lulas a try because of the reviews. We were a little surprised that it was a BYOB place, but they did serve SJ wine, so we tried the rosé, and it was pretty good! We started off with the Brussel sprouts and Peruvian asparagus. Both were great starters. For entrees we had the Alaskan salmon, pork tenderloin & chicken artichokes. All were EXCELLENT!! This restaurant can easily compete with any of the best restaurants anywhere. Since we were one of the last tables, we were delighted to hear Lula singing with the table behind us (go there to get Lulas background) and it made the night even more memorable. I am so happy that Pitman has succeeded in keeping its charm, where Glassboro has failed miserably. All of us so thoroughly enjoyed this dinner. Brava Lula!! read more

Lunchtime with Mom, daughter and her boyfriend - quiet day with only a few tables in action. Had passed by one evening while waiting for pickup Thai Food across the street and thought it looked inviting. Nicely decorated for the holidays, our waitress sat us near the window, gave us menus and ran off. As we reviewed the menu, made our decisions, she took our drinks orders and again ran off. Didn't realize that she was the only waitress, and after watching her hustle between tables, felt bad that she was obviously juggling everything. Our food was good but pricey for the portions- I had a chicken salad with feta, my mother had the fish and chips and the kids had some wraps. Upon inspection, realized that someone has a connection to "Read Between the Lions" and there were many photos of celebrities and puppets. BYOB for those that pay $100 you can have your own locker for your wines and spirits. Might go back for dinner, but seemed to try to hard to make lunch a priority read more

Sweet Lula's offers up creative and delicious food at a reasonable price. Had the Brussels sprouts for an appetizer (surprisingly good, but not great); the duck for an entree' (EXCELLENT!! -- cooked to perfection); and the white chocolate creme brulee' for dessert (the BEST I've ever had). Other guests in my group had the fish and chips and a shrimp and scallop special (both were quite yummy). An additional appetizer of the avocado stuffed with crab-meat did not meet our expectations, the crab-meat left a little to be desired. All-in-all I would definitely recommend this restaurant!! I have had dinner here about 10 times, I will try to hit the main points here. Food is very good. Chef's Brussel Sprouts are amazing!! The atmosphere at the place is very nice. The service is really not all that great, at all. Upon entering, I'd say out of the 10 times I have been here, only twice have I ever been directly met at the door and promplty seated. All the other times I've had to wait, and wait and wait. One time, waited almost 10 minutes. And generally you have to flag someone down to seat you--this includes the owner. On nights where there is entertainment (the one owner sings, Lula), it would be fine if she would lower the volume on the sound system. The vocals are ok at best, but it does add to the atmosphere. Just lower the volume and all will be fine. Owner hubby does nice job trying the meet the patrons. Just a notch up on service, drink refills, timely food service, and as I mentioned, seating promptly and I would add another star here. read more

I love this restaurant! The food is incredible, the service is prompt and friendly, and the owners are accessible and friendly. We were greeted by a happy and outgoing hostess, given a table next to the window, and our bottle of wine was promptly opened. Our server gave great recommendations and I wound up with the surf and turf. They modified to fit my diet with ease. The timing was perfect and the meals were incredible. The portion sizes are incredibly small and the prices too high. I talked to the manager and she said they actually increased their portion sizes. My husband got a Caesar salad with chicken and was comparable to a side salad with a small sliver of chicken. Would never recommend this place. read more

4 of us dined on Saturday evening, Dec 30th, 6 pm. One out of four found their dinner satisfactory. The other 3 - pork chop was tough; chicken oscar was drowning in a very salty sauce and the crab was bad, had to be sent back in lieu of an appetizer; spinach salad was just that, a plate of spinach leaves with a few tomatoes thrown on top. Both appetizers (brussel spouts and artichokes) looked and tasted like they had been sitting under a heating lamp for a while - greasy. We think that the chef precooked a lot of the foods and just nuked them to fill an order since they were busy (everyone was trying to catch the 8pm show across the streeet.) The waitress was great. Lula was found to be just a little bit aggressive in her behavior after we asked for a table that didn't have a pole separating the diners. read more

We made reservations on a "fourth Friday night" in Pitman. Its kind of a thing that Pitman does during the summer. A lot of fun, cool stuff going on. On the fourth Friday in July, we made reservations for 7:30 PM - 6 people. We get there, the owner says that there is a $5 cover for the "band". My husband tells her that no one told us that when we made the reservations, we are not paying it. She says that some of the staff isn't telling people, but they should. She seats us and we have a somewhat decent dinner except for husband's sea bass that wasn't cooked all the way, it was slimy in the middle. We sent it back and it tasted worse and was now overcooked and rubbery, like the bottom of my sneaker. Dessert was very good. We get the bill - total is $197, we add 20% even though food wasn't fantastic and the "band" ended being two people that were awful and you couldn't carry on a conversation it was way too loud. The owner comes back about 10 minutes later and says the waitress is upset, we only tipped $13. She showed us our bill again and it had a new number - $227 circled about eight times right next to $197. It was NOT there on the first bill. I even double checked the bill before we paid it because someone asked if the gratuity was added in already because of the size of our party. So three people looked at it and I double checked it. The owner tacked on the cover after we paid. When she showed me the bill again, I told her there is no way I missed the $227 circled a bunch of times when it was RIGHT NEXT TO $197! My husband, as a small business owner himself, tried to speak with her and she was just boorish and ignorant. I will never go there again. This not good business to treat your customers in this fashion. I've never had a bill changed after I paid it. I am disgusted and will never set foot in this establishment again. read more

We did not expect the amazing experience we had tonight at Sweet Lula's! The restaurant is a family affair! The owner, Anthony Asbury wears many hats! Not only is he the chef extraordinaire, he is entertaining, has a witty sense of humor, & the most personable of any restaurant owner we have ever met! His wife is Sweet Lula! To our surprise, she sang to the patrons! What a beautiful voice! Our waitress was their daughter, Dakota. Gorgeous from the inside out! Oh, and brother works in the kitchen, too! Now for the menu! To start, we had roasted brussel sprouts with parmesan & paprika, fried calamari in the shape of onion rings. For entrees:. 1) Salmon encrusted with crab meat over pureed mash potatoes & spinach; 2) Basa fish with crabmeat over mashed potatoes and spinach, garnished with elegantly shaped shrimp. Two of us had the second dish. For dessert we had creme brulee with white chocolate & cranberry, & fried banana with vanilla ice cream! OH MY GOSH! This dining spot is more than a food experience! Sorry to say our meal was not that great. Dined at this restaurant about 10 months ago and had the same meal this time,pork tenderloin. The pork was tough and dry. I could have licked the plate last time, it was that delicious. What happened? My nephew had the crab and shrimp over pasta. Could not taste any crab, only found 3 small shrimp and the sauce taste like it was dumped out of a jar. The mussels, onion rings and calamari were very good though. read more

Wonderful little restaurant tucked away on Pitman's Broadway. Having grown up in Pitman, I never would have imagined this kind of quality and atmosphere finding a home in downtown Pitman. The restaurant had simple yet beautiful interior with friendly and accommodating staff. They had a very high quality high-chair for our 2 year old plus a small case of rubber toys that kept him entertained for a good 30 min. That, combined with Lula herself singing on the microphone, made for a truly entertaining evening for out toddler. The food was excellent; at least as good (if not better) than any boutique restaurant in Haddonfield or Philadelphia that I visited in the 4 years I lived in Philly. I had the seared tuna, perfectly done, on a delicious risotto base. The asparagus soup was also a hit amongst my table. Others in my party also raved about their crab cakes and pasta dishes. Went to Sweet Lulas for the first time. Needed a place to bring 2 clients so 4 of us all together. Arrived a little after Noon today, Wednesday. No one else in the restaurant. The hostess/waitress was very nice (Didn't catch her name.) The food was very good. I had the butternut squash ravioli and my husband had the chicken marsala. One client had the crab cake and the other had the salmon. I rarely see butternut squash on a menu, so it was a pleasant surprise. The music was quite loud and, since we were the only ones there, and we needed to talk, I asked that the music be turned down lower, which it was right away. We did not have any desert. I would definitely go there again, especially during lunchtime, as it seems from the reviews that it gets busy at night and on the weekends. It is great to have local restaurant with fresh, interesting food, instead of just a chain restaurant. Also, the prices were pretty good. Would recommend. read more

My family and I decided to go here to try for lunch. It looked like a nice place. The lunch menu was limited, but we decided to stay. The food was half-decent, but the portions were VERY small and we did not get any refills on drinks. The amount of food we got could not have even filled one person. We decided to share the two plates we got, and when we told our waitress she told us we would be charged a $4 fee and did not tell us that when we mentioned it to her while we were ordering. However, she did not charge us on the bill. The service was extremely slow. After being unsatisfied here, we walked down to another place to eat again. read more

My husband and I finally tried this BYOB place and all I can say is I wish it was sooner. Lula, herself, greeted us at the door while her husband was in the kitchen. I ordered the duck on the recommendation of our waitress, Kara. Her name alone set me over the edge as I had just lost someone and the name holds meaning to me:-) The duck was AMAZING. The perfect amount of sweet, salty and savory... the stuff dreams are made of. My husband had the salmon which was equally as good. Howdy Doody played silently on a movie screen behind us. It reminded me of a restaurant we ate at in San Francisco. Soon Lula was belting out some classic tunes and interacting with every table. It felt like we were invited to an amazing dinner party by gracious hosts. I LOVED every second of our first time experience here. Will definitely be back!!!! And soon!! read more
