Hazelnut and Chocolate in waffle cone
    Michele T.

Quite a warm day and we needed a rest. What better way to take a break than taking a Gelato break?!? Hubs can't resist fresh baked waffle cones, and ordered the Couverture Chocolate (premium dark chocolate) and hazelnut gelato. He noted they were both creamy. I decided on the affogato w/ cereal milk gelato. The cereal milk flavor really came through, and the scoops were generous. Benches located outside, and it was a nice way to take a break on a warm day.

Sweet Surrender Gelato serves up yummy Asian inspired flavors gelato made from Avalon organic milk and cream! * Hojicha * HK Milk Tea I love how they offer so many tea flavours as well as classics such as pistachio and cookies & cream. I ordered the Hojicha in a waffle cone and my friend tried the HK milk tea. We loved how the fragrance of the roasted tea came through without being overwhelmingly strong. Although we did find that this gelato had more of a silky lightness to it which reminded us more of ice cream rather than gelato! The waffle cone itself was super crispy and tasted like cinnamon

Decided to check out this ice cream store in Steveston. They have a lot of different flavours that are not typically found everywhere, which distinguishes them from other ice cream stores in the area. We decided to get the following: matcha, hojicha, black sesame, and HK milk tea. The matcha and black sesame was very standard and tasty, but the hojicha and HK Milk tea was a bit too bitter for my liking. The ice cream was very smooth as well, and not chunky. I found that the portion of ice cream that they give you is VERY generous -- while buying a small scoop, they will pack on the ice cream, seemingly to give you basically 2 scoops! Getting a large allows you to pick two different ice cream flavours. Probably due to COVID, there's no indoor seating. However, the store itself is already quite small. Since it's in the middle of Steveston, it's worth it to just grab and eat the ice cream on a walk! Would come back to try their other flavours!

Large -- black sesame and chocolate gelato

Very yummy gelato here. I can see this place being busy during hot sunny days. I usually get the large which allows 2 scoops, so I can try more flavors. Due to covid, sampling is not available for now. I really like the chocolate which is rich and chocolatey. None of those diluted nonsense at other places. The HK milk tea and black sesame flavors are equally nice. I try to time my visit to Steveston with their opening hours but it can be tough as it opens at 2 pm on weekdays (except Friday at 12 pm). That is the drawback for me. You can also join the loyalty program to collect points for your order and redeem for a scoop or pint when you reach the required amount. Great addition to Steveston.

One of the best matcha ice creams I've had. On par with Elephant Garden, and Birchwood Dairy Farm but with a deeper flavour

COVID #26 I gotta get all my COVID #'d reviews in before they lift the lockdowns and declare this pandemic over. So, having said that, here is #26. The ice cream wars are heating up. A new addition to give J Squared a run for the money. Sweet Surrender does impressive ice cream/gelato. I'm not sure if I'd even call their product "gelato". It's creamy = high fat, aka flavour. Fat is your friend - and should not be measured upon it's innumerable profits to the equatorial mid latitude part of your physique. If you haven't perused many of my reviews, you may not be aware of how I stress the utmost importance of being a gourmand, in the excessive, and obsessive at such establishments. Please, nurture. Nurture that healthy region, until sutures are required for penultimate jubilation resultant from your compulsive compound consumption. My missives to you, you the addressee of my juvenile quips, historied by my temporary and storied existence, is to exhaust upon yourself the consumption of this product. Else, my above diverse clippings of praise and interest shall be predisposed and destined to a singular dusty shelf on the internet. 孔子說:「衰嘢!快啲食多啲啦!」

Sweet Surrender is a cute shop in Steveston and they serve really good Asian flavours! I sampled a few flavours like the black sesame and HK milk tea and both were good! Settled on Ruby chocolate strawberry and Hojicha. Both were rich and creamy!

Cute new little gelato parlour in the heart of Steveston in Richmond. Very friendly and excellent service. Clean and pretty white/blue decor inside. I had the HK Milk Tea: It was very smooth and creamy, with a strong fragrant tea flavour. Sweetness level was great as well. I really enjoyed this because not many gelato/ice cream places can extract the tea flavour well from my experience. They use premium Avalon milk & cream for all their gelato creations. I also sampled the Hojicha, London Fog, Miso Caramel (sort of like a salted caramel, it does not taste like miso soup at all) and Espresso. These were also very authentic tasting, and flavourful. They also offer waffle cones / waffles cups (which were sold out when I went unfortunately), as well as pints.

1 scoop small! It's a lot of ice cream in a small cup.

Small gelato shop, no seating inside but couple benches in front of the store. Overall ice cream was good! They were generous with the sampling and the few I tried were all pretty good. The flavors are more unique: mango yuzu, hojicha, hk milk tea, etc. I ended up getting a "small" Charcuterie (goat cheese, dates, nuts) and it was much bigger than I thought. It's essentially 2 small scoops of ice cream which is plenty for me.

We've been going to Timothy's for years (because we think it beats all the other ice cream parlors in Vancouver) and then stumbled upon Sweet Surrender - and we sure did surrender! The taste and texture are excellent, as well as the flavor selection. We were just blown away by the Hojicha and HK Milk Tea, as well as the dairy-free Mango Yuzu and Lemon Kamquat. IMHO this shop has more exotic/sophisticated flavors, while Timothy's serves more classic ones. Other NOTES: - the waffle cone is not dairy-free. - collect points with every scoop to earn a free scoop; it's auto-connected to your credit card :)

    - hojicha gelato (pint) = $11.50 - 《Chungry Rating = 8/10》 Summer might be ending but it's always a good time for ice cream!! I've been wanting to try Sweet Surrender's artisanal gelato for a while. They make their gelato with organic milk and also have a selection of sorbets and vegan options available! Their cold desserts are all made with high quality, natural ingredients and come in a variety of flavours by putting an unique twist on all of the classics. You like vanilla? Well why not try their Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla? If you're feeling adventurous, maybe give their Charcuterie or Miso Caramel Swirl gelatos a try too! You know I love tea and matcha, so I had to try their hojicha gelato! It's perfectly roasted to get that signature brown colour, and I really like the darker, earthy flavour it gives to the gelato. While I found that it was a bit on the sweeter side, I still enjoyed it! I don't know if it's because of the quality of the milk that Sweet Surrender uses, but the creaminess of each spoonful of gelato was spot-on. After trying their hojicha gelato, I can't wait to give the rest of their selection a try!

A new artisan gelato shop in Steveston, and I was an instant fan! Their shop is so cute and was a big fan of the two flavours we got - pistachio and black sesame. Great to see another shop using Asian inspired flavours. Would pick Sweet Surrender over the previous Steveston gelato/ice cream staples.

Drove by a few times and finally got the chance to try this cute gelato spot! Free street parking at the store front makes it easier. The store is big enough for social distancing lineup and two small benches in the corner to enjoy a cone or cup. The decor is just so cute, colorful ice cream truck & stand to display current flavors. They have very unique flavors to try, too bad I visit during COVID, so I didn't bother asking to taste test any. The Uji Matcha and Raspberry Chip look very delicious, will try those next time. This round, I tried the miso caramel swirl in a cup for $5.25 including tax. It's a little steep for such a tiny cup but hey, this is quality gelato, so it's the experience of the taste and ambience of the shop. The small cup of miso caramel swirl seem small but actually it's just right to taste and satisfy my sweet tooth. The texture is smooth but not too rich & creamy, so not filling too stuffed after. The overall sweetness is on the less sweet side which I appreciate because I can actually taste the hint of miso, I'm guessing it's white miso to have the subtle taste of umami in the caramel swirl. The caramel swirl was on sweeter than the vanilla gelato so they contrast each other that the miso & caramel pop out. It was a very tasty cup of gelato!! For sure will come back to try other flavors. One thing I would see improvement is the pint freezer. The freezer has a sign says "pint" and that's it, so I opened it myself, and staff told me right away that they could help. Maybe a sign on the freezer telling customer to order with staff would help? Also I prefer the gelato pints in glass jars instead of paper cups. I understand the paper cups are compostable but those containers don't keep well in the freezer. I rather pay a deposit on the glass jars than the flimsy paper cups. On the other hand, I do appreciate the single serving cups and spoons are compostable. It's all about recycling and be more environmentally responsible, so Koodo for them to get compostable products. You can order online for your pints as well! Directly from their own website powered by square, or through all the food delivery apps (Uber Eats, FanTuan, SkipTheDishes and DoorDash), I'm very impressed that the shop makes it easy for you to order, totally worth it!

We stopped by to get some gelato. The service was friendly. We ordered a chocolate gelato in a waffle cone. It was creamy, smooth and delicious.

The dining space is small but the decoration inside makes you feel like you transported to a different country. Marshmallow Thick Toast 4/5 The toast was about an inch thick, well toasted outside with a pillowy soft center. There's some melted chocolate on the bottom that added to the smores vibe. The marshmallows on top weren't very thick, so it melted to an even layer with perfect browning. The toast was cut into 9 pieces so it can be shared but given the portion I think 1-2 people would be fitting for this dessert. We weren't too hungry, so we shared amongst 4. Jasmine Tea Jelly 4/5 I really liked how fragrant the jelly was and that the jelly was a softer jelly that reminds you of Aiyu jelly. The after taste was a bit bitter but I feel like that tells me it was brewed and made and not just bought to serve. It's served with a splash of half and half I believe. To-Go I wanted to try and compare all the tea flavored jellies they had, Jasmine, Oolong and Earl Grey Tea Jelly. Packaged with small packets of the half and half to add later. The best was OOLONG 5/5- it had a slight roasted tea flavor that was refreshing and comforting at the same time. What you would want from a milk tea. Second best was Jasmine - fragrant and less bitter than the one I had in restaurant, typical jasmine flavor that's lightly floral and not too heavy Earl Grey 3/5 - it was good if you like earl grey like me, but it has an intensely strong fragrance and flavor that might be off-putting if you're not used to the taste. It was by far the strongest floral taste and smell of the three. I'd definitely be back to get these to go, they carry well and you can cross borders with them :)

I have learned over the years that I can appreciate red bean as a bubble tea drink if it's all blended up. However, it's the chunks of bean that I don't like, and this wheel cake had chunks of bean in it.
