Gosh, Sweet Surrender Gelato has really grown on me. You know sometimes you hit up a spot & you're not really sure how it will go or if this is the real deal!?! Well I can tell you that SSG grew on me over time as I tried a variety of flavours. I've enjoyed slurping on - Hazelnut, Pistachio, Espresso, Ruby Chocolate Raspberry & Blueberry Cheesecake to name just a few. Located in popular Steveston Village, it is a must stop at when you come here. SSG also sells delicious cookies & cheesecakes so keep an eye out. The staff are friendly & will let you sample a few flavours before you buy anything. I fell in love with gelato a few years ago after getting fed up with ice-cream. I must have had too many bad batches! After all I was getting older & my belly can only handle so many cups of Häagen-Dazs! Hee-hee! Don't get me wrong, I do love the gourmet type ice-cream spots in Metro Vancouver, & throughout summer I pop into Rain or Shine to get my fix. See my pix & review. What I love most about gelato is that I don't feel bloated like a Beluga whale afterwards. However, one of the common complaints is that the Gelato cups are too small & portion size is lacking. I thought I would've left a review for Sweet Surrender judging by the amount of times I cleverly have room for gelato when visiting Stevenson. They have fun and interesting flavours. Try the charcuterie if you don't believe me. And they don't stop at just gelato, they make bomb tasting cookies! Last time I ordered hazelnut gianduja and a miso peanut butter. Quite a warm day and we needed a rest. What better way to take a break than taking a Gelato break?!? Hubs can't resist fresh baked waffle cones, and ordered the Couverture Chocolate (premium dark chocolate) and hazelnut gelato. He noted they were both creamy. Decided to check out this ice cream store in Steveston. They have a lot of different flavours that are not typically found everywhere, which distinguishes them from other ice cream stores in the area. We decided to get the following: matcha, hojicha, black sesame, and HK milk tea. The matcha and black sesame was very standard and tasty, but the hojicha and HK Milk tea was a bit too bitter for my liking. The ice cream was very smooth as well, and not chunky. I found that the portion of ice cream that they give you is VERY generous -- while buying a small scoop, they will pack on the ice cream, seemingly to give you basically 2 scoops! Getting a large allows you to pick two different ice cream flavours. Probably due to COVID, there's no indoor seating. However, the store itself is already quite small. Since it's in the middle of Steveston, it's worth it to just grab and eat the ice cream on a walk! Would come back to try their other flavours! read more

Very yummy gelato here. I can see this place being busy during hot sunny days. I usually get the large which allows 2 scoops, so I can try more flavors. Due to covid, sampling is not available for now. I really like the chocolate which is rich and chocolatey. None of those diluted nonsense at other places. The HK milk tea and black sesame flavors are equally nice. I try to time my visit to Steveston with their opening hours but it can be tough as it opens at 2 pm on weekdays (except Friday at 12 pm). That is the drawback for me. You can also join the loyalty program to collect points for your order and redeem for a scoop or pint when you reach the required amount. Went as it's known for having artisan asian gelato flavors. I tried hojicha and black sesame but anytime, a place has black sesame, it's usually my go too. Perfect way to spend a gorgeous sunny day indulging in delicious gelato. I am happy to know more places are selling black sesame. My friend got the mango sorbet and it was very good also! Cute new little gelato parlour in the heart of Steveston in Richmond. Very friendly and excellent service. Clean and pretty white/blue decor inside. I had the HK Milk Tea: It was very smooth and creamy, with a strong fragrant tea flavour. Sweetness level was great as well. I really enjoyed this because not many gelato/ice cream places can extract the tea flavour well from my experience. They use premium Avalon milk & cream for all their gelato creations. I also sampled the Hojicha, London Fog, Miso Caramel (sort of like a salted caramel, it does not taste like miso soup at all) and Espresso. These were also very authentic tasting, and flavourful. Not mad about it, not mad for it. Nice to have a gelato option in the Village. We ordered uji matcha and london fog ($5/small scoop). Matcha flavour was good however the cone broke before we left the shop and the gelato seeped THROUGH the cone soon after. London fog was okay, it tasted a little like coke, melted quickly and 'scoops' were not full. Upon entry, there's a lot of space to the left, but the actual ice cream station to the door is very close and cramped. Also, payment is taken after having chosen our treats backwards towards the line up area. Since we were the only group inside, that was not a problem but it didn't make sense to pay after and return to the direction of the line up, crossing paths with the next person choosing ice cream. I'd suggest having that in reverse, unless the payment tap needs to be connected to a station on the right hand side, in which case, customers can pay first before getting their choice of gelato. Drove by a few times and finally got the chance to try this cute gelato spot! Free street parking at the store front makes it easier. The store is big enough for social distancing lineup and two small benches in the corner to enjoy a cone or cup. The decor is just so cute, colorful ice cream truck & stand to display current flavors. They have very unique flavors to try, too bad I visit during COVID, so I didn't bother asking to taste test any. The Uji Matcha and Raspberry Chip look very delicious, will try those next time. This round, I tried the miso caramel swirl in a cup for $5.25 including tax. It's a little steep for such a tiny cup but hey, this is quality gelato, so it's the experience of the taste and ambience of the shop. The small cup of miso caramel swirl seem small but actually it's just right to taste and satisfy my sweet tooth. The texture is smooth but not too rich & creamy, so not filling too stuffed after. The overall sweetness is on the less sweet side which I appreciate because I can actually taste the hint of miso, I'm guessing it's white miso to have the subtle taste of umami in the caramel swirl. The caramel swirl was on sweeter than the vanilla gelato so they contrast each other that the miso & caramel pop out. It was a very tasty cup of gelato!! For sure will come back to try other flavors. One thing I would see improvement is the pint freezer. The freezer has a sign says "pint" and that's it, so I opened it myself, and staff told me right away that they could help. Maybe a sign on the freezer telling customer to order with staff would help? Also I prefer the gelato pints in glass jars instead of paper cups. I understand the paper cups are compostable but those containers don't keep well in the freezer. I rather pay a deposit on the glass jars than the flimsy paper cups. On the other hand, I do appreciate the single serving cups and spoons are compostable. It's all about recycling and be more environmentally responsible, so Koodo for them to get compostable products. You can order online for your pints as well! It is located a few miles south of the Richmond city center, away from the traffic and crowds. We ordered 2 double scoops for $7 each (in a cup), which is standard pricing. Hojicha - This was by far my favourite of the day. It was creamy and had a prominent hojicha flavour. The flavour wasn't too overpowering and the sweetness was perfect. Hazelnut - This tasted like Ferrero Rocher, but without the chocolate. The hazelnut flavour was present, but the taste was a bit flat. I wish it was a tad more sweet. Coconut Mango - I really appreciate a vegan option and enjoyed the little chunks of mango. My bf quite liked this flavour, but unfortunately I wasn't a huge fan. It reminded me of my coconut hand cream. HK Milk Tea - We were both excited for this flavour, but didn't end up liking it. We ate a few bites, but left the rest untouched. My bf who isn't picky about food didn't want to finish it. It had a weird and bitter aftertaste. The flavour itself didn't remind us of Hong Kong milk tea. Overall, not a bad gelato spot in Richmond since there aren't a lot of gelato places.
