Great new spot in Montclair for southern comfort food! We had the fried chicken, collard greens, cornbread with strawberry butter, pulled chicken sandwich with potato salad, and a side of mac&cheese. The fried chicken was crack. Potato salad was so good (if you like mustard!) and I couldn't put the mac&cheese down. The pulled chicken sandwich was so tender and moist, but the coleslaw gave it the perfect crunch. Collard greens were tasty too. I debated heavily before writing this review but I feel I need to share my experience/feedback To start, I was very excited to go to this restaurant and support one of the very few, if not the only soul food eatery in the Montclair. However, there just a few things lacking here. The pros: the restaurant was beautiful and reminded me of an upscale Harlem restaurant. Lovely! My friend also enjoyed her food. The cons: Let's start with when we first walked in. We made a reservation online, we also arrived right on time for our reservation and there was a bit of a wait, no big deal though. We waited almost 45 minutes but again we weren't too upset about that, it was a busy day. However, another party arrived and were seated before us. My sister asked the host what happened and she said that the party had a reservation scheduled before ours. This was a bit annoying because the other party was late and we had been waiting for at least 20 minutes at that point, why not just give us the table? Nonetheless, we were still excited to get in. Once were in, we were happy to be seated again. The decor again was very nice to look at. It took a little time but our waitress approached us and she was pleasant. I was disappointed to see that they had very few vegan entrees, there were two entree options presented to me. I am allergic to mushrooms and the waitress wasn't sure if these options had mushrooms, she had to go to the back a couple of times to verify for each meal. Unfortunately, they each had mushrooms so I had to opt for some vegan friendly appetizers. The waitress left us so that I can make a choice. When she came back she literally said "oh you're staying? I thought you would leave since you couldn't find something?" I was floored to hear that. So I told her I am trying to find something suitable and it was already 9pm at that point, no point leaving to try to find another restaurant. We ordered and food took some time but again this was understandable as they were quite busy at that time and I believe they were nearing closing time. My sister and my friend enjoyed their meals. They also absolutely loved the cornbread. My meal (grilled potatoes) was a little over-charred. Another disappointing part of the night was that the waitress did not check on us even once after we got our food. Another lady, who I presume was the owner, was doing a great job with checking on other patrons. However, she did not check on us at all. She even checked on the table right next to ours and completely ignored us. It honestly felt like were being ignored on purposed, maybe they thought I was being too picky? We were about ready to leave at that point. We paid and got up to leave. The owner (I think) and the host were in the front. They didn't say thank you, come again, or have a nice day, nothing. If you are vegan I would seriously consider before you patronize this business. As far as the service, maybe we caught them on a bad day. It was just subpar read more

Great food! Got takeout fried catfish and fried chicken with candied yams, collard greens, mac and cheese, potato salad, and deviled eggs. Deviled eggs were delicious the smoked salmon twist really works. Both proteins were fantastic, the catfish super fresh and sizeable the chicken moist and well seasoned. Also the sides were very well done usually that's where most places fail but not here. Very very happy with the experience. read more

I came from Maryland (Jersey bred) and decided to support this black owned business and order takeout. We ordered the fried chicken and fried fish. The hostess informed us that our order would take 30 minutes. An hour and 20 minutes later our food was finally ready. When asked to speak to a manager, I was informed the manager wasn't there at the moment. We were annoyed not only with the length of time that we waited but also with the hostess' unapologetic attitude. When inquiring why I saw people eating that came in after I placed my order, the hostess informed me that dine-in customers take precedence over take out. To be fair, I realize that this is a new establishment and that they are still working out the kinks. It's my hope that the owners do a better job grooming their front line staff so that they are better representatives for this establishment. As a paying customer, I should have NEVER been told that dine-in customer orders take precedence over mine. I paid the same price for my food as the dine-in patrons. IF that is truly how you do business, at least advise the staff to be considerate and let your patrons know what's up before placing and paying for their orders. This way, you give your customers the option to choose whether or not they want to wait for their order(s) to be fulfilled. So before you go there for take out, please know that your order is not priority (because you are not dining in) and that you will most definitely wait much longer than informed. read more

We had tickets to the "1964 The Tribute" (Beatles Show) at the Wellmont Theater right up road from this amazing restaurant. I had searched online prior to show to look for a place to eat and liked reviews so we gave it a shot. Inside is decorated very calming/eclectic in shades of blue, grey and black. One entire wall looks like waves, table tops are grey and the lighting fixtures give a very neat ambiance - large black chandelier in center of room with smaller ones around it, the smaller ones covered in blue lampshades (I thought this was the coolest idea)....now to the food. AMAZING!! We started with the cornbread appetizer with strawberry butter, it was served on a small cutting board with (2) generous slices of cornbread and (2) long smears of the strawberry butter. The cornbread was topped with an edible flower/greens that compliments the melt in your mouth cornbread. After eating this we were anticipating our meals and they did not disappoint!! Shrimp with Grits - tasted like they used and entire stick of butter in grits - could of eaten this by itself! There were (4) LARGE JUMBO seasoned sautéed shrimped cooked to succulent perfection, laying on cheddar (?) cheese covered grits along with a smattering of diced andouille sausage, every mouthful was heaven. The other meal was poached eggs with bacon and potatoes. On the surface that sounds bland - but everything other than eggs was seasoned to perfection. It's NOT diner food eggs, potatoes or bacon. Bacon was REAL bacon, not the package stuff. OVERALL - we would drive back to Montville just for this restaurant!! read more

Great food. I've been served by this restaurant twice, once through delivery and once at the actual restaurant. All the dishes I've tasted so far have been very flavorful and fresh-tasting. I think my favorite things so far are the deviled eggs and the baked mac 'n cheese. The restaurant itself is super clean, as are the utensils and glasses for drinks. Even in the light, you couldn't see fingerprints on the glasses, which is very rare at restaurants and shows that there is a conscious effort to provide great service. I've been hearing great things about this new restaurant and decided to finally give this new black owned business a try! So glad I did!!! I ordered the fried chicken dinner which is served with potato salad and collard greens. Unfortunately, I have an allergy to celery so I couldn't try their potato salad. They very easily subbed the potato salad out for me for Mac and cheese. The collard greens were very flavorful, perfectly cooked... tender without being mushy and had a little smokiness to them from the smoked turkey (they are available in a vegan option as well.) I'll admit, I was not a fan of the Mac and cheese at all. I think it lacked big time in the flavor department. I added a side of candied yams and as soon as I opened the container, my daughter said "they smell like yours, probably going to be good!" They were also very tasty! The fried chicken comes with 3 pieces and they are huge. One meal is definitely more like 3 dinners for me. Everything was well packaged and still nice and warm when I received it. I've had sushi for approximately 173 straight Fridays, but last night I decided to flip the script. Not that there's anything wrong with sushi, but am I glad I did. I discovered a Southern gem right in the heart of Bloomfield Avenue. Fried okra appetizer was nothing to write home or write Yelp about, but then the meal took off. Fried chicken and fried catfish dinners were both superb. Each accompanied by smoky collard greens and tasty potato salad, along with a fine hot sauce. The delicious meal was topped off with a scrumptious sweet potato pie that could have used another dollop of whipped cream. Trading the Far East for the Deep South was anything but a trade-off and a journey I'll happily make on several more occasions. read more

They had me at 2 words: lamb, and cheesesteak. I was just walking by and I decided to take one home and have it for dinner with a side of fried potato wedges. I wasn't disappointed. The plentiful pieces of grilled lamb with red peppers and a yummy creamy cheesy sauce were served on a grilled buttery roll. I'm drooling as I write this. I'd definitely go back. Far from a southern eatery! My friend wanted to try them because she loves soul food and the first sign was all the cooks coming in/ out the kitchen were Spanish / non English speaking . I gave two stars because the cornbread and the yams were good . My friend got the chicken wings as an appetizer and she said they could of fried the chicken harder, so since I order the fried chicken for an entree I asked them to fry it hard they said it is we do. They don't ! It wasn't and flavorless ! As well as the mac and cheese it's not seasoned just loaded with cheese to appear authentic. My friend got salmon cakes and grits for her entree and she expressed it had a Spanish like seasoning not southern salmon cakes and definitely not what she was expecting, they were soft barely fried to be hold together to take home and bake later and make more crispier , far as flavor she said they were okay .We both ordered ice teas which were warm and it was 90 degrees outside . I had to ask for more ice to make my ice tea cold tea. I forget our server name but he was horrible he did not check on us we had to flag him down and it wasn't crowded . At times the dish boy who was cleaning off our table offered to help but then had to get the server because he didn't speak English . When we asked for the check our server brought it and said gratuity is included we said okay. When he walked away we agreed that explains the service . But back to the food this is far from a southern restaurant. I had been very excited about eating at this place as it looked like a great establishment. A small black owned business that I could support. My experience was definitely not deserving of a polite paying customer. I was seated under an air conditioner that was blowing heavily directly on me. I asked to be moved to one of the 15 or more empty tables nearby. I was told no. When I asked to speak with a manager an impolite manager came over and condescendingly told me that the most she can do is adjust the angle of the blower (as a read this is a common gag). The service was non-existent. The food was okay but that all. Never had my water refilled. Wasn't told "good evening" or "thank you for coming." However, I was told that the gratuity was included even though there were only two of us. I would not take the time out to bash a business but they deserve the poor review they are getting as they earned it. Don't waste your money on an establishment that doesn't value your business. The ambiance is nice, the food mediocre and the service is genuinely poor. The consistent theme in this experience is discourtesy. That's how I would use one word to describe them. Hopefully the staff can learn from their actions and do better. I was looking to try a lot of different food items but was turned off. I only wanted the Smothered Turkey Wings but the waitress said, "You can't get them without getting the sides listed with them in the menu with it". Is it just me or is that the craziest thing you've heard of too? What if I was allergic to Dressing and Greens? I start to leave but I wanted to support so I ordered the unhealthy Fried Chicken with the two sides I wanted, the Potato Salad and the Black-Eye Peas. It came out within 5 minutes I was like wow! But, the Fried Chicken wasn't hot at all and the Potato Salad tasted like Mashed Potatoes with Yellow Mustard squirted in them. The Black-Eyed Peas were delicious btw. I told the waitress that the Chicken was cold and she asked me, "Do you want to take it home and warm it up?" LOL! Bless her heart. I recently went here with my sister for lunch on a Monday, which was not even the slightest bit busy in the restaurant to have the service be horrible. The waitress did not check up on us throughout the 2 hours we were there. We received our main meal over an hour after we ordered and the staff nor our waitress gave us any update before it was finally brought to our table. Throughout the time we sat, multiple DoorDash orders were being fulfilled before we even got our food. The manager had walked around various times and never came up to our table to ask how we were or let us know at all that the food would be delayed very odd especially since this is a new business in Montclair. Once our food came we ended up just asking for boxes because we were so irritated. After all of that, I gave the waitress a verbal tip about making sure she checks on the tables she's servicing next time because that's unacceptable especially when a restaurant only has two tables in there. The food was excellent but the service I would give a 2/10, this would definitely be a place that I would suggest for anyone to just stick to take out. read more

Place is beautiful, food is delicious. The only difference is that I would order as I'm in route. I felt it was a little slow for it to be empty the night I went. That's just me. It's certainly worth the wait. I had chicken and waffles and frying chicken takes a min. So it's all good. Looking forward to trying the shrimp and grits.
